5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read!
This book is excellent! I have started to use coconut oil and it definately gives me energy and my mind stays focused all day. This book nails that "Fat-Free Foods" are no good. Personal experience dictates this to me. My Father and Mother eat "fat-free" and their weight bounces up and down almost all the time. I really believe that "fat-free" foods are no good and have alot of chemical additives. My Grandmother was 92 when she died and she grew up on a farm, eating lard and bacon grease and no "fat-free" foods her entire life. She just died of old age and never overweight. This book is a great eye-opener!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Alot More Than Coconut Oil
A weath of the best information available without agenda, bias, or establishment hooks. I tend to be a tough critic so when I say that a book is more than a good read and is in fact quite valuable I believe that might be a first for me. No matter how tainted you may be toward diet books try to bring yourself to buy just one more. If your mind is still open and your heart is still hanging in there then this is the book you need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Fife is a saint!
I am one of many women who are dealing with gaining weight over the years and not being able to lose it. After my fourth child I couldn't shed the wopping 50 lbs. I gained. I was able to lose about half of it and the last 25 lbs. fought me to the nail. People would tell me thats just the way it is as you get older and to just live with being a little softer to the touch. Well, being a marathon runner and an advid exerciser I couldn't resign to the fact that my body was meant to gain weight solely on the fact that I had entered my thirties.
Bruce Fife is a genious in being able to explain what is really happening with our Western Industrialize bodies. He has done the research for us. All I have done is applied his knowledge and the use of virgin coconut oil in my life and the pounds have slowly melted off. In 2 months I've lost 12 lbs. and I know I will finally be at a weight that supports my life style. I recommend reading his other books. Thank you Mr. Fife! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you want to know about fats and oils? This is the book!
This book describes just about everything about fats and oils such as the chemical structure of fats, descriptions of the different types of fats, how oils and trans-fats are produced, the benefits and side-effects of fats, and much more. The book should answer many of the fat-related questions that a reader may have from reading other health books. Its is quite a lengthy book. This book stresses how important good fats really are to the body. A must read if you are a health nut. By the way, Udo Erasmus, the author, is an interesting character.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great sales pitch Udo.
This book is a great source of uncovering the facts on the oil processing industry and how processed oils are the culprits to our sickness(plus refined sugar and flour.) For that I give it a 2 star rating. This book is poorly written. I have an interest in this topic and I had trouble getting through it. Udo does not understand the concept of simplicity and not repeating yourself with useless nutrient info.

The underlining purpose for Udo to write this book is to promote and sell his designer oil blend, "Udo's Choice." He is making a killing along with Flora in ruling the health food industry with his expensive blend. That fact is that humans do not need nearly the amount of E.F.A's as he states and is literally snowballing the public into gorging on polyunsaturated fats which are extremely unstable in the body, especially if you eat cooked foods. His tiny bit of Vit E that he adds to his blend will not make up for the difference which he advocates(up to 10 tablespoons!) If you want a real, unbiased book on fats which is written by an actual researcher and biochemist, I invite you to save your money and purchase,"Know your Fats" by Mary Enig. She is not a salesperson for Flora like Udo is. What we need is fresh RAW butter for our fat needs. We need 80 times more butter than flax oil. And if the butter comes from grass fed cattle it provides our omega fats in natures balanced ratio(2:1 Omega 6-3) Our ancestors lived thousands of years on this life giving nutrient and they didn't crave Udo'Choice oil blend. It really boils down to this, trust your tastes. Do you crave butter or flax oil? Everybody craves butter because it is a nutritious food for us. Udo cleverly decieves the reader into thinking that saturated fats are "sticky" and cause heart disease. Cooked fats like meats and pasturized butter and cream perhaps do cause harm to the body. RAW saturated fats do not. I eat raw butter, cream and meat. Eat all raw foods and you will be healthy! I would highly recommend the book "Nutrition and Physical Degeneration" by Weston A Price.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Fat Bible
This is a landmark work in the study of fat. Yes it is a "relatively" easy read given that the author starts you off on a crash course in organic chemistry. Nevertheless it is rather heavy going in places and I believe it is more useful as a reference book than as a cover to cover health read. This is a book you will want to keep handy as you will refer to it again and again.

It is true that Erasmus does include a push for his own oil product. It is, however, well known that his involvement in EFA oil production came AFTER the bulk of his studies and research ie the product is in response to an exposed need. This book was certainly not written to sell his oil. The references to his own product are few.

This is a well written, well organised, objective text. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful for practitioners
The Herbal Vade Mecum is a very good materia medica for the practising herbalist. Uses are given, dosages aren't, so you need to know your plants before you use this book.
Beginners might not do all that much with it, except for the teensy little fact that they'd get solid practical sensible cautions for the listed plants instead of the usual overly theoretical overcautious ones.
Were I a beginner, I'd buy it for that alone. No pictures, but then there are lots of picture books out there.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Library Necessity...
This highly informative, attractively priced reference packs tons of information in a well-written, accurately designed collection of herbal information book. Reccommended for botanists, pharmocognicists and horticulturists (to mention a few), this book rivals industry 'greats' such as 'Tropica' and 'Exotica' (which run hundreds of dollars) AND has a much more digestible price. The design of the book makes it easy to use at your desktop or in the field. Bravo Mr. Skenderi! Someone finally got it right!

5-0 out of 5 stars Editor, Medical Herbalism journal
An excellent quick reference for the professional herbalist. It is in the same niche as other quick reference books such as Potter's Encylcopedia or Lust's Herb book, but far superior to either, because 1) it has many more herbs 2) it has up-to-date and accurate details on plant chemistry 3) the author has mined the wealth of herbal literature in German, Italian, and French 4) it contains reasoned judgements on safety considerations lacking in the other books in its class, and 5) it accurately describes the most important actions and most important uses, in a well thought-out section, instead of giving long lists of theoretical or minor actions. I'll be using this as a textbook for my intermediate-level students at the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism. --- Paul Bergner, Editor, Medical Herbalism journal ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What I was looking for....
I had read several books on essential oils and aromatherapy. Some were filled with anti-Western medicine rhetoric, others were focused on cosmetics, while others contained good anecdotes with recipes interspersed. I use these, but was looking for something else, which I couldn't really articulate.

I haven't finished reading this, but it is exactly what I was looking for. It combines practical application with reasonable science while focusing on healing.

The book is written in the context of the UK medical system, which doesn't match the US system very well, but it isn't hard to generalize the concepts to a different venue.

In the back are several appendices listing the recommendations and summarizing the findings.

Definitely worth the time and money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comment from a Health Professional
As a Health Education Specialist it is my job to work with clients in finding ways to improve their health. It is also my job to provide the most acurate health information. I make a point to check and double check any informational source that I might use as reference in considering possible avenues.

I have found this book to be extremely helpful in making such decisions pertaining to aromatherapy. It is full of actual case studies, physicians reference notes, reasonable scientific methodology, and sound references. This is one of the only books that I know of that successfully convinced me of the possible use of aromatherapy with more traditional allopathic methods.

If you should choose to pursue aromatherapy as a means to improving your ailments, I do stress that you address your concerns and your plans with your physician to ensure not only the best possible outcome but, your safety as well.

T.Schmenk, M.Ed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Aromatherapy for professioanals
This is a very welll written book but I feel it is not for someone who has just started exploring aromatheray. The summaries are very helpful. This is not a book you could read in one day for sure. It is full of interesting facts but at times one wants to just get into the healing sections quicker. I would suggeast this book to others but they would do better to get intro books on aromatheray if they are new to the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars stimulating and informative
I just finished reading Judith Shaw's recently published book: " Trans Fats: The hidden killer in our food." This is an impressive, first rate book. Shaw has managed to make a subject that could be less interesting and exciting, very interesting and exciting. I am impressed by the level of scientific evidence and thoughtful enquiry, and also historical detail. It all weaves together so dynamically and makes for very interesting reading It is almost like a detective novel. One wonders where is it going at first. And then it falls in place with very sharp logic. It is a fine piece of scholarship which includes much helpful information for people who want to learn more about the dangers in eating foods with trans fats. Judith Shaw's writing style is also very readable and easy to follow. A good and useful read!

5-0 out of 5 stars A True-Life Horror Story - A Must Read for our Future Health
Avoid Trans-Fats, Bad Fats, Trans Fatty Acids are Dangerous.... These are all the buzz words I've been reading about trans-fats, especially in the Atkins diets and most low carb diets. This little book tells why they're dangerous and in such detail with so much noted evidence and such smarting comments about the food industry that you won't be able to put it down until you learn all you can. After reading it aloud to my Doubting-Tom husband he's convinced too. VERY Convincing! It's opened my eyes and I hope it will yours too!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone needs this book!
This book is just great - Judith Shaw gives us the real lowdown on trans fats; to find out that there is ZERO recommended intake is just horrifying. I hope this book will be a wake up call to us - we need to stop eating foods that are filled with additives and we need to tell our government that we won't tolerate being poisoned by huge food conglomerates. Thank you Judith Shaw for telling the truth!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable reading even for busy Parents
From casual newspaper and magazine reading, I was aware Trans Fat were bad for you, but it was eye opening to realize how bad. Severson writes in a very calm, factual way. Also, there is just enough detail (versus deadly dull level of detail!). It is a very quick read, and I would recommend it for all harried moms and dads as we make alot of choices while pounding the aisles at the market, and I know I have changed my shopping choices based on the information I learned in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative & Humorous - move over Fast Food Nation
This is the most well written and researched book that I've found on the subject of Trans Fat. Severson's tone is non-alarmist and spiced with humor. She presents scientific facts and research in an understandable and immediately practical fashion. This doesn't have all "the sky is falling! the sky is falling" rhetoric of Fast Food Nation, and for that reason alone is utterly believable--and sobering.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
This book is presented in an easy-to-read format and is full of great information and fabulous recipes. I finally understand what trans fat is and why it is so bad for you. The recipe for Chicken-Tarragon Potpies is so delicious and easy to make it is going straight into my Family Favorites file. This book should be on everyone's cookbook shelf. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but could use improvement
This book is easy to read. The author describes the various stages of digestion, the role that friendly bacteria plays in digestion, and discusses probiotic treatment options for various illnesses. However, there is a chapter that recommends how to buy probiotics. I realized that it only leads to one brand of friendly bacteria, which happens to endorse the book. Most of the other probiotic brands are ruled out through various comments. I made the mistake and bought the recommended strand, thinking they were the best and there were no other options available. Be aware that other stuff is out there, and the information in the book doesn't give an objective picture of what to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Perfect! Just what I was looking for. Lots of information in a small easy to read pamphlet. Good starting point for more in depth research.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, thorough, understandable
Needing to do some research on the subject of DHA, I selected this book without any expectations. However, I was very pleased by the author's apparent knowledge of the subject matter, and her ability to explain fairly complicated concepts without being tedious or condescending. DHA as a nutritional supplement isn't all that well-known as yet, but I feel sure it will become a household word in the near future. As that time approaches, and people want to learn more on the subject, this author should prove to be an excellent resource. I have read this book pretty carefully and thoroughly, and have learned a lot from it. I will be buying more of her books on other subjects. ... Read more
