1-0 out of 5 stars Be careful following this advice
This book is devoted exclusively to the possibility of an adrenal hormone imbalance - but does not consider the possibility of other hormonal imbalances which may have similar symptoms. For example, your lack of energy, immune resistance, and other symptoms might be related to a different hormonal imbalance, such as hyperandrogenism (a symptom of polycystic ovarian syndrom or PCOS) instead of an adrenal imbalance.

Additionally, there is no need to buy vitamins or other special nutritional supplements, if you are willing to make dietary changes, instead. The book's primary purpose beyond educating the reader about adrenal fatigue is to hype the author's own nutritional supplements which can be ordered at http://www.adrenalfatigue.org/ - and they seem to be pricey.

I would highly recommend the book "Hormonal Balance: Understanding Hormones, Weight, and Your Metabolism" instead (ISBN: 0923521690). It is written by Scott Isaacs, M.D., F.A.C.P., F.A.C.E.

Dr. Isaacs' book will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about hormones, possible symptoms of imbalances (including overweight), and how to balance your hormones and maximize your metabolism using simple dietary suggestions - all in a very easy-to-read style.

As a comparison between the two authors, consider their medical credentials. The letters after James L. Wilson's name are: N.D., D.C., Ph.D. Those letters represent: N.D. - Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine, D.C. - Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine, and Ph.D. - Doctorate in Human Nutrition.

Naturopathic doctors treat disease with "natural remedies." Chiropractors manually adjust the body to relieve pain. Nutritionists help design meal plans to provide specific nutrients. In the United States (Dr. Wilson practiced in Canada), Dr. Wilson would probably not be able to prescribe drugs.

The letters after Scott Isaacs' name are: M.D., F.A.C.P., and F.A.C.E. Those letters represent: M.D. - Doctor of Medicine, F.A.C.P. - Fellow of the American College of Physicians, and F.A.C.E. - Fellow, American College of Endocrinology. Endocrinology is the study of the endocrine gland, hormones, and metabolism. The criteria for obtaining the F.A.C.E. designation can be found at: http://www.aace.com/college/criteria.php - the criteria require that the doctor be actively practicing and be a member in good standing for at least one year ... in addition to other requirements. In other words, Dr. Isaacs is a licensed medical doctor, who is actively practicing in the specialty area of endocrinology, which is the study of hormones and metabolism.

Thus, I highly recommend "Hormonal Balance: Understanding Hormones, Weight, and Your Metabolism" instead (ISBN: 0923521690) - or at least read it first. Otherwise you may get incomplete information.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not impressed
I purchased this book as I have symptoms of Addison's Disease although the diagnosis has not yet been made. As I do not fancy spending the rest of my life on synthetic hormones, I was looking for something with more of a natural approach. This book was not it.

Instead, it is a hodge podge of information easily obtained from other self help books, so as stress relieve exercises and basing a diet on the glycemic index. Dr. Wilson maintains a web site devoted to adrenal fatigue, but he does not put the self diagnostic "test" on it, forcing one to buy his book. And, of course, the quickest way to regain health is to purchase nutritional supplements from this web site.

The book repeatedly stresses that the traditional medical community does not recognize adrenal fatigue as a diagnosis, and after reading this book, I can understand why.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly informative and reader-friendly book.
This is an incredibly informative and reader-friendly book about a common debilitating medical condition that goes largely undiagnosed and untreated. ADRENAL FATIGUE: The 21st Century Stress Syndrome is a very empowering work cram-packed with vital information about a condition that very likely affects millions of people. Author Dr. James L. Wilson gives us both the bad news and the good news about this situation. The bad news is how this illness is devastating so many lives, how so many people are being left without hope, and why traditional (allopathic) medicine has failed to recognize or remedy this tragedy. The good news is that this condition can be diagnosed, can be treated, and that there is hope. And Wilson ought to know. With 3 doctorate and two master's degrees all from different disciplines (including Human Nutrition, Naturopathic Medicine, and Bio/Nutrition), Wilson lectures extensively to physicians and is an internationally acknowledged expert on alternative, holistic approaches to health. Supporting Wilson's claims about adrenal fatigue are his 25 years of clinical practice and a depth and breadth of research based on over 2400 scientific references. But don't be daunted by the academic and scientific pedigree of the author; this book is a very easy read'deceptively so for the quality and import of the material.

The book opens with an overview of the function of the adrenals, and how they are prone to chronic fatigue given our hyper-stressed contemporary lifestyles. This is followed by a section on how to tell if you have adrenal fatigue, which includes a questionnaire, several simple at-home diagnostic tests that you can perform yourself, as well as thorough information on the availability (and usefulness) of different laboratory tests. The heart and soul of Wilson's book (and where you get a sense of this doctor's caring 'bedside manner') is the lengthy section on the treatment of adrenal dysfunction, 'Helping Yourself Back to Health.' This is the good news section. It includes detailed information and sage advice on multiple strategies for treatment, such as lifestyle, food, food allergies and sensitivities, dietary supplements, adrenal cell extracts, and replacement hormones. This section concludes with a suggested daily program for adrenal recovery, advice on what to expect on your road back to adrenal health, a very helpful list of questions and answers, and even a trouble-shooting guide if you discover that you still need help. The final section of the book is the most scientific; it details the functions of the adrenal glands. This section (as well as the entire book) is supported by helpful'and often entertaining'illustrations.

I discovered through answering the book's questionnaire and performing two of the self-diagnostic tests that I probably do not suffer from this ailment (although I'll bet that I have numerous friends who do). I do however suffer from migraine headaches, and since much of the book addresses general wellness, I read on with great interest. Most of Dr. Wilson's information and advice on lifestyle, food, food allergies and sensitivities (for me, especially this one), and dietary supplements, is material we can all benefit from'the infirm and the healthy among us alike. For the millions of people who do suffer from adrenal fatigue, there are several aspects of the book that I imagine will be most welcome. Foremost will surely be the confirmation that yes, there is something identifiably wrong with you, and the clear beacon of hope for recovery that his program projects. Especially for those readers who are afflicted with adrenal fatigue but are not quite ready to give up on traditional western medicine, Wilson presents a very balanced picture of what you can and cannot expect from your physician, and plenty of good advice for how to negotiate the interface between traditional and alternative healthcare. Lastly, Dr. Wilson has created a website,[URL], that offers updated information and advice, including information on the availability of products and services sure to be of help to sufferers from adrenal fatigue.

Comprehensive, yet very friendly; empowering and very hopeful, this book is certain to help a lot of people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK
I have used this book throughout 2 years of medical school and it is one of the best dermatology references I have come across. It has also been a quick review for the the path seen with derm since the pictures are so clear and give a good representation of the path. An easy book to skim through before boards as well.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Optometrist's Guide to Dermatology
I have recently found that with this book I not only can diagnose lesions on the face, but also on almost every part of the body. As a result I now save my patients money by diagnosing them myself instead of having to refer them to a specialist. My only complaint about the book is that I feel it uses unnecessary jargon in places.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of Clinical Dermatology
I enjoyed reading this book as a layperson, not having gone to medical school. I have a number of minor skin problems and this book allowed me to differentiate the insignificant ones from the ones I need to pay attention to. I think that this book should be in every household, because a person or parent should know what skin affliction(s) they have and how serious they are before they rush off to the doctor. One thing that should have been elaborated on more is the sub-section on The Nails as Clues to Multiorgan Disease. There are only a few pages of examples of this, yet there are dozens of correlations between abnormal fingernails and systemic disease. The book only gives blantant and graphic examples of serious nail problems and then gives the possible associated underlying disease. It should be expanded to include more "soft sign" nail problems to help doctors make educated guesses about what tests to run. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars In defense of victimhood...
I straddle the fence between faith in allopathic (Western) medicine and a more wholistic approach. So I bought this book eagerly. I have been both intrigued and disappointed.

I appreciate the hard scientific information: how our bodies work, how various procedures and substances affect them, the latest developments in health care. I also appreciated reading that things that I have long considered normal, like pregnancy, are indeed natural processes and not diseases or disabilities. But I didn't appreciate hearing that most medical problems are rooted in dysfunctional emotional states. While I think that there are some conditions that are amenable to a psychotherapeutic approach, I KNOW that the hideous cramps I suffered all through my young girlhood, from age 11 to about 27, were a lot more than merely a function of my ambivalence toward my burgeoning womanhood. And while this isn't my problem, the idea that an enlightened female doctor would tell an infertile woman that her infertility is caused by her own psychological state vis a vis parenthood is absolutely horrifying. As is the idea that grapefruit-sized ovarian cysts can be reduced by changing the way we regard ourselves in a patriarchal society. And the idea that most of our plumbing problems are rooted in our victimhood reverses all the gains in strength and self-confidence we've made in the past 30 years. And the less said about her friend the "medical intuitive," the better!

I recommend this book only to women who are grounded, strong in their sense of self as non-victims, and well-versed enough in medical knowledge to winnow through the junk and glean the good medical information. For the rest, I think it could be quite damaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars at last, a book focused on all aspects of women's health
what a brilliant, sensitive, informed, and thoughtful way to approach health issues particular to women. (Dartmouth Medical School-educated, if I recall correctly) Dr. Northrup truly combines the "Western" with the more "Eastern" approach to health, and she does it in a very balanced way.

this book covers quite a bit of ground: from the special relationship between the menstrual cycle and the lunar cycle to birth/miscarriage to menopause. it is not a book advocating one way or another, but rather explores and considers how a woman's health is affected by many things, both from within and without the body. she also talks about many things a woman can do to improve her health, in accessible and realistic terms.

I found especially useful the chapter on birth stories. Her discussion of labor and delivery allowed me to understand birthing on a deeper level, beyond the "pain," and provided me with more confidence and trust in my body and in the process of giving birth (which I was able to do without any medication). I loved the "wave" metaphor, that each contraction can be experienced as a wave that one dives under (mentally) to avoid being thrashed around.

lastly, this is one of a very few number of books that celebrates women and womanhood. just the title itself tells you so much. i think every woman would do well to have it on her shelf or next to her bed to consult from time to time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for every woman

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Emphasis on Your Diet
The Inflammation Cure by Meggs and Svec, and The Inflammation Syndrome by Challem, both appeared in 2003 and both discuss the role of inflammation in the major diseases of our time, and the things that one can do to limit the risk of diseases related to inflammation. Both books are easy to read. Which to choose? According to the prestigious Library Journal, "While Jack Challem's The Inflammation Syndrome covers similar ground [to the Inflammation Cure], his approach leans toward the faddish and sensationalist, while Meggs takes a more levelheaded approach, weaving the latest research on various diseases into a broad picture." The thing I most prefer about Meggs' book is that it takes a comprehensive approach (including diet) to the things that affect inflammation, rather than spending the whole book just discussing the role of diet as is done in Challem's book. Challem is a health reporter who writes and publishes The Nutrition Reporter newsletter; it is natural that he would stress diet and its consequences. But diseases are caused and controlled by much more than our diet. Meggs is a practicing physician who has a great deal of clinical experience with all aspects of inflammation, and who has woven many real-life cases into the book as illustrations. So, which book should you buy? I have little doubt that you will find The Inflammation Cure by Meggs and Svec more informative and much more useful as a reference on your shelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great explanation of the underlying cause of most disease
Jack Challem writes articles on health for both the general public and scientific publications. He is also co-author of the book Syndrome X.

The Inflammation Syndrome is divided into four parts: an explanation of the connection between inflammation and disease, including causes of inflammation; a 15-step diet plan to prevent and heal inflammation; supplements recommended to combat inflammation; and inflammation and specific diseases. There are multiple quizzes throughout the book on different causes of inflammation to allow you to see all the various ways your lifestyle may be currently promoting, or preventing, inflammation in your body. The book is written in a lively, easy-to-understand style, and the author helpfully provides a detailed table of contents, an index, extensive references, and appendices listing medical tests for inflammation and sources for anti-inflammatory products.

I strongly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about inflammation. Its straightforward, practical suggestions are not horrendously difficult to implement, and the author includes menu plans and recipes to get you started on his eating plan. I find his quizzes especially useful as a kind of lifestyle self-diagnosis.

If you'd like to do additional reading on this subject, another excellent book is The Inflammation Cure: How to Combat the Hidden Factor Behind Heart Disease, Arthritis, Asthma, Diabetes, & Other Diseases, by William Joel Meggs. An outstanding related work is The Body Restoration Plan: Eliminate Chemical Calories and Restore Your Body's Natural Slimming System, by Dr. Paula Baillie-Hamilton. Dr. Baillie-Hamilton doesn't specifically write about inflammation, but provides very valuable insights on the damage done by environmental toxins to the body, which both Meggs and Challem indicate are strongly implicated in causing inflammation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full Coverage
The author does a first-class job of covering not only the
causes of most of our physical ailments, but also of how to
give yourself relief from them.
His theory is that so many of our physical problems come from
what we eat and drink, that we should be able to avoid those
problems by eating right. Not a new theory, but he outlines
all the problems affected by our poor diet, and he documents
scientific and medical studies showing the cause-and-effect,
and then, to cap it all off, he explains how we can specifically
change our diets to start improving our physical health.
He gives details for anyone truly interested in those questions,
and he has a direct and rather plain-speaking way of showing
us what items we need to eliminate from our diets, and then
he happily presents the better, more healthful substitutes.
The author covers everything in the field, and he not only outlines the problems, he shows us the way to a more healthful
life, and he does that in a way we can understand and follow.
For anyone suffering from any health problem, or who is worried
about their future health, this is a must.
Don't miss it. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Verbose and Unorganized for Medical School
The book is disjointed and doesn't do a good job explaining the pathways- especially when you get to the Cranial Nerves. I agree with the other medical student reviewing this book- too verbose and way too confusing for most medical students. I think professors like to believe it's a good book b/c it goes into laborious details. However, neuro is hard enough without. I wouldn't waste my time b/c you will get more confused simply trying to read the book! Stick woth the notes and a concise study guide.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great writing style
This was a great source, not as a formal neuroanatomy text, but for an understanding of clinical cases. It has great illustrations, is extremely well-organized, and the writing is not cluttered with anatomical connections. Lastly, the details of the neurological and mental status exams were helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars a biomedical "Bible"
Dr. McCandless has outdone herself with this one. There's so much "sugar coating" in the autism community, it's refreshing to be treated as a "professional parent" rather than a frail flower. She gives precise info that is being used by 1000's of parents of children with autism every day. This woman and this book has saved my son's outlook on life. She's given me the inspiration to be a better, more informed parent. There is no hand holding here, there is no "get you through it" chapter. There ARE hundreds of pages of vital information that every parent even CONSIDERING biomedical intervention can not be without. Another review complained of "coldness and lack of humanity"... couldn't be further from the truth. She's didn't write the book to be your emotional counselor, she wrote it to help YOUR child and HER grand daughter. There is not one ounce of blame or assumption on any page of this book. If the previous reviewer read that, she was reading from her own emotions, not the words in this book. Dr. McCandless never claims to make your child "un" autistic, she give YOU the info to make better judgement calls in your child's biomedical health. If you pick only one book, pick this one....you will not get any better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parents and Practitioners: The help you are seeking is here.
Please do yourself, your child, or your patients the monumental favor of reading, living, and practicing this book. Children with Starving Brains is an easy to read and comprehensive guide to the painfully complex issues surounding the causation, gastrointestinal pathology, toxicity, and evaluation process of working with children with Austism Spectrum Disorders.

The book then deals extensively with the steps involved in healing the injuries. Dr. McCandless walks the reader through gastrointestinal healing measures, removing heavy metals, restoring proper immune function, and healing the STARVING brain.

You will shake your head in amazement both at the amount of helpful and hopeful information in this book, as well as in absolute awe at the lack of comprehension that most medical, dental, and nursing practitioners have concerning the contemporary state of causation, pathology, and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

I work in a practice that has successfully treated almost 100 children utilizing the principles outlined by Dr. McCandless. All the children have improved to varying degrees. Some have almost totally "recovered", others have shown islands of significant improvement, but ALL have responded positively.

This is good, progressive, modern health care. It is not "alternative" treatment. It is correct treatment to address an acute illness or "insult" to a child's entire brain, body, and self. These interventions have also proven tremendously helpful in our treatment of 200 adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

I especially appeal to my nursing colleagues: READ THIS BOOK. In so many situations, We are the professionals advising mothers about conception and prenatal care; administering immunizations; counseling parents about the use of antibiotics; teaching about dental care; providing care in pediatrician's offices, or in our own pediatric, psychiatric, and general health care practices. If we do not avail ourselves of this information, we are part of the problem, and NOT part of the answer. If we are ignorant of the issues surrounding vulnerbility and causation, we are directly contributing to the epidemic of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

In the future, we will look back on the pioneering work of Jaquelyn McCandless, and her colleagues such as Teresa Binstock, and the innovative professionals associated with DAN! and similar organizations, and know that this was indeed a turning point in the history of medicine and nursing.

We have purchased several dozen copies of this book and have distributed it to parents and professionals, and they have been amazed. Parents intuitively know there is much truth to be found in this book. Professionals who read it with an open mind often come around and start to pay attention to data rather than dogma.

Invest a few hours reading this book. It will change the life of someone you love, or someone with whose care and development you are entrusted.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book with ANSWERS AND WHERE TO START!!
Finally, no doom and gloom. Families with ASD kids - a manual on HOW TO. FINALLY! If you want BIOMEDICAL answers and a clear direction on why and how - this book is for you.

Be sure to provide behavioral and biomedical intervention for your child on the spectrum. Both together make all the difference in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great account of close calls and tense trials with viruses
I think that Richard Preston deserves all five stars for this thrilling book on real life experiences with deadly Ebola Viruses. He took an accumulation of true stories and turned it into an interesting and spellbinding book that hardly seems true. This book is easy to follow, even though the whole is scientific. Preston balanced the scientific language and factuality with an interesting plot and rounded characters as in a fictional book. Preston went into painstaking details to turn the Reston operation and other experiments into lament terms that all readers might comprehend. His magnificent writing style also came through in his account of nurse Mayinga's journey through the city and how catastrophic the event actually might have been. I really enjoyed the amount of effort Preston put forth in describing what Ebola and Marburg actually do to the body, prior to and during death. Although the book was very good, I do think that Richard Preston might have left out the entire fourth part. It had no real influence on the situation at Kitum Cave or what the reader thought of Africa. With all things considered, I strongly advise this book be read by everyone and I will certainly recommend this book to everybody I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entering the "Hot Zone"
It starts with a simple headache. Then maybe you get a nosebleed. After a few days, you know you are extremely sick. The lining of your stomach and the top layer of your tongue literally fall off. Your organs turn into mush. Excessive bleeding from every natural opening in your body occurs. And since your blood can't clot, the bleeding won't stop. Black vomit mixed with blood gushes from your mouth. Then, you die painfully with a mask-like expression on your face.

This doesn't even sound like it could exist, does it? Well it does. It is death by a virus known as Ebola. It is especially contagious in monkeys and can jump species over to humans.

The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston, describes outbreaks of this and other "hot" viruses in locations around the world, including a city near Washington, D.C. Virus experts in the Army need to unravel the Ebola mystery and try to protect the public from this vicious disease.

Preston has taken a true story and unveiled its horror. I couldn't believe how descriptive his writing is. If you want to read a true modern day thriller, then this is an awesome pick. I highly recommend it and am looking forward to reading more from Richard Preston.

After months of stuffy old British classics we read THE HOT ZONE by Richard Preston in my sophomore English class. What a breath of fresh air! The book reads like a novel, but is full of fascinating information about ebola. Whether you're a biology buff or just want a good beach read, this is a great book. I highly recommend this(...) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
Clarks book gives what she claims is a cure for cancer. However, the book must be read carefully to make sure that one is getting the full meaning of what she is saying. Her approach is a herbal and bioelectric one. But this is not new. After reading the mixed reviews all I can say is that one is better off experimenting himself. Some criticize this book claiming that if such a cure were found Clark would be lauded by the world and the medical community. This is false and a fallacy from the argument of authority. One must go by evidence and nothing else. Many geniuses and note worthy discoveries have been ignored, without investigation. The history of science is full of examples. The author deserves to be heard, since in the search for truth nothing can be discarded, but investigated as completely as possible. Sadly, this is not the case with much of scientific research. One must investigate things himself and Dr. Clark gives people the oppurtunity to do so.

4-0 out of 5 stars Think outside the square
Yes, I have read the book. No, I have not had cancer - simply an interest in herbal medicine & simple therapies that can be easily and cheaply applied by those who love someone who is suffering.

People have said that the names in case studies have been changed so it is difficult to follow up (insinuating perhaps these 'case studies' are not real people?). I regard this complaint as minor - what book with case studies DOESN'T change the names to protect privacy?

I read the book & found it very interesting - I guess I wonder what would be found out if the regular researchers (eg unis etc) spent only 1/20 of the amount they spend on developing new technology in simply researching (with an open mind) what Hulda proposes. But just imagine if it was found that what she says is true! They would all be out of a job! No more research needed - just the ability to encourage people to take responsibility for their own health by following some simple steps.
My thoughts were - the causes really do seem plausible enough. And I know that if I were diagnosed with cancer I would be more than willing to spend a few dollars on some herbs to follow the program before proceeding with western hit or miss approaches. I guess when you read a testimony of someone who says "I" or "My mother" had cancer, followed the program & got well... what more can you say? Two or three witnesses should be listened to - usually ordinary people, they have nothing to gain or lose from their testimony - no profit, no glory. Can you say the same for others who speak against Hulda's findings?

4-0 out of 5 stars judge the book for yourself
I thought I would comment on this book after reading the dismisals of it as a quacky hoax. True, Dr. Clark makes very strong claims that sound weird to the western mind that is used to alopathic medicine ruling our lives, but I think that if you're in a desparate situation and 'normal' medical procedures aren't helping you, you'd be a little dumb to not at least be willing to learn about other lines of thought. When I first started reading Dr. Hulda's theories, I also thought she was just paranoid and trying to tell you that you everything was dangerous. But when you have no other alternatives, you start to be willing to try things you once thought were ridiculous. I can, however, affirm the validity of many of her ideas that resonate with common-knowledge nutrition and herbology. Also, bioelectric testing is definitely not her idea-- it's being widely practiced in Europe and I have witnessed its reliability on myself. A natropathic doctor used it to correctly diagnose and then treat various viruses that I had that were not appearing in normal bloodwork (as often is the case) and symptoms cleared up. All this to say, don't write off something that sounds strange without being open-minded enough to try it yourself. Notice that the reviewers who had loads of negative things to say didn't say they'd actually tried these things themselves. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific proof for reversing heart disease
While we appreciate that Mr. Bayan took the time to comment on our work, we are concerned that inaccurate statements he has made may discourage some people from making changes in diet and lifestyle that we have proven to be lifesaving.

For the past 24 years, the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine have conducted research scientifically proving, for the first time, that the progression of even severe coronary heart disease can begin to reverse by making comprehensive changes in diet and lifestyle, without drugs or surgery. These studies have been published in leading peer-reviewed journals such as the Journal of the AMA, The Lancet, the American Journal of Cardiology, New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, and others.

Mr. Bayan alleges that the diet we have proven to be so beneficial is "dangerous" for some patients because both HDL and LDL may decrease and triglycerides may increase. HDL and triglycerides are only potential risk factors for heart disease, they are not diseases. When we measured the actual severity of heart disease using state-of-the-art measures such as computer-analyzed coronary arteriography and cardiac PET scans, patients showed continued improvement over time, even in patients like Mr. Bayan whose HDL decreased or triglycerides increased. Also, cardiac events were 2.5 times lower in the group who followed the program compared to the control group who made more moderate changes in diet (30% fat, 200 mg cholesterol). [reference: JAMA. 1998;280:2001-2007.] Clearly, lowering HDL by changing diet did not harm these patients. LDL cholesterol decreased by an average of almost 40% during the first year, and none of the patients who adhered to the diet showed an increase in LDL.

As Dr. Connor wrote in the New England Journal of Medicine, "There are no data showing that the physiologic reduction of HDL cholesterol levels with a low-fat diet is detrimental. Diet-induced lowering of HDL cholesterol does not confer the same risk of atherosclerosis as do low HDL cholesterol levels in Americans consuming a high-fat diet." [ref: N Engl J Med. 1997;337(8).]

It is true that one can eat an unhealthful low-fat diet if it is high in simple carbohydrates such as sugar, white flour, alcohol, and many popular fat-free desserts. Such a diet may cause a shift to the more harmful pattern B LDL subclass that Mr. Bayan mentions.

But this is not the diet we recommend for reversing heart disease. Other studies have shown that a diet high in fruits, vegetables, grains, beans, and other complex carbohydrates (which is the diet we recommend) actually cause a shift AWAY from the pattern B LDL subclass to more beneficial patterns [ref: Kenney JJ, et al. Very-low-fat diets do not necessarily promote small, dense LDL particles. American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. 1999;70(3):423-5.]

Patients whose triglycerides increase are counseled to be even more mindful in reducing their intake of simple carbohydrates and increasing their exercise. Also, for many years we have recommended that patients take 3 grams/day of fish oil, which also helps to lower triglycerides. In the Multicenter Lifestyle Demonstration Project, we found that triglyceride levels, which initially increased slightly but not significantly, then fell significantly in years two and three. [ref: American Journal of Cardiology. 1998;82:72T-76T.] Almost 80% of people who were eligible for bypass surgery or angioplasty were able to safely avoid it by making these diet and lifestyle changes instead.

We respect the work of Dr. Robert Superko and often refer patients to his lipid laboratory for testing. Again, we have found that patients with small dense LDL also show reversal of heart disease on the program recommend.

The program that we recommend includes a reversal diet for those with heart disease and the prevention diet for others. The prevention diet may be higher in fat and cholesterol than the reversal diet and is tailored to the needs of the individual rather than offering one diet for everyone. The prevention diet may include some oils, fish and other animal products for some people.

Switching from saturated fats to monosaturated fats is better, but for reversing heart disease or lowering cholesterol it is better to avoid all oils other than fish oils. Olive oil is 100% total fat and 14% saturated fat. The more olive oil you consume, the more saturated fat you consume, the higher your plasma cholesterol. The studies showing that olive oil lowers cholesterol are only when substituted in equal amounts for butter or oils that are higher in saturated fat. Also, olive oil has almost none of the beneficial omega-3 fatty acids.

The bottom line is this: patients in our studies with severe heart disease reported a 91% reduction in angina (chest pain) within one month, and most became pain-free. They not only felt better, they were better. We measured improved blood flow within one month as measured by thallium scans and radionuclide ventriculograms, reversal of coronary artery blockages (atherosclerosis) within one year, even more reversal after five years, and 2.5 times fewer cardiac events (e.g., heart attacks). It works.

5-0 out of 5 stars No Program is 100% effective.
Dr. Ornish's program just like any other program or treatment out there is not 100% effective in reversing or preveting heart disease. The truth is that it works. For a few people that might develop the so called subclass B LDL phenomenon it is adivisable to supplement with other treatment modalities such as low dose cholesterol lowering drugs(please consult your cardiologist). But in my view it would be utterly dangerous to abandon this program just because of the B LDL controversy. For those with family history and other risk factors the diet and life style changes recommended in this book with few individualised modifications may well make the difference between long life and sudden death.

Disregard the negative view of some self-serving individuals hoping to promote their unpopular books and sundry unproven formulae. It is downright irresponsible for anyone to cite some stupid studies that has proven that vegan women die more from heart disease than meat eaters. If you want to make more sense out of Dr. Ornish's program purchase the book "Fit For Life" by Harvey & Marilyn Diamond.

Just remember that anything that would lower your risk of dying from any disease by even 1 percentage point is worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked for me!!!
When my doctor suggested cholesterol lowering drugs last year, I decided that 34years old was too soon to start taking drugs. My cholesterol was 266 (& that's after cutting out most red meat and pork fat -and no hamburgers). I was motivated to try to improve the health of my arteries and heart. I want to be around for my ten year old's retirement party!

I followed Dr Ornish's diet program for 6 month's then had my cholesterol levels tested again. Everything improved: cholesterol down to 210, triglycerides went from 389 to 217 and my ratio improved 24%. I never skipped a meal. I never went hungry. Secondary benefit: I lost 14 pounds and two inches around my waist without trying. I did not exercise enough so I am trying to increase my exercise now. I probably exercised an average of once a week.

By the way, Dr Ornish included a chart that demanded that you eat at least a certain amount of fat in your daily diet. I liked that the book is filled with studies by major US universities. This is not 600 pages of rambling prose but a how to book to reverse heart disease. If you want someone to hold your hand, call your Mom. If you want a "How to Reverse Your Heart Disease" manual, buy this book. ... Stop reading reviews and buy, read and try it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The product of a three year research project
A Brief History Of Disease, Science & Medicine is the product of Dr. Michael Kennedy's three year research project to write a book that would fill the unfortunate gaps in most medical student's educational curriculums, and also be of considerable value for the non-specialist general reader seeking a clearer understanding of the long history behind what we commonly recognize as the history of medical development from superstition to science. The first eight chapters aptly cover the history of early medicine and science described in more detail than typical medical history. Then Dr. Kennedy goes on to cover the discovery of anesthesia and antisepsis, the development of modern medicine and surgery, and concludes with a history of medical economics (including the origin of medical malpractice litigation). A Brief History Of Disease, Science & Medicine is enthusiastically recommended any and all for personal, professional, academic, and community library History of Medicine reference collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and highly informative
This fascinating book is an up-to-date history of medicine and medical science. The book begins with a fascinating look at medicine and diseases from prehistoric times to the early nineteenth century, when so little of such things were truly understood. Then, the pace of the book picks up, when the speed of breakthroughs in medical understanding and technology began to simply explode. And then, the final, more modern, chapters spread out, covering everything from DNA and anesthesia to the economics of medicine.

This book was originally designed with medical students and young physicians in mind, but it is no dry textbook. Instead, this book is a fascinating read, covering a whole lot of subjects, without becoming boring. What I especially liked was that the author obviously deeply understands non-Western medicine, and he made sure to include in it in the book. This book is a great read with lots of fascinating information (for example: did you know that King Henry VIII of England probably suffered from syphilis, and that the disease probably had a major role in history?). Overall, I found this to be a fascinating and highly informative book, and I highly recommend it to you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting look into the history of medicine - good and bad
Personally I always enjoy a historical book that actually discusses history and not some surgically altered history that only reports the things that went right. That is what you get with "A Brief History of Disease, Science & Medicine". Not only do you read about the great advances in medicine but also about the mistakes that were made along the way. Although the book was written with the first year medical student in mind it is easy enough to read and understand by those with only a passing knowledge of basic first aid. Perhaps one sentence from the Forward best describes the writing style - "...it has been written to be read, rather than studied."

Dr. Kennedy states that this book was not widely accepted by the academic presses and so was published independently. It is fairly obvious that one of the reasons this might be the case is his candid examination of the history of medicine. In an age when most practitioners of the medical profession seem to feel that they have perfect knowledge, Dr. Kennedy's book shows that they have often been wrong with tragic results. Take for instance the case of Ignaz Semmelweiss who worked in a hospital where there was a twenty-nine percent mortality rate for women giving birth. Through experimentation and deduction he came to believe that washing your hands between patients and after autopsies would cause this rate to drop. He ordered that hand washing would be done between patients and the rate of death dropped drastically. However, since he had not reason why it worked it was resisted, he eventually resigned (other historians have noted that he was forced to resign) and the doctors returned to their old habits and the old mortality rate. After all it made no sense to them that something they could not see could make any difference. Many people will immediately see the similarities between things like this and modern attitude of medical science as related to alternative therapies - if we don't yet understand how it works then it must not work. Most medical history texts are severely sanitized to keep such historical errors out. So, it is really no surprise that this book, which portrays history as it was, from many primary sources, is not the most popular one among the medical establishment.

Personally, I enjoyed the book but I am one of those who enjoys history from a viewpoint of accuracy - warts and all. Still you should be prepared to have some of your history that you learned in high school discredited. I remember learning that Louis Pasteur invented innoculations to prevent disease in the later 1800's, but the fact is that Charles Maitland and others were doing it in the 1700's. "A Brief History of Disease, Science and Medicine" is a recommended read for anyone interested in the history and progression of medicine. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pathophysiology Made Clear
This is an outstanding textbook of the subject of pathophysiology. This can be, and is, a difficult subject to grasp the concepts of but this book makes it easier to learn. Gone are the days of boring pictures that don't really help the learning process. There is a good combination of artwork and photographs to illustrate what the text is saying. I am a self-taught student in this field and this book has helped me gain a good understanding of the topic.

The chapters all begin relatively basic but move into the areas of in depth knowledge. There are a number of charts and graphs that basically sum up what a portion of a chapter is talking about. It is interesting how this book can be used as a resource text and as an initial learning tool. Whether this book is being used for self study or for a course it is important for the student to have a foundation in anatomy and physiology so they can understand the content better.

I really like how this book is very applicable to those who provide emergency medical care. I highly recommend this book to those who are new to the subject of pathophysiology because if its ease to use, its quality and quantity of content. I have benefitted a great deal from this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Lifelong Investment
McCance and Huether's Pathophysiology book is a lifelong investment. I bought it for a pathophys. class and continue to use it long after the class is over. It is thorough and easy to understand. Great illustrations and diagrams. I would recommend it to anyone in the healthcare field.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book can save your life
I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes last month. My family physician gave me a prescription for oral medication and referred me to a diabetes counselor, who recommended the standard ADA diet. I didn't question this, but went to the grocery store and bought a bulging cartload of low-fat food. However, I was also given a glucometer and began testing my blood 6-8 times a day -- not because I was told to do so, but mostly out of curiosity. I immediately noticed that if I ate bread, cereal, fruit, etc., my blood sugar would rise substantially. It seemed abundantly clear, then, that it was best for me NOT to eat those foods. I modified my diet according to the changes I could plainly see in my own blood sugar, keeping my carb intake under 10 or so grams per meal. As an experiment, I also stopped taking my glucophage, just because it seemed that I was getting better results from dietary changes and exercise than I was from the medication. My average blood sugars continued to decline even without the drugs.

Soon after I started this self-made diet plan, a friend recommended Dr. Bernstein's book. I was amazed to see that his suggestions almost perfectly reflected what I had discovered on my own. The more I read the book, the more convinced I became that his system is the only thing that will work for me. There's also no doubt in my mind that it's the only way to try to undo existing damage and reverse the progressive nature of my disease.

The book is clear, detailed, and well-written. The chapters that describe the physiology of diabetes are especially thorough and well done. It's obvious Dr. Bernstein has a personal, intense interest in both the subject and in his patients. He's not just in it for a buck. I recommend this book to everyone with diabetes as well as to the friends and relatives who love them. It will definitely change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my husband's life!!!
My husband was a somewhat overweight insulin-dependent diabetic for many, many years. Even with twice-daily insulin shots, he often had blood sugar numbers over 200. Then, by pure good fortune, he happened to meet the ghost writer of this book and discussed the biology of diabetes with him in great detail. Since beginning this very rigorous plan almost two years ago, he has completely stopped taking insulin! Recent blood and urine work-ups for a physical exam showed no signs of diabetes at all! His diabetes had gotten so bad that his feet still give him a lot of trouble, but, given time, even that is expected to improve. Bruce hates this diet--but, because he believes he'd be a blind amputee without it--or even a dead man by now--he loves it and follows it to the letter. His doctors are now also converts and have purchased their own copies of this book. Don't listen to the ADA; they say diabetics can eat moderate amounts of carbohydrates, but that is just plain wrong. Dr. Bernstein makes his logic crystal clear, and my husband is proof that he's right!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information from a dedicated individual
I'm a 41 year old male and have recently been diagnosed with pre-diabetes (whatever it is called), with diabetes running in the family, so to get up to speed on the subject I ordered a pile of books (12 of them) off Amazon including this one. I've been through them all and this one I found the best in its explanations of the various aspects of the condition, the various treatments, and many other relevant details.

Dr Bernstein was an engineer with type 1 diabetes and became a doctor to be able to help others with his experiences and findings; he conveys intimate and detailed knowledge about the condition and all its aspects, and generally impresses with the information he provides.

The diet is not exactly appetising plus its very time consuming to have to calculate food details all the time I guess (not having tried it and not hoping to have to try it for awhile), however I will always keep this book in my bookcase "just in case" - if I do get diabetes and complications occur, I will grab this book and give it a shot. Because it is more believable than most of the other stuff out there, for the reason that it comes from someone who found out all of this himself, then became living proof of his own theory.

I would buy this book initially for the descriptions of how diabetes works, how the treatments work and what the various dangers are, exercises provided, etc. - it is well worth its cost for this information alone. Secondly, the diet may come in handy in case of complications etc. and if other treatments don't work.

And Dr Bernstein does indeed answer the phone himself as another writer also mentioned - I called just before opening hours and sure enough got to talk to the man himself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb! Best recent book I've bought on related subject
Kowalski deserves 10 stars!

He covers it all -- cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease -- & what to do about it all! And, reading this book feels like an intense talk with an intelligent friend who knows it all from his heart attacks in his 40s -- & who doesn't want me to have to go through the same thing!

After a heart procedure 6 1/2 weeks ago (an angiogram to assess progression of a heart-valve problem), I unexpectedly found myself undergoing an angioplasty, with stent placement -- & resultant heart attack & hospitalization! What a shock!

Two days later, I ordered online recent books from famous research institutes/hospitals on these subjects & read them all thoroughly. However, I don't even glance at those others any more. Kowalski's concise, packed, incredibly-well-researched & documented book of studies/trials/clinical evidence, etc. -- added to his personal research on himself as he went through the process of healing himself -- inspires confidence in his conclusions & recommendations! My copy is highlighted in several colors, with pages turned down to the point where my book is twice as thick!

I'm following his recommendations to the letter -- niacin, pantethine, taking phytosterols when occasionally I eat some cholesterol foods, walking, stress reduction, etc.

This book provides the focus for my new, body-enhancing life! I live by it -- doing everything Kowalski recommends, including ordering the recommended nutrients [which he doesn't profit from!]. It's all working, & I have no doubt that putting all of this information into practice is helping to save my life!

And, today I'm ordering copies for relatives I care about . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable, essential and fun to read
My dad had a triple-heart bypass at age 44. He bought the original "8 Week Cholesterol Cure" back in the early 80s and has been surprisingly healthy ever since. This year (2004) I was diagnosed with hyper-cholesterolemia. However, my cardiologist has said my arteries are clear of any plaque or deposits. Why? Because I read Dad's book about 20 years back and followed a lot of Robert Kowalski's advice regarding diet, excercise, supplements and medical testing. I'll probably never have a bypass or heart attack thanks to this book.

I bought the "New 8-Week Cholesterol Cure" and it's even better. All the latest research is right there, in an easily readable form. Kowalski has a good sense of humor, which is essential when you're talking about such a grim subject. His advice is clear and quite easy to follow. He even tells you what doesn't work, which surprised me. (For example, there's really no good evidence that garlic does much for cholesterol or heart health.)

I also bought 4 other books on heart health and cholesterol, but this is by far the best. I've marked up pages, bought copies for relatives and signed up for Kowalski's newsletter. This is heart health advice you and your family can live with for a looong time. (Thanks Dad!)

-Yours, The Niacin Queen

5-0 out of 5 stars The Baby Boomer's Survival Manual- A "Must Have" Book
As the largest block of Americans approaches the ranks of senior status, we face an economy that is incapable of taking care of us we become feeble incompetent old people, especially when there will be more people over the age of 50 in the USA than under the age of 50 by the year 2025!! We owe it to ourselves and our children to be strong, healthy, vital seniors capable of thinking for ourselves, strong enough to carry our own groceries, healthy enough to function independently and if we need to, continue to work well past 65 to support ourselves. The only way to do this is with the Prevention of Disease, not by treating the symptoms of degenerative diseases after they occur. This comprehensive text is extremely valuable for anyone interested in saving their own future, from the medical person to the average consumer of nutritional products.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disease Prevention and Treatment
As a registered nurse and also a diabetic, I found the Fourth Edition to
contain an impressive amount of helpful information. I not only read the
chapter on Diabetes, but I also read several other chapters that are related
to health conditions that both my husband and I experience. I was very
impressed by the fact that the information was presented in a professional
manner and was substantiated by numerous recent scientific studies to refer
to for more specific information about the methods used and the findings
described. I plan to implement some of the information given in the Diabetes
chapter and to discuss other issues that might apply to my condition with my
doctor during my next visit. I have no reservations about encouraging
everyone to read the information in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic style, "user friendly" resource
Now in an updated and expanded fourth edition, Disease Prevention And Treatment from the Life Extension Foundation is an exhaustive, 1535-page encyclopedic style, "user friendly" resource compiling information drawn from research studies and the experiences of physicians worldwide. The "reader friendly" entries range from allergies, to thyroid disease, to scientific protocols that integrate mainstream and alternative medicine. Disease Prevention And Treatment is an impressive and strongly recommended resource for medical students, medical practitioners, and the non-professional general reader in need of quick and authoritative medical reference. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Read This Book!
GREAT BOOK! The Cortisol Connection can do a great deal to help you understand WHY cortisol-control is good for your long-term health, but also HOW to approach cortisol-control using diet and lifestyle. It makes a complicated topic easy to understand. As a nutritionist, I know that people who suffer from chronic stress often are also suffering from lifestyle related diseases (obseity, diabetes, hypertension, depession, and osteoporosis) which now may be linked to the detrimental effects of unhealthy cortisol levels. The Cortisol Connection gives details on diets, exercise and supplements that have been shown to control cortisol levels and promote optimal health (Dr. Talbott's SENSE program). If you have stress, you need this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good stress info -- but all solutions are food supplements
Stress is bad for you. We all knew that, but Shawn Talbott explains some of the biochemistry of stress in layman's terms. After reading The Cortisol Connection, you will know WHY chronic stress is bad and what it's likely to do to you.

Much of this has been covered better in other books about stress, such as Robert Sapolsky's Why Zebras Don't Get Ulcers. What's new about Cortisol Connection is the strong evidence that stress makes you gain weight. It puts on fat and makes your cells resistant to insulin, which puts you at risk for diabetes.

I'm very interested in this, because I'm currently researching a new book called The Politics of Diabetes. (I should also admit that Hunter House, publisher of Cortisol Connection, also published my first book, The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness.) I found Talbott's work helpful.

What I did not find, though, was many good ideas for what to DO about stress. He mentions stress reduction and exercise, but he seems to believe these are not realistic goals for most of us in our fast-paced society. Nearly all his recommendations are for food supplements - vitamins, herbs, minerals, amino acids - over 50 in all. And he really doesn't prioritize among them. I still have no idea where to start with these supplements, which ones have strong supporting evidence and which don't.

I also found his reference list really aggravating. I like to check references, both to learn more and to confirm that the author is playing straight with the facts. Talbott combines all the references for the first five chapters (six pages of references) into one long list, without numbers. So there's no way to tell which reference goes with which paragraph or claim in the book. The supplements actually have many more references than the information on stress does.

So if you are inclined to seek health through supplements, this may be the stress book for you. If you don't like investigating supplement claims and prowling around health food stores, you can still get some good information about stress here, but that's about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read the book before you "review" it
In response the "review" of my book my myrtlemoon from Tennessee, the writer acknowledges having NOT read the book. There is NO mention in the Cortisol Connection of ANY brand of dietary supplement. The book does not promote any product or any brand and the many cortisol control products on the market came out MANY months after publication of the Cortisol Connection book. The book, in fact, presents a very easy to follow and research-proven approach to controlling cortisol for weight loss and long-term health (diet + exercise + cortisol control).

Just wanted to set the record straight... ... Read more

A More Excellent Way has affected my life profoundly. Most of all, it has made the Bible come alive for me again, and helped me to really believe God for my healing. It is a very encouraging book. The author maintains that 80% of all illnesses have spiritual roots; if you restrict this to chronic illnesses, which allopathic medicine has little successs with, I would agree with him.

The book seems like it is a long transcription of a seminar that the author, a pastor, gives, and although it seems to ramble at times, I found everything in it useful and practical. I was greatly inspired by his digressions. He makes it clear that his very successful ministry (especially to people with MCS/EI) is in its embryonic stage, and that there is much more to learn in this area. He is very honest and straightforward.

The whole book is very Bible-based. It answers the question, "What if everything in the Bible WERE really true and for today, especially about healing?"...I know that might sound like it's a "name it and claim it" book (but it's not) or like it's a book that puts people down who get prayer but don't get instantly healed (but it's not). Instead it's a book that deals with WHY people might not be healed and practically WHAT they can do from a spiritual perspective. I do not feel condemned or put down because I have not yet been fully healed; instead I feel excited about the spiritual healing the Lord is doing and will continue to do...and so at peace about the physical manifestations and the symptoms and the pain I currently have. I look so forward to continuing to follow the healing steps of the "walk out" and to the work that the Lord is doing in my life because of this book.

The end of the book is filled with pages of testimonies (including very detailed MCS/EI testimonies) that are incredibly uplifting, even for people without this particular illness.

If you are ill, discouraged because you've received prayer but are not yet healed, need encouragement or uplifting, I strongly recommend this book. It will bless you and is well worth the money. I would suggest buying it new or in "like new" condition if you could afford it at all because it is a book you will want to refer to often and keep forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Contains Really Needed Information
My life has been exceedingly blessed and changed by the information in this book. I was sick for 20 years with many incurable diseases and very very miserable. I had researched many different types of christian therapies and alternative medicines to no avail. When I applied the information here i started to get better and better. I can now say without a doubt that i no longer have those diseases or problems that always plagued me. I have a life that is not ruled by doctors, medical tests and pills. The Lord has blessed me so very much.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Brand New Heart!!!
I have personally seen many people healed at Pleasant Valley Church of all sorts of so-called incurable diseases. I myself was totally healed of heart problems, which is medically documented.

Actually I was experiencing severe heart problems while speaking to Pastor Henry Wright July 3rd 2001 about 9:30 pm when I suddenly "lost my pulse" and fell to the ground in front of him. My doctor was with me at the time, as well as a nurse. There were still about 40 people present who are witnesses to this, as the church service had just ended.

Instead of calling 9-1-1, Pastor called on God. He commanded a spirit of death to leave my body in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, and, instantly, my heart began to beat again! I was totally healed.

Not only did I return to the living, but I am also stronger than I ever was before all this happened! I no longer take any medicine since that time and all my health problems were once and for all healed.

Praise be to my God.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Detox Book is one of the best health books I have read.
The Detox Book by Bruce Fife, N.D., is one of the best health books I have ever read, and my hobby is reading health and wellness material. The knowledge and understanding I gained was extremely helpful in my quest for better health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book with one tiny exception...
The book is the best health book I've ever read. The tiny exception is, I showed it to my friend who's got a ph.D. in biochemistry. He read it and said "the book is right on, with the exception of "single organ" cleans (liver detox, etc.). His feeling is that you don't target organs with a detox, the entire system is affected (much the same way you can't "spot" remove fat!)

Highly recommended, regardless!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, eye opening experience
I love this book. I have read it a couple of times. I couldn't believe what I learned. It really made me look at the way I live my life, was raised, and the way I want to raise my children. The fasting program was right on. I was so glad that he mentioned the healing effects that happen to the body and not to give up. I especially liked the chapter on juicing, which I have made my new hobby. I'm so glad that the book I happened to buy on accident, turned out to be my favorite natural health book. I think anyone who is interested in healing their body naturally, or just wants to feel better than ever, this is your book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
Finally, a great nonfiction book written for children. It keeps ones interest all the way through, and is a great companion with "Fever 1793."

5-0 out of 5 stars An Intense and interesting read
Jim Murphy amazes, educates and horrifies with his wonderful Siebert Award winning and Newberry Honor Book, AN AMERICAN PLAGUE. Murphy deftly describes the political, social, medical and economic conditions that allowed the yellow fever epidemic to devastate Philadelphia in the 1790s in a way that is truly terrifying but nonetheless intriguing.
I couldn't put it down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shining example of nonfiction for young people
Jim Murphy's award winning book is a wonderful example of literary nonfiction for young people that's every bit as compelling and well-researched as that for adults. Other recent noteworthy books are Candace Fleming's innovative Ben Franklin's Almanac, Russell Freedman's In Defense of Liberty, and Deborah Hopkinson's fascinating book on immigrants in New York City, SHUTTING OUT THE SKY. ...
