5-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Reference for Meniere's Disease
This book is the most complete compilation of information on Meniere's Disease that I have come across in 24 years! It is easy-to-read and answers so many of the questions that arise concerning this disease. Anyone who has Meniere's Disease should read this book!

3-0 out of 5 stars Outdated and dangerous
Good intentions prevail throughout this book; good high level advice on coping is shared. But like most reviews of the book, it's outdated. It's becoming common knowledge that Meniere's is caused by a viral infection and can be cured in 85%~90% of cases by taking Valtrex 1000mg or Zovirex 800mg three times a day for 4~6 weeks. These drugs are not even mentioned in this book and could lead many a reader to consider drastic, ineffective and irreversible surgical management which is still being pushed by many lagging doctors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for anyone with Menieres
This book was such a blessing in my life. I read it over and over when I first got it.So much of the information I was already experiencing but didnt' know why. I learned more from this book and my online support group than from any doctor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Scope of Information
Once diagnosed with Meniere's, I began the search for information.Much is out there, but nothing was as informative as this book.The author gives you everything you could possibly want or need to know.It is very helpful in validating the more 'minor' Meniere's symptoms your physician may not have explained to you as being due to this disease. It will also give you options that range from traditional to holistic treatments. Should you reach the surgical level, this book diagrams and explains the options, risks, and outcomes to result in aninformed decision. I was on the fast-track to surgery, but after reading the book, I found the drug betahistine mentioned.I discussed this with my specialist, and he consented in giving it a try. While this drug therepy dosen't work for everyone, it gave me my life back. Might I have found this therapy in another book?Maybe...but I didn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book is very well written and organized.It covers Meniere's in great detail and has references you can turn to for further information.I found the exhaustive list of symptoms and the explantions of their causes particularly helpful.If you have Meniere's or treat patients with the disease, you should have this book.(I work for medical book publishers, so I don't hand out praise lightly.) ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Nicely presented medical papers; but no we don't understand MD yet.
As an informed Meniere's Disease patient for 40 years now, I bought this book hoping it might describe some new advances or understandings of Meniere's Disease. The Description given by Amazon for this book is rather terse, so I had to hope and guess.

The book is nicely bound and printed.It has 14 papers by various authors on aspects of the current conventional medical knowledge of Meniere's Disease.There is no ground breaking new research or evidence or treatment method.The book is not worth it for for my "solutions oriented" purposes.Treatment focuses more on the vertigo than the hearing loss.As is typical in a modest sized volume (156 pages plus Index) containing many papers by various authors, it is more of a survey of current knowledge from various perspectives than it is a ground breaking insight in depth of some particular aspect.

The papers and authors are:
1. Historical Perspectives, by Marc Eisen
2. Epidemiology of Meniere's Disease, by Raj Dedhia
3. Pathophysiology of Meniere's Disease, by Michael Ruckenstein
4. Histopathology, by Steven Rauch
5. Clinical Presentation of Meniere's Disease, by John Chi and Michael Ruckenstein
6. Differential Diagnosis, by Jason Leibowitz and Micahel Ruckenstein
== Diagnostic Evaluation ==
7. Audiometric Testing, by Michael Ruckenstein
8. Vestibular and Balance Function Testing, by Neil Shepard
9. Other Diagnostic Tests, by Michael Ruckenstein
== Treatment ==
10. Medical Treatment of Meniere's Disease, by Jessica Shen and Michael Ruckenstein
11. Surgical Therapy in the Treatment of Meniere's Disease, by Michael Ruckenstein and Marc Cohen
12. Rehabilitation of the Patient With Meniere's Disease, by Elizabeth Grace
13. Psychological Attributes of Meniere's Disease, by Jeffery Staab
14. Challenging Cases, by Michael Ruckenstein
15. Future Directions, by Michael Ruckenstein

The final paper, Future Directions (a brief 2 pages long) states "we really do not have an understanding as to the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms responsible for Meniere's Disease", and for "Treatment" states "Unless the pathophysiology is better elucidated, it is highly unlikely we will develop any specific treatments for the disorder." He further states "I suspect that one day, we will look back at these treatments as being quite primitive."

I agree with the author on these conclusions, at least so far as "modern Western medicine" goes.

In an odd way, these conclusions of inadequate understanding may be positive in the long run.The book does discredit some classic hypotheses for the mechanisms of Meniere's Disease, such as endolymphatic hydrops (page 15), and thus may open the door to a complete rethinking of this disease.Whether, or when, modern Western medicine can walk through this door is not yet known.

If this is the sort of book you're looking for, it is well done.I can't recommend it so much for the patient who is focused more on what is known and what treatments do work.The right researcher might find this book quite provocative.

There was one positive note that I noticed in my skimming of the book.It states somewhere (I've lost the page now) that hearing loss is seldom total, rather bottoms out at perhaps 50 db loss. This suggests to me that once my second ear, which has only been failing recently, settles down, then hearing aids would be of some use.To be clear here, the book has no discussion of hearing aids that I've noticed; I'm just speculating. ... Excerpt: Ménière's disease (pronounced ) is a disorder of the inner ear that can affect hearing and balance to a varying degree. It is characterized by episodes of vertigo and tinnitus and progressive hearing loss, usually in one ear. It is named after the French physician Prosper Ménière, who first reported that vertigo was caused by inner ear disorders in an article published in 1861. The condition affects people differently; it can range in intensity from being a mild annoyance to a chronic, lifelong disability. An audiogram illustrating low pitch hearing lossThe symptoms of Ménière's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, so-called "classic Ménière's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Ménière's often begins with one symptom, and gradually progresses. However, not all symptoms must be present for a doctor to make a diagnosis of the disease. Several symptoms at once is more conclusive than different symptoms at separate times. Attacks of vertigo can be severe, incapacitating, and unpredictable and can last anywhere from minutes to hours, but no longer than 24 hours. This combines with an increase in volume of tinnitus and temporary, albeit significant, hearing loss. Hearing may improve after an attack, but often becomes progressively worse. Nausea, vomiting, and sweating sometimes accompany vertigo, but a...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=55994 ... Read more

Product Description
Although many theories about Meniere's disease exist and much research is being done, its cause remains undetermined and no fundamental treatment method has been established yet. The articles in this special issue range from Meniere's disease epidemiology and clinical research to inner ear biochemistry, regenerative medicine and genetics. Microanalysis of stress-related gene expression and questionnaire analysis in patients indicate stress involvement for the onset of Meniere's disease. Endolymph metabolic disorder was suggested by single nucleotide palymorphisms in the potassium channel genes in patients. The effects of lithium on AQP2 expression in the rat inner ear indicate that the VP-AQP2 system really works for water homeostasis in the inner ear. A new method for drug application is proposed as a means to prevent inner ear damage or to facilitate recovery from inner ear disease. ... Read more
