Book Description
Hardbound. This text has been organized to provide the reader with a comprehensive coverage of the physiological and biochemical processes essential for the understanding of diseases affecting the different parts of the gastrointestinal tract. It describes novel and recent concepts in the pathophysiology and management of common gastrointestinal, pancreatic and liver disorders encountered in infants and young children. Each chapter presents a basic clinical approach to the problem including pertinent investigations for confirming the diagnosis and for discussing the most appropiate therapy. Commonly used drugs are listed while references cited are the more recent rather than the classic ones. A vast number of related subjects are covered, each subject being presented by experts in that particular field.

The book is divided into five parts: Disorders of the Oesophagus and Stomach; The Small Intestine and Stomach; The Exocrine Pancreas; and The Liver.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Worman Is a Liar
Dr. Worman should be ashamed of himself. He is obviously in the pockets of the big drug companies, because there are several herbal remedies that truly enhance liver function. One of these herbs, milk thistle, has been proven to aid liver function, but Dr. Worman goes out of his way to claim that no "scientific" studies show this. That's nonsense, and it's a lie. Milk thistle has been known to aid liver function for centuries, and it has been thorougly tested and proven to do so in recent studies. Dr. Worman does not want you to know this, because the drug companies cannot make any money on this common and inexpensive herb.So Dr. Worman would rather lie and potentially let people die while he shills for "Big Pharm."

5-0 out of 5 stars Good buy
I got this book for my husband who had slightly elevated ALTs and ANA. He's done many tests but doctors can't figure out what's going on. While this book did not give the answer (now, we wouldn't need doctors then!), it helped him get a good understanding of the interconnected liver issues. Got the thumbs up from a person in the pharma field!

4-0 out of 5 stars Whew! There is hope.
Hepatitis C has many times been called "the silent killer," but Dr. Worman explains that death is not always the case....people can (and do) live with the virus. In addition to covering Hep. C (which I wasmostly interested in), he sheds light on the other Hepatitis viruses andliver dysfunctions (hence the title). I found this book to be technicalenough to give a layperson, like myself, a good biochemistry and cellbiology lesson, but easy enough to read so that I didn't feel like puttingit down. I especially liked how Dr. Worman frequently repeatedinformation (or rather, re-worded the same information, summarizing). Writing the book this way helped the info. "sink in." This is agreat counterpoint to alternative medicine believers (which I am), as itoffers a strictly medical approach to diagnosis and treatment.(We allneed both sides of the story.) Especially beneficial are the chapters onsupport groups, where to find more information about liver disorders, andthe glossary of terms. I recommend this book for anyone who is seeking moreinformation for him/herself or a relative striken with liver problems ofany kind.It is a thorough guide with practical information that in thelong run gives hope. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best clinically-oriented texts ever!
The latest edition of Dame Sheila Sherlock's text on diseases of the liver is a welcome addition to the books available for those treating patients in the clinic. The text is easy to read and well organized. It is easy to find subjects of interest in the index and that cannot be said for every text in print currently.
The book offers clear and consistent handling of issues concerning patient care. This proves very valuable in daily practice. ...the book is a more than reasonable memorial to Dame Sheila Sherlock's work. Although, some might not find the text sufficiently encyclopedic there are other texts for that purpose. I combine Schiff's two-volume set with this when I feel a need to seek that kind of overview.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent primer
Sheila Sherlock is like the bible for anyone interested in Hepatology. Although there are several other books more advanced and comprehensive, this is an essential primer to the subject of Hepatology. It's approach issimple, yet reasonably comprehensive and the illustrations are superlative. This is a book every aspiring hepatologist should own.

4-0 out of 5 stars A layman's review of a difficult subject
If you need to read this book as a patient or significant other, do not despair excessively. It is written by and for specialists in the field, but with the aid of a medical dictionary and a sypathetic physician ornurse, you will be able to understand quite a great deal. This helps indemystifying the diseases contained within, giving you at least a foundationof vocabulary and watchsigns. It may help in discussions with yourphysician if you have a desire for very detailed information. The bookalso contains extremely extensive references. In the field, it seems to bethe best there is.Although the vocabulary and jargon may confuse a bit,use your medical dictionary (essential), and realize that there are notmany absolutes in this field. Each patient is an individual, not astatistic.Do not become depressed or anxious about the information--itcan seem a little overwhelming and only presents a very clinical, hard lookat liver disease. The text only contains the best of Western medicine anddoes not even remotely cover alternative therapies available to a patient. My advice is to have this as a Western medical reference and outlook.Butremember that there is usually another way--search for other answers fromalternative practitioners--accupuncture, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, herbsand herbalists, medical intuitives, healing books and tapes, etc.MostWestern doctors at this point often dismiss these alternatives, but theythemselves may be able to offer little to help the patient depending on thedisease.Think of yourself (the patient) as the center of the medicalteam--surround yourself with the best you can--people, therapies, positivethinking, etc.Never loose hope or give up.This field is advancingdaily, so this book may be out of date by the time you read it and you willhave to talk to your physician for the latest information. Most physicianswill be happy that their patients are well-informed about their conditionand should be happy to discuss any questions you have related to yourcondition--indeed this is their job. ...
