5-0 out of 5 stars Macular Degeneration--What now??
This is a comprehensive review of what Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD)is all about and how to deal with it and maintain a quality life. The disease is fully discussed with treatments although since 2003 there have been advances not covered in this printing. It is still an excellent resource for understanding the emotional aspects of the diagnosis and dealing with life style adaptations to fully enjoy life. Dr. Mogk's life serves as an example. Prevention is stressed for family members not yet affected with a strong focus on diet and nutrition. Practical suggestions and resources for low vision patients are covered.

The print is good sized and easy to read.

I've recommended the book to others with the diagnosis as a worthwhile read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Patient and Family Members
This is one of the most comprehensive books on macular degeneration. It is written by an eye specialist who treats macular degeneration. Dr. Mogk writes from the unique perspective as also the caregiver to her elderly father who has advanced macular degeneration.

With this family history, she is at a greater risk for developing AMD so she has included lots of practical information on prevention and diet and nutrition.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who has macular degeneration or who has a family member with AMD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for both newly diagnosed and long term
This book is clearly written, covers a lot of material and is a really nice resource for people with macular degeneration. Much of the emphasis is on patients with vision loss and the font size is large to aid in reading. However, it also offers calm advice and information to the newly diagnosed. In fact, it offered me much more useful information than did the retinal specialist. The authors avoid getting too technical and this is both a plus and a minus. That is, most readers will have little trouble understanding almost everything in the book. On the other hand, if you want more detail, more up to date medical information, and more a more critical approach, you will need to use this book as your starting point. The only other negatives that I can remember are a very non-critical description of 'alternative' medicine and a somewhat confusing description of visual rehabilitation methods.
On the whole, if you have been newly diagnosed with macular degeneration or have been facing it for a long time, this is must reading. However, this should be your first book on the subject and all are advised to expand beyond this as a reference.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful book
I used this book as one of my sources for a research paper on macular degeneration(AMD). It was my most useful and most cited source. I see it as a must read for anyone facing AMD, whether they have AMD or someone they care about has it. The writing is clear and informative. It explains the disease very well, as well as giving great information on what you can do now that you are diagnosed.

This book is an excellent reference for someone who has just learned that they have Macular Degeneration. It has a wealth of information and actual stories from people who are going through the same thing. It sure helps to reassure the patient. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Everyone interested in Macular Degeneration
As a registered nurse I found it very refreshing to hear from a medical doctor about the importance of diet and nutrition and how it impacts our general health and the health of our eyes.

Dr. Samuel explains the role of inflammation in the development of macular degeneration and what we can do to reduce chronic inflammation through eating the right fats and carbohydrates.

I recommend this book to anyone who has macular degeneration, has a family member with AMD or anyone who wants to learn more about the prevention of AMD.

This book was a very easy read. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very comforting news for sufferers of macular degeneration
Macular degeneration is a disease that doesn't just affect people in their 50s and 60s - it can strike at any time, has a hereditary component, and there's no way to predict the rate of progression. More depressingly, it robs sufferers of their central vision and there's no cure available, either through drugs or surgery.

Being diagnosed with MD feels like being told you've got terminal cancer, and Dr Solomon immediately identifies the coldness of the medical community in handling patients with this disease. He also dispels some of the myths around MD - it's relieving to hear that you will *not* go blind - and talks about how patients can restructure their lives to manage this disease. While it's undoubtedly a life-changing event, he provides great insight into what specifically will change and how sufferers can address these problems (such as having to quit driving).

However, as an early MD sufferer, the biggest challenge for me is how to halt its progression, and the book provides extremely useful advice on how to change habits and lifestyle to give yourself the best chance of preserving your eyesight for longer. Specifically:

* Quit toxin-inducing habits (drinking, smoking, coffee, etc.)
* Introduce kale, spinach, carrot and broccoli into as many meals as you can
* Start a regimented vitamin routine
* Begin a daily exercise program

Out of the sheer terror of this disease, I've immediately and permanently adopted all four of these points - and while the dead retinal cells will never regrow, it's worth taking the chance that these steps may help slow or stop any further deterioration. I'm doing my best to buy time, since I've been investigating the stem cell operation in some detail, and have the feeling that it's still 5 years away from a reliable and safe solution.

Overall, I feel this book is the authority on macular degeneration, especially given the scant information provided by opticians and doctors. Its message is simple: this is a manageable condition that has attracted feverish levels of medical research, with the potential for a cure in the future, and its progression can be decelerated. But most importantly: you won't go blind.

5-0 out of 5 stars The information your doctor didn't tell you!
This 2nd edition of Dr. Solomon's book is a very worthwhile read. The anatomy of the eye and the physiology is discussed for those who need to understand what is going on in Age Related Macular Degeneration. In addition, Dr. Solomon discusses the emotional aspect from a patient's viewpoint and as an ophthalmologist who diagnosed others for many years. The personal stories included offer emotional support and encouragement.

This book gives a relatively current update on treatment(the field is changing so rapidly that no book will be totally current), preventive and dietary recommendations and how to deal with the forthcoming loss of vision that comes with the diagnosis.

As a patient in the early stages of wet ARMD, I have asked my family to read this book to help them understand what my journey will be about. I have also recommended this book to friends with ARMD and to my phsician for a patient recommended reading list. The publisher would be wise to use a slightly bolder print in upcoming printings.

5-0 out of 5 stars it helped me
The review is short.I learned I have macular degeneration.I wanted to know everything I could about it above my conversations with my retina specialist. This book helped me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grace, release, and comfort.
My husband has AMD, and we've been fighting it (with some, but limited success) for the last few years.
Most of our effort was based on what I could learn on-line, such as at [...] and AMD Society.
But we both were fighting bravely..suspecting he would be blind within a few years,
and unwilling to burden/talk about it with each other.

The first great information given by Dr. and Jonathan Solomon:my love will not go totally blind.

Second: he will be disabled. Disabled: he can no longer drive.

Third: there are tools and sources to help him enjoy retirement.
To help US to enjoy retirement.

My hubby/love is designing better 'readers' than Lighthouse offers: cameras, screens and all...at lower cost...now that we understand the problem better.
Dr. Solomon also addresses the problem of indifferent or ignorant medical folk (technicians and opthy folk). He lived thru what we lived thru...and told us we weren't nuts to think we were being brushed off.Or ignored/denied.

If you have a family member diagnosed with AMD ...........
BUY THIS BOOK
In LARGE print.Chuckle.
And talk to each other.
Talk.
Check other sources too.........but measure them off this book.

Here's a book with real substance written by a doctor who has M.D.There are too many books on the marketthat appear to be written by doctors who are looking over someones shoulderin an attempt to write authoritively onthe subject. I was very impressed by the dept of knowledge of this doctor who writes with true in depth investigative knowledge, he truly understands because he has the problem.A lot of good advice regarding diet which is of major importance, and life style, (Smoking), etc.Careful reading will show at least how to stop the progression and he also tells what kind of research is being done to find , if not a cure, at leastpossible major help.I'll buy anything this guy writes ! ... The authors explain how to manage macular degeneration.
This can be done nutritionally by increasing beta carotene and
zinc which tends to deplete with advanced age. The authors
explain the benefits of increasing the intake of fruits and
dark green vegetables. We are asked to reduce or eliminate
smoking , as well as excess dietary fats. The authors
mention a number of recent scientific modalities to stabilize
vision. The PDT or photodynamic therapy is presented as a

to deal with stabilizing vision. The book is an excellent

Buy it!My Mother suffers from Macular Degeneration and I have been to several Doctor's with her.Vitamins and circulation are the keys to preventing build up in the retina.I think the book is easy to read and very has helpful information on the drugs that cause eye damage.I am buying it for my siblings for Christmas.Nothing is more precious than your eyesite. We need to research every avenue to prevent this horrible condition.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This is a good book if you are in to natural heaing.I was actually doing research on Macular Degeneration for my Dad and picked this one up.To be honest though, had I been in a bookstore actually glancing through it, I probably would not have purchased it.Nothing bad about it, but just not worth the money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Macular Degeneration Discussion Inadequate
Remarkably this book has only one chapter on macular degeneration.Other eye diseases are discussed in chapters that follow.Useful descriptions of macular degeneration research or ways to achieve living independence arelacking.Heavy emphasis is placed upon nutrition therapy.I found otherbooks to be of more value in understanding the role of nutrition strategiesin preserving sight and practical ways to follow them in daily living. Thisbook alone will not fulfill most needs.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simple is Correct
Author Chet Cunningham is apparently not a doctor or a health professional, but a person who has been diagnosed with macular degeneration. This is a very slim book for the money. It is written in a simple style and once the author covered the basics on what macular degeneration is and how it is treated by the medical profession, he used the rest of the book to warn against certain prescription and over the counter drugs that can cause eye damage and to recommend certain natural supplements and simple exercises for the whole body. In other words, doctors don't really know what causes macular degeneration, but it can't hurt to boost your intake of vitamins and to exercise more, since these methods probably help your general health and, who knows, they may help your eyes as well. A better subtitle for the book would have been, Simple Suggestions That Might Help Save Your Sight.

The title incluudes the words"reversing " and preventingmacular degeneration and headlines "overcoming visionloss", but inside says macular degeneration is not reversable.I beg to differ as there is nomention of the benefits of chelation therapy for the eyes. There is muchto be said for chelation therapy as a treatment ,as the build-up ofdeposits behind the macula is one of the most direct causes of maculardegeneration. Theonly known way to remove the deposits and clear out thecirculatory system at the backof the eye is CHELATION THERAPY. How can onepresent himself as an "expert" withouthaving any mention of thstypeof treatment? To be sure, diet, smoking and lifestyle are importantand these are well covered, but in my opinion, the doctor needs to do somemore homework.

When I saw the title "See Again" and read the two onling customer reviews of this book I became very excited that at last there was a way to help my 85 year old mother with macular degeneration see again. But, this book is not about reversing macular degeneration for those whohave it now, as it is billed. It presents the view that maculardegeneration can be prevented through nutrition, exercise and the use ofprotective eyeware.A great many pages are devoted to discussingvegetables, fruits, food preparation and recipes. Nowhere does the bookdemonstrated that sight will be returned through a specialized diet. Mymother and I are very disappointed that it offers no new information orhope on reversing the disease.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, well written and easy to follow
I wish I had read this book 20 years ago so I could have prevented the vision loss which is making it hard to read and write. At least I now knowwhat to do.The four step program is easy to follow, and I have given mychildren a copy so that they can get started early on a program to preventmacular degeneration.

This book is a must if you have maculardegeneration, or if you want to prevent it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Offers hope for people with macular degeneration

5-0 out of 5 stars Surpraised
I become highly surprised when I bought this book due a brother's disgnostic of ARMD. When I read it for hem I learned a bunch of things and also the disease at the begin. I confess I've never knew one word about this and for sure I started to take all care possible to avoid this for my own eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Makes sense
This book gives a broad overview of this extremely common and debilitating eye disease. The co-authors, a leading ophthalmologist and a patient with macular degeneration, present the information from both the technical point of view and the laymen's point of view. The book covers many aspects of macular degeneration, including its definition, types, diagnosis, treatments, and coping methods. The treatments section includes a comparison of alternative therapies as well as standard medical treatments. There are also chapters on possible causes of macular degeneration and potential ways to lower the risk of developing the disease. The book includes a glossary and a list of resources for further information or help.If you or someone you know is diagnosed with macular degeneration, this book will be invaluable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Patient Education
I'm extremely impressed by this book. All patient education should strive to be this clear, readable, respectful, and comprehensive. It is written with understanding of and sympathy for the experience of coping with a potentially life-changing condition -- and by that I don't mean simply that the tone is warm and encouraging (although it is), but that the book is full of practical information that answers the kinds of questions that patients are likely to ask.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you've recently been diagnosed with ARMD, read this book!
A few years ago my wife had a blood vessel in her retina burst causing permanent partial vision loss in one eye.(She complained of "wavy vision" the day before she was to go to Europe on vacation - she cancelled the trip.) Since then we have had an Amsler grid on our refrigerator door, and she has learned to cope with the `missing spot' in her field of vision....Two weeks ago she noticed - while watching the Bloomberg channel - that she could not read a good bit of what was on the screen. This time the doctor found another leakage into the retina (not involving red blood cells); her vision returned to what it was before in a few days. The doctor `put dye into her' to `check her eyes out.' - BUT this time the doctor told her that she has early dry ARMD. ----- I realized that we didn't understand very much of what we were being told ...so I bought this book and spent the last two days reading it cover to cover...This is really an EXCELLENT summary.I wish we had had it before my wife's latest problem, because I would have been able to ask more intelligent questions. We will on the next checkup! This deceptively small book holds more information than I thought could be packed into a 170-page volume in large type.Dr. Robert D'Amato's explanations are not only complete, but also clear.(I finished reading it before I noticed that the Macular Degeneration Foundation has endorsed it!).I have a bent for details and proofs, for the exact pro's and con's of different `treatments.'I learned that my wife's emotional reaction to her diagnosis (she was initially convinced that she `was going blind') was only partially justified.Dr. D'Amato shows that this outcome is highly improbable; most people show a gradual loss, if any at all, over a period of years.I learned, however, that it is essential to keep an eye on (unintended humor there) dry ARMD so that progression into wet ARMD can be detected, and then treated. He details both current and prospective treatments for wet ARMD. ----"Macular Degeneration" contains a very helpful glossary, and the book is filled with specific sources - so one can pursue additional research on this affliction!----- I was NOT particularly impressed by Joan Snyder's contribution to this volume, despite the fact that she is obviously sincere.`Alternative medicine' seems to be all the rage now, but I think it lacks the rigor of true science.Mrs. Snyder's very complete listing of alternative approaches seemed to me merely a catalog of `ways to kid yourself.'[I was waiting for her to suggest prayer, pilgrimages, or divine healing -- which she never did, thank goodness!]Dr. D'Amato's kind words about his co-author did not hide his skepticism about her sympathy for `alternative medicine'. He is a more patient man than I am!Since the `alternative medicine' section occupied a relatively small part of the volume (the preface and Chapter 8) I don't feel that Mrs. Synder's contribution significantly detracted from the book's worth -in fact, for those like me who are hard-headed empiricists, the descriptions of `alternative approaches' told me: don't waste time on this approach!---- Hats off to the publisher: Note that the typeface is quite large which opens this valuable work to those who need it the most -- ARMD sufferers with significant vision loss!I strongly feel everyone recently diagnosed with ARMD should read this book.

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Age-related Macular Degeneration," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Age-related Macular Degeneration in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Age-related Macular Degeneration when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Age-related Macular Degeneration, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
Rapid or even dramatic progress has been made in the field of AMD over recent years, leading to a constant revision of basic concepts. A wide range of fundus imaging modalities are now available, and this book explains the respective value of each technique. The information provided by OCT is presented logically by comparison with plain films, autofluorescence, fluorescein angiography, or indocyanine green angiography. Meticulous biomicroscopic examination of macular changes and the essential value of fluorescein angiography for the detection of anatomical alterations of the macula and for precise evaluation of lesions and their course by indocyanine green angiography have naturally led the author Gabriel Coscas to analyze the new data provided by OCT. ... Macular degeneration is diagnosed as either dry (non-neovascular) or wet (neovascular). Neovascular refers to growth of new blood vessels in an area, such as the macula, where they are not supposed to be. The dry form is more common than the wet, with about 85 per cent - 90 per cent patients diagnosed. The wet form of the disease usually leads to more serious vision loss. Different forms of macular degeneration may occur in younger patients. These non-age related cases may be linked to heredity, diabetes, nutritional deficits, head injury, infection, or other factors. This book presents the latest research from around the world. ... Read more
