Editorial Review

Product Description
This up-to-date and comprehensive set of two CD-ROM discs provides a superb collection of official Federal government documents on melanoma: signs and symptoms, diagnosis, lab tests, treatment and management options, and ongoing clinical research. Every aspect of the disease is thoroughly covered. Melanoma is a disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the skin cells called melanocytes (cells that color the skin). Melanocytes are found throughout the lower part of the epidermis. They make melanin, the pigment that gives skin its natural color. When skin is exposed to the sun, melanocytes make more pigment, causing the skin to tan, or darken. When melanoma starts in the skin, the disease is called cutaneous melanoma. Melanoma may also occur in the eye and is called intraocular or ocular melanoma. Melanoma can occur anywhere on the body. In men, melanoma is often found on the trunk (the area from the shoulders to the hips) or the head and neck. In women, melanoma often develops on the arms and legs. Melanoma usually occurs in adults, but it is sometimes found in children and adolescents. For patients, practical information is provided in clearly written patient education documents. For medical professionals, doctor references and texts have detailed technical information and clinical background material. Documents from the National Cancer Institute, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Medline, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) are included. In addition to disease-specific information, there is extensive coverage of the broad subject of cancer and its prevention and treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, advanced treatments, managing side effects). There is no other reference that is as fast, convenient, and portable - everything you need to know, from the federal sources you trust.Since navigating the Internet to find medical information can be confusing, our exclusive "Guide to Leading Medical Websites 2009" has updated links to the 67 best sites! Product Description
Chuck Myer is an urban planner, freelance writer, playwright, consultant to arts, government, and religious organizations, and an actor and musician. He is described by many as a "Renaissance Man." Melanoma Melodrama is Chuck's graceful and courageous narrative of his battle with cancer. You will learn about a potentially fatal misdiagnosis doctors commonly make for malignant melanoma, about the course of the disease, and about available treatments as reflected in the author's own experience. Most importantly, you will come to understand from this first-person view how vital it is to face the diagnosis resolutely and assertively, and to prepare for the difficulties that accompany treatments for the disease. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars More than just a story...
As a collaborator on musicals with Chuck, I had not only a working but a personal relationship with Chuck. We spent many, many hours creatingartistic projects together. It is clear to me that "Melonoma Melodrama" is more than a story of one man's struggle with cancer; it is an outpouring -- through a series of newspaper articles he wrote for publication in the Sacramento Bee -- of the joys and frustrations, the humor and the tragedy connected with medical professionals and pharmaceuticals.Chuck wrote a personal column quite regularly, and this book reflects his tongue-in-cheek perspective on his own health. To get a more well-rounded sense of Chuck's life and work, check out his columns with the San Jose Mercury News as well as with the United Methodist Church. To my knowledge, he wrote only one other book:a history of Placer County.

5-0 out of 5 stars From his grateful wife
As Chuck's wife, I lived this journey of cancer treatments and loss with him. He put his whole heart, mind and soul into this book, his last completed work of art before he died. The last few chapters were written after brain surgery, and it took all he had to produce them. Now that I have been grieving and healing for almost a year, I have some new perspective as I read the book again; I have more appreciation for the honest, poignant and loving words he left behind for us all.

5-0 out of 5 stars From the Heart and Soul of a Renaissance Man...
Chuck's story not only touches those who have been through the rigors of chemo and cancer, but all those who pick up this book. Written with warmth and compassion, Chuck takes us through his life and trials with melanoma and makes you laugh, cry, smile and makes you just want to hug the next person you see. Thank you Chuck for sharing your life with us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Legacy of Strength
Chuck Myer has given the reader his first-person insights into battling one of the most disastrous types of cancer, malignant melanoma. Although the subject is certainly not funny, Chuck has brought his wry sense of humor to bear on the subject, as well as his skills as a writer. From the first inkling of the disease through treatments (in hospital and self-administered by injection at home) and a roller coaster of worry, dismay, strength, hope, and relapse. Chuck's memoir will serve not only as his own legacy -- or rather one legacy of a varied and productive life -- but as inspiration to cancer patients and their friends and families. The book might also be of great value to medical professionals at all levels (whether physician, nurse, or aide) in gaining insight into the experiences of their patients.

Disclosure: At Chuck's request, in order to make this book available to as wide an audience as feasible in a timely manner, I published this edition. It has been a privilege to do so. ... Read more

Product Description
Abstract: A 6-year-old girl was seen for a mole that had been present for 2 years on the extensor surface of her left knee. It had darkened in color and increased in size during the preceding 6 months. Physical examination revealed a symmetrical 4-mm brown-black nodule with slight variegation of color (figure 1).

The lesion was excised. Histopathologic examination showed an acanthotic epidermis with epithelioid melanocytes forming nests of various sizes and minor variation in nuclear size and chromatin pattern. Focal Kamino bodies, rare mitoses, telangiectasias, and scattered melanophages were also identified in the specimen (figures 2 and 3). The lesion appeared to be completely excised with a narrow lateral margin. Initially, both malignant melanoma and Spitz nevus were considered by the pathologist. After a second opinion was obtained, a diagnosis of pigmented Spitz nevus was made. ... Read more
