Better therapy of acute leukemias depends ultimately on better understanding of the distinction between leukemic and normal progenitor cells. Thus, several chapters in this volume describe current knowledge of acute leukemia biology and discuss new classification systems that have arisen consequent to emerging insights into pathogenesis. Treatment has also improved for particular types of acute leukemia. Given our intention that the book be useful to clinicians, we pay particular attention to these advances, to management of acute leukemia in general, and to development of new therapies.

A Must Read
When a child is sick with leukemia everyone's focus is on surviving. That is paramount.This book tells us what happens in the other areas of their lives once they do survive, and that becomes paramount.We should study the lives of these survivors to learn what we can to address these kids' needs more effectively.This book is filled with priceless insights that current kids who are surviving leukemia will wish we had studied with great commitment.

I suspect that others with different chronic health issues may be able to identify with the struggles of those in this book. ... Read more

A compelling and needed story
This is a well-written, moving narrative about one family's struggle with childhood cancer. The negative review for this book is puzzling, if not simply a plug for another book. It criticizes this one for not covering medical protocols in sufficient depth, which is unfair because the author does not purport to do that. I agree with the previous reviewer. A focus on medical details misses the forest for the trees. Protocols change, and are mostly the province of doctors. Which is not to say one shouldn't pay attention to the medicine and become reasonably educated on treatment options. But understanding the course of treatment is just one aspect of the ordeal, and not the most important when you consider the human beings involved. Hope, attitude, living and enjoying life; such choices are absolutely within the families' control, and they can make all the difference. Conveying that is the purpose of this gem.

Wise and warm guide
Cynthia Krumme's book was not meant as a guide for parents about what kind of treatment to expect. Of course the description of treatment is out of date, but the treatment varies from year to year and from country to country anyway. Krumme wrote about how to cope with a very ill child, how to treat his or her siblings, how to enjoy life in spite of everything awful that was happening, and how to let the child enjoy it. And all this is timeless. It is best to get a description of treatment from the doctor who is dealing with the child and to read as much as possible about how other people coped with similar situation.And Cynthia Krumme is a very wise, warm guide.

A heartfelt saga, but dated from a medical standpoint.
As the mother of a daughter with leukemia, I found this a moving tale of one family's struggle with leukemia, but for those whose children have been recently diagnosed (1998-99), keep in mind that the author describesmedical protocols, procedures, even family activities that are out-of-datewith current philosophy. Many of the family's experiences are no longercommon or allowed by responsible pediatric oncologists. For this reason,the book may be misleading and inaccurate to some families. Inspirational Tale

It's a tale of the joy and pain that Christopher and his family endured during the years of his battle with leukemia, which he eventually lost, at age fourteen. It's told with extraordinary candor drawing alternately smiles and tears from this reader.
His irrepresible personality shines through. His tremendous courage sustained his family, friends and acquaintances. His surprising faith in God during discussions about dying provide both inspiration and hope for us all. His too-short life was filled with love to and from his family and the world around him.
Christpher's mother, Maribeth Ditmars, has, through his story, accentuated the positive, eliminated the negative with her focus on life-affirming ideas.
As Chrispoher predicted, he is now a guardian angel.

A truly moving story about family, faith and love!
I could not put this book down except when I needed a moment to collect myself from the rush of emotions this story elicited. I am so saddened by the loss of this boy, Chris, to cancer and the loss of Chris to his family. At the same time I am inspired by their story to appreciate the seemingly mundane "family times" and to try and not take all the little things for granted.
