Product Description

Emerging infectious diseases continue to increase both in incidence and geographic distribution worldwide. Many of these diseases are vector-borne, including malaria (re-emerging), West Nile virus, Lyme disease, American boutonneuse fever (a new rickettsial disease), and others. For example, Chikungunya, a mosquito-borne disease, recently caused over 150,000 cases on one small island in the Indian Ocean. Many scientists fear that Chikungunya will soon spread to the New World in a manner similar to WNV. This book will be a succinct reference for the very important interface between infectious diseases and medical entomology.

Jerome Goddard summarizes the latest thinking about the biological, entomological, and clinical aspects of the major vector-borne diseases around the world. The book covers mosquito-, tick-, and flea-borne diseases, and a variety of other miscellaneous vector-borne diseases, including Chagas' disease, African sleeping sickness, onchocerciasis, scrub typhus, and louse-borne infections. The author provides for each disease a description of the vector involved, notes on its biology and ecology, distribution maps, and general clinical guidelines for treatment and control.

This new edition is updated with the latest research findings and current theories about infectious disease and arthropods. Numerous new, high quality line drawings and photographs of offending arthropods and the lesions they cause are also included. At a time when vector-borne diseases have increased their spread, Infectious Diseases and Arthropods provides physicians, infectious disease specialists, medical entomologists, and public health officials with an up-to-date, readily accessible, gold-standard reference source.

This is a really great product. I'm taking a Medical Entomology class at my University and needed to purchase this book for the course. Since it was really expensive at my university bookstore, I searched here on Amazon.com for a much better price. I saved over $100.00, and my book arrived in excellent condition. I am well pleased and will definitely recommend the supplier to friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, and Lyme Disease
There are plenty of theories about what causes Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, and other similar conditions. The literature can often be confusing. One specialist will say that the sole cause of these conditions is a virus leftover from childhood, another will say it's food intolerances, and still another will say that the conditions don't actually exist.

Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia & Lyme Disease looks at these issues in another way. The authors don't try to define a one size fits all miracle pill that cures these conditions. Instead, the book presents a variety of alternative medicine practitioners who look at the individual to see how to help him or her.

Essentially, it's a three part plan. First, do testing to find the root cause. Is there a virus? Are there immune deficiencies? Are there nutritional issues? Is stress an issue? Next, treat these conditions through drugs, supplements, cleansings, etc. Finally, make appropriate changes to bring balance to the system through lifestyle changes, proper nutrition, exercise, stress management, and emotional release.

If you have been diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, or Lyme Disease, then you need to get a copy of Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia & Lyme Disease. Although not comprehensive, it is the closest thing that I've seen to a definitive alternative medicine guide. What I like most is that this book is that it gives a variety of alternatives and avenues of thought.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease
This book is jam-packed with information for treating the multiple dysfunctions found in Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease. It provides more insights on how to treat the latter two conditions than any other book I have read. What's even more impressive, it presents perspectives from a multitude of experts, so that a well-rounded approach to healing can be formulated.
I had to read this book several times to absorb all of the information in it and gained many valuable insights from it.
That said, I found the information on Lyme Disease to be sorely lacking and the section on Lyme to be rather small. Also, in many cases, CFIDS, Fibromyalgia ARE actually manifestations of Lyme Disease, and I don't recall the book emphasizing this.
Granted, much information about how to treat Lyme has just recently emerged and this information may have not been available at the time that this book was published, yet I believe that a more in-depth discussion of Lyme would have been appropriate.
Overall, however, this book is an excellent source of information for anyone wanting to learn about the aforementioned conditions and how to manage them.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia & Lyme Disease
Overall it is very informative. However, it was lacking in areas such as how to manage low blood pressure which is found in 70% of chronic fatigue patients. In fact, the tilt test which is used by the Social Security Administration (for disability claims)as a marker for the syndrome is never mentioned (my blood pressure dropped to 56/33 during this test). Dr. Cheney and Dr. Bell as well as other leading doctors/researchers who were/are the pioneers in identifying and treating CFS/FMS have protocols for low bp which would be helpful to CFS patients. There is little attention paid to the real leaders in this field. Although Teitelbaum, Chaitow, and Lapp were mentioned, other leaders were forgotten. There is serious research being done (and findings) at the University of Oregon and University of Miami that was totally neglected. In place of referencing these leading doctors, physicians like Dr. Haimes are referenced who is skilled with hgh therapy for anti-aging but who is not very knowledgeable with CFS or Fibromylagia nor does he claim to specialize in CFS/FMS treatments (the two syndromes I suffer with and subjects of this book). So readers have to take care not to use these physician references in the book as referrals to doctors who subscribe to the protocols/insights of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably thorough and right on the money!
Holy Smokes!I have been looking for the answers to my environmental illness/fybromyalgia problems for nearly 3 years, and have just been diagnosed with Lyme Disease as well. The answers to my remaining questions were found IN THIS ONE BOOK!

The authors have made sure to show pictures, diagrams, etc., so even the lay person can understand where certain body parts reside and how they do or do not work, depending on your situation.I consider myself to be reasonably well-informed on the subjects covered in Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia and Lyme Disease; and I have been able to help many others who sufferer with these diseases. Yet I have NEVER seen such a wonderful resource all in one place before! If you have these health problems, don't pass this one by!There is a lot you can do for yourself without having to damage your body/liver further with just massive doses of heavy-duty allopathic meds. :-):-) ... Confronting Lyme Disease: What Patient Stories Teach Us (IPPY Award Winner - Health/Medicine/Nutrition)

This is probably the best book I have come across on chronic diseases.I wish there were books like this for other chronic diseases.I came to know about this book when I was trying to help a Lyme disease victim, a friend of a family member.I got this book for them and they said it was very helpful for them. After they returned the book I read it and found how ignorant I was about this disease. This is probably one of the worst diseases to get.Considering all the hurdles these people have to go through having to get proper care.Misdiagnosis seems to be the normal pattern I see for all these brave worriers. My heart goes out for them.

One interesting fact about this book is the authors have provided all the references for people to get additional helpful information.Practically all the symptoms have been listed in the stories of these victims and it is easy to compare with your own symptoms.

I am not new to misdiagnosis by medical doctors.I have seen it all my life and experienced it myself many times. This is a must read book for all the people and not just Lyme disease victims. The most important facts to remember is "Doctors are not gods. They do not know everything.Medical science is very complicated."I only wish some of them are not arrogant but humble and listen to patients. There are a few good doctors we have to be lucky to get them.As it is written in this book please try to learn as much as possible about your disease and get all the help. All the references you need to consult are in this book.

I have been a researcher in medical science for the first 24 years and worked in pharmaceutical companies in developing drugs for the next 24 years of my life. The progress in medical science most of the time is by chemists, biologists, biochemists, pharmacologists and physiologists etc.Medical doctors are not responsible all the advancement in medicine.Dr. Rita Stanley is highly qualified with a background in Physiology and Biochemistry, a victim herself and helped many in a support group. She has Ph.D. from an accredited university and not a mail ordered degree. This is very well written book in a scholarly way.

The first scientist who was responsible for eradicating communicable diseases, Louis Pasteur is a chemist and a biologist. He constantly told every one he is not a medical doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWARD WINNING BOOK SHOWS COMPASSION FOR LYME SUFFERING
This Award Winning book presents stories of Lyme patients with compassion, intelligence and a keen understanding of what it is like to have this illness. It is a timeless book about the human condition, and hope and humanity radiate through the personal stories of suffering. The reader is left with a better understanding of the personal nature of what illness can do to the body but that it cannot rob the soul of spirit.

The book seems to be a perfect companion to the new documentary "Under Our Skin: The Untold Story of Lyme Disease" and adds an insightful personal element to the book "Cure Unknown".

A few hate-filled recent reviews seem designed to divert the potential reader from this book by labeling it as "junk" and by attempting to negate the positive responses.Neither this book nor its subject matter could be considered anything less than compassionate, uplifting, and humbly intelligent.

1-0 out of 5 stars HAD FRIENDS DO 5 STARS! MINE IS IN TRASH CAN
This book came out and vast numbers were asked to write a positive review.

I bought the book, and have since literally thrown it away. No one reading what is out now could possibly find this to be a book with any staying power. It will drift slowly and surely to the back of this topic list due to useless medicial information, that some college freshman Lyme and tick infection patients know better. These non-physicians actually think they know better then real life treatment leaders and emerging thought leaders nationally and internationally. Are they sober? What arrogance!

And as to the stories of bad medicine.....Welcome to the modern world. We will be lucky if any good MD's are around in 25 years.

You were smart to get all your pals to write reviews. The book is trash.

1-0 out of 5 stars THE WORST LYME BOOK NOW IN PRINT
Lyme disease and its co-infections is supposedly strength of this book. Yet is clear neither author knows anything of serious use in advanced Lyme care and as to co-infections -- Forget about it!

Virtually every book in print is better than this poorly written junk. I know the authors told all their contacts to write a review because the US Constitution does not get this many PERFECT ratings. Get real.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money
Boring. Painful. Tedious. Whining in agony.

If you feel the need to be miserable, buy this amazingly boring book. The ugly cover is the best part of this tomb of despair. These Lyme patient struggles are handled 20x better by the exceptional writing of two real writers:

PJ Langhoff's Large print version of "It's All In Your Head," Patient Stories From the Front Lines: Intimate Aspects of Chronic and Neuropsychiatric Lyme Disease

And by the Discovery Magazine Senior Editor, Pan Weintraub's celebrated masterpiece, Cure Unknown: Inside the Lyme Epidemic.

Why read in agony basic old information when you can read easy lovely prose from the real pros.

Product Description
This book is written not to simply provide the obvious facts concerning Lyme disease, but to provide possible solutions for maximizing the integrity of the body, mind, and spirit. The myth is made clear in this book that true health and healing does not come from a bottle.True health and healing is a function of the human organism. If one must continue to take any medicine forever in order to feel normal then it is obvious that the medicine in not correcting anything, and you will be a slave to the medicine forever.Another myth revealed in this book is the common misconception that "I will be well when my doctor kills all of these bacteria."

This book represents the latest in our scientific advancements, such as the new understanding of how microbes communicate with each other in order to survive attacks from antibiotics; how bacteria are now know to mutate, becoming antibiotic-resistant sometimes potentially within the first 20 minutes of taking the medicine. This book presents the most advanced understanding of how every tissue in the body is indeed a liquid crystal, and how this crystalline matrix is utilized by microbes to communicate across great distances in the body.It goes on to provide the latest understanding of how healing and microbial control is maintained in the body, based upon this crystalline matrix understanding of the human body.

This book has the potential to change the way medicine is practiced. It is written in such a way that is easy to understand, knowing that people with chronic Lyme disease may have more difficulty understanding what they read.

This is a "How To" book that every doctor and Lyme sufferer will find something that will change their life. ... Read more

If you suffer from Lyme or care for a Lyme sufferer, you should take the time to read this book.It has a lot of information and with Lyme, you can never learn enough.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware of "Dr." David Jernigan and his claims...
This guy, Dr. David Jernigan, advertises like a new age snake oil salesman.I wouldn't put my health in the hands of a multi-level marketer who leads people to believe he is a Medical Doctor...he is not and MD, he is a chiropractor making and selling his own products. When his self made expensive "products" fail very seriously ill lyme patients, he blames them, accusing them of being negative and blaming them for their lack of spirituality.Beware of his sales people as "cured" patients.
He also lurks on lyme disease patient forums to see what they say about his treatments/products and when they are not getting well, again he blames them.Don't fall for this - there are plenty of reputable alternatives to treat chronic lyme disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent treatment and overview of Lyme Disease
I was told I had ALS in April 2002. After research and being put on the right track, I tested positive for Lyme Disease July 2002. I wish I had this book in 2002. Dr. Jernigan's approach and treatment for lyme disease, makes this the best written book on the illness that I have read. Dr. Jernigan explains the complex nature of lyme disease and the steps needed to detox, rebuild and kill the pathogens. An awesome writing style which allows you to understand things as a patient. Dr. Jernigan shares treatment protocols which are easy to follow at home, plus he is reachable at his clinic. After reading the book you have a complete understanding of the disease, treatments options, and hope. Excellent read for a complex disease that leaves many people on their own for finding information and treatment. Like I said, I wish I had this book when I was first diagnosed, but at least I have it now. Jon Davis-Ohio Hunter

5-0 out of 5 stars Gave me back my life after having Chronic Lyme
Since my last review in June 2006, I am still in remission from Lyme Disease and Ehrlichiosis after suffering for over 10 years thanks to this book.Dr. Jernigan addresses every aspect of this disease so not only does one get an education about lyme disease, one is given the tools to learn how to heal themselves.

I don't agree with the "Red Flag" comment that Dr. Jernigan is trying to sell his own brand of neutraceuticals.Dr. Jernigan could use "common" botanicals found from any website or herb stores, but he does not.Instead, he did extensive research on botanicals to see what would be effective and tested them using Bio-Resonance Scanning to make sure not only they are safe, but effective as well.

It is common knowledge that Dr. Jernigan grows his own botanicals as well as harvests them so they are fresh and extremely potent. His products are unique and cannot be found anywhere else. He "designed" what he felt would help chronic lyme sufferers and he is right on the money as I am proof of that. Dr. Jernigan didn't stop there but went beyond where any other doctor has gone studying natural and anthroposophical medicine in Germany and Biological Medicine at the world-renowned Paracelsus Klinic of Switzerland.

Dr. Jernigan's Borrelogen is a very potent "natural" medicine that acts as an antibiotic without the chemicals and helped me tremendously as well as his Microbojen. I must also mention his Neuro-Antitox Formulas because they cleared up my brain fog from the overload of ammonia that the lyme spirochetes cause as well as the horrible pain I suffered in my legs and other joints.

Today I no longer take his "natural" antibiotics since I am totally better. Thanks to Dr. Jernigan's knowledge of detoxing (which I believe even healthy people should do), I detox everyday following Dr. Jernigan's "recipes" and follow this brilliant doctor's protocol as far as positive thinking, eating healthy, dry skin brushing, internal and external cleansing. As explained in this book, lyme disease is one complex disease and must be treated in a complex manner.

This book gives tools that one can incorporate into their daily lives which I find extremely beneficial and of course healthy.

I wonder why the average Lyme Literate Medical Doctor doesn't tell their patients about detoxing as we live in a toxic world and detoxing is part of the recovery process?Something is wrong with that picture.Dr. Jernigan's detoxing methods are just amazing and really do work as we all have toxins in our bodies.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has Chronic Lyme, as well as co-infections.Anyone who thinks that "conventional" antibiotics are the answer should start thinking "outside the box".

Thumbs up to you Dr. Jernigan!

Product Description
The first person to focus attention on Lyme disease, Polly Murray tells the harrowing story of her early efforts to identify what was making her family so sick-- and their battle with the illness over a twenty-year period.

In Lyme, Connecticut, in 1965, Polly Murray, her husband, and their four children led an almost picture-perfect life. But Polly began to be plagued by mysterious ailments, and as the rest of her family started to experience similar symptoms, she knew something was terribly wrong. When doctor after doctor failed to explain what was happening to them, Polly was forced to confront disbelief, lack of caring, and, eventually, apathy on the part of the medical establishment, all the while suffering herself. Her personal investigation into the cause of her family's illness, which became as passionate as a detective's, eventually initiated a medical investigation that led to the 1982 discovery by Dr. Willy Burgdorfer of the dangerous bacteria that causes Lyme disease. Polly tells her tale from the viewpoint of a patient who was a pioneer in the medical recognition of Lyme disease. Lyme disease remains a poorly diagnosed, controversial illness. Lyme victims and their families can take hope from Polly's courageous and inspiring story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where It All Began
Polly Murray presents an incredibly well-documented, detailed account of her family's bizarre cluster of symptoms which began in the 1970s.Her style is factual and direct.A great read for any one interested in Lyme, particularly it's origins - surfacing in and around Lyme, Connecticut in the 1970s.Once you've read this book, I highly recommend Lab 257: The Disturbing Story of the Government's Secret Germ Laboratory to complete the picture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good read
I read this a while back and it is a good read for many reasons.

First of all, as one would expect from a book about the "discovery" of a new disease, there is mystery and intrigue that makes it hard to put down.

Secondly, the book reads as a tragedy since it is about a mother, herself sick, dealing with trying to help her sick kids. Anyone that knows about Lyme Disease knows that in far too many cases this scenario is still played out due lack of awareness as well as a to the manufactured "controversy" over Lyme Disease. With dozens of studies proving that the Lyme bacteria can persist despite treatment, and tests that are acknowleged to be inaccurate, we are living in the dark ages when it comes to this disease. The sad fact is that many are in the same situation Ms Murray was in so many decades ago.

You will cry as you read Ms Murray's book.

Finally, the book is about believing yourself and making a difference. It is about trusting yourself and standing up to those who tell you are wrong. While Ms Murray is not a physician, her "clinical observations" on this disease should be require reading for anyone treating patients. Over the years many of her "hunches" have proven to be correct. I am fairly certain that with time more of these will be proven. In particular, her observaton that subsequent tick bites serve to stengthen the disease in some way (not yet understood). I believe this observation is key to understadning why Lyme became more common in the 1980's despite the fact we now know it has been around since the ealry 1900's possibly earlier.

To me, Polly Murray is a hero, becuase she did what she had to do to help herself and her family.

A fascinating book, one that I will read again.

By Polly Murray.St. Martin's Press, 321 pp., $23.95 By Ann Hirschberg Infectious disease sleuthsare supposed to be lab-coated AIDS researchers or Dustin Hoffman types in "hot zone" suits as seen in "Outbreak."A genteel, New England landscape painter and mother of four does not fit the picture.Yet this medical pioneer uncovered Lyme disease, the fastest growing infectious disease next to AIDS and the number one vector-borne disease in our country. The "Widening Circle" in Polly Murray's title refers not only to the expanding tell-tale rash which is the sure sign of Lyme disease, but to the research that has had to reach further and further to find the answers to this insidious tick-borne scourge. The "Circle" also encompasses the incredible numbers of medical professionals to whom Lyme disease sufferers are sent by uninformed doctors who can't or won't try to treat them. After an incredible range of symptoms and many hospital stays for pain and procedures for the whole Murray family, Polly was told the illness was "all in her head."Her doctor became furious when she approached the health department with her findings that not only her family, but a large cluster ofpeople in her Lyme, Connecticut area were afflicted. He accused her of"stirring up trouble." Murray's intelligence and persistence led her to more research and finally to Yale University in 1975 where her findings were considered researchable by the doctors there. "They were spirited, like archaeologists who'd unearthed an intriguing artifact, some bit of pottery that promises even greater riches will surface with just a few more turns of the spade. "I certainly shared their enthusiasm. On the other hand, I'd been "in the field" for a while, and I knew it wasn't going to be easy to figure everything out so fast.Whatever this illness was, it was complicated, in that it involved so many systems of the body, and my instincts told me it was going to elude definition for some time to come." Twenty years later, the search should have come to a happy ending with the advance of medical technology and millions in grants for research. The definitive test for Lyme disease and the "magic bullet" treatment should have been discovered. Sadly, there is still no conclusive, reliable test for Lyme disease.Grants are sparse and the medical archeological "spades" are turning slowly. It is known that early treatment with antibiotics can arrest the disease.Left untreated, patients face the horrific sequalae Murray and her family still endure. Though the disease hasbeen reported in all 50 states, most doctors are not well informed and many are still saying," You can't have that in Ohio" and "There has never been a case reported here." The Ohio Department of Health Vector-borne Disease Unit figures stand at close to 500 reported cases. Though many doctors are not reporting cases (too much paperwork), the Centers for Disease Control case numbers showed a 58% increase in the U.S. in 1994. Polly Murray's measured journey through this painful odyssey continues. Her tenacity andreasoned clarity shine through her writing.Along the way, you get to know her wonderful family, two of whom became doctors: a heroic accomplishment, all things considered.Murray continues the search for answers and has become not just a symbol, but a dedicated educator. She addresses medical professionals and researchers, including an appearance at Case Western Reserve Medical School in Cleveland, where one son was a student in 1989. "The Widening Circle" goes beyond a tale of medical sleuthing.Murray knows the patient's struggle with Lyme disease and the parent's anguish. This book has much well researched and first-hand information for physicians and patients. She examines the need for education, collaboration, and respect, and explains why these are required not only of researchers, but of physicians treating Lyme disease patients in order to deal with this puzzling affliction. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars All Talk , No Action
There is a immense gap between Dr. Hoffman's knowledge of Lyme Disease and what he puts into practice.Granted, it was 1987, but I went to him as my first integrative medicine doc with high hopes and with all the symptoms of Lyme as well. (Alhtough I had never heard of the disease.) I lived in CT, and my main symptoms were awful burning painful knees and brain fog as I explained when I could talk between my waterfall of tears. He treated the knee symptoms with acupunture (although that DID take the pain away temporarily only to have to have surgery later) and TOTALLY ignored that fact that I was crying hysterically on his table. Never addressed it. Acted like it wasn't happening. Seemed to have an assembly line of regular tests I should take instead of really talking to me about what might be going on. Wasn't personal at all. Was a far cry from the compassionate sounding doc he had presented himself in the local NYC media. Fast forward to 20 years later. My children and I all have Lyme. Oh the difference it would have made in our lives if he had only stopped to look at me as a person rather than another series of tests to bill. Those with Lyme KNOW when a doc is compassionate and when one has simply figured out how to benefit from insurance reimbursement. I wouldn't put my faith in a book of a doctor who doesn't know how to walk the talk.

This book is a rare find as it discusses supplements helpful for patients with Lyme Disease. The only downside is that it was written in 1994, and I wish the author would write an update. ... Read more

The book also serves as an information resource for therapists and doctors interested in better treatment options for (chronic) Lyme disease. Lyme disease, or borreliosis, is caused by Gram negative spirochetal bacteria from the genus Borrelia, which has at least 37 known species, 12 of which are Lyme related, and an unknown number of genomic strains. Borrelia species known to cause Lyme disease are collectively known as Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. Borrelia are microaerophillic and slow-growing-the primary reason for the long delays when diagnosing Lyme disease-and have been found to have greater strain diversity than previously estimated. The strains differ in clinical symptoms and/or presentation as well as geographic distribution. ... Read more
