Systemic lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease characterized by organ system damage (for example, to the skin and kidneys) and is often accompanied by fever, seizures, and malaise. The epidemiology of the disease is complex, reflecting the multiple genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors that contribute to it. Although the overall prevalence varies, the relatively high incidence among women of childbearing age (about one in a thousand) is evidence of the influence of hormonal factors, while the fact that relatives are also affected gives weight to the genetic component.

Doctors that treat lupus should read this book.
Published in 1997, this volume is a result of a conference held in September of 1996. It is a collection of over 30 journal articles and poster papers. Because it is aimed at doctors, people comfortable readingmedical journal articles will find its coverage of NP-SLE interesting; it'sprobably a bit on the technical side for most non-MD readers.Any doctor(primary care or specialist) that treats patients with lupus should readthis book if they're not already familiar with it's contents.At leastthat's the opinion of this reviewer, who became acutely aware of thedisturbing level of ignorance of NP-SLE among even well-regardedrheumatologists. ... Interesting Story of a Journey
I, too, was fascinated with the author's journey and disturbed by herrelationships with others. She is judgemental and critical of those uponwhom she relies. And she relies on them very, very much. Obviously shecomes from wealth and means,never struggling with the pain and difficultiesthat come from financial ruin, dealing with Social Security Disability,poverty and working, even while very sick, when your very survival dependsupon it. Not all of us have Wealthy Doctor Daddy to rescue us whenever weare in trouble. Having said that, I relate to and admire her chutzpah indealing with her doctors, her efforts to be informed and educated about herillness and her willingness to take responsibility for managing herillness. Her story is most useful in showing persons with chronic illnesshow to manage their care and advocate for themselves. It is a compellingstory, nonetheless!

This book helped me learn to live with a chronic illness.
I think it took a lot of courage for Ms. Szasz to write this book.Itreally delves into her past personal life and shows a person how to try anddeal with life on a day to day basis.Having a chronic illness is no pieceof cake and to me when I read about her getting up and going to workeveryday and trying to live as normal a life as possible, it encouraged meto do the same.Some may say that it gives readers a sense that they willgo through exactly what the author has, but if the patient has beenproperly educated by their physician that shouldn't happen.By the time Ifinished her book, like one other stated I felt that I just said goodbye toa close friend and also 'Thank You'.Thank you, not only for showing methat you can live a normal life, but in all honesty, you should withoutever lowering your expectations or changing your dreams.

Although sometimes alarming, this is an arresting book
Ms. Szasz' journey with lupus is decidedly atypical, and could unduly alarm many who suffer from lupus. Yet, herpluckiness and approach to her illness can help the faint of heart advocate for themselves in dealing with their illness and with their physicians.Although I often felt that her relational functionings left something to be desired, and felt this was a book I wouldn't want to own, in the end, I had formed an affection for her. I often remember and savor the lessons I learned and her wry wit.Finishing the book was like saying goodbye to an enigmatic friend who has lived life with bravery and zest, and who taught you a few flourishes along the way..

This is not a book which details symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of lupus, but rather, as the author states, a book about what it is like to live daily with a chronic illness whose effects are not readily apparent nor understood by those who surround its target.

I found Ms. Szasz' book to be disheartening.
Of all the lupus books I have read ( and I have read many). this was the most discouraging of all. I admired Ms. Szasz's tenacity but I found the course of her illness to be terrifying. Her relationships with others sent me into depression. Over the course of time, I have found that books by rheumatolgists with short anecdotes about patients serve my needs better than stories of a single patient's journey.

Smart woman, strong character
This book is highly recommendable for anyone who has to contend with disease and physicians, which is most of us. Suzy Szasz, daughter of the brilliant psychiatrist-philosopher Thomas Szasz, contends with the vicissitudes of health and life intelligently and gracefully. Despite her debilitating condition she isn't debilitated: she doesn't become the obligatory American victim. Some readers will resent her relentless stand against personal adversity since it tilts against the modern American spirit. Others will admire her and take away the unspoken lessons of her quiet courage. You will find no whining in this book and no scapegoating. Love it!
I am loving it! Readers of Dan Brown type of books will love this - history, adventure, snakes and wolf-men. Where I cam from tales of lycanthropy are all common. Werewolves and vampires are things we grow up with. This is very atmospheric book. Gothic as well. I really liked it. If you want to know where myth of vampires and werewolves this book has very good theory.

Not recomended - unless novice researcher
Unless you have no confidence in using the web to search for information, this book will provide you with little that is new. It does guide an absolute novice by providing avenues for possible information. However, the title of sourcebook is misleading as most of the content is very generic and can apply to anyone wanting to research information on any disease.
