An excellent book
Editor William Roberts, MD, of the American Journal of Cardiology writes in his "Good Books in Cardiovascular Disease Appearing in 1999" that the Manual of Lipid Disorders "is an excellent book. I use it frequently." Although the book is written for the physician reader, it may also be helpful for the educated layperson interested in knowing cutting-edge information about reducing risk for coronary heart disease. Good as far as it goes, but slight.
This rather slender volume (156 pp.) carries the promising subtitle "An Indispensable Guide to All the Fats You're Likely to Encounter," but really doesn't live up to that. I would like to know, say, the comparative merits of avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, and almond oil, but for the most part the book discusses classes of oils rather than specific oils. I was disappointed.

Also, the author presupposes that you're reading a book on fats because you're fat. I'm not. Rather, I was hoping for more specifics on fats beneficial to the brain. So through large sections of the book, I felt as though I was not its target audience.

What's there is good. If I were the book's editor I would request that the author fatten it up a bit. ... Read more
