Book Description

When neurobiologist Elizabeth M. Adler was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, she learned everything she could about the disease, both to cope with the emotional stress of being diagnosed and to make sure she made the best possible decisions for her treatment. In Living with Lymphoma, she combines her knowledge of lymphoma -- both scientific and personal -- with the desire to help other patients come to grips with this complex, and often baffling, disease.

Adler thoroughly explains the disease, describing the many different kinds of Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, the wide range of symptoms, and the various treatment options available. Convinced that understanding lymphoma's biological basis will help patients make better treatment decisions, Adler explains basic cell biology and how the immune system functions. Readers will gain sufficient background to understand and evaluate medical literature, and to ask their physicians questions specific to their own needs.

In the introduction, Dr. Michael R. Bishop of the National Institutes of Health provides a physician's perspective on the delicate nature of doctor-patient relationships in the context of a life-threatening disease -- especially the importance of patient education and open communication in making decisions about treatment options and quality of life.

Drawing on her scientific expertise and personal journey -- as well as her empathy, passion, and humor -- Adler has created a valuable guide for people with lymphoma and the people caring for them.

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a Dr or a Scientist
I was hoping for a book that would give us more practicial information-as the title of the book, "Living with Lymphoma" implies I found most of it very difficult to understand and hard to read. In short the book is too technical for our needs. We just wanted to know, "What does this mean for us,' and " How can we best deal with the my husband's diagnosis of Lymphoma"? I was looking for something practically helpful and encouraging. If that's what you are looking forward this is not the book for you. However, if you'd like to know about T Cells, B Cells and how the cells connect, etc in a very technical manner, this might be the book for you.

One big flaw is that the author, who was diagnosed with cancer again does not talk about the value of a solid support system. In these past weeks since my husband's diagnosis I don't know what we would have done withoutthose who have gathered around us to support and pray for us,which helps us to be and to stay positive. If you are looking at this book because of a recent diagnosis I pray as you read this review God's presence and comfort will lead you to Him. Find a book that gives you hope you don't have to dig for in a way that comforts you and gives you practical advice about what to do and how to do it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lymphoma Survivor
This is the first book I read after being diagnosed with Lymphoma and still my favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
This book is a terrific idea for individuals recently diagnosed with Lymphoma. It provides plenty of very useful and direct information that can help cancer patients make vital life-changing decisions. There is also a very useful glossary and index in the back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful!
This book was purchased as I was undergoing my own diagnostic procedures after MRI/CT scans showed probable non-hodgkins lymphoma.I appreciated the author's first-person perspective on her experiences, which helped to normalize some of my own. The book offers good, basic descriptions of many of the different lymphomas (lymphomi?) possible, and thoroughly describes the possible treatment options.I found her explanations of chemotherapy types very helpful, making the whole topic less daunting and scary. The chapters that included cell biology, immune system, & genetic basis for lymphoma were tough to read through--but I found these gave great background for understanding what my oncologist is thinking, where he is going with his recommendations, and makes me a more involved patient. This has really helped me to cope with these first weeks/months of my disease, thank you Ms. Adler!

4-0 out of 5 stars Truly informative
Although there are a lot of technical/medical terms, I really enjoyed reading this book.I only wish it was available when I was diagnosed 5 years ago.The book helped explain some terms clearer than my doctors did, or maybe it was because I didn't have to try to remember everything, I could always go back and re-read a chapter or paragraph.I only hope my original treatment was sufficient to "cure" me and I won't need this information again in the future, but it is nice to know it is there and availble to me. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Book to Get You Started
100 Q&A books tend to answer, well, 100 questions.Haing read the book I believe it is a good introduction to lymphoma from a new patient, family member, or loved one.Information is written very clearly and you do not have to wade through ten chapters to find a specific nuggent of information.

The format does have the limitation that each subject mentioned is not explored in-depth compared to some of the other books in the same class. While very good for an introduction, if a patient is down into treatment or trying to decide on a specific treatment among choices, you'll want to look at another text.

But if one of my "family & friends" wanted to learn just a bit more after hearing I was diagnosed (if diagnosed today) I'd recommend this book. For my caregiver, I'd steer them towards more complete texts like Living with Lymphoma or maybe even the more medically oriented books Hodgkin's Disease or The Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas both by Mauch et al. ... Book Description
Prior to publication of this resource guide, no book on the market targeted the non-Hodgkin's lymphoma survivor's need for understandable information. While there are medical texts on the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas as well as inspirational first-person accounts from survivors of related cancers suchas leukemia, between these two sources of information existed a considerable information gap.In straightforward language and in a format that anticipates the reader's questions, this book addresses diagnosis and its emotional tumult, findinga good oncologist, the theories and practical aspects of treatment, characteristics of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, side effects and long-term effects of treatment, medical tests and procedures, and prognoses. Other topics of interest examined are coping with hospitalization, stressand its effects on the immune system, sexuality and fertility after treatment, how to interact successfully with medical personnel, and getting support from family, friends, employers and the broader community. The end of successful treatment and its sometimes surprising effects on one's emotions are covered in a separate chapter, as is the experience of relapse and how to select second-line treatment to regain remission. Clinical trials of promising new therapies grounded in Western medicine are covered in depth. The theories and experiences of marrow transplantation and stem cell support are surveyed. Two frank chapters on recordkeeping, finances, insurance, employment issues, traveling for care, and finding free treatment are included. Throughout the text and in several appendices, the reader is referred to other books, Web sites, and organizations that can provide more detail on a given topic. This book is intended for both newly diagnosed and long-term survivors of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, their caregivers and loved ones, and for medical personnel who interact with survivors of the non-Hodgkin's lymphomas. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars What a disappointment!
Do not buy this book.It is written in a cold, uncaring manner, completely inappropriate for anyone touched by the disease.Sure it contains facts, but nothing else.It gives a depressing, negative portrayal of the disease. You'd be better off reading nothing at all.On the other hand, "Living With Lymphoma: A Patient's Guide" is the best resource out there. It is truly a must-have.Sorry I wasted my money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Very Helpful
I bought this book hoping to learn more about a disease I was diagnosed with, but it was written from a medical doctors point of view and was not very good reading for someone who wanted and needed hope than than something else.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read For The Newly Diagnosed
When I was diagnosed with NH Lymphoma in October 2005, I promptly bought this book. What a lifesaver! This book covers everything a newly diagnosed patient could want. From initial diagnosis, this book takes the patient through all of the different kinds of Non Hodgkins Lymphomas. It tells the patient in detail the kinds of tests that your doctor will most likely order and even give you information on how painful the tests will be. Then it goes into detail on all of the different types of chemotherapy you might undergo as well as radiation therapy, surgeries and biopsies. It takes a tremendous amount of the fear away that a patient has. When I started chemotherapy, the book was right there at my side answering every question that I had. If I had a strange reaction, I reached for the book and sure enough, there was an explanation.

Remember, forewarned is forearmed! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is touched by Non Hodgkin's Lymphoma whether it is a patient or a caregiver.

5-0 out of 5 stars For every NHL Patient and Caregiver
This book can be recommended to anyone whose life has been changed forever by a diagnosis of NHL. If one is filled with trepidation, not wanting to read the cold, hard facts, he/she can be reassured that reading thisparticular book will only help one understand and cope with the disease, not scare them to death.

Had it been available when I was firstdiagnosed, I would have found in one place all the information it took meover two years to gather on my own. It sits by my computer, as necessary asmy dictionary for reference. Thank you, Lorraine Johnston, for writingthis!

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!
This is a wonderful, must-have book for any NHL patient. It reads like almost like novel, giving accurate, easy to understand information.I especially like the quotes and antecdotes from the patients themselves;people who have been through it, who "get it"...in their ownwords.A fantastic resource. ... Book Description
Skin lymphomas are relatively rare. They may arise in the skin itself and as a by-product of HIV infection, or may arise elsewhere as a result of Hodgkin's disease, B cell lymphomas or leukaemia. Whatever the cause, they can easily be overlooked as psoriasis or dermatitis.

Diagnosis of skin lymphoma is difficult and making the wrong diagnosis can prove fatal. Consequently, those in training in dermatology and pathology need to have a good understanding of the clinical presentations and the pathological correlates of this challenging disease.

An Illustrated Guide to Skin Lymphoma is a beautiful full-colour illustrated text and atlas that combines pathology with clinical features and treatment. This second edition includes the latest classification systems for cutaneous lymphomas as well as brand new chapters and an expanded section on treatment. ... Read more

Detailed information on lymphomas of the skin is extremely rare.Actual diagnosis is very hard as patients go from doctor to doctor. This book, while aimed a bit more towards professionals, is still is a wealth of information for the patient or loved one who looks for information on cutaneous/skin lymphomas when it is not obtainable elsewhere.

Book Description
The first edition of this book established itself as the standard reference on Non-Hodgkin's Lymphomas--a group of blood malignancies usually associated with children and now on the increase in the West. The success of the first edition was rooted in the seamless synthesis of the molecular biology of this type of cancer and its clinical management. In this second, considerably expanded edition approximately two-thirds of the text and illustrations are new, and the remaining third has been extensively revised, areas of controversy being accorded special consideration. The contributors have significantly increased the clinical emphasis of the volume. Detailed information is provided on the recently defined subtypes of lymphoma which were mentioned only briefly in the first edition. The text now offers a comprehensive account of the neoplastic diseases of the cells of the immune system--lymphocytes and their precursors--and covers every aspect of these conditions, including epidemiology, pathogenesis, pathology, molecular and clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment. A team of recognized world authorities, with the editor and 58 of the contributors based in the U.S., approach the Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas from the standpoint of individual diseases. Biological and clinical aspects are given equal attention, and it is this comprehensive approach that distinguishes this text from other competitors in the field. ... Read more

Book Description

The book covers the epidemiology, pathology, molecular biology, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas in children and adolescents. It is a combined effort of investigators who are leaders in the field of childhood lymphomas. Introductory chapters on Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphomas in children provide a concise historical overview. All chapters have a standalone structure and those regarding the individual subtypes of lymphomas provide up-to-date results of recent clinical trials and practical guidelines for work-up and treatment. The pathology chapters are comprehensive and include excellent photographs as well as detailed review of the scientific advances pertaining to the molecular pathogenesis of each type of malignant lymphoma seen in childhood. There is also a concise chapter on post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease and lymphomas associated with congenital and acquired immunodeficiency states. The book is at the level of subspecialists in pediatric hematology and oncology, radiation oncology, pediatric surgery and hematopathology.
