5-0 out of 5 stars Eye Opener and Life Saver
This book opened my eyes to the many symptoms that plague me as an aging male. Most people think of testosterone as solely a sex hormone, but this book reveals all the other things that testosterone does to keep you living long and well. I take THOR-Plex regulary and watch my diet (with testosterone in mind), and exercise...much of which I learned in this and other books from Amazon. Get the book, you'll undoubtedly learn quite a bit from it. If you're over 40, I hope you're going to read this book or something like it - soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all men!
As a physician specializing in male hormonal replacement, I have read many books on the subject. I find "The Testosterone Syndrome" to be the definitive book on the restoration of healthy levels of testosterone and estrogen. Dr.Shippen has written a book not only grounded in scientific facts but one that is enjoyable to read. Low testosterone is something every man will face in his life time. This is the book to tell you what to expect and what to do about it. I recommend it to all my male patients who are beginning to notice signs of aging.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important Book
This book helped save my marriage. I was suffering from low sex drive, poor performance and general malaise and irritability. A doctor suggested I have my thyroid level tested, but it was normal range. Viagra only gave me massive headaches. Then an article I saw suggested this book. It is very readable and informative, but most of all balanced: It does not advocate testosterone treatment as a cure-all for everyone or everything. I had my blood retested, and discovered that I had a severe case of testosterone deficiency. I began the treatments advocated by Dr. Shippen. It took trying several different methods of application (because my level was so abnormal), but within about 8 months, my testosterone levels were normal. Thank you Dr. Shippen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful book, but some overgeneralization
As the mother of a son with Aspergers, I am always eager to read anything written on the subject. This book was well written, interesting and helpful in understanding Aspergers, and I would recommend it. The only fault I really found with it was overgeneralization. I think at times the author assumes her own traits are traits that anyone with Aspergers would have. For example, she talks about having a poor sense of directions being a trait, when in fact I think many people with AS have an abnormally good sense of direction, including my son. I think such generalizations can hide the fact that people with AS, like all people, are very different than each other, and have their own very unique personalities. However, I don't mean to put this book down---it's a very valuable resource and a good read.

5-0 out of 5 stars We are not alone
Liane Holliday Willey's daughter was diagnosed with AS and through her research she realized that she herself had the same disorder. This book recounts her life before the self awareness that she is an "Aspie" as she calls herself. In retrospect the mystery of her life is revealed. My son was also diagnosed with Aspergers last year, which is why I was reading this book. Ironically as I read about Liane's life the hair began to stand up on my neck. I recognized myself. I loaned it to a friend, who recognized her husband and who now shares self awareness as well. You read it too. If you have an AS child you may recognize yourself, your spouse or that odd uncle or peculiar cousin, the oddball in the family tree :-) I also recommend her second book, Asperger Sydrome in the Family by the same author, which gives you ideas of what to do now that you understand what the problem is. Knowledge is power.

2-0 out of 5 stars Just One Woman's Tale
As an autobiography this is an easy and creative read. I was raised by a mother with AS. Her difficulties make Lianne's look plain querky or individualist. This is just one woman's tale. Asperger's Syndrome can be far more difficult to live with than this and certainly most AS sufferers would have trouble talking of themselves (and especially others) with such sustained and reasoned insight, though eloquence with words is common. AS runs in my family on both sides. I couldn't help but feel Lianne is just socially uncomfortable, as so many people can be and just has her own pet querks like the majority of us! Perhaps she is at the higher fundtioning position on the imfamous 'spectrum' of this disorder. Otherwise,...Asperger's Syndrome? Doesn't sound much like it to me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bed number Ten
This was one of the best books I have read in a long time. I ordered this book by mail and recieved it on Friday afternoon and started reading it instantly. It is now sunday afternoon and I just finished it. I want so badly to talk to this lady to see how she is today!! To read how uncaring so many people were is so heart breaking to me. There were the few that took the time to be more attentive but everyone should have been that way!! I am a nurse at a Houston hospital and I see nurses and other staff act like that everyday and it breaks my heart because I am a very caring nurse and go above and beyond to help my patients. Every nurse needs to read this book to see how people can be feeling when you treat them that way!! I would recommend this book to everyone I work with and know!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A real tearjerker!
I am an RN and all too often, patients are faced with uncaring caregivers who perceive meeting patient's needs as "too much trouble". If there is a medical person who perceives Sue as a "whiner", I would not want that person to enter my room! The book is a compelling novel, I could not put it down! It included wonderful stories of her travels and family. I wished the book was longer, I hated for it to end. I cried throughout the last portion of the book because it was so touching. The one thing I think it lacks is getting its point across to caregivers. Some caregivers are too uncaring to fully comprehend the torture Sue went through lying there day after day, unable to move or speak, being at the mercy of others. I put it on my list as one of the best books I have ever read!

4-0 out of 5 stars I can relate as a "Fellow Comrade"
I read this book after spending five weeks in ICU, followed by four months in a Rehab Center...recuperating from Guillain Barre Syndrome. I can relate to how she had favorite nurses...so did I, and being totally paralyzed it may be hard for others to understand just how much that extra little fluff of the pillow makes after laying for eight hours in the same position. My body was very sensative, and any movement was painful...I can imagine how much more painful it was with her. The things I found hard to understand in the book were the thoughts she had in her day to day activities....oh, I would be driving by the supermarket now, on my way to pick up my best friend Bonnie...these thoughts are just hard for me to believe. I know my thoughts were like "when will these leg spasms quit...when will I walk again...when will the aching in my legs get better...when will I get out of here....how much is this costing....when is my next therapy" these were my thoughts. The book does give a good view of just how devastating GBS can be. For me....It will be 4 years this Christmas since my GBS attack, and I am still not well. From the waist up I am about 95%, and from the waist down I am about 50% which includes leg and feet numbness, muscle spasms/cramps,joint pain, and stiffness. But I feel blessed to have back as much as I do, and I pray that God will give me the strength and courage to continue my recuperation from this catastrophic illness. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic reference text on Child Abuse & Neglect
On the brink of the 40th year of the formal recognition of child abuse and neglect, editors Robert Reece and Stephen Ludwig have brought to the field a textbook that embodies the critical elements of the scientific foundations of current medical understanding of maltreatment. Originally primarily a social action issue, the field of child abuse and neglect has matured into a medical subspecialty, built on a solid foundation of scientific study. Dr. Reece's first edition, published in 1994, represented the state of the art at that time; this second edition sets a new standard as the preeminent textbook in the field. Incorporating the latest in clinical and research knowledge in the field, this exhaustive edition is almost 25 % larger (590 pages) than the first, has 21 chapters, 33 contributors, 265 illustrations and 2660 references. The contributors have written in a style that nicely balances the academic and clinical aspects of our understanding of the diagnosis and treatment of child abuse.

With a few exceptions (biomechanics, imaging, photodocumentation, medicolegal issues), each chapter is body system specific and reflects a significant refinement in our understanding of the mechanism(s) of injury in child abuse. Of particular note is the addition of chapters on the Biomechanics of Physical Injury, New Directions in Neuroradiology, Immersion Injuries and Conditions that Mimic Child Sexual Abuse. In the last 10 years, some of the field's greatest advances have been in understanding of the "pathology" of inflicted trauma and emanate from the study of biomechanics and the use of technologic advances in radiologic imaging. The contributors to these sections have done a superb job in reporting these advances in a clinically relevant manner.

Recognizing that the scientific basis of our understanding of injury is still evolving, each author thoughtfully describes the current state, and limitations, of our knowledge. This is a text for clinicians who have matured with the field as well as those just getting their feet wet, amply covering both the fundamentals and advanced aspects of child maltreatment. Readers will find this a favorite first reference to consult when confronted with a clinically challenging differential diagnosis regarding the interpretation of cutaneous, skeletal findings or anogenital trauma. The chapters on the Pathology of Fatal Abuse and Fatal Child Abuse and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome superbly complement each other and should be of great value to clinicians who participate on child death review teams.

Each chapter is strong enough to be considered an authoritative monograph on its own. The chapters on Abusive Head Trauma, Child Sexual Abuse, Neglect, Ocular Manifestations and Child abuse by Poisoning are classic syntheses of those topics. Charts, drawings, algorithms, radiologic images and color photographs provide meaningful adjuncts to the text, particularly helpful to the clinician.

Although this text is clearly geared towards health care professionals, it will also prove invaluable for colleagues in law enforcement and child protection who may be called upon to interpret medical reports and understand the "how to's" of the medical diagnosis of child maltreatment. This text could only be enhanced by the addition of chapters that assist clinicians in understanding child abuse and neglect in the larger context of the child protection system and that emphasize the role of pediatricians in abuse prevention.

Kudos go to the editors and the contributing authors for sharing their clinical expertise in a textbook that represents the cutting edge of our understanding of the medical diagnosis and treatment of child abuse and neglect. This book is a fitting tribute to the field as child abuse enters its forth decade.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Child Abuse Defense
Although shorter than Monteleone's two volume set, it has slightly different information. I would recommend it for every social worker, prosecuting attorney and child abuse defense attorney. The knowledge and information in this book, if available to all participating parties in child abuse investigations, would reduce their number and result in more reliable findings in courts. It's in no ones interest to have child abuse petitions litigated or founded unnecessarily, particuilarly the children involved. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives advice I want my teenager to hear
When I picked up Jerry's book I had a hard time putting it down. I am a parent of an adolescent with AS and have been "winging it" for most of his life. No books for parents were ever written on the subject until 1999. I've relied on my own parenting experience of neurotypical children and professional autism journals to figure out what to do. Now that I'm preparing my child to be "launched" into college, having a life handbook that he can rely on is very important. Jerry's book is very concrete with common sense information, and an attitude about life that I hope my own son will adopt. I can recommend this book to any person on the spectrum, and also to parents of children age 11 to adulthood. Sometimes when you are feeling most challenged as a parent of an AS preteen or teen, it is very helpful to remind you where you are heading!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for everyone
Jerry's book is a must read for everyone! His outlook on life is so honest and a tell it like it is experience. His sense of humor is on going all through the book, you can laugh with him and also feel his pain and frustration in some situations. I have been to a few of his lectures in the past, and I must say that he always receives a standing ovation. This book is another standing ovation for Jerry! Well done and very enjoyable to read. A book that is hard to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful guide for living!
Great job Jerry! This book is a wonderful insight of living life on the Autism Spectrum. Jerry tells of lots of lessons he has learned through his life for those on and off of the spectrum. The humor throughout the book just adds the "cherry on the sunday." Strongly recommended!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Other Side of the Story
Finally a man who can see the dangers and manipulation of pornography. I am glad that the other side of the story is being told as porn seems to be filtering into all aspects of our lives. Men are conditioned to look at women as sex objects from an early age. I do not see how anyone can argue that this does not have an impact on their views (especially in relation to women). Men are taught to look at numerous women - one is never enough - women who are naked and ready for them. Plus with airbrushing and computerization the pictures are not close to reality furthur adding fuel to the fire by reducing womeans self esteem to the very core - by judging us solely on how we look naked. Another area of concern is the number of women willing to deform and distort there bodies (usually with excessively large implants) and how this is glamourized in our society. Pornography is damaging to all members of society not just women as the book explains. Its time women and men were educated on the dangers of pornography. A great first step is to read this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars The book helped me, it has some notable drawbacks
I found this book both helpful, yet at times it made assertions (generalizations of certain people) that were unsubstantiated.

His development of what he defines as the "centerfld syndrome" was very enlightening for me. I liked the detailed group therapy sessions (he changed subjects names) where he clearly carried the burden of proof (in my eyes) for what comprises the centerfld syndrome - objectification, trophyism, etc. My wife and I read this portion and it helped me to uncover and debunk my own flawed thinking.

His narrow characterizations (on page 74) of anyone who is believes in scripture - that "Such people will have no use for this book" - he clearly shows his lack of judgment and a distinct bias against anyone with a faith in scripture. Not everyone who believes scripture fits his cookie-cutter fallacy of thinking. His ignorant statements to such people can quickly turn off a large population of people who (really need help and) could actually find help through his book if he would simply keep his unfounded opinions of religious people to himself.

I still found his very book helpful. It helped me to see women (and particularly my wife) in a different light and to see a little deeper into the root system of this problem.

There are portions of his book that helped me to see the flaws in my patterns of thinking. This has helped me find some freedom and has helped my relationship with my wife to a degree.

I really wish he had spent more time at the end developing the topics that were supposed to help a person find freedom in the last chapter "Overcoming the centerfld syndrome". I wish he would have spent more time on pesonal change rather than changing culture. The areas for personal change were very under-developed. I was eager to find more information on that. It was really disappointing. I read this book to help me to change and to enhance my marriage. I have more power over changing my own life and marriage (with God's grace) than I do an ENTIRE society.

He could have moved much or all of the descriptive content of cultural change to the middle of the book describing and supporting the tenants of the centerfld syndrome.

The best part of the book is where he develops the tenants of the centerfld syndrome. He develops this area masterfully.

I will still keep this book on my shelf, I just know what parts were helpful and which ones were half-baked.

5-0 out of 5 stars GOOD BOOK! But men still have to do the work!
This is a very worth while book. I've got 6 other books on the matter and this one by far gives men the most credit and options for improving their sexual outlook. I am a women who recently found out that her boyfriend had been hiding a cyberporn addiction even though he promised no more porn once we moved in together. He is 37 years old and picked this porn habit up from his father. He has gotten past much of his upbringing (the good ol'south) to see most women in a positive light--at least professionally. Big problem though that he compartmentalizes porn mentally as something that has no effect on our sexuality as a couple. I believe that he was enculturated to see women as objects for his pleasure and the book's author makes strong cases for this. Part of the problem is the Madonna/Whore thing and that the women in porn don't really seem like they are human at all to these guys--just parts to fixate on. Porn persuades men to seek self-indulgent fantasy and to shun intimacy with real women. This has really hurt our relationship because he's so fixated on himself/his body, that it becomes difficult for him to reach out to me even though we used to have a fantastic rewarding relationship just this time last year. I have read the book and feel better--I only hope that he will read it and do the work in the last chapter. We are in therapy now--but this sort of thing has all types of defenses wrapped around it and is fortified by denial and shame. Anyway--get this book, it is worth it. Just wish there was a workbook to go along with it. That would really help. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource- Not just for teachers
What a great resource guide. The description of AS is easy to read and understand, making it good for family members and friends who want to know more about why your child is "different". Most importantly, it is chock full of practical strategies that will help you to help your child navigate the "mainstream" with less difficulty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, easy-to-read
A busy teacher or parent can benefit tremendously from this book. My favourite part, which I now stress to every person who interacts with my son, is the use of the "Asperger Lens". The books shows many examples of a child's behaviour as it appears to others, then reviews the *same* behaviour through the "Asperger Lens", which is so illuminating! I highly recommend this book. Other AS books are also wonderful, but especially for teachers, this is specialized information, organized to be easy to read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as helpful as other books on this subject.
Although the information given about identifying and diagnosing Asperger's Syndrome was excellent, I feel that other references, such as that written by Tony Attwood, were much more helpful with the nuts and bolts of teaching techniques. In my opinion, the limited usefulness of the book certainly did not justify the price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Wish I Had Known About This Sooner
I am a male that was diagnosed with IBS approximately three years ago, and suffered with it for four years before that. After being dianosed (at 36 years old, I got it at 31), the doctor told me change my diet, and that was all. I tried eating different, but it did no good at all. My family doctor tried a protein diet, but that failed, and I basically just accepted the fact that I would have to suffer with this problem. I finally found Heather's book, "IBS, The First Year, and after trying the diet, my symptoms have almost all disappeared, and I had trouble almost everyday. I don't use Immodium AD at all, my "insides" feel great, and all functions are almost comepletely normal. By the way...I've only been on the diet for ONE WEEK.
The food tastes fantastic, and I have had absolutely no problems sticking to it. I recommend this book to anyone suffering from IBS. Doctors don't know much about it, and frankly cannot give much advise, so thank goodness we have Heather to help us. Sometimes it takes someone who suffers from the same affliction to help the rest of us when doctors can't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have IBS? This book is a must!
I can't recommend this book highly enough. For years I've been plagued by what doctors had diagnosed as IBS. They talked about foods, particularly fiber, but since I've been a vegetarian for nearly 30 years, I thought I knew what I needed to about food, and was told that my diet was good. I thought the answer for me was in eating very little, no more than twice a day, and hoping... Nevertheless, the problems persisted, becoming at times quite debilitating. A few weeks ago I learned of this book. I carefully read it, and, last week, for the first time in ages, I had two cross-country flights without any difficulty, and a week's vacation with only one problem. It's all due to this book, which is quite well written, extremely practical, with detailed suggestions, and transformative, in my experience.

Now, I suddenly have the feeling that perhaps actually feeling "normal" is possible, and normal is taking on a completely new meaning for me. For anyone with IBS, or who knows someone with IBS, this book is a MUST!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blue Bottle Mystery
I read the British version of this book and it is wonderful for anyone who feels like an outsider. It's about a boy diagnosed with a little known disorder called Asperger's Syndrome. The book is written for middle grade children, particularly those with this problem, but I would also recommend it to teachers, parents, counselers, any child who feels different from their peers.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really rocks!
It really was a good book about an Asperger's adventure and a boy with AS. I'm a 9 yo boy who just got diagnosised with AS, and it was fun to read about a boy with Aspergers.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Can we get the sequel, Mom?"
We finished this book tonight, and my 8-year-old son with Asperger's immediately asked me if we could get the sequel. You bet!

Wish the publisher would do a U.S. version, since some of the Aussie slang is a little hard for an American kid to understand. And my son would've liked a more thorough solution to the "mystery". But all-in-all, a very nice book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a personal account by a person with a life!!
I write as a peer and friend of Stephen Shore. His book
is a great step forward for our community. It is focused,
practical, well documented and informative. Stephen is not
another "autistic lounge act." He is a mature, married,
serious person with a life way beyond the deserved acclaim
that this book will bring to him.

The book is especially useful since Stephen Shore,
like most of the observed people with our condition,
Asperger's Syndrome, is male. His is the first book written
by one of the majority gender, after almost four decades of
living this way, to give parents, siblings, professionals
and our younger peers a great overview of how to live
in a unique way with dignity.

A must read and a very enjoyable one!!

Fully with Autism and Asperger's Syndrome"

5-0 out of 5 stars An Insider's Look At Living With Aspergers
Stephen Shore has written an unusual and worthy addition to the world of literature regarding Asperger's Syndrome.

Shore's work explores aspergers from three different viewpoints: as that of a clinician working with individuals with autism spectrum disorders, as an adult who himself has aspergers, and as an adult remembering the challenges aspergers has presented him with over the course of his lifetime.

As the parent of two boys with Autism Spectrum Disorders, I was delighted with Shore's explanations of why my children feel the need to do some of the things they do, and what purpose those behaviors serve in their lives.

In this reader's opinion, Beyond the Wall is an invaluable guide to anyone who knows someone with aspergers and autism. Shore's writing is right up there with Temple Grandin's, and should be included as a valuable reference book in anyone's collection of books about autism/aspergers.

5-0 out of 5 stars What It's Like On "The Inside"
As the father of a seven year old son who resides at the light end of the Autism Spectrum, I found Stephens book to be one of the very best I have read by someone who resides on The Spectrum themselves. It is also notable as one of the few autobiographical books by a male. Quite simply put, Stephen's forthrightness is wonderfully disarming. And his very unique ability (especially for someone actually on The Spectrum) to relate not only how the world appears to him but also how that reality fits into the one we nuero-typicals live in, shows an oversight I don't encounter in most typical adults. His positive example is nothing short of a godsend. Beyond giving us hope for our sons, daughters and loved ones who reside with Stephen in this very fascinating place, Stephen's book helps to unravel the mysteries we strive to understand every day. And that Stephen has achieved what he has thus far and has dedicated his life to furthering knowledge about and advocating for the individual on The Spectrum is testimony to this wonderful mans character (and to the loving devotion of his mother, his wife and his mentors!). I only hope my son strives to be half the man Stephen Shore has shown himself to be by this book. If you've just had The "Autism Bomb" fall on you - that is to say, just gotten the diagnosis, you owe it to yourself (and your loved one) to pick up this great book and start thinking positively now at the beginning of your journey, about your gifted child. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Power Cards is an excellent new approach to helping kids.
I have read and re-read the Power Cards book with great satisfaction. This new approach to working with some of our special kids is wonderful and I have found that these concepts really work. They are well thought out and easy to do. I hope that everyone will give this concept a try, especially when it seems nothing else seems to work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A behavior strategy that's fun to create and easy to use!
The Power Card Strategy has become one of the most effective strategies we use in our school. It is intrinsically motivating to students because it incorporates a student's special interest or favorite character into a story that helps them understand appropriate behaviors. The Power Card story is fun to develop because the student's favorite TV personality, cartoon character or real life hero explains the importance of using the appropriate behavior and explains how to display this behavior by following the listed steps. This resource has many examples of the Power Card Strategy and walks you through writing your own Power Card story and Power Card. It is an excellent resource for teachers, parents and other professionals who are involved in shaping children's behaviors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power Cards- What a strategy!
I am a special eduacation teacher in Illinois and work with children with autism spectrum disorder. I mainly work with children with high functioning autism and Asperger Syndrome. I have used the Power Card book several times and my district is adapting the strategy as one that really works with this population. My students can relate to their "obsessions" while learning rules- it's perfect! I have seen a significant increase in several target (preferred) behaviors with many students with autism and AS after the Power Card stratedy was implemented. I am big fan of this book. It's easy for anyone to use and I highly recommend it to parents and professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is about YOU. No, really, not your child, you!
If you're like me, you buy books on AS and consider the purchase a treat for yourself, even though the books concern your child. I was afraid this book might lose its focus on the parent at some point and start to focus on our kids--after all, how can one write about parenting a child with AS without writing about the children?--but the book remains solidly focused on the parents and discusses our children only in relation to our own lives.

Cohen is funny and insightful. I knew he knew what my life was like from the moment I read a line on the first page about when his son was expelled from his first preschool. My son was also asked to leave two preschools, so I had to chuckle in recognition.

This book is one I'll turn to whenever I need a real treat--just for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for all Asperger Parents
As a professional I recommend this book to all of the Asperger Parents I work with. Jeffry Cohen brilliantly shares his insights, his humor and his life as an Asperger Parent. Too often I have seen the family support system stretched to it's limits and then past. Jeffrey Cohen reminds the reader how important it is to have a support system, how important it is to tend to the other relationships our lives (spouses!)and how important it is to maintain you sense of humor. I found this book very hard to put down. Every parent with a child with AS should read wonderful book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new must-read
Jeffrey Cohen has captured the fears, frustrations, triumphs and hopes of Asperger parents beautifully. Easy to read, humorous and reassuring, this book is a great addition to the must-read list for parents of children challenged with Asperger Syndrome and related developmental disorders.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource for parents!
This book is a great resouce for parents. It speaks to the wonderful strengths of individuals with NLD and Asperger's. It also gives wonderful information about what services are needed to assist individuals with NLD and Asperger's to maximize those strengths.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for parents and educators
This book is extremely helpful in understanding the very misunderstood diagnosis of NLD. The diagnostic lists and the practical interventions are presented in an honest, intelligent and thoughtful manner. While the book is listed as a parent's guide, it is a must for regular ed. teachers and school therapists, many of whom are not familiar with the particular challenges facing a child with a NLD profile. If only Orion Academy (the author's highschool) could be cloned!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect 1st book for information about NLD
If you want to know more about NLD and interventions for this disorder; this is the perfect "starter book." Although I have heard many people say this book is geared for parents/educators with older NLD kids, I feel it is important to read, no matter what the age of your NLDer.
It gives all the traits on NLD (along with checklists), the thoughtful opinions of the author as to what category NLD should be under and ways to help an NLDer of any age.
What I really like beside the above is how the author makes sure the reader understands the importance of trying to get our NLDers prepared for independent life. If you have a young child with NLD, reading these "insights" is sure to help you to be wary of overcompensating for your childs disability while at the same time giving your child what he/she needs. By explaining some problems "older" NLDer's have-such as hygiene; it helped me to recognize the importance of working on these issues now before they become a problem. You won't understand this concept fully until you read the book yourself.
The book is an easy read, gives you a lot of information so you will understand and know how to help your NLD child.
IF you have an AS child, I think this book would also be good but I felt it gave more insight into NLD than it did AS. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars it made me feel a whole lot better....
It made me feel a whole lot better that there are other parents out there experiencing the same problems and feelings that my husband and I are having. We are the parents of a bright three-year-old, who is speaking on a 1 1/2 year old level. He has a vocabulary of about thirty words right now, and he uses them correctly and in context. However, he is far behind his age group. My son and our families had many similarities to the children in Mr. Sowell's books, "Late-Talking Children" and "The Einstein Syndrome". However, I don't agree 100% with everything Mr. Sowell wrote, and I would never use one man's opinion as gospel. Use this book as advice to be listened to and judged by an informed mind and a parent's heart. Research, read, talk to professionals, but also listen to your gut where it concerns your child. Mr. Sowell makes a good argument for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!
When I read The Einstein Syndrome it was amazing how much of my son I saw in it. Many of the things mentioned were things I had wondered about, and worried about. But reading this book has given me an entirely new outlook on my 3 yr old son.

This book is wonderful for parents that have children who are late talkers, yet don't fit any other criteria for Autism or other labels.

I would definately recommend this book to anyone who has a late talking child in their family. Your child may not fit in the Einstein syndrome, but if he/she does, then this book is an absolute must!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Yet Limited
This book makes the excellent point that not all children with speech or language delays have cognitive deficits. And it is clear that there is a specific subset of children who have speech or language delays that have many specific elements in common -- the immediate relatives in analytical professions, etc. My first-born son, now 6, had speech and language issues until very recently, and if there were a "disorder" called Einstein Syndrome, he would be the one to have it. Now he is reading at the third grade level, at least, and has an excellent vocabulary, and that is just for starters. My real quarrel with this book is philisophical -- that the authors don't want these children "labelled," as if labelling were a bad thing. My first-born son sounded like a voluble Teletubbie until he was 4.5 years old, and because he was "motorized," and strong-willed, onlookers hurled labels on him like "ADHD," and "autism spectrum" that are clearly inapplicable. My child's behavior in kindergarten is unremarkable and his teacher is delighted with him and he is well-socialized. But if the author makes the very valid point that some children who talk late are bright or of average intelligence, he should not end the inquiry there. Some children in his study don't talk at all. They're silent. Some, like mine, are voluble -- they talk all the time. But until very late, you can't understand a word they're saying. Both my sons have these issues. Both my sons have high IQs. The unifying element between them they can make the sounds, and they know what they want to say, but they can't make their bodies obey their minds. Speech after all is a form of "planning," in the sense that planning is involved the series of movements that go into putting on a T-shirt, driving a stick-shift, dancing the Macarena, or executing a poomse or kata in martial arts. If the child knows what he wants his body to do (or say) but he cannot make his lips and tongue cooperate, the frustration is monumental. My second child is excellent at producing discrete sounds. He can make discrete sounds that older children can make. He can even connect them into one- or two-word sentences. But the six- or seven- (or longer) word sentences that he is trying to say are beyond him because he cannot make his mouth engage in the series of movements required to utter a string of phonemes. It may be that the Einstein Syndrome is a unified disorder, and the book makes an excellent case with regard to a discrete population of children who would otherwise be misdiagnosed. But the inquiry feels like watching someone begin a sentence and then stop talking too soon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful guide for parents
As the mom of an Aspie who is being bullied I found the information timely and helpful. Harrassment is a very complex issue, but this book breaks it down into all it's components nicely. The real life stories just broke your heart, but are all too familliar.

The aspect I found the most surprising was on the kids who want to help but instead are on the sidelines watching it happen, and why they act that way. Each situation is different, but I feel this book will be helpful to most parents with an Aspie child. Maybe one of the true life stories will speak to your situation. The insights given by one AS adult looking back on his bullied childhood was very helpful to me in our situation.

At the very least, it is comforting to know that as a parent you aren't alone in your pain!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Much Needed Resource

5-0 out of 5 stars Help and hope for women with PCOS
This book is the first to embrace the interconnectedness of body, mind and spirit for women with PCOS. It offers hope and help and suggests that being diagnosed with PCOS can in many cases be a good thing. PCOS offers a rare opportunity to see the future and change it through lifestyle changes and complementary therapies and medicines if needed. Looking through the window of PCOS this book offers an abundance of hope, knowing that the symptoms of today can be managed and complications of tomorrow, such as diabetes, heart disease, infertility, can be prevented. A solid performer I'd recommend this book to any women with PCOS.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent self-help tool
A great addition to the PCOS literature out there covering all the old ground but also adding in new and extremely helpful information about diet and self help techniques. It's beautifully written and clear and consistent throughout. As a PCOS sufferer myself I highly recommend it to other women with PCOS. Good to know that at long last this complex condition is being taken seriously and given the attention and respect it deserves. ... Read more
