Product Description
This book has been created for parents who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells parents where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to metachromatic leukodystrophy (also Arylsulfatase A Deficiency; Cerebroside Sulfatase Deficiency; Diffuse Cerebral Sclerosis; Greenfield disease; Late-Onset Metachromatic Leukodystrophy; metachromatic brain leukodystrophy), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on metachromatic leukodystrophy. Given parents' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). Hard-copy users of this sourcebook can type cited Web addresses directly into their browsers to obtain access to the corresponding sites. 2-0 out of 5 stars Canned material - out of date
I purchased this eBook and was quite disappointed. It is very generic material that is otherwise available on the web.Being written in 2002, it also is very out of date with regard to research and therapies. It's a catchy title and probably a lucrative business for the publisher to sell these eBooks for dozens of diseases at tens of dollars a pop. You'd be better off going to one of the foundations and reading their online material. Search for "MLD foundations". ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Leukodystrophy," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Leukodystrophy in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Leukodystrophy when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Leukodystrophy, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Excerpt: Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), also called "Siemerling-Creutzfeldt Disease," or "Schilder's disease") is a rare, inherited disorder that leads to progressive brain damage, failure of the adrenal glands and eventually death. ALD is a disease in a group of genetic disorders called leukodystrophies. Adrenoleukodystrophy progressively damages the myelin sheath, a complex fatty neural tissue that insulates many nerves of the central and peripheral nervous systems, eventually destroying it. Without myelin, nerves are unable to conduct an impulse, leading to increasing disability as myelin destruction increases and intensifies. An essential protein, called a transporter protein, is missing in ALD patients. This protein is needed to carry an enzyme which is used to break down very long-chain fatty acids found in the normal diet. Lack of this protein can give rise to a build-up of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA), in the body which can damage the brain and the adrenal gland. There are several different types of the disease which can be inherited, but the most common form is an X-linked condition. Patients with X-linked ALD are all male, but about one in five women with the disease gene develop some symptoms. Adrenomyeloneuropathy is a less-severe form of ALD, with onset of symptoms occurring in adolescence or adulthood. This milder form does not include cerebral involvement, and should be included in the differential diagnosis of all males with adrenal insufficiency. Although this disorder affects the growth and/or development of myelin, leukodystrophies are dif...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=52952 ... Read more

Product Description
WITHOUT A WORD is a riveting memoir that blends remarkable achievement with passion, sacrifice, love, pain, and human interest. It takes the reader into the lives of a celebrity couple, Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, and his wife, Jill, to reveal the Kelly family's private struggle and how eight and a half years with their severely disabled, terminally ill son, Hunter, unfolded in a redemptive and transforming manner. The light of Hunter's love through his brief and silent life shone into the shadowed corners of Jill and Jim's lives resulting in Jill believing that Jesus Christ was authentic, her learning to forgive Jim of past indiscretions, and finally resulting in Jim's seeking and finding God. Lessons gleaned from Hunter's life and death, and Jim and Jill's struggle to save their marriage during tumultuous times, make this a compelling and inspiring read. (2010) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book
As an adult who does not like to read, but heard bout the book on ESPN Radio, I must say that this is an excellent book. You get to learn the ins and outs of the Kelly household and family. I am halfway through the book and as soon as I put it down, I want to open it up and continue reading. I would recommend (and have recommended) this book to anyone who has a child with a disability, is having marital issues or like me, has a love of football. It is hard to readthe book and not feel like you are a apart of the family.

This is the most inspirational book I have ever read. How a young child can have an impact on those around him including his own family is worth writing this book.To Jim & Jill, no one can imagine everything you both went through unless you walk in those shoes.Sometimes we all learn things from something or someone that we never thought we could.Good luck to you and your family in the years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Neurology of Angels
The Neurology of Angels is an intense read. The plot is very believable and could very well be true to life. Three families are all pulled together for different reasons all relating to the pharmacudical industry.

Galen a neuroscientist, is trying to find a cure for stroke. Eddy enters politics to try and lower prescription drug costs. Elizabeth, an attorney has a daughter with a terminal illness. Their lives all come together in a complelling story that views the healthcare/pharmacudical industry from all angels.

Parental love, divided friendship and legal battles, add to the suspense. Emotions arise ranging from, love, frustration, helplessness, sadness and anger. It really leaves one wondering of the future of health care in the Untied States today.

Krista Tibbs is definatly an Author to follow.

4-0 out of 5 stars Must read book!
Ithink this is a book that everyone should readin light of current politics. The story is reminiscent of Michael Crichton's works: a story told to dramatize an area of science in which oreal and ethical decisions are made every day. In this case, that area is US healthcare system. I think that Ms. Tibbs provides a compelling analysis of an area of health care that many people agree needs reform, but that is complex enough that many people don't fully realize how difficult and far-reaching those changes need to be. We essentially follow a drug from conception to testing to FDA approval to use, and uncover the process and stumbling blocks along the way. In an era of much needed discussions of health care reform, this book raises interesting questions through the actions of engaging characters and an interesting (though slightly contrived) plot. I find Ms. Tibbs' viewpoint comes through in this book in an instructional but not preachy or overbearing way.

4-0 out of 5 stars A realistic novel focusing on the pharmaceutical industry accurately depicting the dilemmas and conflicts
We often hear that writers should write what they know and this is quite in evidence with Krista Tibbs's The Neurology of Angels who really knows her subject matter. Tibbs studied neuroscience at MIT and also holds an MBA in health sector management from Duke University. She is presently employed in the biotechnology industry conducting clinical research for diseases with unmet medical needs.

With this in mind, we can readily understand how she was able to craft a fascinating realistic novel focusing on the pharmaceutical industry as she accurately depicts the dilemmas and conflicts that arise among all of the major players.

Tibbs' principal protagonist, Galen Douglas is a neuroscientist who recently lost his fiancée to Transient forebrain ischemia, a neurological disorder that leads to strokes. As a result, Galen is determined to find a medical treatment that would combat this dreadful condition and reverse these ischemic strokes. As the story unfolds, Galen has just discovered, after a multitude of trials and failures, a drug that he feels is the solution that he names 423.

When Galen approaches his best friend, Eddy Parker, who incidentally was his late fiancée's brother, to team up with him to start a company in order to develop this miracle drug, he is rebuffed. As Eddy states, "the thought of leaving his job to do something that he wasn't sure he'd be good at, that depended on other people for success, and that had no security terrified him."

Undeterred, Galen plunges ahead and tries to persuade private investors to back him with his plan. This leads him to a Grizzly Adams' character, Amos Theriault, who is very well versed in the raising of risk capital who introduces Galen to Myesha Knight. Myesha has led finance, clinical and regulatory operations for start-ups that IPO'd for millions. Eventually, Galen and Myesha form a company called Biolex that changes the name of 423 to Lexistro.

During one of the phases of Lexistro`s trials, the FDA, due to a patient's death pulls another promising drug for Fibromyalgia off the market. FDA employee Patricia Chen, who had done everything according to the book and supposedly didn't overlook anything, originally approved the drug. As a result of the patient's death, the pharmaceutical company is sued and the attorney who is in charge of defending the company is Elizabeth Rose. As we read on, it turns out that Elizabeth is a single parent whose husband recently died and whose daughter has Transient forebrain ischemia. Her life along with that of two other families including that of Galen`s friend Eddy all become intricately intertwined with Galen`s quest to find a solution to this dreaded neurological disorder. The resultisa weaving together of an appealing, humane cast of characters, who, with their own agendas, feel that they have the best solution pertaining to the administration of health care which makes for some very compelling reading.

Moreover, what is a particularly important aspect of this serious novel is the author's underlying themes of how drugs are brought to market and the accessibility of health care to those who can least afford it. Tibbs does a fine job in effectively presenting both sides of the issues leading to an insightful yarn particularly for parents who may be in the same situation as that portrayed by the families in the novel.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Neurology of Angels by Krista Tibbs
Once in awhile there comes along a book that is written from the heart.Neurology of Angels tells a story that is all too familiar to a parent who has a child that is sick, when there aren't many answers, little hope and not enough time or money for a cure or even the promise of another month or another year.
There are three families:Galen, a neuroscientist and his wife Linda.Eddy, a devoted father soon to be politician and his wife Joy.Elizabeth, a pharmaceutical industry lawyer and her daughter Sera. All fighting for the same precious thing, a cure but at times find themselves fighting each other. Each family offers a different viewpoint, each holds a piece to the puzzle but their fear and mountains of red tape paralyze any progress.
Neurology of Angels helps unravel the tangled stereotypes of what is wrong with our health care industry. It also tells a story of what is right.
I loved this book, the characters and the story all felt real. This book will make you cry, it will make you think and isn't that what change is all about?

3-0 out of 5 stars Lot of questions, no real answers.
One of the thing I love about the First Reads program is that I get to read books that I wouldn't necessarily be drawn to otherwise. I read the descriptions, if it sounds interesting, I enter. The storyline of The Neurology of Angels drew me to the book and, while it seemed interesting, I'm not sure I would have picked it up. The book centers around three families, all dealing with healthcare issues. Galen is obsessively working to track down a cure for the neurological disease that took the life of his former fiance. Eddy, his best friend, becomes equally obsessed with reforming healthcare to make it accessible to all. And then there's Elizabeth, a young widow pregnant with a child that most likely has a deadly neurological disorder. Throughout the book the lives of these families overlap and connect. Galen and Eddy, former college roommates and best friends, have very different ideas about healthcare in the U.S. and what is the best way to go about enacting change. Elizabeth, a corporate attorney specializing in healthcare, is primarily concerned with finding a cure for her daughter, but also keen to find ways to make care available to others. The three main characters, as well as a larger supporting cast, all have the same good intentions--making healthcare available to everyone. However, they all have very different ideas on how to achieve those goals. Like any aspect of politics, each thinks his/her own way is the best and have difficulties seeing opposing viewpoints. This attitude and the accompanying egos prohibits any real change from occurring.

If my summary seems a little vague, it's because it is. This book is very difficult to define. Medical thriller? Nah, not really. It's a book with a lot of medical discussion, but more about relationships and how those relationships can be so fragile in the face of who's right and who's wrong and the accompanying finger pointing. The thing is, no one in the book is "wrong." Each of the characters has a good and personal reason for their opinions. And each truly believe that his or her own idea is the only real way to create change. But each program or idea is accompanied by problems. Problems that the individual cannot really see because he can only see the benefits. While I enjoyed reading the book, and thinking about all the issues that are presented, there were a few aspects that bothered me a bit. The medical speak that is somewhat prevalent in the beginning of the book is hard to follow--especially for those without a science background. Until I just forced myself to skim through it, I was finding it quite frustrating (my college biology was NOT enough background, fyi). It made me want to put the book down several times. The book is a good look into how the government plays a role in not only healthcare, but more specifically the pharmaceutical side. That was interesting to read about and I can only assume that it is pretty accurate considering the author's extensive background in the subjects. The characters don't really develop as much as I would have liked, but that wasn't a big deal for me. Overall, I am left with a lot of questions (primarily internal) about how healthcare should be in America. You don't have to be an expert in the subject to see that it needs a lot of work. This book does a good job of presenting some other options, but at the same time demonstrating that there is no easy solution or quick fix.
