Editorial Review

Book Description
Hunger and Shame is a passionate account of child malnutrition in a relatively wealthy populace, the Chagga in Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. Views of family members, health workers and government officials provide insights into the complex of ideas, institutions and human fallibility that sustain the shame of malnutrition in the mountains.

Discussing the moral and practical dilemmas posed by the presence of malnourished children in the community, the authors explore the shame associated with child hunger in relation to social organization, colonial history and the global economy. Their discussions challenge the reader to ask fundamental questions concerning ethics, the politics of poverty and shame and social relations. ... Read more

This is the single most important book on African poverty you are likely to read. Ok, it doesn't compare with the scope of Cliffe's The African Poor. But it is very powerfully written and extremely insightful. Thosefamiliar with participatory assessments will know they often find thatrespondents blame the poor for their plight (not surprising, we do the samein developed countries) - but these results are usually ignored by theresearchers. This book demonstrates how important this finding is - notbecause the poor ARE to blame for their poverty, but because the stigmaattached to being poor creates a social poverty trap. ... Read more

Book Description
Professor Waterlow provides, for the first time in one volume, a critical and up-to-date review of all the many facets of the problem of protein-energy malnutrition. This comprehensive coverage begins with an analysis of the characteristics of severe and fatal cases and a detailed discussion of treatment, aimed specifically at paediatricians. It goes on to describe and analyse the features of malnutrition as it develops in the community: impaired growth, frequent infections and retardation of mental development, and ends with an examination of controversial questions of strategy and tactics for prevention. ... Book Description
World travel and trade have increased the public's knowledge of and concern for international health issues. Infectious diseases are now the biggest killer of children and young adults worldwide. They account for more than 13 million deaths a year and half the deaths in developing countries. Other worldwide health concerns include access to essential drugs, malnutrition, and risky health behaviors.

Worldwide Health Sourcebook reviews information important to individuals in both developing and industrialized countries. Readers will learn about leading causes of death, disease dispersion and prevention, emerging diseases, and risky health behaviors including tobacco use, overeating, and sexually transmitted disease risks. Specific concerns for children, women, and the elderly are reviewed. The effects on health of the environment, economics, and politics are also covered. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Reducing malnutrition is central to reducing poverty. Malnutrition is implicated in half of all child deaths and causes much illness and cognitive underdevelopment. As the growing evidence demonstrates, fetal and young child malnutrition threatens survival, growth, and development in childhood, and it increases the risk of chronic diseases in later life. The Millennium Development Goals cannot be reached without significant efforts to eliminate malnutrition.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank have joined forces to provide a fresh perspective on the global effort to address malnutrition, and to evaluate how the two agencies can contribute to the agenda and its implementation. Combating Malnutrition--which is the product of reviews of UNICEF and World Bank portfolios, analyses of the evolution of key policy narratives, country case studies, and workshops--gets behind the headlines to show how policy changes in nutrition happen, what influences these processes, and what lessons can be learned for the future. ...
