Editorial Review

Book Description
The individual and institutional capacities required for the prevention and reduction of nutritional insecurity and hunger in lesser-developed countries as the twenty-first century approaches are identified in this book. Household nutritional "security" can be defined as the successful - and sustainable - achievement of nutritional status that is adequate for maintaining a healthy and active life for all individuals in the household. This security arises from an adequate supply of food in the house, sufficient care for the individuals, and the prevention and control of disease.
The essays in this book champion the idea of increasing, or scaling up, grass roots operations to provide nutritional security, while scaling down the efforts of national and international institutions. Scaling up involves strengthening local capacities to improve and expand upon current successful programs by building upon existing local culture and organizations. This, in turn, enables the programs to strengthen relation ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
India has committed to attaining the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by the year 2015. The MDGs are a set of numerical and time-bound targets related to key achievements in human development launched at the Millennium Summit 2000. In the developmental context, they constitute the most widely-accepted yardstick of efforts made and policies implemented by governments, donors, and non-governmental organizations. Attaining the MDGs is imperative and especially so for a developing country such as India.Significant among these goals are:BL Halving of the child underweight rate (from its level in 1990) BL Halving the proportion of people who suffer from hunger BL Two-thirds reduction in infant mortality rates BL Universal primary schooling BL Complete elimination of gender disparities in schooling opportunitiesHow likely is India to reach these targets? And what will it take--by way of policy interventions--to attain the goals? This report critically analyzesIndia's performance across five selected MDGs. It uses a variety of data sources to analyze past progress in social indicators, paying particular attention to the heterogeneity of progress across India's many states and sub-units. It establishes correlations between the millennium development outcomes and various policy interventions, and proceeds to project the likely evolution of the millennium development indicators through 2015 based on particular policy scenarios. The report concludes by assessing the prospects of India as a whole--above all its poorer states--attaining the five MDGs by 2015. In doing so, the report highlights the type and scale of interventions that will be needed to attain these goals. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
This book is the first comprehensive assessment of nutrition in Asia, a region that has the largest concentration of global malnutrition. It reviews a wide array of nutrition-relevant trends, policies, programmes, challenges and opportunities in Asia.

The simple fact that every third child born is malnourished at birth represents an enormous drain on human and economic development. The pay-off to turning this tide is both immense and immeasurable. In the long-term, sustainable poverty-reducing economic growth will simply not be possible without dealing with malnutrition.

This book describes the main driving forces behind the groundswell of under nutrition. It sheds light on the emerging "double burden" of co-existing underweight and overweight and the linkages between these two different forms of malnutrition.

Editorial Review

Book Description
One in three preschool children in developing countries is undernourished. Consequently, they are likely to have impaired immune systems, poor cognitive development, low productivity as adults, and susceptibility to diet-related chronic diseases such as hypertension and coronary heart disease later in life. Undernourished female preschoolers are likely to grow into undernourished young women who are more likely to give birth to babies who are undernourished even before they are born, thus perpetuating the intergenerational transmission of deprivation.

This report sheds light on some of the main causes of child malnutrition, projects how many children are likely to be malnourished in the year 2020 given current trends, and identifies priority actions for reducing malnutrition most quickly in the coming decades. ... Read more
