4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book
I thought this was a good book, and very easy to read. I have a friend with lupus, and she is very much like the main lady in this book. It is good to see how other people deal with these things. I think the author knows how to touch the heart of people and that is a very special gift. I read this book, and Stolen Moments by Fisher, and both have helped me in a big way to understand my friend with this illness. Hope they find a cure for it soon. I would recommend this book for anyone dealing wtih any illness, personally or with someone they love.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pumpkin..A review
Having Lupus I have been searching and searching for a book that truly expresses what I am going through. When I started reading Pumpkin I realized that I had found that book.I read the book in one sitting and am going to suggest it to my family.I am experiencing much of what Eileen went through, it's as if the book were about me personally.Patricia does a remarkable job conveying Eileen's thoughts although she did not have the disease herself. She really understood her daughter well and Eileen was so lucky for that.I would recommend this book for others who have Lupus as well as their family members.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pumpkin - a deeply touching story
I read this book as I have recently gotten involved with the Dorough Lupus Foundation which was set upafter Howie Dorough of the Backstreet Boys lost his sister Caroline to Lupus.

This story is about Eileen and was written by her mother.Eileen fought hard against the effects of Lupus.Every setback that was thrown at her she fought against, and in the end, she lost. But her strength and perserverance moved me.

I highly recommend this book to everyone.Lupus is a disease that is not as widely known as others, but is very devastating. We need to to find a cure for this illness so no more people die from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
Once I began reading I could not put it down.It made me laugh and brought me to tears. It is such a beautiful tribute to the author's daughter and allows Eileen to be loved and admired by people who never had the joy of meeting her.God bless her family and their strength, it was truly inspiring.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review:
I have a sister who died of Lupus and reading this book really does explain what goes on in your life when someone close to you is ill. Even though you feel hopeless, even though you're scared for that person, you know you have to be strong and cherish every single moment. I enjoyed this book because it reminds you how important your life is. Eileen had brothers, sisters and parents who loved her and even though she was sick she tried to make the most of it which is inspirational to all of us. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent
This book was very informative to me.I have read many books about lupus, butI still learned some things from thisbook. Doesn't explain much about thetests, but all in all was a prettygood book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not enough helpful hints for coping
The person with lupus must struggle with strong and conflicting emotionswhile trying to maintain as normal a life as possible despite pain, disability, and changes in personal relationships. This book attempts tooffer ideas for dealing with these problems.

Unfortunately, this booksometimes glosses over the difficulties the person with lupus faces. Thereare some helpful hints in it; but often, the author spends far more spacedescribing a problemthan offering solutions for solving it. For example, here is the complete advice for people worried about no longer being ableto work:"Talk to people. Speak to others with lupus who cannot work.Find out what they are doing to cope. Maybe you'll get some ideas that willhelp you conquer this fear."

When the author does provide hints forcoping, he often doesn't go into much detail. For example, the section onusing relaxation techniques to combat pain contains just four sentences. Itmentions meditation, autogenic training, hypnosis, and deep breathing, butit does not even define them, let alone give instructions for any of themor tell you where to find out more information.

There are no easyanswers for the obstacles people with lupus face each day; still, thereader would have been better served if the author had spent less time"feeling the reader's pain" and more time helping her solve it.

3-0 out of 5 stars VERY INFORMATIVE
I read this book and found it to contain lots of very imortantinfromation. . It was well researched.

For those of you interseted in alittle different approach you might read Stolen Moments by Barbara Fisher. This beautiful love stroy is fiction but based on the authors own life withlupus. ..It makes readers aware that life and love are precious and neverto be taken for granted. This was edited by Ms Fisher's own lupusspecialist and it is called the love story of the 90's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most down to earth book for the common person to understand
The compassion and understanding in which this was written truely made me feel like I was not alone nor crazy.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book
I read this book years ago when I was first diagnosed with lupus and found it to be very informative and helpful. It is written in such a manner that it isn't dry or boring. It gives you all the information you need to know and also makes you laugh and gives you hope. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is newly diagnosed or knows someone with lupus. It's quick and easy reading. ... Read more

Product Description
THE HIDDEN EPIDEMIC There are legions, literally millions upon millions of people, living in pain and suffering in silence and is the number one reason for doctor visits in the U.S. and nothing else even comes close. The number of people is staggering: 200 million who suffer pain on some regular basis, at least once a month, and 92 million people in unrelenting, chronic pain every day without letup seven days a week. Everything to be found regarding dealing with pain revolves around managing, coping with, or in some way learning how to live with pain. There is not a word to be found as regards how one might go about removing the cause of the pain because it has been accepted as fact that the cause is unknown. At present there are many books on the topic of pain in general, as well as numerous books on specific conditions, but not a single one of them reveals the underlying cause of the pain and how to remove it, eliminating the need for drugs. Until now. Harvey Diamond is the bestselling author of the enormously successful series of FIT FOR LIFE books. Harvey has one of the most compelling and moving human interest stories you will ever hear. While serving his country in Vietnam, as a 21 year old in 1966, he was exposed to Agent Orange which brought on a condition called peripheral neuropathy. Along with extreme, unrelenting pain, this condition also slowly deteriorates muscles until individuals are confined to a wheelchair unable to move. Most cases are fatal. In his landmark new book, LIVING WITHOUT PAIN, Harvey reveals to those 200 million people who are in pain and looking for answers, how they too can live life free of pain without having to rely on dangerous drugs. Harvey's engaging and light-hearted, reader-friendly writing style highlights this book which is brimming over with common sense information that changes people's lives. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite so far
This book, while not as info heavy as so many of the others (like The Lupus Book: A Guide for Patients and Their Families), has been my favorite so far. It's a great resource as far as how adapt your life after diagnosis. It's a very validating read, and I'm going to recommend it to friends and family so they have an idea of what lupus is and how it impacts one's life.Another great thing about this book is that it covers all lupus; the advice given applies to all cases, from mild to life-threatening.This is why it's more general, from a scientific perspective, but it's why I found the book to be so valuable. It's just the info I've been looking for! ... Product Description
Though one of the lesser known illnesses, Lupus affects an enormous number of people worldwide (there are 1 million sufferers in the USA alone), and is far more prevalent than many better known illnesses (such as MS and leukaemia). Lupus is a disease of the immune system, resulting from the over-production of antibodies. Typical first symptoms include skin rashes, hair loss, joint swellings, fever; however, it can then go on to start affecting major organs, particularly the kidneys, with a resulting risk to life. It is a disease that predominantly affects young women (between fifteen and forty). In spite of its high incidence, little has been written for the sufferer. Fortunately, the options for the Lupus sufferer have improved markedly in recent years, with the advent of self-help groups, and improved drug treatments. The long-term prognosis is therefore far more favourable now than it has been in the past.As head of the Lupus Research Unit at St Thomas' Hospital, and life president of Lupus UK, Graham Hughes has an unsurpassed knowledge of Lupus. From a world-wide authority on the subject, Lupus: The FACTS provides the sufferer with the information they need, on a range of issues, such as diagnosis, treatment, pregnancy, and diet.Drawn from his years of experience treating patients, Dr Hughes provides the sufferer, and their family and friends, with concise, readable, information on the illness, with a bookthat emphasises the immense positive contribution that they can make to improve their situation. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Lupus: The Facts byDr. Graham Hughes (Oxford, England)
Lupus: The Facts, provides alot of much needed information for the Lupus patient. The facts were a bit over simplified and some of the more rare symptons (such as Lupus and Hives) are not addressed. I found Dr. WallacesLupus book much more in depth and informative for the money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise and informative
Dr. Hughes, England's leading lupus specialist, has written a concise and impressively informative book. It's not as thick or as detailed as Wallace's The Lupus Book and is light on nephritis information, but LupusFacts is well organized and delivers important information quickly andunderstandably. It also gives a slightly different perspective fromAmerican medicine. It's less intimidating than Wallace's or Dr. Lahita'sbooks so it's a good introduction to this often misunderstood disease.Atthe same time, it would still make a good addition to the experienced lupuspatient's library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book and very prompt service
This book had a lot of good and accurate information. Service from Amazon was also outstanding. I continue to have good experiences with Amazon and my choices of books I purchase from them. Book arrived in half the time they estimated, which was good becasue I think they way overestimate standard delivery times.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure quackery - worse than snake oil
This book is a repository of a litany of scares and pure quackery, much of which has been debunked by research and clinical trials decades ago. Autoimmune diseases cannot be treated by any of its bizarre misrepresentations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A holistic and clear approach to autoimmune disease
This is an excellent book if you want to try to find ways of helping yourself overcome autoimmune diseases without just taking suppressive drugs from your doctor. Edelson explains very clearly the immune process, what happens when T Cells start attacking you rather than fighting for you, exactly what 'free radicals' are and why they are so important, and most importantly, he suggests that in addition to the genetic factor, much autoimmune disease is called by environmental toxins and in particular mercury from dental work. This book is the first one I have found that has given me answers and suggestions about how to work with and overcome an autoimmune disorder.I am deeply grateful.

1-0 out of 5 stars A bad, BAD idea...
I would be dead if I followed this author's suggestions.I've been diagnosed with a very rare autoimmune disorder that causes life-threatening allergic reactions. One of my triggers is heat.I used to love the sauna, but I would have to be CRAZY to visit one again.Sure... I eat a healthy (organic) diet, minimize my exposure to chemicals and heavy metals, get plenty of sleep... but I also avoid my triggers and I'm faithful about taking the medications my doctors have prescribed. This is how I stay out of the ER.One size does not fit all.

Educating yourself is extremely important if you think you have an autoimmune disorder.BUT... this book is not the way to do it.Run the other way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book on where to start your healing journey
I started reading this about 2 years after I had already worked with a doctor who helped me become symptom-free of my RA. I have done probably half of the recommendations in the book through my doctor & I am comfortable with where I am at. I will hold it for reference if I start to regress.

This book is very comprehensive. It can be overwhelming for someone who has been eating fast foods or boxed processed foods & who has only been to a conventional doctor who writes Rx's all day. Not to discount any of the info in the book -- it is all great. But I believe people have to want to truly heal & get out of the mentality that "there is a pill for every ill." You have to take control of your own health.

The author explains the common issues behind autoimmune disorders & how to work through the symptoms. I know I couldn't have recovered by myself, I did it with the help of an out of state doctor, Dr. Richard Brouse.

The author promotes his wellness center, which I think is fine. It's a starting place. But there may be adequate local doctors that can help. The author provides a list of questions to ask them when interviewing them for treating you.

Overall, very good reference book. Just try not to get overwhelmed with all of the protocol recommendations. [...] & [...] are good starting points as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Surviving the Wolf
Embracing the Wolf: A Lupus Victim and Her Family ... this book was awesome it really told the journey that you and your family take when the wolfe joins your family (uninvited I might add) but it shows that you can overcome the everyday problems and come to be able to survive and thrive with this problem

5-0 out of 5 stars Lupus Patients and Familys Must Order this!!
I am a Lupus Patient and had NO idea what my family would go through when I had my diagnosis. It was right there for me to read and grasp but I didn't until after the fact. I watched my family get torn apart and almost lost my number one supporter (my husband) If I had a picture into what I was going to go through I would of been able to prepare and understand what was going on. Well this book is open and honest and would provide that cushion. I recommend it highly

4-0 out of 5 stars Living with the Big Bad Wolf
This is the story of Joanna Baumer Permut who, in the midst of a wonderful job and family, finds herself not able to get well.Unexplained aches, pains and tiredness.Eventually she receives the diagnosis of Lupus and what happens next in the book is not so much a story of her, but the story of how Lupus affected her family, most importantly, her husband.

What I liked is that Joanna didn't pull any punches. She was very blunt about her symptoms and her feelings. But, she was also very straigh-forward about the clues she took from her husbnad, Steven. How she could tell he wasn't "embracing the wolf" and giving her the support she needed.

Even though this book was written in 1989, the story is playing out in someone else's life, somewhere in the world. The treatment for Lupus has changed and more and more people in the world are being educated about it.

Reading this book has given me even more hope for the future....knowing how far Lupus education has come, excites me because I know that I, we, are making a big difference in lives of people, real people such as Joanna and Steven.

4-0 out of 5 stars helpful for friends of Lupus sufferers also
Joanna Permut's book Embracing The Wolf is primarily the story of how the author and her husband came to terms with her lupus, and how they both learned to accept it.That allowed the author to summon all her resources to fight the disease, and find a healthier and happier life.

I don't have lupus, but someone close to me does. This book I found to be immensely helpful. The book is not just about lupus, but it's about a couple coming to terms with a disease, and two individuals coming to terms with THEIR disease in different ways.

I read this book because I wanted to better understand what my friend is going through with lupus. If you have a friend with lupus, I recommend this book to you.

Lupus can be so confusing to outsiders-- I'm sure many a romantic relationship and many a friendship have been strained or ended because non-sufferers don't understand the nature of the disease.

If you have a friend with lupus, do yourself a favor and read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars very good product
I bought this particular DVD as a gift for a friend, so I did not open and listen to it, but my experience with other health and wellness DVDs by same author have been excellent.I highly recommend all her work.

5-0 out of 5 stars finally able to relax
I bought this as a cassette, and thought it was the last available copy of the recording. So happy to see it available as a CD, I'm buying it again! I have really bad insomnia and this helped me relax and sleep. I also have been dealing with autoiummune stuff for 17 years, and these affirmations are right on target. Usually guided imagery doesn't work for me, but this recording does.

Whilst there have been great advances in research into the genetic background of lupus and new interventions such as stem-cell transplants, there is still a surprising lack of information available for patients, carers and their families. Written by the former President of the British Society for Rheumatology and the current co-director of the Lupus Center of Excellence in Pittsburgh, USA, this new edition of Lupus: The Facts reflects major developments in our understanding of the causes of lupus. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The New Arthritis Breakthrough
I advise anyone with arthritis to read this book. You will never hear about this vital information from established medical practitioners. The pharmaceutical industry has persuasive power over medical research that may work to vastly prolong medical breakthroughs from reaching millions of arthritis sufferers. I found this book fascinating.

4-0 out of 5 stars The New Arthritis Breakthrough
The book was a great deal, since the list price was $22.95 and it was a hardback edition. It did have some type of a light, coffee stain throughout most of the book, but it was in the right margin so it didn't affect the readability. For the cost of shipping however, I feel that it should've been shipped priority mail, not book rate.
Very informative book written about the history of antibiotic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, and other related conditions, which I am using to decide whether or not to utitilize this therapy, for which my doctor has provided a prescription, and the Arthritis Foundation now lists in their pamphlet on medications for arthritis.

4-0 out of 5 stars earning an alternate treatment for RA
I found this book to be enlighting.I took it to my next visit with my Dr. and was pleased to find out that not only was he aware of this treatment but accecpted it.He did tell me that Mira is not without side effects stated in the book.Like anything else, you must be your own advocate and learn and question the treatment. My RA is mild and the treatment does not involve some of the meds mentioned in the book that are bad for you and if needed we will use more of the anti-biotic treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Arthritis Breakthrough
This is an excellent book and very specific and informative. It gives one hope that they just don't have to live with the pain and problems of rheumatoid arthritis. It also gives one information to take to doctors, many of whom seem to be clueless about how to treat this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my life!!!!
I recently purchased this book on a recommendation from a doctor. I have severe fibromyalsia and he wanted me to read the book before I went through with the antibiotic IV treatments he offers. After reading this book, I was so excited. The book explains exactly why people with RA and fibro feel the way they do. I even cried when I read some of the stories from people because now I know they don't have to suffer the way they do. I decided to go through with the antibiotic IV treatments and 4 months later I am a completely new person. I have energy again and I feel SO MUCH BETTER! I am still on pain medication, but I have been able to go longer between doses and some days I don't have to take as many. I feel like I have my life back. After 14 years of having to lay down 2 times a day and some days not even being able to take a flight of stairs, I am so grateful for the treatments. Anyone out there suffering from the diseases listed in this book, please, please, please read this and go through with the treatments. You have nothing to loose and EVERYTHING to gain. Good luck and feel better! ... Read more
