5-0 out of 5 stars Absolute must for every dog lover....
Once in a while a book comes along which in the field of practical applications... is a real treasure. This is one of those books. Full of photos and easy to read text, not to mention helpful advice, "this is it"-- for the dog owner who really cares. It will not turn you completely from being independent of your vet, but it will help in determining which symptoms and cases where you would just have to run to him. For example, in the section "Intestines", it describes the most common irregularities, like diarrhea, the color, consistency, odor, frequency, condition of dog, common causes, and finally the treatment section. And it does not stop there. It will then give related problems about the intestines, from malabsorption syndromes to colitis, obstructions, constipation, voluntary retention, mechanical blockage, damaged nerves, flatulence and coprophagia (yeech!), et.al. And that is just a section, as I said, under Intestines. Whether you have one dog, or several kennels, professional breeder, backyard breeder, or no breeder at all, and just interested in the well-being of man's best friend, it will turn you from a feeling of uncertainty into a confident owner. It's the "leash" you can do.

This revised and expanded edition is one of my prime sources of information regarding the health of my dogs. It will save the owner, as it has saved me from needless worries, (or make it worse, depending really on the personality of the owner), and a lot of expenses. Read it, you'll like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dog Owners Home Veterinary Handbook
An incredible resource. This excellent book provides dog owners with a wealth of practical, accurate information to help guide reactions to symptoms. We now go to the vet much more informed, and are also able to better appreciate the care the vet gives. The section on poisons is extremely helpful, giving the nefarious and varied symptoms good description, and offering effective home remedies which add valuable time to you getting your pet into treatment.

All dog owners should own, and read thoroughly, this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars The first aid information is almost useless
I was very disappointed with this book, but I suppose it serves a certain purpose. I went to several bookstores looking for a first aid guide for dogs, and this seems to be the standard offering. It includes information about first aid, but it isn't suitable for use in a first aid situation. Instead, it's more of a book for bathroom readers and do-it-yourselfers. I really don't know why the authors chose to include first aid in this book. It must have been for the sake of comprehensiveness -- they must have included it not so it would be useful, but so no one would ask why it was missing.

First of all, the pictures are a joke. They're small, they're in black-and-white, and if you don't read the captions, you can't even tell what you're looking at. When you have an injured dog to take care of, you don't want to make decisions based on Rorschach blobs. Clear drawings or _very_ well done color photos are standard for presenting human first aid methods.

Second, the decision flowcharts are unhelpful. After looking at several of them, I can't imagine using them in an emergency. Try to answer this question: "Is the dog in distress?" Huh? Some dogs seem to be in distress 24/7. Others will injure themselves without complaint if they think it pleases you. Can you imagine trying to translate the word "distress" into concrete terms while your dog is bleeding? The word might have a precise definition elsewhere in the book, but a good first aid guide doesn't require you to do research in the middle of an emergency.

Third, I failed in ten minutes of looking to locate information on the simple injury that brought to my attention my need for such a book. My dog's paws swelled up and started to peel after our first run in summer heat. Strangely, the index didn't send me to a central place for paw injuries. It seems that you have to have a tentative diagnosis before you can find any information. I looked up "blisters" and didn't find anything. I flipped through the book trying to pick up a sense of the organization, which led me to some first aid pages but no information about paws.

It turned out that his injuries were burns, a common paw injury that would deserve a place in a book a fifth the size of this one. The information must be in the book somewhere -- how could it be missing from a book that includes abortion, cancer, and geriatrics? -- but I could not diagnose the problem until I put this book down and sought information elsewhere.

(By human first aid standards, the authors of this book have bungled a well-understood task, but by dog first aid standards, they might be pretty good, for all I know. All the other books I found with dog first aid information suffered from similar problems, and none were half as useful as a typical human guide. Dozens of excellent first aid guides are available for humans, ranging from useful twenty-page pamphlets produced with line drawings and basic vocabulary to professional manuals larger than this book. Why can't I find a single well done, up-to-date first aid guide for dogs? If I recall correctly, _The Home Pet Vet Guide: Dogs_ was well illustrated and well organized, but it hasn't been updated in twenty years. Another book that I haven't been able to examine, but which sounds promising, is _Dog First Aid Emergency Care for the Hunting, Working, and Outdoor Dog_.)

Despite my disappointment with the first aid aspect of the book, I considered buying it anyway for the other veterinary information. I decided against it, since I already have a guide to basic care. I just couldn't imagine myself using it. It may be interesting to read about whelping, but if your dog were about to have puppies, would you really rely on this book, or would you buy a more specialized one? If your dog develops cancer, will you rely on the copy of _Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook_ that's been on your bookshelf for three years, or will you seek a newer, more focused source of information? Or will you trust your vet?

The truth is that while there's lots of information in this book, it mostly provides interesting but ultimately insufficient chunks of information. A whole page devoted to a rare disorder might seem like an impressive amount of detail, but it's pointless until your dog develops that disorder. Then that page becomes useful, but it also becomes absurdly inadequate. And it hardly needs to be said that a six hundred page book won't enable you to accurately diagnose your dog or second-guess your vet. A textbook for an undergraduate physiology course -- which most vets take before they enter veterinary school -- contains as much information as this guide (and much more lavish illustrations to boot).

If you don't want to take your dog to the vet and are too lazy to study real vet school texts and veterinary reference books, or if you enjoy trivia, or if you want to annoy your vet with half-informed theories about your dog's maladies, then this is the book for you. If you have already have plenty on your reading list and just want a guide for basic care and emergencies, I'm sorry to say I haven't yet found the right book. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The closer a secret is kept, the more powerful the impact once it is finally revealed. Such is the case with author and activist J.L. King's intriguing look at the lives and lifestyles of black men who sleep with other men but do not consider themselves to be gay. These men live "on the down low," the "DL" for short, and their sexual activities have gained significant notice as the rate of HIV/AIDS infection in black women has skyrocketed, with the vast majority of cases coming from heterosexual sex. King is a veteran of the DL himself and his book serves partly as a social and psychological survey of the other men he has surveyed and partly as highly candid memoir. King was well regarded in his community, popular at his church, successful in his career, and married to a woman who had no idea that his secret life existed. But when she caught him in a lie and with another man, the marriage collapsed and King's long and painful path to self-awareness began. King cites the negative image many socially conservative black men have of homosexuality as an obstacle to those men being honest with their partners and themselves about who they are. Among the more intriguing elements of On the Down Low are the peculiar approaches men on the DL have to the sexual act, seeking a strictly physical sexual relationship with their secret male partners while remaining in more traditional arrangements with women. Whether this discrepancy is a product of scrupulously guarded secrecy and shame or the natural preference of an understudied sexual identity is one of the numerous questions raised by this book. Though the infection statistics make the DL a huge public health issue, King is neither a sociologist nor a medical professional. And while a more clinical look at this issue would be welcome, King accomplished what he set out to do: provide light and insight into a world that so many have worked so hard to keep in the shadows. --John Moe ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Come Out, Not Down Low
J. L. King's part informative, part personal book exposing the trend of down-low African-American men who sleep with other men leaves a bittersweet taste in my mouth. Granted, I commend him confronting this decadent truth that many women (and some men) don't seem to know about or turn a blind eye to. He provides an honest look at what this DL behavior is doing to our communities, our homes and our relationships, and paints a disturbing portrait of the rise of HIV among young people. King also imparts prudent advice to women looking for signs about their men and counsels them to care about themselves and their health a little more.

Yet, how can a man who sleeps with another man deny his own sexuality? That, in my opinion, is the root of this problem. That disavowal of who they are is what's killing African-American women and men at an alarming rate. Although King does tell men to be honest with their partners, making them aware of their sexual tastes, he doesn't encourage men to confront their own sexuality enough. Labels aside, you should get to know yourself before you get involved with someone else. They don't have to scream it to the world, but at least to thine own self be true. As Black women, we will always stand behind our men, and for us they need to be honest with themselves.

For what it's worth, King has done his homework and gotten in touch with himself about his life and issues. I applaud him. For our sistahs and brothas' sakes, DL men should do the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Mr. King!
I'd like to thank Mr. King for writing this book. I was hesitant to read On the Down Low because I thought it was going to be a typical "black women can't keep their men" type of book. But I was pleasantly surprised. Mr. King has presented a very well rounded look at the subculture of "down low brothers" as well as the effects of this activity on the black community. After reading this book I felt like a blindfold has been lifted from my eyes. I want to discuss this issue with my fellow sisters. The AIDS epidemic is effecting people at alarming rates and it's time to stop pretending that we're invincible. Knowledge is Power! Mr. King is applauded for doing his part to get the word out about the not so obvious sexual "landmines".

1-0 out of 5 stars "What A Darn Shame"!!!
I think Mr. J. King's book is part of his evil plot to self-promote himself & turn even more brothas' on to this nasty-germ traveling phenomenon!!! It's such a shame that a large number of our Beautiful, Handsome, Intelligent, Black men are being turned on & schooled about this *straight from hell* trend! God still has a plan for our Black American men....no matter how the devil tries to turn them out & destroy them as a whole! King, on The Oprah talk show said he still doesnt consider himself gay....now if this man doesnt come across as a complete nut-case, I dont know who does! No man can sleep with other men & enjoy it greatly each time & NOT no they're not gay/homosexual!
That's insane! -- The one thing I do hope comes about as a result of this book being released is that MANY of those Down Low black men living in Atlanta Georgia & most of California [as well as other cities/states] will want to be more honest about there sexuality for a change with the growing number of black women testing postitive for HIV because of DL brother's actions! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Previous reviews are outdated!
The previous 3 reviews were written before the release of this new edition. Still the best single book to read for the oral Boards. All clinicians should own a copy and refer to it often.

2-0 out of 5 stars Why this used to be a good book.
As an attending/assistant professor of anesthesiology I frequently recommend books for residents to read. I still recommend this book, but with the caveat that much of the information is outdated and some of it is no longer even held to be fact. The underlying theme of the book - that comorbid states influence anesthesia and vice versa - is still true. I tell residents to get a used copy or wait until a new edition comes out.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book needs a new edition
Eight years is a long time in the field of anesthesiology. This book would be an invaluable resource IF it wasn't so outdated, but as it is, it talks about too many drugs that are no longer used, and has nothing about many drugs that are commonly used today. IMHO, a current edition of a major anesthesiology text (most of the big name texts have a new edition in the last 1-2 years) is a more useful reference. FWIW, this review is from the perspective of a first-year anesthesiology resident. YMMV. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my back!
About six months ago I was doing quite a lot of weight lifting which was slowly weakening my back. Being on the high school track team I decided to try the running long jump for the first time. When I landed in the sand my lower back gave out and for the next six months I had a dull pain that would stay with me all day, everyday. Some Days my back felt better than others and sometimes it seemed that the only retreat I possibly had from the pain was bed rest. I spent an incredible waste of money on chiropractors that did absolutely nothing for the pain. I was beginning to become depressed because I couldn't do cross country in the fall, and going to work and school felt like going to hell and back everyday. I felt like I was too young to have back problems and I was seeking advice from everyone I could turn to. Then a student teacher of mine told me that a friend of his was using Robin McKenzie's book on how to treat your own back. It took about four or five weeks for the pain to go away, but if I hadn't discovered this book, I'm sure the pain would have lasted many more months, if not years. McKenzie's book tought me very effective techniques for treating my lower back pain and how to prevent it from reocurring. If you buy this book, it is important to be patient with the techniques described. When first starting out, there should be an initial increase in the amount of pain which I experienced. If this pain increase does not go back down to how it was after about a day or if the pain becomes worse, consult with a doctor or physical therapist immediately. This was a very helpful book and I recommend it to anyone with lower back pain. It wasn't untill my back was damaged that my whole life cam into perspective. Nobody should deserve to live with chronic back pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended by Physical Therapist
I am a Physical Therapist who uses the McKenzie approach to low back and neck pain. I was introduced to the techniques during one of my clicical affiliations as a student. I can honestly say that there have been very few patients that I have treated that have not been able to find relief with this technique. "Treat Your Own Back" is a wonderful resource that I issue to the majority of my patients in conjunction with their treatment and home exercise program. The book includes a basic, but thorough review of spinal anatomy. Also has very easy to understand text accompanied by pictures explaining the text. I highly recommend this book; however, if one does not achieve relief with this technique, or if thier symptoms increase or travel to another area, it is crucial that they consult with their physician and/or physical therapist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Here's what I think...
Book discusses a very specific way of treating back pain. In short, you do these backward bending motions which is suppose to have an effect on the discs in your spine. In addition, you sit up straight and watch your posture. All in all, it didn't help me much, but I do know many people it has helped- so I say give it a try. Also liked "Treat Your Own Knees" if you have knee pain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish I knew about this years ago!
I have been working out for years and within the last year I have been running over 12 miles a week, weight training, taking boot camp classes at my gym as well as tai box classes three times a week. I thought I was eating healthy. But I could never lose any weight. I grow up eating bread with every meal. I originaly read Dr. Atkin's boot the New Diet Revolution. I found this boot to be to strigent for my liking. I was feeling tired and weak. I read the Zone and with in the last two weeks I lost five pounds, feel energize as well as I did not suffer from any PMS. I have told my mother about this book as well as a friend who suffers from MS. They both went out and bought the book and are begining the zone plan. This book makes it easy to follow. I was amazed it even suggested what type of fast food I could eat.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great diet - don't start with this book though
After a lot of encouragement from my mother, who has been following the Zone for two years, I decided to try this diet. I've been on it for 3 months and I've lost 28 pounds and 2 clothing sizes without really changing my modest exercise habits. I eat half as many calories as I used to, but I'm not hungry. I used to have terrible insomnia, often getting no more than 4 hours of sleep a night - that has vanished along with my nearly-constant heartburn. After two months, my blood cholesterol dropped from 200 to 180. I have energy to burn. I take a Cheat Day on Sundays when I eat all the evil things I've been craving that week - croissants, Nutella, McD's sausage biscuits, creamy desserts - and by the end of the day I feel so draggy, dehydrated, sinus-y, that it's a relief to wake up Monday morning and go back onto the plan.

So, why don't I recommend this book? It was the first book Barry Sears (co-)wrote about the Zone, and it reads like an infomercial. The writing style is... loud. It is also poorly organized, jumping around from biochemical jargon to little tidbits of practical advice to anecdotal evidence to health claims for different conditions. And finally, this book doesn't provide any information beyond the very basics about how to actually follow the plan. If you are already convinced (perhaps by all these glowing reviews) of the benefits of the Zone and want to jump right in, the more comprehensive Mastering the Zone with its tons of practical tips is a much better place to start. If after beginning the diet you want more background information about how it works, then pick up this book. The one good thing about the early book is the more gourmet recipes (like the lamb with herbed cheese on zucchini-and-squash "pasta" - mmmm!). There are more recipes in Mastering the Zone, but for my taste they stick too strictly to the glycemic-index guide and also try too hard for one-pot meals; I've never used them.

An issue to look out for: I found that the body fat tables in the back way overestimated my fat weight, which meant an artificially low food intake level. After a couple of weeks hovering on the edge of hunger, I got my body fat percentage measured on a machine at the employee wellness office at work and got a result of ten percentage points less! I raised my food intake and continued losing weight at a healthy clip, with no more hunger pangs. I suspect that the bodyfat-table problem may be why a few reviewers here felt hungry on the Zone. The tables probably underestimated their lean weight, resulting in recommended food intakes that were too low.

The bottom line: even if all the health claims aren't sound, this is a balanced low-calorie diet that's easy to follow indefinitely without hunger, and what can be wrong with that - unless you are Nabisco Foods or something? Just try to start with Mastering the Zone instead.

2-0 out of 5 stars Eh.
"The Zone" is a good instructional manual for people who have extremely poor diets, but for the average person with a modicum of common sense, it's quite useless. This is the first diet "manual" I've read and no doubt it will be my last. I picked up a lot of good information reading "The Zone," and indeed, I did loose three pounds in about three weeks. Many of the recipes are tasty - if you have an hour to cut up eight cups of fresh broccolli, that is. But counting out the various "blocks" took an inordinate amount of time and energy from my already busy schedule. Once I replaced the time I spent planning Zone menus, grocery shopping, prepping my meals, and other minutiae with daily cardio exercise, *that's* when I started to notice results! Now I just follow a simple routine of limiting my caloric intake. One thing that was very misleading about "The Zone" is that the authors claim that the dieter should not feel hungry. Not so. Make no mistake: this diet hinges on portion control and calorie counting, and I, like many people I know who are on the Zone diet, was famished beyond belief, particularly during the first two weeks. Bottom line is, if one is healthy and fit, nixing carbs from your diet doesn't matter, 'cause ultimately, it's about how many calories you put in your body and how many you work off. ... Read more

The person who thinks the price of this book is insanity is obviously not a medical professional. Compared to the usual price of a medical text with color illustrations, its a steal.

This outstanding atlas belongs in every office that provides healthcare to children. I've used it continuously since the first edition came out when I was in pediatric residency training a dozen years ago.

I can say, without any hesitation, that this is the ONE book that EVERY professional that cares for children should have at his or her disposal. Drs. Zitelli and Davis have produced yet another incredible version of this book, which illustrates almost every important physical finding in pediatrics. This is an indispensible resource that I find myself using constantly, both as a reference and as a guide for parents, who often find the illustrations of diseases helpful in understanding their child's problems.

Editorial Review

A classic natural pet-care book from two celebrated veterinary specialists in chemical-free nutrition, treatment, and natural healing for pets, Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs & Cats offers valuable natural and holistic advice on a host of pet topics, including, but not limited to, diet, exercise, environment, coping with a pet's death, and how to care for a sick animal. In addition to their thorough discussion of the above, Richard Pitcairn, D.V.M., and his wife, Susan Hubble Pitcairn, M.S., offer a comprehensive "quick reference" section on animal illnesses, organized alphabetically and including a brief description of each illness, preventative measures that may be taken, and holistic and natural treatment options for both dogs and cats--treatments that should always be discussed with one's vet before being used. Occasional line drawings, informative graphs, and the Pitcairn's intelligent prose make this guide a must-have for pet owners interested in a natural lifestyle for their pets. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Book for Your Home Library
I highly recommend this book. The information is invaluable and the subject is presented in easy-to-understand English (not filled with technical and medical jargon). Dr. Pitcairn covers just about every major aspect of your dog's/cat's general and nutritional health. I did not receive the impression that Pitcairn was advocating a complete switch to home-cooked foods versus manufactured kibble or you would put your dog at risk. Most of the animals he presents as case studies were elderly or chronically sick to begin with and had nothing to lose. He merely points out that nutrion is the foundation for good health and our dogs and cats are often being compromised in this due to the nutrional choices we make for them. I purchased this book mainly so I could enhance my own Cairn Terrier's super-premium kibble with tasty and nutritious additions that would further optimize her food. Let's face it, most premium foods opt for good nutrition over gourmet taste. I asked my vet but he had no recommendations. Dog and Cat owners should be careful. Very few vets today have any great understanding about the pet food industry because it is not covered during their studies. I was shocked to learn that the pet foods offered for sale in my vet's office were there because the manufacturer rents the space from him and places the products on the shelves. That is the reason this book is so important. The chapters on flea control, weight problems, and general topics like spay and neutering, and even the death of your animal were a truly pleasant surprise. Every dog or cat owner should have this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, common sense approach to caring for your pet.
I love my dog and have always been concerned about the chemicals, dyes and other additives found in most commercial dog foods. I have talked to many veterinarians who are unconcerned about the rancid meat scraps, etc. that are put into kibble. Although I have found a product containing no chemical additives, I still felt guilty about feeding my dog something that I wouldn't expect a person to be able to live on. I have read many books on dog health, and was not impressed by any of them. Then I read Dr. Pitcairn's book. It was intelligent, well written and made perfect sense. The only inhibition I had about starting a natural diet for my dog was the cost. I'm a graduate student and money is tight. However, I started supplementing my dog's kibble with Pitcairn's suggested recepies. She is bouncing and playing like a puppy, her teeth are cleaner and her coat has gone from dull to shiny. I am so impressed by the changes I've seen, I have decided to eliminate the kibble entirely. Feeding my dog a natural food diet is much easier and less expensive than I thought. I have already extolled the virtues of this book to all of my dog owning friends and would highly recommend it to anyone who cares about the health of their animal. A wonderful book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Truly, fabulous!
This is THE book on natural pet care, referenced in so many, many books written after this one. Pitcairn's writing is easy to understand, his ideas simple to grasp. One need not have prior knowledge in natural care to appreciate this book. And, this book is wonderful for the expert as well. A holistic vet I met recommended I read this book, and I'm sooo glad I did. Hope you'll read it too. ... Read more

Editorial Review

When Michael Milken was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 1993, he wasted no time switching from his daily egg-and-bacon-sandwich breakfasts to a low-fat, vegetarian diet. He also founded CaP CURE, the Association for the Cure of Cancer of the Prostate. Through research supported by CaP CURE, Milken learned that cutting down on fat was not enough--that soy protein could be an important missing ingredient in his diet. He duly incorporated all of the cancer-fighting ingredients into his diet, but he missed the joy of eating.

Enter Beth Ginsberg, Culinary Institute of America (CIA) graduate and natural foods chef. When Milken hired her in 1995, she turned his medicinal soy drinks into tasty, healthy fruit smoothies, his tofu-spread sandwiches into Vegetable Reubens--with tempeh bacon! It became clear that a healthy, cancer-fighting diet need not mean an end to culinary pleasure. In the beautifully photographed The Taste for Living Cookbook, Ginsberg collects more than 75 of Milken's favorite dishes, from Tofu Dog Casserole with a Pretzel Crust to Greek Spinach Pie in a Phyllo Nest to Devil's "Fool" Cake with Cocoa Frosting. Colorful icons next to each recipe let you know how long a dish will take to prepare--many are under an hour from kitchen to table. Nutritional details are given at the end of each recipe, and Ginsberg notes when a substitution can be made (say, low-fat turkey in place of tempeh in a sandwich). Proceeds from the sales of The Taste for Living Cookbook will go to further CaP CURE's research--resulting, one hopes, in even more delicious, healthful meals from chef Ginsberg. --Rebecca A. 3-0 out of 5 stars If I Were A Rich Man...
The taste For Living Cookbook Mike Milken's Favorite Recipes For Fighting Cancer is a nicely photographed book. The recipes are basic health food fare. Cut down on fat, avoid meat, eat lots of veggies and soy. If I was a wealthy man I would have a professional chef move into my home and cook these complicated meals im my professional kitchen. I would also go to a medition center in Massachusetts "based on Ayurveda tradition" and I would "invite a doctor trained in both Western and Ayurveda medicine to move into...our house for a few months" I don't mean to be cynical but I have neither the time or money to follow this books recipes. I did not find this book very helpful .

5-0 out of 5 stars Mike Milken's Favorite Recipes Are My Favorite Recipes Too!
I like to eat healthy because I want to prevent cancer. This recipes are for everyone, not just for cancer patients. I am an 18 year old vegetarian and I love the recipes in this book. They are proof that you can eat great food and stay healthy at the same time.

The belief that something good for you has to taste awful is just a myth. Just try the recipes in this book and convince yourself!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
The book presents recipes attractively. I've tried a few and they were easier and better than I expected, given the somewhat unusual ingredients for familiar foods. The book goes astray, to some degree, in my opinion, because it works too hard at recreating unhealthy high fat foods with low-fat, high-soy, equivalents. Better to just present vegetarian recipees that don't try to seem like something else. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great office reference book..
As an internist starting out, I found this book invaluable to my patient practice. It is well organized and concise. It gives detailed and well illustrated instructions on the various procedures. It is divided into :

Editorial Review

Acne: it's not just for teens anymore. Thanks to changing hormone levels, many women in their 30s and 40s (and some men as well) can expect to regain a part of youth they really didn't miss. It's not the curfew—-it's the problem skin. Early on in The Acne Prescription, Dr. Perricone (The Perricone Prescription) repeatedly emphasizes that half his patients are adult women. And really, this book seems written specifically for them. He refers to acne as a systemic inflammatory disease. His three-part program aimed at reducing inflammation emphasizes widespread dietary changes generally based on the glycemic index of foods, taking a variety of supplements, and using specific topical applications. The diet features plenty of water, several servings of salmon each week, and lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. An extremely detailed guide to supplements offers an excellent education, and an illustrated yoga course provides a method of relaxation and gentle exercise. Few of the recipes from an extensive section are geared for novice cooks (almond flour pancakes with mixed berry compote, for example). If you're interested in curing acne problems from the inside out and are willing to make substantial lifestyle choices, you'll find this an excellent learning tool; in other instances, it may seem simply overwhelming.--Jill Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars I'm a walking billboard
I was so excited to read Dr. Perricone's book. I recently purchased this book for my 11 year old son. It was not until I read his book that I really understood what had happened to me. I'm a 32 year old mom. I never experienced acne problems until my first pregnancy. I was one BIG walking pimple. You couldn't touch my face, chest, breasts, or back without touching a pimple. I was ashamed to go out in public because people would always stare at me as if I had leprosy or something. After my second child, I weighed in at 285 pounds. My doctor told me to go on a diet and cut out anything white (starches, sugar,etc.). Well, I did just that. In about 5 months time, I lost over 90 pounds. Also, people at work would always compliment me on my clear skin. I just figured my skin cleared because I was exercising (walking on my lunch break). I never realized until now that my previous skin problems were due to my overall eating habits. This book gets two thumbs up from me. If I can clear my skin and lose weight by just a few changes in my daily life, anyone can!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is good - worth reading
This is a good book. It is filled with information that is helpful for everyone. Even though it is apparently targeted to acne sufferers, it contains a wealth of information about improving the appearance of the skin at any age and it sets you on the right path to achieving great health overall.
The author's style is simple and straightforward. The program he outlines is excellent and within a few days of following his advice on diet, I had already noticed dramatic improvements in my skin. While the book may not be a thrill to read like many other novels or reading material you enjoy, it lives up to its claims quite elegantly. I recommend this book to anyone interested in improving the appearance of her/his skin and overall health.

2-0 out of 5 stars too womany
I was a little put off by the fact that this book caters mostly to women as if men`s acne didnt matter or wasnt just as traumatic.I cant stand men that care too much about women and completely disregard their own gender`s health issues.By the way,did you know that acne and other skin conditions including rosacea have been linked to a human skin parasite called Demodex? Have your skin checked for demodex if its covered with alot of red and sore bumps and pustules before beginning an acne treatment program.I recommend "Clear Skin" by Dan Kern over this book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Beats Ettinger Hands Down
That pretty much sums it up. This book is a lot more user friendly. Ettinger's is good for those in acedemia. Nelson & Couto is for those in the "real world".

5-0 out of 5 stars Vet Students Agree
I recently consulted with a group of advanced veterinary students on which of the small animal internal medicine texts would be the most useful to me. For the record, I am an allied health professional with more background in human medicine. I looked at this text and Ettinger's, which--again!--my sources kept referring to as the bible of small animal internal medicine. Ettinger was only about $30 more than this text, and as a big two-volume set, it looked like a better deal at first glance. However, this text is FAR more user-friendly, and there were sections that I read right away out of sheer interest. Unless you are a vet student planning to make a meaningful investment in heavy books, this book is likely to meet your needs and do so in a relatively painless way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Small Animal Internal Medicine
As a veterinary student this book has been my "bible." It has current information and is a lot more user friendly than the Ettinger texts. There are simplified charts and tables of diagnostic and therapeutic plans and differential diagnoses. The author includes other current opinions on the subject matter as well as his own. I feel this is a great reference book for veterinary professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It Changed My Life
No kidding. I was resistant at first to start the book, I thought that by exploring my sleep I'd make the problem worse. Believe me, the exact opposite is true. "Knowledge is power" has never held so much truth. It took almost no time to feel a definite change in my sleep patterns. I started falling asleep in less than 20 minutes every night. If I woke up during the night I was able to get back to sleep almost instantly. By limiting my time in bed I was able to retrain my brain to think of a bed as a place to sleep again. At first I only got four hours of sleep a night, but now I'm up to as much as six and a half and I'm only into the second week of the program. Please do youself a favor, if you have insomnia, there is no need to suffer any longer. BUY THIS BOOK at any price, peace of mind can be yours again.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must-buy for long-time insomnia sufferers!!
This book is wonderful--I finished it in 2 days! It is a very easy-to-read explanation of the physiology of sleep, why we lose it, and how we can get it back. The techniques Dr. Jacobs describes to stop insomnia are easy to follow (although they do take patience and persistence) and really make sense. And, best of all, this program works!!! I suffered from insomnia for over 16 years, and I never thought I would be free of endless days and nights worrying about sleep. To my amazement, the night following the day I started reading the book, I fell asleep within 10 minutes! Unheard of for me! And, I wasn't even employing any of the techniques suggested in the book yet. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to all insomniacs who suffer from constant anxiety about sleeping as I did, and wish you endless nights of restful sleep!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book really works!
I work the midnight shift as a police sergeant. I had never been able to sleep more than a few hours a day, and the situation had horrible prospects. I bought this book out of desperation, and it has changed my life. I went from 3 or 4 hours of sleep a day to 6 or 8 hours. I feel like a human being again. GOD BLESS YOU DR. JACOBS, AND MR. BENSON! 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!! Bad lipid profile? --this book is for you!
With the common American diet, transfats in our food, you too will develop problems. Do you have high triglycerides, or bad HDL/LDL ratios? Is your LDL (bad) cholesterol creeping higher and higher over the years -to the point at which your doctor is urging cholesterol lower drugs (poison)? It is very possible it is not what you are eating. It is what you are NOT eating.

Sure, you may want to start reading food labels and limit (stop) eating hydrogenated fats, but the information contained in this book -A diet exchanging Omega3 fats (as in unprocessed/ unrefined flaxseed oil) for other fat types, and adding sulfur based proteins to your diet, combined with the other surprising facts and studies -you will probably reduce your chances of developing cancer and heart disease.

If you have developed cancer, the text strongly urges you to not ignore your oncologist's advice, but it gives you additional weapon for your fight against cancer. These weapons, alien to classical medical teaching, usually come in the form of food (plant teas) and lipid (fats) supplements -the flaxseed oil.

This book is a must own (and studied) for everyone who has had a parent or sibling pass on from any form of cancer. And, even though this book is not a "diet" book, it will give the reader a new way to view food. It will help to modify America's behavior toward food. When the information in this book is observed and adhered to, you will loose weight. And because you will have increased your HDL lipid intake, you will not crave the snack foods containing the poisons that will leave your teenage children without your guidance.

Oh... and sorry my fellow Americans... Although this book is not trying to make you a vegetarian (meats are good, they contain high density lipids -HDL-), the book will cause you to rethink the grilling/smoking of meats, nitrite cured meats (luncheon meats, ham, hotdogs, and wursted sausages) -and our beloved barbeque.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-reading for anyone with cancer
I would highly recommend this book to anyone with cancer, or to
anyone wanting to avoid cancer. Many types of cancer treatment
are presented, most of which are intended to change the conditions in the body that allowed the cancer to exist in the first place. Cancer is a symptom of a body that has become out
of balance. If those out-of-balance conditions are not corrected,
the oncologist will be fighting a losing battle. If you have cancer, do yourself a favor and find out how many doctors are treating it, you'll be able to make better-informed choices
regarding your own case.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Simple To Do
Fischer's book, describing the anti-cancer method of Johanna Budwig, is excellent. But the essence of it in application can be stated very simply: Eat low-fat cottage cheese combined with flaxseed oil (sometimes known as linseed oil). It's best to obtain the oil in the REFRIGERATED section of a natural-foods store. The refrigerated form resists rancidity, which naturally happens quickly with flaxseed oil at room temperature, even in a sealed bottle..

My comments are of course not a substitute for reading the book, but I have given you the essence of what to do. The rest are explanatory details that provide enough of a background that you can understand the reasons for the recommendation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent; very thorough and "on-point".
I am a 39 year old mother of four teenagers. In April of 1998 I was diagnosed with Lobular Carcinoma in Situ (LCIS) in my left breast. Boy, was I really scared. My mother died from breast cancer. I was introduced to "Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book" when I went to see my doctor about a lump in my "right" breast that had suddenly appeared six weeks before, it turned out to be benign. It was the then, undetected, accidentally discovered "mass" in my "left" breast that had LCIS! I underwent a fine needle aspiration which led to an excisional biopsy in each breast, and am now fine with no further treatment necessary. At the very on-set, my surgeon recommended Dr. Love's book to help me completely understand LCIS and what to expect during surgery and after. I found Dr. Love's book to be extremly helpful in allaying my fears and dispelling my misconceptions about breast cancer. Her book is very detailed, direct, honest, and compassionate. The chapter on LCIS with its diagrams took me step by step through the process of what was about to happen to me, from surgery, to recovery, to the emotions that I would experience. There were no surprises! My surgeon keeps a copy of Dr. Love's book in his waiting room on the table at all times and always recommends this book to his patients. I now recommend Dr. Love's book to my family, friends, and my other doctors too. Thank you, Dr. Love, for taking away my fear of "not knowing"!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the two best books available
This is an excellent book, and well worth reading. But it's probably the second book to read, behind "The Breast Cancer Survival Manual : A Step-By-Step Guide for the Woman With Newly Diagnosed Cancer" by John Link.

My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer on January 5th of this year. Fortunately, she found it herself, through self-checking, and we live in an area where two of the world's best breast cancer treatment groups are located - the Breast Care Center in Orange, CA and the Memorial Care group in Long Beach. As of yesterday, we were fortunate to discover that, eleven months later, through a combination of surgeries and chemotherapy, the scans that were done last week on the liver, lungs and bones all came back negative, so we hope to have many more years together.

Dr. John Link is the friend of a friend and we consulted with him on treatment. As part of the consultation, he also gave us a copy of his book, which is very readable and understandable. It's particularly good at giving guidance on how to put together a treament program that's right for you as an individual.

The Susan Love book is excellent, particularly as a reference for all the information you want to know when your life or the life of someone you love is at risk. The difference between the two is that the Link book provides a great overview and a guide for getting treatment, and the Love book is the reference for all the stuff that you want to look up when you have a question. And if you're like us, you'll have lots of questions because this is all very complex and it's very difficult to decide on what the best approach will be for your individual situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable in a time of great need
I bought this book because it seemed like a sensible thing to have. A day after it arrived from Amazon, a friend of mine had a lump detected on a mammogram. Four weeks later, she had a mastectomy. Actually I never read the book. I gave it to her before I had a chance. She thanks me for it every time she sees me. She said she had gathered a lot of info, but this book was the most informative and systematic of anything she'd read. She brought it with her to every appointment with her doctors. "I don't know how I could have dealt with this without it." So I'm now about to order a second copy as it's been only eight weeks since the first one arrived. I hope this copy sees much less use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It works, and that's the truth.
My problems started in March. I had a sharp pain that lasted for two weeks and then a general ache that lasted several weeks. After two chiropractors, I went to a Sports Therapy Clinic, and they help resolve the initial problem using cold/heat, ultra-sound, TENS. By mid May I felt fine, and was back lifting weights, as I am a body builder.

In September the ache returned, and I went back to the clinic. After several weeks of traditional therapy, the Orthpedic doctor prescribed massage therapy. The nurse practitioner immediately noticed I had a posture problem, but after a couple of weeks of therapy, I still had an ache.

I stopped the therapy, and began reading several books on the problem. I purchased this book as a last chance, before exploring the possibility I needed surgery. I got the book on a Wednesday, and began doing the exercises over the following weekend.

Now I had been doing all sorts of exercises for several months to no effect. This book proposed extension as compared to flexation exercises. I write this on a Monday. While I can't say I'm healed, I am significantly better.

If you have lost hope, that you can get better, read this book before having surgery. I now believe that I may not need surgery at all, and may be able to resume my life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works with a certain type on back
Generally, the McKenzie method works well with stiff spines that have lost the natural lordosis(lower back curvature) required to minimise pressure on the intervertebral discs. For hypermobile lumbar spines, these exercises may make symptoms worse and stabilsation exercises are more appropriate. A good physiotherapist will assess which category you fit into. The book serves as one of the best educational resources around, and anyone who has "bad posture" after reading it may have misread or misunderstood the text.

I used Robin's technique to help my sciatica when I was in my 20s. Now, 20 years later, a physical therapist asks how I messed up my posture so badly. When she heard that I used Robin's techniques she said it was too bad. That Robin has messed up many people's backs. Now I have severe arthritis between my shoulder blades from having such horrible posture for the past 20 years. Save yourself and get a recommendation to a respected physical therapist instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Problem handled!
Thank you, Dr.Clark! This book should be the bible of every single medical professional and it should be required reading for every single med student. The medical community looks really barbaric when you see the results from the simple handling methods Dr. Clark outlines. For me, I've been plauged with a very serious chemical sensitivity for years; carpet odors, clothes detergents, soaps, paint smell, etc. I've also been experiencing a number of food allergies that made my sentivity worse when I'd eat those foods. A buddy of mine suggested that I do Dr. Clark's "liver flush". What came out of my liver was...well, unbelievable. Dozens of major sized green stones, hundreds and hundreds of small pea sized stones and lots of yellow mush. In the days that followed, the things that bothered me suddenly didn't bother me anymore. I've even been able to eat many of the foods again that heightened my sensitivities like potatoes and dairy. THANK YOU, Dr. Clark!! Problem handled!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will absolutely change your life!
I am a teacher from Indiana and have been "into" self-help for some 22 years, ie: homeopathic medicines, bio-feedback, better nutrition, etc. My father died of Lou Grehrig's Disease (ALS) and my seemingly "very healthy" sister died of cancer at 41, so this prompted me to look constantly for better information and up-to-date self-help ideas. Then 2 1/2 years ago a friend told me about Dr. Clark's ideas and about this book. It has dramatically changed my beliefs and my practices about staying healthy! I immediately built a "zapper" and yes, it sounded too "hokey" to be true. My first true test came the day I came home from school "coming down" with strep throat that was going around at school. My son had a varsity basketball game that night that I couldn't miss, so I "zapped" all the way to the game, 45 miles away. As I went into the gym I realized my symptoms were gone and I honestly felt good! I have not progressed into a cold, flu, or illness for 2 1/2 years since using the zapper. My husband has even become a believer (and he is the ultimate SKEPTIC!) I have also followed Clark's suggestions for removing the amalgam fillings from my teeth (both my father and my sister were completely "filled up" with silver amalgams and I was too!) It's taken me 2 years, and THANK GOD the dentist that Dr. Clark recommends, Dr. Jerome, lives in Columbus, IN, just 35 miles away! I can tell my health constantly improves as the fillings go! Also, Dr. Clark's explanations about parasites make very good sense. I've been keeping a log of the people in our community who have chronic illnesses or have died of cancer, and in practically every single case these people have pets INSIDE the home. It makes me want to share this incredible book with all of these unsuspecting families! Please buy this book to share with your family - it can save your life and theirs!

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for so many
Dr. Legato, the most respected voice in the nascent discipline of gender-specific medicine has written a book that can enlighten so many people. Unlike many books on "women's health" this book has the beauty of being inclusionary. The book is not only relevant to women, but is a helpful read for any husband, son, brother, or health care professional. I do not think that we have really understood what short shrift women have been given in formulating the treatment protocols for medical conditions. Hopefully this book and the science it heralds will help push the medical establishment to realizing that women are not just small men with different reproductive organs but are people with unique responses to drugs, and symptomologies that are necessary knowledge to have before anyone can make an accurate diagnosis. This book should be standard reading for every medical student.

5-0 out of 5 stars A groundbreaking book
Eve's Rib by Marianne Legato, MD is a groundbreaking book. In clear, easily understood language Dr. Legato spells out the myriad ways that gender influences our experience of illness, our response to medications and the expectations/biases of our physicians. She points out that when scientists performed research only on male subjects, and extrapolated their findings to women "they made a tremendous intellectual gaffe." Because women are not just diminutive versions of men. As Dr. Legato makes clear, their bodies and their response to disease are often very different from that of men - and not just in their reproductive organs. The field of gender-based medicine is still in its infancy but already some of the new knowledge that has been discovered is saving lives and improving the health care of both men and women. Just to cite one example, Dr. Legato relates how drug companies are now trying to design medicines to combat abnormal heart rhythms that can actually be caused by drugs that are effective in men, but dangerous for women. She details how every organ system in the body has features that are gender-dependent. And she points up how much knowledge is still to be gained. I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in human biology and in staying healthy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference!
This text offers a straight-forward reference to assist in the management of gyn problems I commonly encounter as a Family Doctor. It goes into great detail about anatomy and physiology of gynecologic problems yet is well-organized for use as a "quick reference". For example, it took less than a minute to find the section on hirsuitism to refresh my memory as to what the initial work-up should consist of.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone involved in basic infertility
This is an incredible book. Speroff is still the king when it comes to infertility. In our OB/Gyn setting we refer to it many times in our treatment of basic infertiltiy and have had great success following the guidelines given by Speroff. It should be on the bookshelf of anyone who treats basic infertility!!

5-0 out of 5 stars DEFINITELY A MUST HAVE
