3-0 out of 5 stars Out of Date
This book is out of date medically.Since it was published in 1998 there have been many advances in the treatment of Age Related Macular Degeneration. While nutritional support remains the only current treatment for the dry form of the disorder there are several approaches to treatment for the wet form which results in much quicker loss of vision.I have received eye injections of a chemotherapy drugevery 6 weeks for 18 months for the wet form with excellent results. The drug stops the growth of new blood vessels under the retina which is what causes much ofthe damage.Current medical treatment options give significantlymore reason to be hopeful that the wet form of the disorder can be successfully managed.New approaches are in the research and development phases. The nutritional information presented by Dr.Rose is relevant to everyone wishing to be as healthy as possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
I found "Save Your Sight" interesting and easy to read.Macular degeneration is explained in layman's terms and how diet modification may make a significant contribution in slowing or stopping the progress of this disorder.Learning I have MD in the early stages was a wake-up call.Self-management and self-determination are important to me so dietary and other positive lifestyle changes are more appealing than the possibility of invasive procedures which could do more harm than good.Whether diet, exercise, learning to relax, will alter the outcome of my MD remains to be seen (couldn't resist the pun); I think the overall health outcomes will prove the effort a good investmentof my time, energy and resources in any event.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Real Impressed
I was doing research on Macular Degeneration as my father has just been diagnosed with it.This is one of 6 books that I purchased on it.Had I been in a bookstore looking through it I probably would not have included it in my purchase. However, if you are in to Natural healing, I guess it would be a worthwhile purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential info for all Eye Doctors
I practice Nutritional Optometry (educate my patients on any and all supplements that are beneficial for their particular disease, or family history of disease). This book gives the reader an exceptional overview on the do's and dont's of nutrition as pertaining to the eye.
The information contained in this book is necessary info for all eye doctors, so they may relay the info to their patients.

1-0 out of 5 stars A misleading title providing false hope
I suffer from Macular Degeneration and bought the book, hoping to find, as the title suggests, a way to reverse the disease. There was no proven cure in the book. Plus, the book has only one chapter on MD, not the whole bookas might be construed from the title. Millions of Americans suffer from MDfor which there is no definite cure. The title is a good sales booster.People like me who have been told by numerous physicians that there is nocure, will buy the book. If you are a patient of MD, eat a lot of bilberry, antioxidants and lutein( found in leafy greens like spinach) and most ofall, pray. God made us and He only can cure; we can only try, it is He thatcan make it happen. ... Read more

FWIW, the New England Journal of Medicine just published a positive review of this book (Sharma & Wong, 355:1507-1508; October 5, 2006).I am buying it on the basis of this.

Quoting the review: "In summary, Age-Related Macular Degeneration is an important reference and a comprehensive update on the subject of age-related macular degeneration. Much of the material covering the recent evidence in support of new therapies is timely. The book is a substantial achievement that will serve ophthalmologists and vitreoretinal specialists well."

5-0 out of 5 stars Technically informative and filled with useful advice
What a boon and comfort it would be to the patient if, upon receiving a diagnosis of macular degeneration, the doctor presented a copy of this book!

I thought I knew all the handy tricks until I read Chapter 9, "Making the Home Eye Friendly." After helping my mother deal with her legal blindness for ten years, I thought I knew all the practical hints for coping with macular degeneration. Now I'm in the early stages of the disease and welcome the many new ideas I found in The Macular Degeneration Source Book. Some of my favorites are to always carry a flashlight and to put glow-in-the-dark tape on stairtreads, doorknobs--and all those flashlights.

But the book offers more than handy tips. Retinal surgeon Bert Glaser follows a logical progression starting with an explanation of what happens to the eye affected by macular degeneration, with drawings that illuminate the text. Then he describes the various types of macular degeneration. The importance of testing and getting a diagnosis from qualified doctors is emphasized. Treatments for various types of MD are discussed in an understandable style. A list of risk factors is followed by life style changes that can help reduce risk. The book does not over-promise results while offering a positive, upbeat approach throughout.

Useful features in the back of the book include a list of resources-websites, organizations, catalogs, software, and vision products-a glossary of terms, and an index.

4-0 out of 5 stars Patients and families will learn from this book.
This comprehensive book does a very nice job of explaining age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in terms that anyone can understand. Patients and their families will particularly appreciate learning the distinction between the different types of AMD and reading the thorough description of the eye examination.

Other important chapters cover a 10-step program to reduce your risks of macular degeneration, dealing with the emotional impact (an often overlooked aspect of vision loss) and ways to make your home and workplace more vision friendly. The Appendix and List of Resources are excellent.

The diagnosis of AMD can be devastating, but with information like The Macular Degeneration Source Book, patients and their families can deal with the challenge. Written by a leading macular degeneration specialist, it contains accurate medical information and lists current research.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Eye Opener
This is a great book on the topic. Glaser and Picker have great insight into this disease. Reading this book has helped me understand what my father is going through and gave us some ideas for more effective treatment.Thank you, gentlemen!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Macular Degeneration Sourcebook: A Guide for Patients
Loosing sight due to Macular Degeneration is a very frightening experience.Dr. Glaser and Lester Picker were able to provide a level of comfort in dealing with the disease. The book is complete with valuable references and resources while doing a good job of thoroughly managing expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth your Time
A close relative has recently been diagnosed with macular degeneration.I found this book very helpful in understanding the ravaging effects of macular degeneration, yet also providing solid information on ways to combat and cope with this disease. It is clearly written and easy for a layperson such as myself to understand. I'd recommend it to anyone with a similar interest. ... Read more

Macular Degeneration is a leading cause of failing sight as we age. The disease causes deterioration of the macula, the central area of the retina. While new treatments such as photodynamic therapy (PDT) and laser treatment give hope, unfortunately the condition is often not treatable. Product Description
Degeneration of the macula is the leading cause of legal blindness in people over fifty-five. The macula is used for most acute and detailed vision - reading, driving, watching television, precise work, and recognising faces. However, this weakening of central vision does not necessarily affect colour and peripheral vision. Macular degeneration generally takes place over a gradual period and at different rates in each eye. Its causes are still unclear, but there exist two main types. 'Dry' degeneration occurs when the macular tissues of the retina thin and disturb pigmentation, and 'wet' includes bleeding and scar tissue. Though macular degeneration is usually age-related, there are forms that affect younger individuals, but the reasons behind those cases are not yet known. This new book provides state-of-the-art research results on this debilitating condition. ... Read more

Our eyes are perhaps our most delicate and sensitive organs. They are at high risk for damage, especially from UV rays and other causes of free radical damage.

Cataracts afflict approximately 29% of Americans between 65 and 74 years of age.

Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of severe visual impairment in older Americans. Approximately 1.7 million have decreased vision and 100,000 are blind from the disease.

Glaucoma afflicts over 2 million and has caused blindness in 120,000 people in the United States. It is the leading cause of blindness in African-Americans.

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness for Americans under 60. Diabetics are 25 times more at risk for blindness than the generalpopulation.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO PROTECT YOUR EYES?

Bilberry and Lutein are clinically proven to help protect against, slow down the progression of and even help reverse these and other common vision disorders. Get the facts on these powerful anti-oxidant vision enhancers! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars biblberry info
This book has a valuable amount of information regarding the health benefits of bilberry extract. It explains the way bilberry helps diabetic retinopathy.I am hoping this information will also help a family member with macular degeneration. This small easy to read book tells dosage recommendations also.

1-0 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere. This pub is awful.
Bilberry & Lutein is replete with words and phrases like "ischaemia reperfusion injury", "artiolar tone", and "vasomotion".But mostly they are not anywhere defined.Evidently the reader is supposed to dope out their meaning from context.Lotsa luck.

Again, there are sentences like, "Italian researchers also showed that bilberry anthocyanosides was beneficial against on ischaemia reperfusion injury...."
And there are facts like, "Corn is the vegetable with the highest quantity of lutein...".(According to the USDA database, spinach, kale, and various other kinds of greens contain many times as much lutein per unit weight as corn.)

I read a lot of health literature.I found Lutein & Bilberry exceedingly difficult to puzzle out, and to the extent I managed to do so, rather unreliable. It reads as though written by someone whose first language is not English, whose knowledge of the subject matter going in was zero, and whose "research" consisted of reading abstracts of journal articles and copying out sentences from them not too carefully.I find the pamphlet (at 28 pages of large-print text, it certainly is not a book) so bad that I have strong doubts about the genuineness of the three enthusiastic reviews that are standing as I write this one.Bilberry and lutein are undoubtedly good for you, but if you want the details, look elsewhere.

At the end of the pamphlet is a full-page, 30-item, list of titles (including Bilberry & Lutein), all but two by Beth Ley, offered for sale by BL Publications. For me, this author's name on any publication is sufficient reason to reject it without further consideration.

For info on the significance of Ms. Ley's "Ph. D.", see:
[...].

5-0 out of 5 stars Shortand complete!
This book is short, yet it covers all the essential information you need regarding Bilberry and Lutein for healthy eyes.
Ley covers it all in easy to understand language. A fast read for busy readers who don't want to be short-changed on information. The title of this book is a perfect summary of its contents.

5-0 out of 5 stars PROTECTING OUR EYES!
This is aneasy to read guide to learning about our eyes and how to safeguard our vision. This compact thirty-ninepage phamplet offers insight into Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Night Blindness,"Snow" Blindness, Antioxidants, Bilberry, Lutein, and nuturing properties contained in some foods.

Author Beth M. Ley, Ph.D,has given us the first step, the basics,in helping us to help ourselves. I especially liked the chapter on foods.Spinach, collard greens, leeks, peas, kiwi fruit, zucchini, corn, grapes, kale, squash, broccoli.I knew about carrots but not the other veggies and fruits.

Author Ley includes results ofstudies documenting those at risk for eye damage, and emphasizes that our eyes are our most delicate and sensitive organs. Protect them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic New Hope for Those with Macular Degeneration
I was absolutely delighted to read Dr. Kondrot's book Healing the Eye the Natural Way.I am a Family Physician, a Homeopathic Doctor, and I have a family history of macular degeneration. This book helps me on all three ofthose levels. This book presents a sensible and rational,multi-disciplinary, holistic approach to eye health and particularly tomacular degenaration. We need more information like that found in thisbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Treatments for Macular Degeneration
Given that it is estimated that 13 million Americans are to suffer from Age-Related Macular Degeneration, it is time that someone from the field of medicine step forward into the realm of natural medicine and give us hope.In this book, Dr. Kondrot introduces an alternative approach to help healmacular degeneration at a time that conventional medicine does not havemuch to offer patients with this diagnosis.Dr. Kondrot has introduced hisapproach in three main parts in the book.In the first section he teachesthe value of a healthy diet, balanced exercise, and stress management.Inthe 2nd section, he recommends additional nutritional and eye specificherbal supplements to support circulatory and nervous system. And finallyin the 3rd section, three revolutionary techniques are introduced:classical homeopathy, chelation therapy and micro-current stimulation. Most of us have herad of chelation therapy in relation to treating heavymetal toxicity or cardiovascular disorders. The idea of chelation therapyas a treatment for macular degeneration will strike most readers as quitenovel.Likewise, many will not have heard of Microcurrent Stimulation, anadaption of TENS unit used for pain management, to stimulate eyecirculation. In classical homeopathy, a correct constitutional remedy isuseful in healing the person as a whole and can bring miraculous outcomewhen combined with the rest of the mentioned therapies.Patienttestimonials are especially compelling. Readers will find this book easyto read because of its' simple language, slightly oversized font and roomypage layout. In addition the upbeat, and friendly tone providesencouragement and support for the readers in the healing process. Resources are helpful to acquire the mentioned products. It is wonderfulto know that the material in this book is compiled from years of work anddedication of a respected specialist who has dared to go the distance inthis field.

2-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of generality
I purchased this book for a family member who is in the early stages of glaucoma, hoping that holistic approaches might reduce the probability of surgery later on. While the book does provide some useful informationregarding the importance of selenium, chromium and lutein in themaintenance of eye health, its extremely general information on most topicsis almost useless. For example, Kondrot states that it is important tominimize stress and avoid processed foods, both factors in decreasing thebody's retention of toxic compounds. However, he also seems to advocateavoidance of large quantities of fluids. This is contrary to his ownhypothesis that it is important to clear the body of toxins, and ignoresthe fact that diabetics(who are a large proportion of his targetaudience)cannot safely do this for an extended period of time! On thesubject of stress relief, his advice is also very general, although notdangerous in its execution.
