Product Description
Lupus, a disease of the immune system, can be quite deadly, claiming the lives of thousands of patients yearly. Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on this disorder, an eminent clinician who has treated over 2000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. His The Lupus Book, originally published in 1995, immediately established itself as the most readable and helpful book on the disease.
Now Dr. Wallace has once again completely revised The Lupus Book, incorporating a wealth of new information. This Fourth Edition discusses the newest clinical trials and emerging therapies--all laid out in user-friendly language that any patient could understand. Readers will also discover fully updated sections on the science of lupus and breakthroughs in research. And as in past editions, the book provides absolutely lucid answers to such questions as: What causes lupus? How and where is the body affected? Can a woman with lupus have a baby? And how can one manage this disease? Indeed, Dr. Wallace has distilled his extensive experience, providing the most up-to-date information on causes, prevention, cure, exercise, diet, and many other important topics. There is also a glossary of terms and an appendix of lupus resource materials compiled by the Lupus Foundation of America.
Over a million Americans have lupus. The Fourth Edition of The Lupus Book offers these patients and their families a wealth of reliable, up-to-date information that will help them manage the disease and live a happier life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for-a lupus reference book!
I have been searching for information that compiles lupus information in one place. True, it is not the only place, but what an informative, easy to read source.I also appreciate the appendices providing lupus resources for further information. If anyone knows of current lupus research or trials, I would be interested to learn more (email:lewisgreen@bellsouth.net).My daughter is 23 and was diagnosed 2 years ago.So young and we are interested in improving her quality of life.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Information PLUS
This book contains very worthwhile information for a patient or family member with Lupus.Best of all it is written in a way that is easy to read and understand.I would highly recommend it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Quite technical
The book is very technical in nature that is geared more toward health care professionals rather than general readership. There are portions of the book that are informative for those with Lupus and their families. I would not recommend reading this book prior to reading several others that are geared to the Lupus patient and their family.

5-0 out of 5 stars You need it
Straight to the point. If you're reading this review either you or someone you love dearly have Lupus.

This handbook must be in the shelves and minds of those who confront this disease daily; not only because it explains how the body reacts to the disease, but also helps in the recognition of symptoms and bring awareness to the multiple signs of alert that one must know to react to an organ attack.

Some of the chapters are somewhat complex to the layman, but Dr. Wallace tries to make everything accessible with drawings, reference tables and extremely useful "summing up" most important point section.

Each body part that might be affected by SLE (in Portugal LES) has a separate chapter, also detailed are the ways medication work and their side effects (short and long term).

Other interesting sections are the explanation of lab test terminology, and what they mean.

The lifestyle, limitations and how to cope with the disease are also important for all to know. Can a SLE patient have a baby? Is it hereditary? What kind of protection should a patient use against the sun rays? Why is it an important alarm signal a medicated Lupus patient having high fever? Does it severely limit life expectancy? Those questions and many, many more are answered in a clear way, without evasives, but with a positive attitude.

Are you adding this book to the cart? You should.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a casual read ...
While I would never expect to sit in front of the fire to read this in a linear way, it's been my go-to book for clear information regarding what lupus badness has currently come a'knocking.Detailed?Yes.Scary?Surprisingly, no -- coexisting with the realities is an optimism which makes this comprehensive guide stand out.I've invested in similar books, but no longer know where I put them ... this, I have on the nightstand. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not helpful
The description of the book was lacking on the website; had it been more clear I would not have bought this book. There is very little detail on a good diet to follow in the book and it is basically a vegan diet.Don't waste your time on this book.It was just a lot of stories about people who have had success with managing their symptoms with a vegan diet. So, if you want to try it, just eat vegan.I returned this book immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lupus Recovery Diet
I have found this book to be extremly helpful. Although, if taken word for word could be a bit extreme, the basic ideas are very sound. I have tried several of the recipes and they are quite good. Eliminating dairy, white flour and sugar has not only lessened joint pain, but has also helped reduce sinus inflammation. I was a vegetarian and am now a vegan. It has been easier to eliminate the cheese, yogart, eggs, et., than I thought, especially when the results is feeling better. Interested in long-term benefits/effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars AMAZING LUPUS DIET THAT WORKS
I have had Lupus for over 20 years & have been on about every medicine available WITH ALL THE BAD SIDE EFFECTS. I was skeptical about this diet but desperate for a safer way to get rid of the pain. My doctor was amazed at how quickly my pain went froma constant "9" to a "2" and stayed there! I am healthier than I've been in years!

3-0 out of 5 stars It's all about vegan
Presents a good argument for adopting a vegan diet as an alternative for managing autoimmune system disorders. It may be worth a try in lieu of Prednisone, Plaqenil, Cellcept and every other drug my rheumatologist keeps prescribing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Foundations
This book is just what I was looking for- a guide to managing my Lupus-like disease naturally. I only started the diet 2 days ago, so I cannot yet vouch for its efficacy, but a vegan diet is mentioned in numerous places elsewhere in terms of its benefit to those with autoimmunity. Ms. Harrington lays out a plan and justification, offering information as well as support. It can be overwhelming and confusing to look at all the health information out there on managing these illnesses, but this plan is where I choose to start. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Three Secrets to Conquering a Life-Altering Disease
Within a few years of contracting lupus at the age of 26, Sara Gorman had traveled through the first couple of rings of Dante's Inferno. Walking a few dozen steps from the bedroom to the bathroom or even turning the keys in her car's ignition was agony. Her dream of being an accomplished professional was over. Bearing children was impossible.

Today her life has been transformed. She suffers little pain. She likes her less demanding job. And she gave birth to a baby girl, as well as another after this book came out.

How Sara overcame intense physical pain and deep vocational disappointment is the subject of this affecting and memorable book. The genre of self-help books has been mined by countless authors, but Despite Lupus must be unique in its three-part reliance on technological ingenuity, the spiritual wisdom of the Christian bourgeoisie, and the support of others. Oprah Winfrey or Dr. Laura she is not. (Full disclosure: I am friends with Sara and her husband, John).

She created a spreadsheet to track her responses to the disease. She rejected the ethos of the managerial and professional classes that self worth is tied to workplace success and embraced her physical and vocational limits. And she sought the help of those willing and able to help her, everyone from her husband to a support group.

One reviewer complained that Sara's triumph over her disease can be attributed to the fact that she quit a job, a luxury that this person could not afford. Stepping down from her job did help Sara, and by my lights, her book would have profited from mentioning how single mothers or women who must work full time can cope with the disease. But this criticism can be taken too far.

Managing lupus' symptoms is possible for those with 9 to 5 schedules. In fact, as Sara's book shows, managing this fearsome disease can be achieved without sharp or constant pain to the body and with an ennobled rather than shrunken soul.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to live well with Chronic Illness: Despite Lupus
I found out right from page one that I could have written this book! What I felt, what I was thinking; was written on these pages! For the first time; I was not alone and I was not crazy! And I felt "GREAT"!No, I was not cured! But for me; this is the part that the doctors don't explain to you and it's the part that you need to know the most!Thank you for putting you life into a book for others to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars True insight on LIVING.
"Despite Lupus" delivers insight about living... period. I don't have a chronic illness, but I found the thoughts and ideas about being true to yourself, in your current life situation, applicable to anyone. We all have hurdles and difficulties and often our lives take unexpected turns. This book, although specifically about dealing with a chronic illness, is a lesson in how one can choose to handle any situation in life.
My family member has a chronic illness. When I gave her the book and she read the first chapter, she felt that she was reading about herself. She wants all of our family members, especially her husband to read it because it's so difficult for her to explain what she goes through emotionally (and physically) on a daily basis.
I just love this book. It's an easy read and you'll be drawn in from the first page.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book! I highly recommend it for you or a loved one with Lupus!
I was diagnosed with lupus about 2 years ago and this book was a huge benefit! At the time the only information I found was on the internet.Although it was helpful, I didn't feel it on a personal level. I was so depressed and discouraged and this book really helped me see that there is a way to live well with a chronic illness by someone who was actually doing it.I have incorporated a lot of Sara's advice in my own life from adding naps to my schedule to watching my diet more closely. One of the biggest helps from this book is the spreadsheet!I don't keep an actual spreadsheet but a calendar with all my medications and daily symptoms. It definitely helps me track the progress I am making.Thank you Sara for writing such an amazing and informative book. I am striving to be like you and Live Well Despite Lupus!

4-0 out of 5 stars You don't have to have lupus to benefit
Having known two women with lupus, I read Sara Gorman's book with great interest. Her direct and unpretentious style says to the reader, I have a story to tell you; pull up a chair. Unflinchingly, she shares intimate details of her most personal journey, sparing nothing, to paint a portrait of a debilitating and chronic disease. Despite Lupus is touching, informative and uplifting. And the lessons she learned will resonate with those who are not afflicted with the disease. Her words are universal: The importance of taking care of ourselves (physically, emotionally and spiritually), living in the moment, giving up control, accepting what we cannot change, and expressing gratitude for all that is good in our lives. I recommend this book to anyone going through a major life change--or as a reminder of what's truly important. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Batman has done it again.
If you are a fan of Dr. Batman (and heaven knows I am) you have to read this book. It is an accompaniment for his other books, "You're not sick, you're thirsty" and "your body's many cries for water". Rehashes some of the information in the other books but is necessary, just in case the reader hadn't read the other books first. If you have a family member with these problems (as I do) PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE give this book a chance. It could save their lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quite a book, and then some, contains superb information
The book is about water and SALT. Unless you incorporate the SALT along with the water, your body will not correct the problem 100%. But if you incorporate the SALT, along with the water, and avoid the dehydrating caffeine in tea, coffee, soft drinks) and chocolate, you will not believe the results unless you experience them or are close to someone who experiences the results.

The contents of this book are amazing, and the letters from MD's confirming this discovery is too revealing of the dilemna we have allowed to persist - that of "treating" and "milking the problem" without taking the corrective steps to eradicate the problem and educate the public. The fact still exists that each one of us is responsible for what we do and for what we accept as truth. Don't take anyones word for anything, try it for yourself - you be judge, jury, and prosecutor. Are you not already the victim?

This a most remarkable book, and along with Dr. Batman's earlier book, "Your Bodies Many Cries For Water", answers the questions we all ask, and for which the answers will not come from the NIH, AMA, and "support" groups for asthma and many if not all others. Dr. Batmanghelidj calls it the "Sick Care Industry". And why will the simple answer not come from these institutions?Simply because "there is no money in it" - there is no money in water and salt. But there are billions in "treating" asthma, allergies, cancer, lupus, ms, diabetes, and the list goes on.

Use your God given head, and your God given common sense.

What's the first thing given to patients when admitted in the hospital due to severe illness of any kind?

Yes, great guess, a SALINE SOLUTION DIRECTILY INTO THE BLOOD.

Cause it's the best thing for your sick body.

Hello?Hello?Hello? Is anyone out there? Is anyone listening? Is anyone using their God Given Common Sense?

Get this book and READ IT, and DO IT.

Then see if you don't start to look around you and begin to ask "uncomfortable" questions.

Get on the web and search for water cure, salt cure, etc.

And, by the way, if you believe what you find on snopes as if God Himself had written it, then you will have a difficult road to travel.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great but dont stop here
I have developed Infectious Asthma from an Upper Respiratory Infection a couple years ago. The Water helped alot, but if anything cures it, it will be the 12 week Zithromax regimen advocated by Dr.Hahns research. Search for Infectious Asthma on the web to find the regimen. In a nutshell, I take 500mg Zithromax for 1st 3 days, then for the next 11 weeks, you take 750mg of zithromax one day per week. After the 2nd day of starting the regimen, I feel much much better and the symptoms have all but disappeared.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing much needed information
How often have we heard the advice through our lives to drink at least 8 glasses of 'water-water' (as opposed to other beverages) per day? How many of us do? I thought I was drinking enough since I always seem to have a glass in my hand as a lifelong habit, but after actually counting glasses for several days, I realised I'm coming up a little short every day.

Just that one change of conciously drinking more water and getting a little salt every day has made me feel immensely better and diminished many of the symptoms of dehydration that I never knew about before Dr. 'Batman's book came to me. A great book! It's connected so many other things together for me that I already knew about health and nutrients. Startling and yet such a simple sensible idea.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it is hard to accept but it has relieved my asthma greatly..
After a lifetime of being told that salt is bad for me, I finally let go and started to use celtic sea salt liberally (as prescribed in the book). At first I only drank the water, but adding the salt completely maximized my progress. At 4 separate times this past weekend, I stopped my own asthma attacks at each onset. It took me about 7-10 minutes each time. It took alot for me not to use my inhaler, and to just give the water & salt a chance to work.I am extremely grateful and rather emotional about it, since I thought I would be on my proventil inhaler for the rest of my life. The inhaler has caused a number of side effects, and I am now planning a detox to remove the residue of this drug from my body, which I've been dependent on for more than 27 years. And I've only been doing this seriously for 2 weeks, (and getting better with each day). I thank "Dr.B" for giving me my health back (along with hundreds of others whose testimonials I've read on the www.watercure2.com site). These are the same testimonials I was so compelled to read again and again, because I just could not believe and accept that something so simple could cure this disease that left me so weak and scared about the future of my health. Not to mention, very likely preventing other diseases I would be on the road towards. I suppose this is my own testimonial, because it really happened, and I hope that readers searching for an answer will forget their fears (that it won't work) and try it. Yes, it is still hard even for me to believe...even though it continues to work for me. But I do know for sure that I will never stop Dr.B's water & salt prescription. I will say this - if you want your health back, just take it back by taking action. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The First Year - Lupus
The book answered a lot of questions for me about Lupus. The author, herself, has additional conditions with her Lupus which I also have.I was very pleased with my choice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not what reviews make it out to be
I ordered this book with great anticipation and expectations; particulary after reading all the rave reviews.I was sadly disappointed beyond belief. This book did nothing for me except give me nightmares. If you respond well to intimidation and scare tactics as in worse case scenarios this book is a must have for you.Otherwise, it is a slow painful read with stories slanted toward those with the hardest struggles.Very little nutritional or alternative therapy information. The book is dull, outdated, and in general uninteresting. It's a really hard read.Maybe I got a bootleg copy but this book is nothing like the reveiws I read here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lupus, exposed
I've read most of the lupus books on the market, and this one is the most comprehensive of them. The author does a great job exposing lupus' various incarnations, treatments, systemic effects, and effects it has on the people who surround those afflicted with this condition. If you or your loved ones have lupus, you will definitely become informed, and you will definitely not feel alone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Information/Support
Godo reminder that I was not alone in what what I was going through. Also an easy read for my loved ones.Helped them to better understand what I am going through.I recommend the book for anyone with Lupus or an autoimmune disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful
This book is very useful to people with lupus. I was diagnosed with lupus two years ago, with difuse symptoms, a lot of neurologic symptomsthat one neurologist diagnosed as "you are very nervous, take a vacation, go to the beach", of course it didn't work because I had a cerebral vasculitis by lupus. Doctors shoul know about the symptoms described in this book by a patient and not only the symptoms described in medicine books. It has been very helpful to me. When I read it, I told to myself, ok, now I know more about this disease and I am more secure, I feel better. Thanks for the book. ... Read more

A complete Guide for Women with Lupus

The Lupus Handbook for women provides all the information a woman needs to understand the disease, its diagnosis, and the treatment. It will answer her questions and help her to work with her doctor in managing the disease.

Rheumatologist Dr. Robin J. Dibner, in clear and supportive terms, tells women what they need to know, including:

* What lupus is, how it affects the body, and why women are particularly vulnerable to it (90 percent of Americans with lupus are women)
* The three different types of lupus (discoid lupus, systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], and drug-induced lupus)
* How to get a correct diagnosis and understand the tests (because the symptoms are often mistaken for those of other illnesses, it can take three to five years to get a definitive diagnosis)
* The pros and cons of the various conventional drugs and therapies
* What the new, experimental treatments are, whom they are for, and what their risks and benefits are
* How to use stress control, diet, and exercise to prevent flare-ups and maintain health
* How to keep lupus from interfering with a normal dating and sex life and with the development of healthy relationships
* How to have a safe, though high-risk, pregnancy

The Lupus Handbook for Women also includes information on the major lupus research centers, support groups, and other sources of help and information. ... Read more

When I was diagnosed with Lupus I was overwhelmed.I had no clue or understanding of what to expect.I skimmed through a bunch of books, looking through the table of contents and was interested in what this book had to offer.I am so glad I picked it!I was given a clear understanding of what to expect and a explanation of why certain things were happening.2 of my friends were diagnosed after me and I bought them this book. They were as lost as I was and were grateful to have it too.We all reference back to it from time to time.If you or anyone you know has Lupus, I would recommended this book as a Must Have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for those newly diagnosed.
The "New Hope for People with Lupus" was very informative. It is an easy format to follow and helpful for those newly diagnosed or reading their first book on Lupus. The coverage of both traditional and non-traditional therapies was solid. I recommend this book for those who are new to Lupus.

2-0 out of 5 stars Unimpressed
I am a person with a possible diagnosis of Lupus, looking for information about the disease. While I found Dr. Wallace's handbook on Lupus very helpful, "New Hope" was full of silly platitutes and assumptions about my experiences of the disease (trying to be funny and sympathetic, but not mirroring my experiences at all--I found it rather condescending). It did not cover in depth alternative therapies as I had hoped.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative and optimistic
This a good book for any Lupus patient.I have SLE and found this book inforamtive, but it is interlaced with optimism and cases of people who were able to reduce their symptoms. It has everything.. the basics, meds, alternative therapies, coping and relationships, tips on what to ask the doc. This is a good book. ... Well, since my hands are involved w/my lupus I can't actually READ this book. They need to make these things on audio or readable on the computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Living with Lupus Book
I enjoyed this book. It is well written and easy to understand. It is not as technical as some books on the topic which makes it much easier to understand. I learned a vast amount of new information from this book. It offered practical advice/information. After I read it- I had my husband and mother read it -so they could understand my Lupus much better. Definitely worth the price of the book!

4-0 out of 5 stars A quick, easy read.
This book is a decent intro to the topic if you don't know much about it, and definitely gets points for being a quick, easy read.I would recommend it to someone that knows very little (or nothing) about lupus, but not for anyone that has a good knowledge base already. It does contain a lot of good information, but a lot of it is obvious common sense you don't need to pay for (like.. are you tired?rest!or a great way to exercise is to walk!)...

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Informative
Easy to read, with current information. Definitely a book to buy. Very helpful and answered a lot of questions. It was nice to see a whole chapter dedicated to APS & Pregnancy. Will be recommending this book to others.

Product Description
A comprehensive guide to noninvasive, nontoxic therapies for lupus--written by a lupus survivor.* The only book to focus on alternative therapies for lupus.* Includes therapeutic approaches drawn from the fields of naturopathic medicine, nutritional medicine, environmental medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, nontoxic dentistry, energy medicine, and psychological healing.* Lupus affects more than four million Americans and does not respond well to conventional treatments.

More than four million Americans (90 percent of them women) have been diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus, a chronic, debilitating disease of the autoimmune system that manifests itself with extreme fatigue, arthritic pain, rashes, and a host of other symptoms. Add to that the fact that lupus is notoriously difficult to diagnose, and the number of potential sufferers grows. Sharon Moore lived with lupus for several years before doctors finally put a name to it. The only therapies offered to her were pharmaceuticals--toxic drugs that could control or suppress some of her symptoms but couldn't cure her disease. Dissatisfied with this approach, she set about researching alternative treatments for her condition. Nine years later her health is greatly improved, and she has written this book to share the most effective natural healing techniques with other lupus sufferers.

Chock full of specific, scientific, well-documented evidence on effective alternative treatments, this book is a godsend for anyone suffering from lupus. Moore provides a comprehensive diagnostic checklist and helps readers identify the possible causes of their illness, from environmental toxins and dental amalgam fillings to compromised liver function and poor nutrition. She offers ways to nurture the mind and spirit when living with chronic disease and shows readers how they can rebuild their lives. Equally important, she writes with the understanding of someone who's been there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air!
I am a doctor, and was diagnosed with Lupus last year. I got this book because I know that there is a lot to be said about natural healing methods for chronic disease. There is a lot of good information here, and it is easy to read. I'd recommend it if you are looking for some direction, or need a place to start looking at alternative therapies for Lupus. I'm living proof that lifestyle modifications and natural therapies can truly change your path in life. I have made very swift progress with a combination of the conservative use of traditional western medicine, and natural healing methods such as those in this book. The harder you work at being healthy, the more it pays off :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Lupus Alternative Therapies That Work
This is an awsome book for anyone who suffers with Lupus. It has been a great help and this author is fantastic with all she has researched and doctors information that she shares. I recommend that anyone read this that has Lupus.

3-0 out of 5 stars informative but a bit too much information
I thought this book was good and I am happy the author is better (and hopefully continually getting better). I do think there are way too many ways she used to get better that sick people would find too overwhelming. The author also had the luxury of being a traveler-- many sick people couldn't live her life!

4-0 out of 5 stars good 3rd or 4th book
i found this book very helpful in offering some specific ideas on how to detox the body. That kind of info is completely absent from your typical 1st book on autoimmune disease, and most MDs have little to offer in that area as well- just drugs and more drugs to counteract the side effects of the initial drugs. This book gives some specific ideas on things to try, and how to go about implementing those ideas. I found it refreshing not to hear yet another voice tell me to expect to just be on and off prednisone until i eventually need a new set of kidneys, and that there was nothing I could do about it.

If you've just developed an autoimmune disease, then this is not the first book you want. there are lots of good first books with solid info in them.

I'm not connected to the author in any way. Just a reader.

A Really helpful book!.I have't read it all jet, but it seems to be really inspiring and helps to see lupus in a diferent way, with more hope and help to understand a lot of things about this illness.
I think the book wan't new as they said, or wasn't used but had been in the bookstore for a while, but i think i made a good deal for the pice that i paid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alifesaver!!
I have been diagnosed with Lupus for almost 40 years, but I was undiagnosed for 10 years. Finally an Internist put together my collection of ailments and diagnosed me as having Lupus. This was such a relief but also a frightening time as 40 years ago Lupus was still a fairly unknown. The blood tests, etc. had not yet been fully developed and what information was out there was pretty negative and scary.
This book was not on the market at the time and I didn't know how to cope with an illness that had changed my life and how to tell my family and friends what was wrong with me.
By the time I discovered this book I had learned to live with Lupus but this book was so marvelous in describing this crazy illness, that I gave copies to family members that wanted to know more.
I also have given numerous copies to individuals who had been diagnosed with life-changing illnesses such as diabetes, etc. The author's insight on how to deal with Lupus for yourself and your family is truly applicable to anyone facing a disease that will be around for the rest of your life.
I especially recommend as required reading the chapter that is directed to family members and how they can be helpful to the Lupus patient.
At this time I am ordering this book to be sent to my daughter who is experiencing some of the ailments that are typical of Lupus. I hope that she will get the help she needs in diagnosing what is wrong with her. In the meantime maybe this book will give her some help.

3-0 out of 5 stars Coping With Lupus: Apractical Guide to Alleviating the Chall
I have found this book to be a helpful well rounded guide to Lupus. From the symptoms before diagnosis to after diagnosis, and how to deal with every day challenges and side effects of the disease and treatments.I beleive it is a great jumping off point for the newly diagnosed. It dispells myths, and give a newly diagnosed patient comfort at a time that they may be feeling overwhelmed and desperate by the diagnosis of Lupus. It is a very easy read, as the doctor speaks in layman language rather than complicating things with lot's of medical termonolgy and anatomy terms. For a person who is looking for beginning over view of the disease it is very helpful. But, if you are looking for more datailed information on specific tests, treatments, or the physiology of the disease one would need to look further. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Unique Inspirational Open Minded Approach to a Better Quality of Life.
My spouse and daughter have Scleroderma and Lupus. If you are not aware of these devastating, life altering and disabling diseases, you should learn about them. Living in constant pain, depression, restricted mobility and humiliation takes its toll in addition to the health and wellness affects.
Waverly's book I consider a masterpiece of strong will, determination, focus and an honest open minded approach to a higher quality of life. Her inspirational vision accepting her condition, evaluation her situation, developing a plan and implementing it with consistent dedication using and allowing only positive influences from medications, wellness and holistic treatments to beliefs and idealisms, reminds us all by the end of the book, there is no doubt we all can learn and benefit from her journey.
This book has significantly increased my hope and desire for a better quality of life for my spouse and daughter, I will read it again and certainly recommend it to everyone. It's not just about Lupus.
I found her book at HealingLupusBook.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book!
When she says "Healing Lupus: Steps in a Personal Journey" she is giving you the beginning, the end and the subject matter, but the process is one that takes a book to understand. She actually had the idea to try to heal herself from this terrible disease and she did it, not overnight, but she did it. It takes determination, just a little bit, everyday to begin the process. If you can heal yourself from Lupus what more can you do? Her story is inspiring and tells me that if she can do it so can I. My story does not have Lupus but the disability is the same. To heal, just don't give up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you for writing this book
Healing Lupus is riveting reading to me, as a health professional, because it provide an honest, first-hand look at a unique experience of recovery from lupus. The insights here could be applied to other chronic illnesses as well. This book is invaluable to the thousands of lupus sufferers who need the kind of testimonial that this book offers, a hopeful, even miraculous recovery from an illness that Western medicine treats with prescription medications. Those medications begin the journey, but there is a surprise here. The medications are left behind after years of struggle. The mystery of author's healing from a debilitating, sometimes fatal, illness is unraveled through the eyes and unique voice of someone who has walked the walk. The author used emotional release as the key to her physical recovery - this is no mystery to her, only to those of us who have not yet encountered such a story. We walk with her step by step as the journey unfolds. ... Product Description
Part of the Oxford American Rheumatology Library, this concise, authoritative pocketbook provides the most up-to-date information on the diagnosis, treatment and management of lupus. The volume describes the pathophysiology of the condition, diagnostic strategies and tools, and current and emerging therapeutic options, focusing on direct clinical applications for busy healthcare professionals.
One million people in the United States suffer from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus), a chronic autoimmune disease that is potentially debilitating and sometimes fatal as the immune system attacks the body's cells and tissue, resulting in inflammation and tissue damage. SLE can affect any part of the body, but most often damages the heart, joints, skin, lungs, blood vessels, liver, kidneys and nervous system. The course of the disease is unpredictable, with periods of illness alternating with remission. It can be treated symptomatically, mainly with corticosteroids and immunosuppressants, though there is currently no cure. Several promising new treatments, however, are in late-stage clinical trials.
Lupus is one of several diseases known as the 'great imitator' because its symptoms vary so widely and it often mimics or is mistaken for other illnesses, and because the symptoms come and go unpredictably. As a result, patients present with varied symptoms to different practitioners and diagnosis can be elusive, with patients sometimes suffering unexplained symptoms and untreated lupus for years.Hence, a practical guide to the diagnosis and treatment of lupus would be valuable to an array of clinicians and may help expedite earlier diagnosis and better patient care.
The target audience is rheumatologists in training and primary care physicians who care for lupus patients and allied health professionals who assist in their management. The book will fulfill a need for a concise, practical guide to Lupus for clinicians that distills the principal features of this complicated, often misunderstood disorder.
Dr. Daniel J. Wallace is one of the world's leading authorities on the disorder, an eminent clinician who has treated over 2,000 lupus patients, the largest such practice in America. He is the author of another Oxford book--The Lupus Book, and the editor of the premier authoritative lupus textbook, Dubois' Lupus Erythematosus. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great information
This is a very thorough book about Lupus. It starts with the history of the disease and covers everything, like symptoms, diet, lab tests, effects on body systems, medications and their effects, conventional treatments, alternative treatments, and so much more.My only complaint is that it is written in "medicalese".I'm an R.N. and still some of it went over my head.Dr. Wallace is the "guru" of Lupus and everything he writes about it is wonderful. This is an extremely thorough book, but a little bit "up there".I'm not sure who the intended audience was for this, but it obviously is not Jane & John Q. Public.I've enjoyed it though, because it's a little "pocket rocket" (small and has everything n it).

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative Book
This book has been very informative.I was recently diagnosed with Lupus and had millions of questions.I have found everything I had wanted to know about, including the testing that was done.I recommend for anybody with Lupus.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very thorough book.
Being a Lupus survivor I had to buy this book as soon as I was diagnosed and it really answered many of my questions and helped to put to rest some of my fears. All hope is not lost.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lupus Q & A
I bought (5) different books on Lupus. This book was the best one with quick to find info later so I could ask my doctor about things he never mentioned. Also great to share with family members who hate to read (husband's) so they can learn more about how we feel. Lupus is very complicated to explain to others when you don't understand it yourself yet and each case and patient can have such differnt symptoms.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, but there are much better books out there.
Very basic overview stuff, and not completely up-to-date regarding the information.Questions are answered with a bare minimum of information, not thoroughly. The book is good if you're just starting out learning about things and want a very quick, easy read of an intro, but not if you want serious, in-depth knowledge.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
The only value this book has is that is does answer some questions about different tests given to help diagnose lupus. However, many of the answers contradict other answers given in the book.

The authors even go so far as to say that people with lupus may use the "excuse" that they have chronic pain to get out of doing things or to have others do things for them when they're not that sick! Well, I have lupus and would love to be able to do many things that I no longer can accomplish. That two supposed "experts" would say this made me see red! We have heard that it's all in our heads often enough! Please, please don't waste your money or time with this book. ... Read more

Product Description

Lupus is an extremely common, potentially treatable, disease of the immune system. It affects approximately 1 in 1000 women and is more common than diseases such as multiple sclerosis and leukaemia. Despite this, there is little information concerning the disease in contrast to other illnesses of similar prevalence.

Many people are unaware of the symptoms, treatment, and prevention of lupus. It is important that these topics are highlighted for many reasons. For example, a greater understanding of the symptoms of lupus will enable patients to recognise the symptoms earlier, and get treatment faster; before any serious damage is done. Similarly, awareness of preventative measures may reduce the number of cases of lupus that occur.

From a different perspective, it would be of great use to have an easily accessible source of information available to lupus patients that would highlight issues such as treatment options and sources of support.

In summary, although knowledge of lupus is growing, greater awareness of the disease amongst both patients and the general public is an issue that needs to be addressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hi Daisy
sorry it took more than a year to give you an answer daisy, but you'll find plenty of info &user reviews on the LFA patient message board about UVA1 phototherapy for lupus & related disorders...including how to assemble one using an FDA approved sun tanning canopy, prescribed medical lamps & a filter...you'll find it in the "UVA1 phototherapy" message thread, under the "Lupus Treatments" subject forum ... just look around the LFA message board, you'll find it ... & i must say, you're a great sister.

5-0 out of 5 stars Has anyone tried this therapy yet?
I'm interested in phototherapy and hope to build the UVA1 device that DeBartolo describes for my sister.Am wondering if any other readers of the book have tried it yet?The book is fascinating reading, well-documented and inspiring. There are many studies out there on phototherapy for other purposes(for example, Am J sports Med 2008;36:881-887;Arterioscler Thromb Vasc Biol. 2008:28:739-745;BMC Musculoskelet Disord. 2008:9:75;Circ J.2004;1146-1151;Electromyogr Clin Neurophysiol. 2008;48:229-231)but I don't read too much about it in the popular press. But if it can fire up the mitochondria and reduce inflammation, what a breakthrough.I appreciated his instructions for building a UVA1 device.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where there is light, there is hope
I have reviewed this book twice. I review books for a National Foundation. It offers more information for the treatment of Lupus (withholding drug treatment) than any other book I have reviewed. The information provided in this book allows a person with lupus to "look outside the box" of conventional drug treatment for lupus. Understand that in doing this the person may meet with some resistance from physicians. Who rightfully are doing what they know, what they have been taught. This treatment has not received the attention it deserves. Nor has the physician who heads this research, Dr. Hugh McGrath. The author is amazingly informed of the technology involved. He tells of his own battle and appears driven to regain his health. In searching what may help him, he finds this amazing treatment for the immune system, an approved NIH study, not a fly-by-night theory. I am grateful that the author, Anthony DeBartolo, was inspired to share with us this fascinating technology. Since the treatment doesn't involve drugs, the pharmaceutical companies are not interested. So people, rise up and claim your health, read this book. It may save your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treatment Above-Board
I've had lupus for 10 years and have read everything I could get my hands on. This is positively the most helpful book I've read. What is so surprising is that the UVA1 light treatment has also been around for 10 years. Like I just read in another review, I guess I'm lucky that a investigative journalist got sick. This is one lupus book I'm sure the money-grubbing drug company cartel didn't want written. Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lupus Underground was way overdue
Well-written, well-researched, well-reasoned and at times, more than a little funny. I think this book is a must for all lupus sufferers frustrated with currently approved FDA treatments. We're lucky that Mr. DeBartolo, a great investigative journalist, got sick. The 3 years of research he did to find a treatment that worked for him - UVA1 photo therapy - benefits us all. What I do not fully understand is why the work of Dr. McGrath at LSU has been so "long-ignored." Is it really because the big drug companies can't make a dime off his work? Makes me want to move to Canada! Especially useful (and informative) is the book's extensive reference of UVA1 lupus therapy research. Thank you, Mr. DeBartolo. You've given me some hope! ... The accelerating advances in molecular and cellular immunology have paved the way for development biologic agents that target specific pathways that contribute to the inflammatory response, but there is no strong evidence of their safety and efficacy. Moreover, the increased risk of renal allograft thrombosis and recurrence of Aupus nephritis constitute a substantial risk that should be thoroughly explored. This book explores the major advances that necessitate the evolution of basic and clinical research in order to investigate the management of this syndrome. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful info - looks at other symptoms not just ANA test
What a wonderful and insightful book.Having gone through several Rheumies and the whole denial thing, this book would have saved time and heartache.Philippa Pigache has included various ways of pinpointing the signs of SLE including the St. Thomas' Criteria. She also touches on various treatments including pharmaceutical as well as alternatives. Most importantly, she doesn't forget the mental well being of a person suffering from SLE!

I highly recommend this book for anyone that think they may have a form of Lupus to those that have been diagnosed. She also touches on Sjogren's, FMS, MCTD, Avascular Necrosis, Libman-Sacks and DIL.

It isn't "Systemic Lupus Erythematosus" by Geroge C. Tsokos, Caroline Gordon and Josef S. Smolen nor is it "Dubois' Lupus Erythematosus" but it does cover much valuable information that doesn't read like a medical tome. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps More Poetic Than Autobiographical
I think "Lupus Novice" is a best read for poetic, New Age (in this case, George Steiner) readers, but anyone with Lupus or any chronic illness should find it very worthwhile, insightful, and helpful.

This said, for a personal account, "Lupus Novice" seems strangely impersonal. The few interest rousing moments of personal revelation, tension, and criticism, are fairly quickly muted and/or never returned to.Also, I think the social and political dimension of modern chronic illnesses like Lupus, CFS, MS, Lyme, and so forth, all of which grow daily in number, might receive much more attention because they are so absent in the media.

5-0 out of 5 stars Endorsed by the Institute of Anti-Aging and Longevity
Laura Chester is a gem.She writes and excellent journey of her issues with Lupus SLE.It is a wonderful insight to her soul and can help hundreds in dealing with this terrible disease.I think a big, big, big part of the diary is how she discribes her physician, Dr. Jesse Stoff. This medical doctor writes the forward to this amazing book and is mentioned many times on how he helped Laura understand this disease and what she had to go through to immune her immune function and left her body beat the disease. What Lupus patients have to understand is that Laura Chester's journey and experience is being true to herself on why the disease happened in the first place because of stress and imbalanced lifestyles and dealing with infection. All of these things are outlined in Dr. Jesse Stoff's two other books, The Prostate Miracle and Chronic Fatiuge Syndrome: The Hidden Epidemic. What's interesting in the updated version of Lupus Novice is that Laura doesn't even remember a lot of the pains she went through because she's on the road to recovery and that the past has nothing to do with her future of wellness, since it was her past issues in her life that caused the stress which lead to her disease. This is truely a fasinating book that I recommend at our Institute of Anti-Aging and Longevity to all our Lupus patients along with Dr. Stoff's other two books. In fact, the American Lupus Foundation, highly recommends Lupus Novice also to all the people with Lupus. Again, an outstanding book about, love, compassion, determination, self-actualization and witnessing to all those who suffer from lupus. Anyone interested in the protocals that Dr. Stoff applied to Laura Chester can email us at the Institute of Anti-Aging and Longevity...or call us at 1-800-878-6659 and we will be more than glad to put you on the road to recovery.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating and insightful journey towards healing
I found this book by accident in a bookstore one day, and ended up on the floor reading the whole thing in one sitting. It is a compelling and insightful account of the author's journey towards healing from SLE, exploring various natural and conventional therapies, and eventually findingrelief using anthroposophical medicine, a system somewhat like homeopathy developed by Rudolph Steiner. This also led me to investigate this form of medicine and the field of anthroposophy in general. ...
