This is the single most important book on African poverty you are likely to read. Ok, it doesn't compare with the scope of Cliffe's The African Poor. But it is very powerfully written and extremely insightful. Thosefamiliar with participatory assessments will know they often find thatrespondents blame the poor for their plight (not surprising, we do the samein developed countries) - but these results are usually ignored by theresearchers. This book demonstrates how important this finding is - notbecause the poor ARE to blame for their poverty, but because the stigmaattached to being poor creates a social poverty trap. ... Read more

Product Description
Nearly 800 million people in the world do not have enough to eat. In many developing countries, inadequate amounts of food and inadequate diversity of food continue to be priority health problems. Malnutrition in all its forms increases the risk of disease and early death. Neurologic Consequences of Malnutrition, edited by Dr. Marco T. Medina, seeks to underline the magnitude of neurologic diseases related to malnutrition and the importance of early detection and opportune treatment. Designed particularly for neurologists practicing in low-resource environments, this text is written by a multinational group of expert practicing neurologists who treat patients suffering from the neurologic consequence of malnutrition. Neurologic Consequences of Malnutrition begins with an overview of the epidemiology and incidence of malnutrition and neurologic disorders. There is a discussion of the clinical and functional assessment of undernourished patients, focusing on patients with Protein-Energy Malnutrition, as well as an extensive and complete classification of the different micronutrient deficiencies related to neurologic symptoms. Other topics covered include the relationship between alcoholism and malnutrition, a major public health challenge in developing nations, and the neurophysiologic findings in undernourished patients. ... Product Description
Reducing malnutrition is central to reducing poverty. Malnutrition is implicated in half of all child deaths and causes much illness and cognitive underdevelopment. As the growing evidence demonstrates, fetal and young child malnutrition threatens survival, growth, and development in childhood, and it increases the risk of chronic diseases in later life. The Millennium Development Goals cannot be reached without significant efforts to eliminate malnutrition.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Bank have joined forces to provide a fresh perspective on the global effort to address malnutrition, and to evaluate how the two agencies can contribute to the agenda and its implementation. Combating Malnutrition--which is the product of reviews of UNICEF and World Bank portfolios, analyses of the evolution of key policy narratives, country case studies, and workshops--gets behind the headlines to show how policy changes in nutrition happen, what influences these processes, and what lessons can be learned for the future. ... Product Description
The individual and institutional capacities required for the prevention and reduction of nutritional insecurity and hunger in lesser-developed countries as the twenty-first century approaches are identified in this book. Household nutritional "security" can be defined as the successful - and sustainable - achievement of nutritional status that is adequate for maintaining a healthy and active life for all individuals in the household. This security arises from an adequate supply of food in the house, sufficient care for the individuals, and the prevention and control of disease.
The essays in this book champion the idea of increasing, or scaling up, grass roots operations to provide nutritional security, while scaling down the efforts of national and international institutions. Scaling up involves strengthening local capacities to improve and expand upon current successful programs by building upon existing local culture and organizations. This, in turn, enables the programs to strengthen relation ... Read more

Product Description
Good nutrition, like other vital occupational safety and health issues, is the foundation of workplace productivity and safety--priority concerns shared by unions, workers, employers, and governments around the world. It is well documented that unhealthy foods can lead to obesity and chronic diseases, while macro- and micronutrient deficiencies can cause malnutrition. In both these instances, the effects are detrimental to a strong, well-equipped workforce.

This comprehensive volume established a clear link between good nutrition and high productivity. It demonstrates that ensuring that workers have access to nutritious, safe, and affordable food, and adequate meal break and decent conditions for eating is not only socially important and economically viable, but a profitable business practice too.

Setting out key points for designing a meal program, it presents a multitude of "food solutions," including canteens, meal or food vouchers, mess rooms and kitchenettes, and partnerships with local vendors.Through case studies from a variety of enterprises in 28 industrialized and developing countries, the book offers valuable practical food solutions which can be adapted to workplaces of different sizes and with different budgets. It also addresses an often-overlooked issue in nutrition:access to clean drinking water.

Relevant laws, regulations, and guides pertaining to meal breaks and workplace nutrition are also highlighted in this volume, and an extensive section containing checklists and other useful resources for unions, employers and governments is included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All Pregnant Woman Should Read This
It is a medical book so it may take some getting used to the lingo, if you aren't already acquainted with medical terms, but that is non existent compared to what information a soon to be mother will receive! I have seen this information work over and over again for woman from all over the world. I have seen moms who usually deliver babies early go to their due dates, I have seen moms who's blood pressure was so high their were scheduled for induction only to be told everything is OK after implementing higher protein, salting food to taste, and more vegetablesto their diets. I really wish this book was more in mainstream reading for women, it's worth it's weight in gold.

4-0 out of 5 stars Provides essential information on toxemia
Dr. Brewer's book, Metabolic Toxemia of Late Pregnancy, is a difficult book to read for the non-medical person but it provides essential information on toxemia and how to avoid this potentially deadly disease ofpregnancy. It is written by a doctor for a doctor. As a clinicianstudying over 500 women with toxemia over a 10 year period, he presentsconvincing proof in the form of case studies, that he understood thedisease, how to treat it, and how to prevent it.

I would recommend anypregnant woman who is at risk or showing signs of developing toxemia tosuggest the book to their doctor. ... Read more

Product Description
Malnutrition is a general term for the medical condition caused by an improper or insufficient diet. It most often refers to under-nutrition resulting from inadequate consumption, poor absorption, or excessive loss of nutrients, but the term can also encompass over-nutrition, resulting from overeating or excessive intake of specific nutrients. An individual will experience malnutrition if the appropriate amount of, or quality of nutrients comprising a healthy diet are not consumed for an extended period of time. An extended period of malnutrition can result in starvation or many other diseases such as scurvy. Malnutrition as the lack of sufficient nutrients to maintain healthy bodily functions is typically associated with extreme poverty in economically developing countries. It is a common cause of reduced intelligence in parts of the world affected by famine. This book presents leading research from around the world. ... Read more
