Product Description
You know that your migraine isn't just a headache. But you may not know that migraine actually is a neurological disease. Affecting one in five women, one in twenty men, and one in twenty children, it's a debilitating, complex, and chronic condition that manifests in a combination of symptoms that can include excruciating head pain as well as other distinctive physical and emotional effects. Yet it's also a disease that you can get control of, improve, and manage, as Dr. Carolyn Bernstein has discovered in her seventeen years as a Harvard Medical School faculty member and practicing neurologist.

Praised for her excellence and compassion, the founder of the Women's Headache Center near Boston, and a migraine sufferer herself, Dr. Bernstein has helped hundreds of her patients get better. Now, with The Migraine Brain, the most comprehensive, up-to-the-minute book on migraines ever written, you will be able to do the same -- reduce the frequency and intensity of your migraines, learn how to prevent and curtail them and how to recover from them more quickly, and mitigate migraine's effects on every aspect of your life: in the workplace and at home and during sex and travel. Every migraine is different because everyone who gets a migraine has a distinctive "Migraine Brain" with its own sensitivities and triggers. That's why it's so important for you to develop a personalized wellness plan to radically reduce the number and severity of your migraines.

Dr. Bernstein also explains why migraines happen, why they are so often misdiagnosed, and why so few people get the right treatment for them. She reveals the latest research that shows that Migraine Brains share a hypersensitivity to stimuli -- the Migraine Brain can actually look different from others on a brain scan -- and is more likely to experience a cascade of neurological reactions that give rise to the common clusters of migraine symptoms. This breakthrough medical knowledge makes treatment and recovery possible with new migraine-specific drugs as well as with complementary treatments such as yoga, biofeedback, and an exercise regimen.

With the extraordinarily thorough recommendations of The Migraine Brain in your hands, you will be fully equipped with all the latest information you need to understand migraines and to help your family and co-workers understand that migraine isn't just a headache: it's a serious, yet treatable disease. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars this book was so helpful

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful
I am so happy I came across this book. It has been my go to book and I have learned a lot about migraines. I have learned about how to make my migraines more manageable and ways to avoid triggers. I still get migraines, but now I know other things to try and am not always taking medications. That is one on the biggest reasons I went looking for a book like this. I was tried of taking medications that would knock me out, or being so dependent on them. I have also added feverfew and magnesium into my daily life. The book teaches you how to make small changes in your life that will help with the migraine suffering and most of the time they are free things.Just have to try them and see what works for you since everyone has different types of migraine pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars MIGRAINE RELIEF!
This is an excellent book to read/use as a reference for anyone suffering from a MIGRAINE!

5-0 out of 5 stars best book on migraine
This is the best book on migraines that I have read. The author is a fellow migraineur and a neurologist who has thoroughly researched the problems associated with migraines, and the many treatments now available for migraine sufferers. She takes extra care to address women migraineurs who suffer from this disorder 3 times more often than men (although she does also address male sufferers). The book is written in an understanding but informative manner, acknowledging that migraine can be a disabling disorder, but giving many strategies for dealing with it. These include both the latest medical techniques as well as non-medical approaches for treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars A helpful, supportive book
This book made a big difference in my life. I've had migraines for about 7 years, since the end of high school. In all that time, I haven't found any other resources that are as compassionate and empathetic as this book. Dr. Bernstein tells you early on that she's a migraine sufferer, and you can tell that she really understands your pain. For that alone, I'm thankful.

The basic message of the book isthat your migraines aren't your fault -- they're symptoms of a neurological disease, and you deserve the same treatment as anyone else with that type of illness. She engages the reader in thoughtful discussion about both medicinal and non-medicinal approaches to migraine treatment (eg. she talks at length about biofeedback training and yoga). My experience with the first headache specialist I saw is that he tried to just drug me up without listening to my concerns; in contrast, Dr. Bernstein clearly respects individual patients' attitudes toward medicine, and presents lots of non-drug headache management strategies. While much of the material in the book was not new to me (eg. don't skip meals during the day, or you'll get a migraine), it's a comprehensive synthesis of current medical knowledge within an empathetic framework. ...
