5-0 out of 5 stars Precision movement matters!
Having harrassed the author for close to four years I am pleased to say that this text represents what might best described an a "hinge in history". I agree that the concepts and examination items might be challenging for those used to a "cookbook" strategy but I am sure Shirley will agree that she did NOT invent anatomy or kinesiology! Systematic clinical examination, identifying movement deviations from mechanical precision and optimising efficient movement patterns are not large leaps of logic. Major car manufacturers and airlines have been doing this for years; analyse patterns of wear and tear on components and see what lasts the longest! However, humans in their comfortable/familiar patterns don't invest in the valid and rational practice of prevention and damage analysis. I know UK colleagues will take the path of least resistance when trying out the exam items within this book and say "Well it doesn't predict chronicity!" or "What about psychosocial factors?". To them and the pain biology fanatics I say this...when viruses, bacteria, trauma, genetics and family relationships have been analysed, what are the three primary drivers of nociception? Bogduk delineated the mechanical deformation model of nociception; Sahrmann has now thrown down the gauntlet with the movement paradigm to support or negate. Roll up your sleeves, break a sweat and join those of us liberated from surreal Southern Hemisphere skeleton pushing. Active rehabilitation with empiricism, determinism and a healthy cynicism! This text gives content and not just theory/process models - try telling a student that clinical reasoning is a valid model when they don't know what to look for!

5-0 out of 5 stars Long awaited text for expert practice
Physical therapists like myself have been waiting for a text from the author for over 10 years. Definitely a text for someone well versed in the anatomy and mechaincs of the musculoskeletal system. This text is written in clear categories and deals with problems in three general areas. It takes effort and analytic thinking to understand the myriad of motions listed in the text. A CD with actual demonstrations would help immensely in seeing all the factors the author is illustrating. The introduction covers very complex ideas made as simple as possible by the author. I would recommend this text for any movement specialist but I would caveat my recommendation with the warning that hard work is needed to really grasp the techniques listed in this text. This author is saying things that need to be learned by movement specialists and only can be applied by an expert. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars From a Mom - This Works!
I am mom to a quite adorable 4 year-old with Asperger/Autism/HFA....every year a different label..but by any other name, he's still as sweet. I wanted to pour out all the help I could give him. I devoured hosts of books on all the labels. Every book was an eye-opening, informative, helpful tool along our journey, but Dr. Gutsteins book was the journey itself! The journey my son must embark on to be a participant in the human relational experience and not just an observer. To loose himself in the shared giggles of a pal. To be stirred inside by a knowing smile or glance. To embrace the wonderment, spontaneity and magic of play. To see himself through the eyes of others. To walk in step with a friend. This is what my son was missing. It is elusive, hard to grasp or put into words. I knew my son needed something yet to be addressed by any of the books I had read or professionals I had consulted. It was as if Dr. Gutsteins book quenched an aching thirst. The book is a practical treatment approach called RDI. Do not be misled by the simplicity of the treatment methods. The "games" are simple, but powerful! Do not skim the book or skip through the chapters, read it, read it again. ...After reading the book, my son became a patient at the Connections Center. The RDI treatment has already unlocked a door to a lifetime of relational joy for my son. He has come so far in an amazingly short time. We will continue our journey and I hope many others will discover their journey as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solving the relationship puzzle
Gutstein's book has far reaching social value beyond that of Autism. I think of his work RDI as soul building, something our society desperately needs. Gutstein takes apart the developmental elements of social/personal connection without losing the sense of mystery that there is in relationships. ie. He analyses the kiss without reducing it to a technicality. Although steps are given once you have grasped the content of the book there is room for the individuals creativity and intuition to take the material and run with it.
I feel strongly that this book should be required reading for all psych, forensic and Social work students as it goes to the core of our ability to relate to other individuals and society.

5-0 out of 5 stars Father of grateful Houston patient
Even having lived with the first reviewer from the day of his birth, I did not fully understand this disorder until I met Steve and then read this book. It is almost impossible for the non-AS person to grasp what these people cannot do. That is because the rest of the world does effortlesly as an integral part of their being what AS people cannot even grasp. But they can! This book shows that it can be done. AS never goes away, but life can become more than just tolerable for AS people, they can experience the joy of fully being alive. All it takes is a great psychologist, with great insight. Here are his many stories and how he gets it done! A must for those with AS and their loved ones. A good idea for the rest of us so that we might understand what it means to be human. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It Gave Me Back My Life
Dr Wilson's book and a Doctor that listened to me gave me back my life. About 4 years ago I sold my business because I was to sick to continue. I decided I needed to go on a seach to find out what was wrong with me. My health was at the point that I thought I was dying and all the doctors I went to couldn't figure out what was causing my problems. I even thought maybe I was going crazy it must all me in my mind. I was doing all the right things resting, taking time for me to heal and recoup, eating right, taking vitamins and I just kept getting worse. I was exhausted had mood swings, depression, anxiety and panic attacks where I was afraid to leave my house. Nightmare, headaches. Just to name a few of the things I was plegded with. I then found Doctors Wilsons web site and read all I could. Sent for his books and headed for my Doctors, saying I think I found what is wrong with me. She and I went on a learning journey together. I began Dr Wilson methods and about 6 months later was on the road to a life that I had forgotten about. It took a while to get healthly, but it did happen. I continue to do great and hope that everyone that hears about Wilson's Syndrome will give it a try and fine the life out there that is theres to enjoy. ... . ... . Good Luck

4-0 out of 5 stars Must Read For Anyone With Low Body Temperature
Dr. Wilson explains how DTSF/decreased thyroid system function can cause numerous debilitating symptoms, strikingly similar to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and not show up on routine blood tests. He explains how treatment with the active hormone T3 using his protocol has provided therapy to many patients. Case studies and discussion of symptoms are provided.

A Doctor's manual is also available which provides complete detail for treating Wilson's Syndrome.

This book could be an answer to prayer for a multitude of people and combined with the Doctor's manual gets 5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This Book for your Child's Teacher!!
We bought this book for my son's fifth grade teacher, who had some trepidation about teaching my son, First,we had bought this book for ourselves and it made total sense to us. After the teacher adopted many of the teaching strategies described in this book, my son had the most successful year in his whole scholastic history! The teacher also happened to be very experienced, consistent and organized, which helped very much, but he had taught my son before that with little to no success. This book made the difference.

The thing is, the teacher developed behavioral strategies and explicit rules for the whole classroom, so my son was never singled out! My son's severe behaviors improved incredibly until they were exremely limited - both at school and at home. His relationships with his peers progressed amazingly. And his schoolwork blossomed; he was ranked #3 in the entire class.

Alas, this year, when the strategies were NOT applied to the classroom, the whole year fell apart and we withdrew my son from that school.

All goes to show, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure, and this book gives TONS of prevention.

Finally, there is a section for the parents that makes perfect sense. I liked the one about engaging in verbal arguments - it's ok not to have the LAST word as long as you have the LASTING word.

This book is the Gold Standard of books on Asperger Syndrome. Along with Teresa Bolick, "Aspergers and Adolescence," I frequently recommend these books to everyone who has any tangential contact with Asperger Syndrome.

THANK YOU Brenda Smith Myles for writing this book. I hope to read many more of your books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical state-of-the-art guide and invaluable resource
Asperger Syndrome and Rage is a practical, state-of-the-art guide for parents and professionals. As a parent of a young adult son with Asperger Syndrome and a school psychologist, I felt as though the authors had lived in my home and worked with the students I served in the school. Feasible and realistic solutions to assist individuals with AS to become successful in their daily lives and to learn to monitor and control uncomfortable situations are presdented. Every concept introduced is clearly explained in easy to understand language and is followed by real-life examples. The ultimate goal of this book is to help individuals with AS understand their exceptionality, complete with its strengths and challenges. This book is an invaluable resource.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heading Melt Downs Off At the Pass
Parents, educators and people on the autism/Asperger's spectrum will get a lot of mileage out of this excellent book. It is written in a plain, straight-forward style that clearly describes the behaviors that are often associated with a/A. I like the way the authors don't make light of meltdowns and explain what often triggers them. I also like the straight-forward direct approach they take in helping others cope with, and, in cowpoke parlance, head meltdowns off at the pass. This is a book that many will find helpful and power packed with invaluable information. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars BOTH BOOKS VERY HELPFUL, WELL WORTH THE COST
I AGREE THAT THERE WERE SOME MINOR ERRORS BUT OVERALL A WORTHWILE TEXT. THERE ARE NOT MANY OTHER SOURCES THAT ONE CAN REVIEW TO GET A SAMPLE OF WHAT WILL BE ON THE BOARDS.THE EPOCHS WERE GOOD EXAMPLES OF WHAT WILL BE FOUND ON THE TEST. THE AUTHOR SHOULD PUT OUT SEVERAL MORE EDITIONS OF THE WORKBOOK.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better than you think
This book gives the reader an excellant overview of the subject matter. To my eye there are some errors but they do not reduce the quality to any significant degree. The questions are very deverse. I especially like the sample epochs. As a trained tech I think that this book is very helpful for the boards. It compliments the Fundamentals text well. It could be made better but it is not as near as costly as any of the APT materials.

1-0 out of 5 stars Like the text, it needs revision in a big way
...Over 20% of the answers or questions need to be corrected for wording or accuracy. More than 10 of the 200 answers directly contrast the information provided in the author's own textbook (which is also unreliable). This book is so flawed in logic, accuracy, and specificity... I think the format is the only thing positive about the book. I wouldn't purchase it again. If you are a sleep center and plan on incorporating this into your training program, be sure to review and correct (read, re-write it) before using it for trainee instruction.
Anyway, you should definitely be skeptical about learning this book as written. Actually, the process of correcting it was definitely good practice for the exam... it may have some value after all. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Headache in the Pelvis
This is ABSOLUTELY the most ACCURATE book I have ever read, and I have never done a review of a book before, but I just have to on this one. I asked my daughter to order it for me and she did. I haven't quite finished reading it yet (still in the process), but it is soooo true. I am so excited about the results of the exercises in this book that I just had to do this review of it. I have been having lots of trouble with my bowels not working since I was in a wreck a little over 15 years ago from which I found out later that I had a blood clot in the groin area and now have Lupus, cirrhosis, and diabetes. My intestines only worked from once to twice a week for the past four to five years. With these exercises (and I've only done them for one month now) my bowels are moving every day. This is AMAZING for me because I have tried everything before, and nothing worked. I have been from doctor to doctor trying to get help. I am soooo thankful to the kind doctors that took their precious time to write this book! I don't know them, but they deserve a great reward for this. I'm just soooo AMAZED at the exercises, and what they say about getting the blood supply to the muscles is so true! Thanks again to all that took the time to write such an accurate book. WOW

3-0 out of 5 stars Just to be honest...
After reading the previous 'review' I have to be very skeptical of it.

The fact that the book was released in February and the reviewer states "It is now 2 1/2 years after I first started to practice..." means that they are not reviewing the book, but the book writer and his practices. I would almost think that the person has a vested interest in the success of the book.

I may buy it yet, since I have only recently realized that I have prostatitis. I will listen to my physician's recommendations first, then look to alternative therapies, usually under the supervision of my physician. If you find that you are not comfortable enough to do the same, then I would suggest that you get a new physician, until you find one that will not only be responsible, but listen to your thoughts also. I fired 4 physicians before I found the one that I currently have, you can too. Doctors aren't gods, they need your business, not the other way around.

5-0 out of 5 stars It works
I experienced pain above my groin and in the pelvis/abdomen for about four years before it was successfully controlled--mostly elminated--by learning the techniques from these authors. My pain was a dull ache, and the pain would worsen if I had to stand or walk for a long time (e.g. a movie theater line or walking in a shopping mall). Three urologists in 4 years could not find the reason for the pain, but it persisted. I also endured uncomfortable invasive medical procedures and bouts of powerful antibiotics, all without being healed. Finally, a urologist who had heard a research paper being delivered by one of the book's authors at a medical conference referred me to them at Stanford Urology. After beginning their progressive/deep relaxation protocol and physical therapy, my symptoms were reduced in intensity by 90%-100% (becaming mild, occasional episodes rather than chronic and painful). The best part of it: no drugs, no fancy medical procedures or spooky side effects. Actually knowing how to heal the problem elminated the tremendous emotional and mental burden of having the previously mysterious pain; I could control it--and even eliminate it. This is not the quick-fix; it takes time and discipline, probably for a lifetime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for any clinician treating the Cervical Spine!
Dr. Murphy has produced the state of the art text in the conservative management of the Cervical spine. Covered are the basic sciences, most common clincal syndromes, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and management. Taking a multi-disciplinary approach, this book serves Chiropractic physicians, Physiatrists, physical therapists, Osteopathic physicians, and all clinicians with a need and interest in understading conservative Cervical spine care.

Among therapeutic approaches covered are manipulation, soft-tissue techniques, the Mckenzie protocol, sensorimotor rehabilitation, cervical stabilization, exercises, psychological management, and surgical.

Clinical conditions include Cervical trauma, motor vehicle collisions, headaches, Cervical radicular and pseudoradicular syndromes, joint dysfunction, myofascial syndromes, vertigo, disequilibrium, orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, and neuropsychological dysfunction.

Of all the fine information contained in this work, my favorite portions consist of the quite frequent "Clinical Pearls" interspersed thoughout each chapter. These are Dr. Murphy's own personal commentaries, practical clinical tips, and observations. They add immeasurably to the usefulness of the information in daily practice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Leckman and book is right on.
I bought this book after I found it mentioned in several posts and chat rooms for Tourette's Syndrome.

James Leckman and his book are held in high regard by the TS community.

If you are looking for an approach to the problem that doesn't involve drugs, look here, it is covered. There are techniques and methods explained, such as Habit Reversal, that have been validated as working for TS; validated over a long time. The method was originated in 1973 by Azrin. ....

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource to have in your reference library
Even if you work with only one or two children with Tourette's Syndrome, this compilation of over 25 years of research results with a client base of thousands is an excellent resource to have in your reference library. The documentation of multidisciplinary contributions makes it convenient to explore concepts further without having to search through a wide variety of professional journals. Two useful features include the summary of one chapter and preview of the next on the same page and the assessment tools found in the Appendices. The recommended treatment approach focuses on supporting development of the child over time, rather than just eliminating symptoms. A multidisciplinary team of professionals can provide a variety of treatment approaches to address the factors affecting the child at home and at school. Coordination by a flexible, non-doctrinaire clinician, and partnerships with parents and teachers are encouraged. While the authors suggest that the school psychologist fill this role, not all schools have access to one with the necessary perspective on treatment. Instead, the licensed professional social worker is more likely to employ the multidisciplinary, strengths-based, coordinated approach to caring for children with Tourette's Syndrome and related conditions. Contributions from licensed professional social workers would be an asset to the next edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent resource
This is one of the best and most comprehensive works on Tourette's Syndrome I've come across. Scientists and/or practitioners working with people who have TS should buy this book. As a psychologist who works with people who have TS, I've found this book to be my best resource on the subject. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars only a starting point
I read this book more than once, as well as Women, Weight, and Hormones, had a consult with dr Vliet and must say this book is a well researched starting point but that since then I have found other books more helpful. I suggest the excellent book by Uzzi Reiss MD, Natural Hormone Balance for concrete suggestions that addressed some problems I developed during NHRT treatment, Dr John Lee What your doctor may not tell you about menopause, and Alan Gaby's book on osteoporosis. It is my experience that without a well thought out plan of attack and a doctor who really listens, you end up in side effect city. Thanks to Dr Reiss I now am able to implement something that really works in balance with my body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally some straight answers!
Here is straight, knowledgable advice based on science and research and respect for what women feel! Thank you Dr. Vliet!!I highly recommend this book for anyone out there who can't get straight answers on balancing hormones. The problem that I encountered in the plethora of literature that I read was that books on "natural" normonal balance never discussed any negative side effects that can occur in a woman. This book is honest and easy to understand. A must for every woman's library!

1-0 out of 5 stars I wish I had never heard of this book
The author of this book recommends transdermal estradiol (estrogen) patches as a relatively "natural" therapy for various problems, including the treatment of hormonally-driven migraine headaches. Inspired by her recommendation, I asked my gynecologist for a prescription. When I started on it, I had just had a check-up and was told then that my uterus was normal. After a year and a half using the patches, I was told my uterus had grown to the size it would be if I were 3 to 4 months pregnant, all stretched out with three large fibroid tumors! My gynecologist recommended surgery.

Aside from the headaches, I had been perfectly healthy before taking the transdermal estradiol. My gynecologist told me this is something estrogen does -- makes the uterus and fibroids grow (not that he said one word about this when he wrote out the prescription!)

If there was a warning about this in "Screaming to be Heard," I sure didn't see it. I have read on the web that this particular form of estrogen is the most potent at making fibroids grow. (Do a search for "Fibroids and Estrogen Therapy" and you can read the same article by Dr. Frederick R. Jelovsek which I read.) I wish I had never seen this book. Not only did the estradiol patches cause fibroids tumors to grow, but it only took the edge off my headaches -- not nearly as much help as I later found in another book I bought at Amazon called "Heal Your Headache" by David Buchholz. I would have been much better off if I had skipped reading "Screaming to be Heard" and kept looking elsewhere for better recommendations. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Asperger's and Beyond!
Asperger's Syndrome or AS is a neurological condition that is on the spectrum as autism. It is NOT a mental illness. Luke Jackson, the young author of this sterling work gives a clear and pure voice of what "undefined behavioral/sensory differences" mean in terms of coping on a routine daily basis. Heightened sensory modes in addition to many of the behaviors that often accomopany AS such as rigid adherence to routines and/or ideas; social difficulties and literal interpretations of statements often stand out even more during puberty. This brilliant young man has presented a good case for nutrition and autism/Aspeger's; (a/A) several of his siblings exhibit varying degrees of spectrum behaviors.

Dr. Tony Attwood, an author and Asperger's specialist has contributed to this book. Dr. Attwood gives the Voice of Hope and the Stamp of Validity on Aspeger's. He provides clear, logical descriptions of spectrum behavior as well as clear, logical definitions of Asperger's and its neurological relationship to autism. Hats off to Dr. Attwood!

This is a book that will be cherished and used by parents, professionals, people with spectrum differences and people who are interested in spectrum differences. This invaluable book is for everybody!

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside Information on Teens with AS
This is the best book I have read on Asperger's Syndrome because it is incredibly readable and practical - no long words or scientific jargon, but helpful insights given by a teen with AS. I hope Luke Jackson will keep writing because he is a great help to those of us out there trying to figure this all out and how we can help our kids. (Thanks, Luke, for a job well done!) This book is great value for your money and you will have a hard time putting it down.

Well, this book is not helpfull. I did not live through this years of my life. With this book it just makes it harder. My great uncle (fly) said that goths are people eaters...so don't talk to them. 4-0 out of 5 stars A funny Chisel
Wow! what an awkward name for a book. but it really is kinda like that. A summary of this book is the 12 things that can drag a man down in his leadership in the home, in Church, and his relationship with God. (In my eyes.) These 12 points are taken from the character of Samson, and his weak personality traits that led him to his undoing.
Mixed in as well are some rather humorous stories, and some hard hitting ones as well. Not only this, but the pages of this book are backed up by scripture (be wary of the Christian book that doesnt!) I would suggest this book for anyone who is tired of falling in the same sins, that seem stuck, or just want to be better men (or women) I remember reading this for the first time, and then after I was done with a chapter, I had to go, "Wow God, is this me?" It was a true growing experience, and even now when I read it, I get cool new stuff. Good book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly "user friendly" self-help book for Christians
The Samson Syndrome by Mark Atteberry (Minister at Poinciana Christian Church) is a thoroughly "user friendly" self-help book for Christians (especially Christian Men), concerning the lessons that can be learned from the Strongest Man of Biblical Old Testament lore. Cautioning against errors common to the strong (including the tendency to use anger as a tool, take too much for granted, or lose sight of the big picture), The Samson Syndrome is profound in both its universally applicable advice and in its encouragement of a Christian faith in God.

5-0 out of 5 stars Little attention is being paid to this Book...
right now....But I wholeheartedly recommend all Christians pick this one up..men and women alike. It's true Atteberry has a style of writing that grabs the readers attention. In the same style as Lucado, he is able to relate on all levels and all experiences we have in this life and tie it into the experiences the scriptures show happened before. What can also be felt though this book are the Leadership undertones essential in anyone who leads or manages people. I am currently recommending it to Managers in my place of work...Christian and non Christian alike...Pick it up...it's hard to put down! YBIC ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Make Your Doctor Read This Book!
If you have Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or suspect that you may have, this book can open medical doors for you. FMS/CFS/CFIDS are illnesses that are very misunderstood by the medical community at large. Normally this disease needs to be diagnosed by a rheumotologist. If you are having unexplained joint pain and unexplainable fatigue, make your doctor read this book. It outlines the illness, symptoms, tests that should be ordered and how to correctly interpret the results. My doctor and I follow Dr. Teitelbaum's program and I am improving. It is the best source of information on Fibromyalgia/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome available. Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum is very passionate about this illness due to the fact that he has had it and knows what his patients feel. He writes compassionately and in a language that a non-medically trained reader can understand. It is less expensive than a trip to the doctor and you'll definately get more information

5-0 out of 5 stars Fanatastic, easy to understand.
The book was very thorough regarding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia (FMS). It could have had more information about Myofascial Pain Syndrome and its interrelationship with FMS. It is a condition often associated with or preceding FMS. Dr. Teitelbaum reports about accompanying conditions encompassing CFS & FMS, and their symptoms, then spells out treatments clearly.

When I realized Dr. Teitelbaum's office is only about 40 min. drive from my home, I became very excited and wanted to make an appointment to see him. Then I learned that he charges $1,500 for the initial 3 hour visit, and this didn't include lab tests, which would be another $1,500 to $2,000! I feel somewhat betrayed! It might be better to make the book a gift to your regular doctor, and work with him or her.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some encouraging ideas but omits celiac disease
I found hope in this book at a time I felt fairly hopeless and still think it presents a lot of worthwhile ideas to explore.

However, my chronic fatigue turned out to be due celiac disease (gluten intolerance) which is thought by some researcher to have a prominence as high as 1 in 133 in the USA. Since fatigue is one of the most common symptoms (and sometimes the ONLY symptom), celiac disease deserved at least a mention in this book. There are no references to it (or to gluten as a potential toxin) at all in the book that I could find.

As a result, I spent considerable money on recommended supplements which did nothing for me. Even so, one or more of the ideas in here might be just the ticket for someone else suffering from fatigue so it's definitely worth a look.

If you're interested researching this possibility, check out "Dangerous Grains" by Hoggan and Braly or one of the many other excellent books on gluten intolerance for sale here on Amazon.com.

Best wishes in your quest for health and energy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LIFESAVER
Dear Heather: Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!! for your book EATING FOR IBS. My husband was diagnosed several years ago with IBS and has struggled off and on since then. The past year has been exceptionally bad as nothing our physician suggested helped. He had gotten very depressed and was losing weight noticibly, was ready to quit his job and had decided that he was done with life basically. We're too young to be "done with life."

After searching the net several times for something to help, I came across your book. It was an answer to prayer, literally! I didn't know how my husband would respond to trying the diet, but after he read the first several pages, he was able to identify with everything that was there and was agreeable to giving it a shot.

It is unbelievable how just changing our eating habits have changed his life. And how delicious the recipes are. I have also been able to substitute safe ingredients in my own recipes, so some of his favorite dishes can now be enjoyed more than ever since he can enjoy eating again without wondering what will happen after he eats.

We have been using the diet for 4 weeks, and for 4 weeks, my husband has been symptom free. He is a new man and feels as though he has been given his life back!

Again, thank you for all the valuable information for IBS sufferers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best treatment against IBS
.
I'm one of the many persons whose life was changed by reading Heather's book on Eating for IBS.

I've been following the book's recipes and tips for 6 months now and feel I have regained control over my health and my body. I have also rediscovered the joys of cooking and eating because it is the first time in twenty years I can eat food that will not leave me with the sad feeling that I've eaten the wrong thing again.

I've got several books on IBS and constantly scan the Web for novelties but on top of the delicious recipes it contains, this book also provides the most comprehensive list of trigger foods, alternative ingredients, and solutions I've seen so far. It has opened my eyes about the dangers of several foods, namely egg yolks, fructose, and insoluble fiber. I have also followed links to some recommended products from other companies, peppermint capsules and hypnotherapy CDs, and these have had a great effect as well.

So Heather has changed my life, really, and I thank her from the bottom of my heart.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for plain eaters or for IBD sufferers
I purchased this book because I have recently been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD) and this book claims to be good for IBD as well as IBS sufferers. I found originally found out about this book from this website http://www.helpforibs.com/

This book is full of gourmet-style recipes. The recipes call for ingredients that are no longer exotic, since they can be found in larger grocery stores (even in places like Alaska), but are still fairly expensive.

Also, while this book claims to cater to IBD as well as IBS sufferers, don't be fooled. The recipes in this book contain far too much fat, spices and insoluable fiber to be appropriate for IBD sufferers.

Still, these recipes are lower in fat compared to traditional recipes. While many are gourmet-style recipes that look like they will take every bowl and pot in your kitchen to create, they do look tasty. So, if you have IBS, and are looking for variety without aggravating your condition... and you really like your kitchen, I have no reservations recommending this book.

But, if you have IBD, be cautious about this book. You will most likely find that there are unacceptable ingredients and preparation methods in the recipes, unless you have a very mild form of the disease or are in remission. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wish I had found this years ago
My son was only diagnosed with AS three years ago at the age of 10, but we have made much progress in the last three years. We are experiencing difficulties at school and I have been searching for ways to help him. This book has so many ideas and strategies, it's almost hard to know where to start, but I believe we will find what we are looking for in this workbook. What is so wonderful about it that it draws the child in, but provides much more for parents and teachers, also. Don't let the price discourage you, it's well worth it!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent "TEACCHing" Tool
How I wish I had had this book as a child. This is a good teaching tool for helping children with Asperger's understand their "undefined differences," make peace with them and explain them to other people. I like the way the book emphasizes the point that "different" does not necessarily mean stigmatized.

This work does a great service in making efforts to remove the stigma often associated with Asperger's. Although Asperger's is a neurological "difference" that IS on the Autism spectrum, it is not "autism," per se. Many argue the point that it is a form of autism, or a "milder form," but that question remains open. What IS known about Asperger's is that it is INDEED a spectrum condition and that it DOES share some autistic properties. Sadly, "autism" is such a highly charged term that it often eclipses the different challenges people with Asperger's contend with. This book does an admirable job of addressing this issue.

I highly recommend this one for all people whether or not they are on the spectrum. It has good information and paves the way to acceptance.

3-0 out of 5 stars All references are to "autism"
I was disappointed to find that throughout the book, the term "autism" was used, rather than Asperger's. There is some debate as to whether Asperger's is a form of autism. Moreover, I don't use the term "autistic" with my very high-functioning Asperger's child. It may not be fair, but "autistic" has the connotation of someone with a much more severe disability.

Other than that, the book seems great. But I may never use it for the reason above. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent text
I found the information quite thorough. It is written in a user-friendly way, easy to understand. I bought this book because it was listed as a reference for the chiropractic practice part 2 exam. This book helped me with the locations of the trigger points. Sometimes the chiro boards like to ask questions on trigger points. However, Leonardi's book: National Board of Chiropractic Part II Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers and National Board of Chiropractic Part III Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations are excellent for board exam preparation. These three books are needed for the part II and Part III of the boards.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate in drug-free pain relief!
As a Clinical Massage Therapist at a hospital, I use these books almost daily. In fact, I just ordered my second set. . . The first is so threadbare it's barely usable. ANYTIME I have a patient with a pain that I can't immediately identify I grab my Travell's. This set is an absolute BIBLE for anyone in the health care industry. Travell and Simons have esentially written "The Instruction Manual" for elliminating myofascial pain by going to it's source!

Janet Travell, MD and David Simons, MD were absolute pioneers when it came to myofascial pain and it's treatment. What makes these books even more amazing is that they were written a full quarter of a century before doctors even acknowledged that myofascial pain actually exsisted. . . What makes them interesting is that, in this, the most current edition, they have re-evaluated about 65% of the sites that before would only be considered for cortizone or saline injection and now recommend these areas be attended to by a Massage Therapist. They even go into strong detail as to stroke, direction and stretching. There are still plenty of sites that they recommend for injection, but only in a last resort situation.

The chapters are laid out in an incredibly easy to understand manner, though that's not even the beauty of the book's design. If you know the name of the muscle in question, you simply look inside the front cover; the muscle are all listed with their coresponding page numbers next to them. Don't know the name or not sure which muscle it is in the group? No problem. You again open the front cover and there, in 5th grade simplicity, are charts for all the areas covered in the book. Flip to the area in question and look through the diagrams. When you find (in the super well drawn diagrams) the pain you are trying to treat, you are given, not only several treatment plans, but etiology and most likely direct verve aggravation associated with the pain.

My only problem with the set is that the book are not as well bound as maybe they could be for the price. You'll notice, however, that it didn't have enough of an impact on me to give it any less that a perfect score.

I STRONGLY recommend this book for ANY health care practitioner that deals with pain control and alleviation.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour de Force
Janet Travell MD and David Simons MD spent a lifetime studying the patterns and treatment of muscular and soft tissue pain in patients. It is a specialty in itself, and provides an amazingly detailed review of anatomy. These books are the bible on the subject written by the "mother" and "father" of the specialty. There will hardly be a day in the professional life of a busy primary care practitioner, rheumatologist, orthopedist, neurologist, physiatrist or physical therapist when these books will not be used. The more one knows of this field, the more revelations one gets into those difficult chronic pain patients. The etiology and muscular complexity of the huge field of "tension headache" syndromes now become clear. With these books you will have the tools to diagnose and treat effectively (usually dramatically) the entire spectrum of myofascial pain from head to toe, muscle by muscle. Why do so few physicians know of this vital area of medicine? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Resource
This is the best book I have read on AS in quite a while. It is one of the few that addresses the differences in adolescence. Those of us who have been in the AS world for awhile know there is a lot of info out there for younger children. Now that our children are getting older, their challenges change. This book really helps in that area. I loaned my copy to my son's educational assistant and she doesn't want to give it back ! Great book, must read for parents of AS adolescents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny
One of the best books on this subject

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the early teen years
This book is organized and very readable. Each section discusses an area where a person with Asperger's Syndrome might have a deficit/challenge. For each "problem" area, there is a short clinical discussion of what the deficiency means (for example, what the heck is "executive function"), then a practical description of how this difficulty might manifest itself in behavior (difficulty with performing particular tasks), and finally some ways that the parent/teacher/other might help the youngster work through or around the problem. This book is my current favorite, as my 11 year old son moves from the shelter of elementary school into the more open middle school environment. The book addresses social skills, academic skills, and has lots of ideas for when and how to help (or keep out of the way!) your child. One section that really impressed me is about special interests, rituals, and routines... The author emphasizes that these need not be viewed as obssessions, compulsions, and rigidity of behavior! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars best book out there
I've just finished reading It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!, and I'd like to congratulate you on an immensely readable, reasonable, and informative book.

I've been coping with computer-related repetitive strain injury for over ten years, with this progression of diagnoses: bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome, epicondylitis, and thoracic outlet syndrome. I've also recently been diagnosed with Dupuytren's contracture (more in the right hand than the left). Only voice-recognition software has allowed me to continue in my work as editor and writer.

I helped start an RSI discussion group at the university where I work some years ago, though it's no longer active. It was quite a mix of people, both faculty and staff, all bright people, and all pretty seriously affected by RSI. Hands down, we felt Pascarelli and Quilter's book Repetitive Strain Injury: A Computer User's Guide was the best source of information we had. How I wish we'd also had It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome! back then, too. It's the first book I recommend now.

Again, thank you so much for your fine book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on RSI by far
I read "It's Not Carpal Tunnel Syndrome!" and all I can say is it's a great book. I've determined that my particular problem is that the ulnar nerve in my elbow is being pressed on because I'm constantly supporting my entire upper body by putting my elbows on the arm rests of my chair. This has caused serious irritation to the nerve and recently I've been waking up in the middle of the night because my pinky and part of my ring finger is numb. To anyone with RSI, I can't recommend the book strongly enough. It is by far the best book on the subject. I even gave my Doctor a copy of it because he, like most, is totally clueless about RSI. Even I knew I didn't have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome after doing 5 minutes of research, yet that's all he kept talking about was Carpal Tunnel. Not once did he even attempt to address the root cause(s) of my problems ... he just wanted to give me anti-inflammatory drugs and told me to wear a brace. No thanks. This book really opened my eyes ... it should be mandatory reading for all Doctors.

4-0 out of 5 stars best book I've seen, in years of lookin'
This is a terrific book. I've been an RSI sufferer for eight years and it's the best I ever read. Damany & Bellis stay humble about the things they don't know.

They provide just enough structural and physiological information to help the reader anchor themselves in a real understanding what's going on. A lot of the books spew out a lot of muscle names and nerve names kind as a way of groping for credibility, without really making sure that information is something the person can use.

They're open to the ambiguity, and lay out alternative explanations, for some of the big imponderables in RSI -- such as why some people get injured others don't, or why some recover and others don't.

They have pretty darn good descriptions of the nerve glides and stretches and so forth that a person needs to do. One of my great frustrations with even skilled physical therapists is that they describe a stretch and then walk away, without giving the patient good instructions that that they can follow when they get home.

The most important thing of all is this: the book seems honest and clearheaded and genuine, and it's clear that they're really interested in helping to move the ball forward in understanding RSI. ... Read more
