4-0 out of 5 stars A help... Wow do I recognize this kid...
This book is written by a parent who has been there and done that. Advocating for our children is tough, but it is even tougher when so little is known about their needs by others. When others misunderstand why our children react the way that they do it is nice to be able to turn to some resources that educate and support us in our climb. My daughters principle for next year currently has my copy of this book. He admits that educators do not have a whole lot of knowledge base for dealing with these differently wired children. It was nice to have something to hand to him, and say here read this, then you'll have a better idea what we are facing in giving this sweet child what is needed.
More awareness is needed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly excellent book!
This book crams a tremendous amount of insight and information into a very 128 delightful pages! This is the book I recommend most highly for those who want to understand the dynamics of a child's autism. If you can read only one book about autism, this should be the one!

As a father, Stanton is able to able to add a great deal of personal insight to his excellent treatment of the science and medine of autism. The book is readable, yet deals with the issues in a sophisticated and very sensitive manner. The chapter on "Myths and Insights" is especially recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS A KEEPER
I was surprised when I first saw the size of this book. It seemed too small to cover such an important topic but I was wrong. This book is not only outstanding in its content but beautiful in its simplicity making it easy yet important reading for anyone working with an Autistic child.

Mr. Stanton's beautiful and clear description of Autism offers tremendous insight into the daily lives of these children and the need for parents to be involved in the education process if our children are to reach their full potential.

He also offers an understanding of how an Autistic child sees the world. Any teacher, family member or concerned friend can not help but benefit from reading this book. I will be keeping multiple copies of this book in my home library so that I can offer them as gifts to anyone who needs a greater understanding of this condition.

Thank you, Mr. Stanton. This book is a keeper. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for those with Sjogren's Syndrome
This is one of the best books out there on Sjogren's Syndrome. When I was first diagnosed with the illness I had never even heard of it...and this book helped me tremendously to understand my condition. Because Sjogren's Syndrome is an autoimmune disorder that can affect many different parts of the body, it can be very difficult to live with...however, this book goes into detail about every possible manifestation of the disease and how to cope with them. It's very comprehensive and very scientific at times, but well worth the read.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic Infomation
I found this book typically medically orientated. It was informative and accurate of the current treatments etc. but to be honest I am grateful I read this book after I had researched many forms of therapy.
Otherwise I would have been utterly depressed and without hope for my future. All the 'treatments' offer is symptom relief. There is no mention of improving immune status or joint repair i.e. healing. The list is endless, with the added bonus of all the drug side effects! And what about non invasive forms of pain relief like a simple heat pad? I thought the writers could have offered a lot more for sufferers. Most people flick through the tech stuff to get to the 'how to get well' section, let's be honest.
As a health care professional of traditional background, I am realising that there is a huge wealth of info from Alternative Medicine that I once dimissed like my colleagues. Holistic care is the way forward in my opinion. Oh yes, that and fish oil!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars It really helped me understand Sjogren's...
After being given a diagnosis of Sjogren's Syndrome, I really didn't know what it meant. I searched the internet, but really couldn't find any detailed information, so I hit Amazon to find a couple of books. This one was recommended by the Sjogren's Foundation, and was an excellent choice. I was able to see some detailed information, including a break down of the different symptoms. One negative note - it is very medically oriented, so you may need to read through it a few times. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Aspie (and all) marriages are works in progress
In this book a woman tells of the joys and struggles of living with a husband and children who have Asperger Syndrome. She also draws on the experiences of others who have had lived with "Aspie" partners. She honestly describes her own difficulties understanding and translating her husband's reactions into her own more emotionally demonstrative frame of reference.

I got the impression that she would have liked her husband to write more about his perspective on their relationship. He does give some information but he is not an "express your emotions" type of guy.

I have refered several people to this book. It is good for individuals who are learning to appreciate and deal with a family member with Aspergers. At the same time this book has something to say for any couple who despite vast differences, strive to understand each other and make a long term relationship work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best AS relationship book I've read
I have a son with autism and have thought about his future, especially when it comes to close relationships with others. This book is the most clear-cut and informational adult AS book out there. It has a fun tone to it and is easy to read. It makes the diagnostic criteria understandable. This book will be beneficial for spouses to read, as well as other close relationships--parents, business partners, siblings, friends. I highly recommend this book, not only to adults, but also parents who are anticipating the future with their AS and ASD children. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Ozonofff is one of the Best - A really good book.
I like this book. I am and adult with AS with an adult child on the spectrum. I'm sorry to say that this book is mainly about kids and teens with AS, but it does have some good points that are helpful to adults. If you are interested in parenting, this is a good book. I also highly recommend Karen Zelan's book "Between our world and theirs"

I have met Dr. Ozonoff, she get's big points from me for being a really nice person.

I really appreciate her working to break down the artificial barrier between the AS and HFA labels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book.
I have a son with AS in his third year at a major University in the Northeast. If you are reading this....you will love this book. Very informative, helpful, and very reassuring. I wish that I had found it years ago.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent thorough review of many options
There is a research thrust to this book (unsurprising given Ozonoff's research contributuons) that puts it a few notches above others in the market. Unquestionably this, plus a very fluent writing style, puts the book in a different class.

Unlike specific intervention texts, it does not lay out particular lesson plans but reviews methodological principles and best practices. As one would expect from the authors, the book is superb on descriptions of Autistic Disorders and prognosis. It has less advice on specific intervention strategies than one might like, but it does offer reviews of approaches.

So what does this book offer over the many others on the same bookshelf? Well it's horses for courses. It's avery balanaced book and certainly it doesn't understate the difficulties. I think that professionals and researchers will get a more out of it than others. However, there just isn't a whole pile written on AS and adolescence. Hence parents with a research interest will also gain a lot. Ultimately it is a slightly more 'high brow' book than notional equivalents. I have certainly found myself going back to it rather than the others over the past few months. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of material for researchers
The collection of papers in this volume are really top class. All the academic authors (there are a few snippets from parents) are very well published. The erudition shows in the breadth and depth of coverage. In such a rapidly hanginf field this is as near as you can come to frozen slice of current thinking. Unlike many anthologies, wherein authors expound on a particular niche obsession, the bulk of articles here offer broad overviews of work. The diagnosis and symptomatology debate is well presented in a series of papers opening the book. Leaving aside the technical academic ares, most paretns will find teh sections on langauge and interventions informative but downheartening. What come across is that adoelscents AS are so heterogenous as a group that even assessing theor conversational deficits is several dozen research projects in itself. The one area of the book that I personally was a little weak on recommendations related to interventions. The emphasis here was on methodological concerns and in fact often meta-methodological concerns. It is eqaully clear that many researchers regard the possibility of remission of AS has highly improbable - to be polite about it. Be that as it may, I reflected to myself a number of times during the course of reading the book (and being part of team looking into interventions), that if a fraction of the effort expended was applied to intervention research would be make better strides? It's a moot point, but if we lose hope we better close down science.

4-0 out of 5 stars This one is demanding!
On the jacket, Sally J Rogers, Ph D states, "...........Adults with AS and parents of children with AS will find it a veritable encyclopedia.............". I certainly agree with this statement, but would add some qualifying remarks. It is undoubtedly intended as a detailed text for scholars and specialists in Psychiatry and Psychology who are fully versed in scientific investigatory techniques, and lay readers including even many with good levels of general education, will find reading it a daunting task. However, dogged persistence may well be very rewarding. For those general readers who wish to gain some insight into what has become known as Asperger Syndrome, I would recommend that they first read less demanding texts in order to obtain some general grounding in the subject - such as 'Asperger's Syndrome' by Dr Tony Attwood.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for AS adults who are mid-career.
This book is excellent and very useful for adults with AS or professionals who work with them. I did not find it very helpful, however, for young adults who are just beginning to enter work. This book would be much more useful for adults who are already employed or have been employed for extended periods. For those people, I believe this book is excellent, helpful, easy to work through, and well-written. But if you are looking for something to help an adolescent or young adult with AS, this may contain a few tips, but it probably won't be very helpful.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good book for those with Asperger's
If you are someone who is, or know someone who is, suffering from Asperger's and you want to develop (better) job skills this is the book for you. The author has Asperger's, as is obvious from the structure, detail, and methodical nature of the book. Lots of forms - LOTS of forms. The book is designed to help the Asperger's person, their family, or a professional prepare for finding the Asperger's person the right job, get them through the interpersonal issues involved in interviewing, and deal with the demands of the job. The personal experiences of the author help color his presentation of the material and help illustrate for the reader that these things can be accomplished and the Asperger's person can thrive in the work environment with the right preparation and planning. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good scheduling advice but little on pragmatics
There is a wealth of advice in this book which all parents and teachers should find helpful. Plenty of checklists are offered and numerous cameo case histories are presented. The references are good but perhaps a bit limited (may be of importance only to researchers - no mention of central coherence deficit for instance). The main point of the book is the get schools to recognise and deal with stress build up in AS pupils before it boils over. Some of this will be familiar from Myles' other book on tantrum management.

The advice for high school transition is very practical. Make sure he knows the schedule, pin the timetable everywhere, fix routine reminders inside textbook covers, make sure he knows which teacher tolerates which behaviour, etc. It is all good sensible advice, though I wonder how deliverable it is in the ordinary school setting?

The authors touch on 'circle of friends', travelcards and a host of other supports, but ultimately pin their support hopes on resource teachers and an enlightened school policy. Unfortunately, this is where I begin to part company with the book. Few schools could make the quantum shifts expected, and the authors could have made much more of their advice if they had identified compromise strategies. Teachers are human, not superhuman. Also in my limited experience, parents of AS teenagers often have unrealistic expectations of their offspring's academic performance and that tends to obscure their grasp of daily school realities. The classic example here is the emphasis on the 'gifted' child who must attend a 'gifted' school irrespective of the impact that has on the school and child. The authors tend to cite gifted children examples a lot in their case studies. I don't think this is helpful.

Perhaps unconsciously the book also portrays the AS teenager as very much a ship in the night steering a lonely course from class to class, from teacher to teacher, etc. How to help out here? Again, while friendship strategies are touched upon, no elabaorated plan is developed. A weakness to my mind.

The book presents the AS teenager as very much a patient to be treated by the environment. I don't want to appear overly critical of the book. It is good that adolescent AS are being addressed, however, for the life of me I could not grasp why there is no section on teenage communication pragmatics. The authors simply skate by the whole problematic of communication skills. It seems that as long as your 'gifted' child is doing well academically and no one is hitting him, then we should be pleased. This struck me as a very lobsided developmental philosophy. Interestingly the book points out in footnote in the beginning that it will ignore sexuality and relationship issues. Ignore these? In a book dealing AS adolescents?

Overall this is a good book for advising on schedule construction and maintenance of the daily school routine. It has limitations and depending on your needs they may be significant or otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clearly written, practical guide
I have recently completed reading "Asperger's Syndrome and Adolescence: Practical Solutions for School Success", by Brenda Smith Miles and Diane Adreon. I found the book to be informative, and written so clearly that it may be recommended to parents, while thorough enough that it is of use to professionals both for its insight into the syndrome and its practical solutions. I would highly recommend this book to any clinician or parent who has a patient or child suffering from
Asperger's Syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of easy to implement solutions
This easy-to-read book fully describes the characteristics of Asperger Syndrome(AS) that have the greatest impact during the teen years and how to assist each individual with the appropriate level of support and structure. The importance of assessments in covered, letting parents and teachers know what diagnostic assessments are important, how to assess the characteristics of AS, how to do a curriculum based assessment, how to measure sensory-motor, social language, student learning traits and how to do a functional assessment on behavior.

I found chapter four (Supports for Students with Asperger Syndrome in Middle and High School)to be the most beneficial. The chapter provided goals that every person needs and how they can be reached by the individual with AS. Several academic modifications are shared along with social and environmental supports. In each secion the supports on explained in an easy to understand manner. I felt comfortable enough to implement the supports in the book right after I read the chapter.

A case study is shared in the last chapter. The entire chapter is full of examples of difficulties and how with the appropriate supports a child went successfully from third through eigth grade.

The entire book is full of examples, charts and graphs that you can use. I highly recommend this easy-to-read book. If you have a family member or work with individuals with AS this is an excellent resource. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Goldstein's approach cured me of CFS
I was housebound and often bedridden for 15 years with severe Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I tried many treatment approaches but nothing had any beneficial effect. I began working with Dr. Goldstein in 2001, following the experimental drug protocol set forth in this book. I was on the meds he prescribed for 3 years. During that time, I gradually recovered. I am now off the meds, working fulltime, and living a normal life. I know this approach does not work for everyone, but it has worked for many people with CFS, and I would recommend giving it serious consideration. Dr. Goldstein's hypothesis is that CFS is the result of a malfunction of the nervous system in which the neurons are over-responsive to stimuli. Sounds, smells, bright lights, stress, etc. all over-stimulate the over-reactive nervous system, causing fatigue and adrenal exhaustion. This is certainly consistent with my own experience of the illness. The meds reduce synaptic transmission. Over time, they can restore the nervous system to normal functioning.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice Try, But There Is a Better Theory
I have read different parts of the book. Certainly there is a neurological problem in CFS. But, there is another theory out. A Dr. Poesnecker who wrote Chronic Fatigue Unmasked 2000 is treating and healing patients of CFS or CFIDS left and right. His theory: The adrenals are the origin of the problem. He uses adrenal extract not cortisone to heal his patients in a very slow but sure manner. I am one of his patients. I have CFS. I also have adrenal insufficiency. A medical test proved it. I am in the process of being treated with adrenal extract. My insomnia is now gone and also my racing thoughts at night. I am now looking forward to a complete recovery.

1-0 out of 5 stars Goldstein is wrong.
He is out to make money on the sick, IMHO.

His theory is all hot air. I do not know of one person helped by him.

Sorry. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Practical advice, but lots of metaphors and ambiguity
This book contains a lot of practical advice on creating an autistic-friendly environment for yourself or a family member who is autistic. It encompasses everything from social skills to the arrangement of the home, and offers real-life suggestions for all of these things.

I am planning on using some of these suggestions in order to make my own home more livable given my sensory issues. The ideas about building a place to hide were particularly useful, as I have not had the ability to hide since my health deteriorated and my body lost the flexibility and resilience of childhood (I used to hide in closets and clothes hampers, but that would be a painful exercise in futility now). I plan to build an adult-friendly hiding place at the earliest opportunity, because I agree with the author that such places can be an essential part of dealing with overload.

The book also tries to emphasize the positive aspects of being autistic, which I saw as a good thing. Unfortunately, it falls into the trap of emphasizing specific autistic traits as universal positive ones, when in fact they are not universal. To say things like "We're good because we have average to above-average IQs" implies that those autistic people who do not are not so good. These sections also mention strengths, like visual thinking, that are nowhere close to universal in any sort of autistic person. This, to me, weakened rather than strengthened the case for autistic people being good as we are, because it made our adequacy sound as if it was dependent on certain abilities.

A problem I had with the book was its excessive use of complex metaphorical language. I understand that a lot of autistic people can use more of such language than we can understand, but I found it very difficult to get through this book when I had to ponder out the meaning of a metaphor every few paragraphs. It took me four readings just to finish it without getting overloaded and giving up. This was made worse by the lack of sufficient editing typical of this publisher, who left several misspellings, grammatical errors, and ambiguous sentences in the text.

The author goes back and forth on the issue of pretending to be normal, and of the developmental path of autistic people. She portrays being autistic as being okay. Then she portrays getting as close as possible to non-autistic as optimal. Then she talks about the hardships she faces specifically because of her ability to pass for normal, particularly the very real one whereby people mistake her acting job for reality and cannot believe the real issues she faces daily. There is no clear resolution of this issue, but the book provides some tips on acting normal in social situations (such as finding ways of mimicking others' behavior in a slightly modified fashion in order to fit the body language of a group) that could be useful in moderation, but detrimental if compulsively adhered to. At the same time, the author laments her daughter's strong desire to be like everyone else. There are a lot of mixed messages here.

While not having the same sort of autism I do -- we share some traits in common, but she has difficulties I don't, and seems completely oblivious to many of the difficulties I do have -- is not the fault of the author, it has definitely affected the readability and applicability of this book to my life. We are so different that, while I can clearly see the essential autisticness of her writing, it is nearly as alien to me as non-autistic people's writing is. Some other people I know have found this to be the case for them as well, while others find her writing unusually *easy* to read.

I would suggest reading some of her other writing to find out how easy this book would be to read and apply to your life or the life of your child. I would recommend this book much more highly for people who can identify with the general patterns the author describes, than for those who can't, although it can contain some useful practical information for all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I'm beginning to understand
It wasn't until I read this book that I finally understood some of what my Asperger's son is going through. Although I have read many clinically oriented books, and I cognitively understood what was going on, it was this book that helped me to emotionally understand him.

This book led me to level with his siblings about his problem and add them to his support team rather than leaving them in the wake of his embarassing behavior and telling them to leave him alone. This book spoke very powerfully about needing and giving comfort to those who are scared -- and all of us are scared of something sometime. The author spoke convincingly of comfort packs that a person can take with them if they anticipate stress and need to be calmed. After reading that, I looked quite differently at my teenagers' Walkmans and my Asperger's son's unusual choice of modern equivalents to his old security blanket.

This book had a very positive effect on how my family has responded to all of our children, but especially my son with Asperger's.

The fact that this book was written by someone with Asperger's has another impact: hope for a supportive and fullfilling adult life for my son.

I would recommend this book to someone who is somewhat familier with the disorder. It wouldn't be the first book to read, but maybe the second or third.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Liane Holliday Willey
I am the "significant other" of a newly diagnosed Aspie. Last week I ended our one year plus relationship because I just couldn't face another day of trying to solve the NT/Aspie puzzle. I was trapped in a vicious cycle of confussion, frustration, anger, resentment and guilt. I searched the Internet endlessly for an answer...what is Asperger's Syndrome? The clinical definitions and observations were useless. I wanted to know why the man I loved chose to repeat previous conversations verbatim, mimic the gestures and actions of others and stand uncomfortably close to complete strangers. This book gave me the answers and it gave me hope. It has become my "owner's guide" or my "operating manual" if you will. Thanks to Liane Holliday Wiley I have found renewed strength to fight for the man I love. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A new look at self-care
I found this text to be a refreshing change to the sometimes dry subject of body mechanics. By emphasizing awareness, Body Mechanics for Manual Therapists takes an innovative look at the functional tasks required of a therapist. Active self-care including better positions for standing, sitting, bending, lifting, pushing and pulling, and applying pressure are covered. Self-care and injury prevention are also covered in the "Tools of the trade" chapter. This is the book that will help prevent burnout, a common reason many therapists give up their bodywork careers.

Where was this book when I went to massage school? I was not taught proper body mechanics when I went to massage school. Consequently, I developed poor movement habits. I had back and hand pain and, after only 2 years, was ready to close my practice. Around this time a friend told me about this book - and thank god she did. It saved my back, hands and my career. I am now working without pain and am happy to say that I plan to have a long and prosperous massage practice! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Highest recommendations!
Although I have neither of these conditions, I know people who do. This book has given me great insight for which I'm grateful. Ms. Shomon has done it again -- written a book that makes sense and educates without being dry and boring. Thank you!

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Want to Live Well
Just finished reading the book and feel very charged up. The information provided is well organized and well reasoned and it makes sense! I'm actually believing again that it is possible to live well with fibromyalgia.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Terrific and Comprehensive Book I Wish I'd Had From Day 1!
I got my copy and sat down and read every word right away (not having a fibro-fog day today!), and had to come over here right now to write this. All I can say is, "WOW!" But I really wish I had this book 4 years ago when I was first diagnosed with fibromyalgia. It only took me 3 doctors over 2 years to get diagnosed...hah...I'm one of the lucky ones I guess. I wish I had this book, because the overview of symptoms would have already helped me cut to the chase and go right to a doctor who would figure this out more quickly. As it was, I went to my primary care doctor, and an infectious disease guy, and an orthopedics doctor, and even a chiropracter, before I finally saw a holistic doctor who specialized in fibromyalgia. Even then, I was so tired, and everything hurt really bad, and the last thing in the world I could stand was the idea of having to start surfing a hundred different web sites and books trying to figure out what I should be doing. Even though I had a good doctor, he didn't have much time to explain everything.

Mary Shoman did all the homework that I would like to have done when I was so sick, but when you're flat on your back on the couch and you can barely move, it's kind of hard to do much. She talks about regular drugs, vitamins, herbs, diet, alternative things you can do, and includes a list of experts from around the country who specialize in treating fibromyalgia and CFIDS. There's a long list of web sites -- I'm going to start checking them out as soon as I finish writing this review -- and suport groups even.

I've read a few of the books on fibromyalgia and they were pretty good, but this one really made sense to me. It doesn't tell me that one particular thing will cure me, but it goes through how I can find out what's going to work best for me. And it was really good to see that I'm already doing some of the things she talks about in the book, so that tells me that my doctor and I aren't totally off base. I'm about 75% back to where I was before I got fibro, but I want to feel 100%.

I can't wait to bring it in to my doctor to talk about some more things we might be able to try that I read about! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good and informative
Nice booklet that goes into a lot of detail for such a little publication. It prompted me to get Jeffrey Bland's Book- "The 20 day Rejuvenation Diet Program" This booklet packs allot of very good and important information into a small space.
I highly recommend it. Leaky Gut is a very important and serious condition to address. Don't wait any longer!

3-0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love this book...
...it is such a great premise, and the author seems so thoughtful! However, it just isn't useful for our family. We've already discussed the rules covered here (except for some of the school-related ones, since we're homeschooling)with our 6-year-old son in greater detail than is found here. Two paragraphs of advice is not going to prepare my son to attend a wedding, for example.

Maybe as my son gets older, we'll find that he would appreciate hearing this advice from another child rather than from his parents. If that happens, I'll buy the book again (I'm returning it now).

This would be a great book to have in a support group lending library for a child to peruse, but it just isn't useful enough for our particular situation to keep on our shelf. I hope Ms. Myles writes a book on living on one's own when she's older--by the time my son is ready to do that, I imagine he would greatly prefer to follow a peer's advice than his mother's!

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a book for children with Asperger Syndrome
Haley Myles explains in a easy to understand manner what a child can do when they get into those 'what should I do' moments. Topics are covered that every child needs to know and gives advice in a straightforward child friendly way. Nine-year-old Haley Myles writes with a special sensitivity, understanding the difficulties that children with Asperger Syndrome face. This book is an excellent resource for children with Asperger Syndrome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource to deal with life's events for those with AS!
I work with children with Asperger Syndrome and have highly recommended this book to my families that are in need of solutions to daily issues. It an easy-to-read format written by a young girl who has thought to answer questions that I would have never even thought to ask. Lot of details...if you have a child with AS...you know that he or she is probably into those details. :) Perfectly written for a child or teen's audience, this book covers topics such as how to locate family if you get lost from them in a store, manners, conversations, and much more! ...
