5-0 out of 5 stars The Macular Degeneration Handbook
Buy it!My Mother suffers from Macular Degeneration and I have been to several Doctor's with her.Vitamins and circulation are the keys to preventing build up in the retina.I think the book is easy to read and very has helpful information on the drugs that cause eye damage.I am buying it for my siblings for Christmas.Nothing is more precious than your eyesite. We need to research every avenue to prevent this horrible condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This is a good book if you are in to natural heaing.I was actually doing research on Macular Degeneration for my Dad and picked this one up.To be honest though, had I been in a bookstore actually glancing through it, I probably would not have purchased it.Nothing bad about it, but just not worth the money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Macular Degeneration Discussion Inadequate
Remarkably this book has only one chapter on macular degeneration.Other eye diseases are discussed in chapters that follow.Useful descriptions of macular degeneration research or ways to achieve living independence arelacking.Heavy emphasis is placed upon nutrition therapy.I found otherbooks to be of more value in understanding the role of nutrition strategiesin preserving sight and practical ways to follow them in daily living. Thisbook alone will not fulfill most needs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Down to earth and extremely helpful...
Provides concrete advice for those who have researched "fix-it" methods and found them wanting.Definitely for those who are interested in natural means to retard degeneration of remaining vision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers a natural alternative to losing vision!
My eye doctor told me I suffered from macular degeneration and I would gradually lose a good deal of my eye sight. He said there is no treatment for the condition that he was aware of.This book offers a naturalalternative to losing vision. The book isbased on fairly substantialresearch. The book gives you a detailed program of proper food andnutritional supplements that have been successful in halting theprogression of this problem and even reversing its degenerative eye-sightrobbing effects.I've started the program. While it's too early to reportimprovement at least I now have hope of improving my condition. The bookis written for the lay person and is very easy to read yet packed withinformation. ... Book Description

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a progressive disease of the retina that develops when the light-sensing cells in the central area of vision (the macula) stop working and eventually die. Thought to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors, the disease is the leading cause of blindness in people over 50. In 1995, Dan Roberts retired from teaching to help others who also suffered from macular degeneration. Roberts has established support networks for AMD patients and provided free presentations about vision impairment at schools, community organizations, and support groups across the country.

The First Year: Age-Related Macular Degeneration is an essential resource for those who want to be an informed, active participant in the management of their condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book for someone just diagnosed!
This book is a wonderful addition to someone's library when they have been diagnosed with Macular Degeneration.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for its narrow focus.
If you are a person who has just been diagnosed with age related macular degeneration, you will find this a useful book. I returned it as it was not what I was looking for: a simple book to encourage my 83 year old mother who has pretty good vision that is not deteriorating. The book is aimed at people more affected with this condition than she is. She may need it later down the road, but hopefully not!

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides weapons for your battle
There is life after macular degeneration and Dan Roberts suggests practical ways to cope with reduced vision. He's already been there & done that himself and shares what worked for him. Even if you've already acquired some low vision aids, had your mobility training, but still have enough vision to manage OK, this book has suggestions to offer for problems we don't think about until that first morning when we wake up without useful central vision. In crisis, some people just freeze. Others, like Dan and the people who attend the informative national internet seminar he leads each month, are working toward what he calls "copability". He lays out an extensive toolkit of ideas for coping, much of it standard for anyone who has already had to adapt to low or no vision, but information that's really hard to find all in one place if you're new to the idea of living as well as possible with macular degeneration. This book is a fast read with good clear print. It gets right to the point and quits when it's done. Well worth the price and the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear, concise guide on Macular Degeneration
The book is written for a lay person in simple, but complete descriptions of the process of Macular Degeneration. It is geared to the newly diagnosed person and efficiently answers all the possible questions that arise. After reading this book, I felt completely prepared to deal with my macular degeneration in a positive, realistic manner."Must read" for a newly diagnosed patient, or someone who is close to someone with macular degeneration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for people with AMD
When your doctor tells you that you have age-related macular degeneration, your reaction is likely to be shock and disbelief, followed quickly by anger and depression. You need to arm yourself with information - and fast. This wonderful book can hold your hand through that process and improve your outlook tremendously.Knowledge is power and "The First Year" gives it to you in manageable and understandable bites.Clearly written by a man who knows what it's like, this book will make a difference to patients and to their families.I highly recommend it. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Living Well With Macular Degeneration by Rosenthal et al.
The authors explain how to manage macular degeneration.
This can be done nutritionally by increasing beta carotene and
zinc which tends to deplete with advanced age. The authors
explain the benefits of increasing the intake of fruits and
dark green vegetables. We are asked to reduce or eliminate
smoking , as well as excess dietary fats. The authors
mention a number of recent scientific modalities to stabilize
vision. The PDT or photodynamic therapy is presented as a
hopeful protocol which utilizes light frequencies in order
to deal with stabilizing vision. The book is an excellent
reference for health buffs desiring to improve or stabilize
eyesight in the middle years or in anticipation of problems
which may develop in older age patients. ... Read more

Book Description
James Folk, MD and Mark Wilkinson, OD are professors at the University of Iowa. They are experts in the field of macular degeneration, and they are not being paid by anyone to recommend anything. They treat patients with age-related macular degeneration almost every day, perform research that explores the causes of AMD, attend scientific meetings, participate in treatment trials, and promise to tell you the straight scoop. They will tell you what scientists and doctors all over the world know about this disease, and, just as importantly, what they don't know. The first three chapters describe AMD along with the latest science which yields clues to what causes it. You need to understand the disease in order to fight it. The last six chapters tell how you can fight back to save your vision. They will talk about changing your lifestyle, eating the right foods, and taking multivitamins with zinc along with other medications which may reduce the risk of vision loss. They will discuss the latest treatments for the wet form of AMD, including new ones that have not yet been approved but show promise. They will also talk about how to maximize your remaining vision and live as full a life as possible. You can fight back to save your sight. Drs. Folk and Wilkinson will tell you how.Endorsements"The field of age-related macular degeneration is exploding with new research and treatments. It is impossible for patients, or even eye doctors, to keep up on the latest findings and treatments. Drs. Folk and Wilkinson are experts in this field and have the exceptional ability to communicate difficult information in a simple, straightforward style. This is a great book on AMD for the patient and eye care provider and I highly recommend it." - Edwin Stone, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Ophthalmology, Howard Hughes Medical Investigator, University of Iowa"Even though I've had macular degeneration for more than ten years, your book taught me a lot of new information. It's very easy to read and understand. I liked the glossary because I can look things up and get my questions answered quickly. I thought the video was excellent to actually see what patients like me go through. I think everyone who has this disease, (and their families and doctor), would benefit from this book. Thank you for sending it to me."-RM, a retired teacher and patient with age-related macular degeneration"I'm a busy vitreoretinal specialist and see many patients with age-related macular degeneration. This book presented the latest on research, medical and surgical treatment, and low vision. It also explained where the research and treatment was going in the coming five years and how to keep up-to-date with the new findings. 5-0 out of 5 stars for my mother
Great book!I am a general ophthalmologist and read this book and found it very helpful in my understanding of the various treatments and vitamin therapies for macular degeneration.I then gave a copy to my mother who has severe macular degeneration. She loved the book and found it very useful reading it before her last retina evaluation.I applaud Dr Folk and Wilkinson for their work on this great and hopeful guide for patients with this frustrating disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important information, easy to read
The authors of this book are very knowledgeable on the subject but they have managed to write a book that is not over my head.It has some important information for all ages on how to prolong the life of your eyes.I would recommend this book, not only for those who are already at risk for age related vision loss, but for parents who want to teach thier children good habits now so they will be able to see as clearly, and for as long, as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for people who fear going blind from AMD
This book is written for the person who is afraid he or she might have age-related macular degeneration (AMD), for people who already have AMD, and for family and friends of AMD patients. The authors are an ophthalmologist and an optometrist, giving the book points of reference from two similar but distinct disciplines. Dr. Folk covers the mechanisms of AMD and medical treatment while Dr. Wilkinson covers topics about making the best of the vision you have.
The illustrations are clear and help with the understanding of this complex topic. The tone is conversational, making it easily read but never condescending. The type is large enough with lines far enough apart to be easily read by people whose vision is not optimal but is not as large as a large-print text.
I recommend this to any person who might be faced with AMD and has been told they can't do anything about it. Physicians, particularly those who see older patients, may also want to consider using this book as a waiting room book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Patient Education
I'm extremely impressed by this book. All patient education should strive to be this clear, readable, respectful, and comprehensive. It is written with understanding of and sympathy for the experience of coping with a potentially life-changing condition -- and by that I don't mean simply that the tone is warm and encouraging (although it is), but that the book is full of practical information that answers the kinds of questions that patients are likely to ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've recently been diagnosed with ARMD, read this book!
A few years ago my wife had a blood vessel in her retina burst causing permanent partial vision loss in one eye.(She complained of "wavy vision" the day before she was to go to Europe on vacation - she cancelled the trip.) Since then we have had an Amsler grid on our refrigerator door, and she has learned to cope with the `missing spot' in her field of vision....Two weeks ago she noticed - while watching the Bloomberg channel - that she could not read a good bit of what was on the screen. This time the doctor found another leakage into the retina (not involving red blood cells); her vision returned to what it was before in a few days. The doctor `put dye into her' to `check her eyes out.' - BUT this time the doctor told her that she has early dry ARMD. ----- I realized that we didn't understand very much of what we were being told ...so I bought this book and spent the last two days reading it cover to cover...This is really an EXCELLENT summary.I wish we had had it before my wife's latest problem, because I would have been able to ask more intelligent questions. We will on the next checkup! This deceptively small book holds more information than I thought could be packed into a 170-page volume in large type.Dr. Robert D'Amato's explanations are not only complete, but also clear.(I finished reading it before I noticed that the Macular Degeneration Foundation has endorsed it!).I have a bent for details and proofs, for the exact pro's and con's of different `treatments.'I learned that my wife's emotional reaction to her diagnosis (she was initially convinced that she `was going blind') was only partially justified.Dr. D'Amato shows that this outcome is highly improbable; most people show a gradual loss, if any at all, over a period of years.I learned, however, that it is essential to keep an eye on (unintended humor there) dry ARMD so that progression into wet ARMD can be detected, and then treated. He details both current and prospective treatments for wet ARMD. ----"Macular Degeneration" contains a very helpful glossary, and the book is filled with specific sources - so one can pursue additional research on this affliction!----- I was NOT particularly impressed by Joan Snyder's contribution to this volume, despite the fact that she is obviously sincere.`Alternative medicine' seems to be all the rage now, but I think it lacks the rigor of true science.Mrs. Snyder's very complete listing of alternative approaches seemed to me merely a catalog of `ways to kid yourself.'[I was waiting for her to suggest prayer, pilgrimages, or divine healing -- which she never did, thank goodness!]Dr. D'Amato's kind words about his co-author did not hide his skepticism about her sympathy for `alternative medicine'. He is a more patient man than I am!Since the `alternative medicine' section occupied a relatively small part of the volume (the preface and Chapter 8) I don't feel that Mrs. Synder's contribution significantly detracted from the book's worth -in fact, for those like me who are hard-headed empiricists, the descriptions of `alternative approaches' told me: don't waste time on this approach!---- Hats off to the publisher: Note that the typeface is quite large which opens this valuable work to those who need it the most -- ARMD sufferers with significant vision loss!I strongly feel everyone recently diagnosed with ARMD should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Focuses on understanding of this sight-robbing condition
The condition described here is age-related but has grown significantly in recent years as the population ages: Macular Degeneration provides an analysis of the disease, its progression and its symptoms. From the latest medical treatments to options for alternatives, Macular Degeneration focuses on understanding all aspects of the sight-robbing condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars First book that answered my questions!
I have been trying to find info on new treatments for macular degeneration. What is the difference between photodynamic therapy (PDT/Visudyne) versus transpupillary thermotherapy? This book covered all the latest treaments, even ones in experimental stages. Amazingly, the book is also comprehensive in itsdiscussion of diet and alternative therapies. As well, it explained all the nuts and bolts of the disease process. I found it exciting to read and quite inspiring. It is a "must read" if you have macular degeneration. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars biblberry info
This book has a valuable amount of information regarding the health benefits of bilberry extract. It explains the way bilberry helps diabetic retinopathy.I am hoping this information will also help a family member with macular degeneration. This small easy to read book tells dosage recommendations also.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere. This pub is awful.
Bilberry & Lutein is replete with words and phrases like "ischaemia reperfusion injury", "artiolar tone", and "vasomotion".But mostly they are not anywhere defined.Evidently the reader is supposed to dope out their meaning from context.Lotsa luck.

Again, there are sentences like, "Italian researchers also showed that bilberry anthocyanosides was beneficial against on ischaemia reperfusion injury...."
And there are facts like, "Corn is the vegetable with the highest quantity of lutein...".(According to the USDA database, spinach, kale, and various other kinds of greens contain many times as much lutein per unit weight as corn.)

I read a lot of health literature.I found Lutein & Bilberry exceedingly difficult to puzzle out, and to the extent I managed to do so, rather unreliable. It reads as though written by someone whose first language is not English, whose knowledge of the subject matter going in was zero, and whose "research" consisted of reading abstracts of journal articles and copying out sentences from them not too carefully.I find the pamphlet (at 28 pages of large-print text, it certainly is not a book) so bad that I have strong doubts about the genuineness of the three enthusiastic reviews that are standing as I write this one.Bilberry and lutein are undoubtedly good for you, but if you want the details, look elsewhere.

At the end of the pamphlet is a full-page, 30-item, list of titles (including Bilberry & Lutein), all but two by Beth Ley, offered for sale by BL Publications. For me, this author's name on any publication is sufficient reason to reject it without further consideration.

For info on the significance of Ms. Ley's "Ph. D.", see:

5-0 out of 5 stars Shortand complete!
This book is short, yet it covers all the essential information you need regarding Bilberry and Lutein for healthy eyes.
Ley covers it all in easy to understand language. A fast read for busy readers who don't want to be short-changed on information. The title of this book is a perfect summary of its contents.

5-0 out of 5 stars PROTECTING OUR EYES!
This is aneasy to read guide to learning about our eyes and how to safeguard our vision. This compact thirty-ninepage phamplet offers insight into Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Night Blindness,"Snow" Blindness, Antioxidants, Bilberry, Lutein, and nuturing properties contained in some foods.

Author Beth M. Ley, Ph.D,has given us the first step, the basics,in helping us to help ourselves. I especially liked the chapter on foods.Spinach, collard greens, leeks, peas, kiwi fruit, zucchini, corn, grapes, kale, squash, broccoli.I knew about carrots but not the other veggies and fruits.

Author Ley includes results ofstudies documenting those at risk for eye damage, and emphasizes that our eyes are our most delicate and sensitive organs. Protect them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the Market regarding Macular Degeneration.
Here's a book with real substance written by a doctor who has M.D.There are too many books on the marketthat appear to be written by doctors who are looking over someones shoulderin an attempt to write authoritively onthe subject. I was very impressed by the dept of knowledge of this doctor who writes with true in depth investigative knowledge, he truly understands because he has the problem.A lot of good advice regarding diet which is of major importance, and life style, (Smoking), etc.Careful reading will show at least how to stop the progression and he also tells what kind of research is being done to find , if not a cure, at leastpossible major help.I'll buy anything this guy writes !

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book yet!
This book on macular degeneration is by far the best one published to date. There are numerous other publications available by other doctors that don't come close to the quality and depth of information contained in thisbook. I even gave a copy to my eye doctor who was not aware of it'savailability.I must add that this doctor really speaks from personalexperience with Macular Degeneration and it shows in the quality andquantity of great information.I thank God for this mans bookand highlyrecommend it to anyone who has MD or a friend or relative with theproblem.Sincere thanks,Lee CarlsonSpring Hill, Fl

5-0 out of 5 stars Best resource on Macular Degeneration
I have a parent with macular degeneration and this book gave my father and our family new hope and inspiration. Particularly compelling was the fact that the author himself suffers from this affliction. The information provided was extremely useful and written in an informal, personal andnon-technical manner. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has orknows someone with macular degeneration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A unique, invaluable contribution to ocular medicine.
In Healing The Eye The Natural Way: Alternative Medicine And MacularDegeneration, homeopath and board certified ophthalmologist Dr. EdwardKondrot offers readers a twelve-step guide to improving their visionthrough vitamin and nutritional therapy, homeopathy, micro-currentstimulation, and chelation therapy. Healing The Eye The Natural Way is aunique and invaluable contribution to the growing library of alternativemedicine in general, and vision related medical issues in particular.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic New Hope for Those with Macular Degeneration
I was absolutely delighted to read Dr. Kondrot's book Healing the Eye the Natural Way.I am a Family Physician, a Homeopathic Doctor, and I have a family history of macular degeneration. This book helps me on all three ofthose levels. This book presents a sensible and rational,multi-disciplinary, holistic approach to eye health and particularly tomacular degenaration. We need more information like that found in thisbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Treatments for Macular Degeneration
Given that it is estimated that 13 million Americans are to suffer from Age-Related Macular Degeneration, it is time that someone from the field of medicine step forward into the realm of natural medicine and give us hope.In this book, Dr. Kondrot introduces an alternative approach to help healmacular degeneration at a time that conventional medicine does not havemuch to offer patients with this diagnosis.Dr. Kondrot has introduced hisapproach in three main parts in the book.In the first section he teachesthe value of a healthy diet, balanced exercise, and stress management.Inthe 2nd section, he recommends additional nutritional and eye specificherbal supplements to support circulatory and nervous system. And finallyin the 3rd section, three revolutionary techniques are introduced:classical homeopathy, chelation therapy and micro-current stimulation. Most of us have herad of chelation therapy in relation to treating heavymetal toxicity or cardiovascular disorders. The idea of chelation therapyas a treatment for macular degeneration will strike most readers as quitenovel.Likewise, many will not have heard of Microcurrent Stimulation, anadaption of TENS unit used for pain management, to stimulate eyecirculation. In classical homeopathy, a correct constitutional remedy isuseful in healing the person as a whole and can bring miraculous outcomewhen combined with the rest of the mentioned therapies.Patienttestimonials are especially compelling. Readers will find this book easyto read because of its' simple language, slightly oversized font and roomypage layout. In addition the upbeat, and friendly tone providesencouragement and support for the readers in the healing process. Resources are helpful to acquire the mentioned products. It is wonderfulto know that the material in this book is compiled from years of work anddedication of a respected specialist who has dared to go the distance inthis field.

2-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of generality
I purchased this book for a family member who is in the early stages of glaucoma, hoping that holistic approaches might reduce the probability of surgery later on. While the book does provide some useful informationregarding the importance of selenium, chromium and lutein in themaintenance of eye health, its extremely general information on most topicsis almost useless. For example, Kondrot states that it is important tominimize stress and avoid processed foods, both factors in decreasing thebody's retention of toxic compounds. However, he also seems to advocateavoidance of large quantities of fluids. This is contrary to his ownhypothesis that it is important to clear the body of toxins, and ignoresthe fact that diabetics(who are a large proportion of his targetaudience)cannot safely do this for an extended period of time! On thesubject of stress relief, his advice is also very general, although notdangerous in its execution. In short, the only truly useful informationprovided in the book comes in the area of dietary adjustment and the use ofmineral supplements. Note:This book would probably be much more useful toindividuals with eye disorders who are not afflicted with diabetes. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not very well researched !
The title incluudes the words"reversing " and preventingmacular degeneration and headlines "overcoming visionloss", but inside says macular degeneration is not reversable.I beg to differ as there is nomention of the benefits of chelation therapy for the eyes. There is muchto be said for chelation therapy as a treatment ,as the build-up ofdeposits behind the macula is one of the most direct causes of maculardegeneration. Theonly known way to remove the deposits and clear out thecirculatory system at the backof the eye is CHELATION THERAPY. How can onepresent himself as an "expert" withouthaving any mention of thstypeof treatment? To be sure, diet, smoking and lifestyle are importantand these are well covered, but in my opinion, the doctor needs to do somemore homework.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Book's Title is Misleading
When I saw the title "See Again" and read the two onling customer reviews of this book I became very excited that at last there was a way to help my 85 year old mother with macular degeneration see again. But, this book is not about reversing macular degeneration for those whohave it now, as it is billed. It presents the view that maculardegeneration can be prevented through nutrition, exercise and the use ofprotective eyeware.A great many pages are devoted to discussingvegetables, fruits, food preparation and recipes. Nowhere does the bookdemonstrated that sight will be returned through a specialized diet. Mymother and I are very disappointed that it offers no new information orhope on reversing the disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well written and easy to follow
I wish I had read this book 20 years ago so I could have prevented the vision loss which is making it hard to read and write. At least I now knowwhat to do.The four step program is easy to follow, and I have given mychildren a copy so that they can get started early on a program to preventmacular degeneration.

This book is a must if you have maculardegeneration, or if you want to prevent it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers hope for people with macular degeneration
