"Interesting collection of pieces."
—Gainesville Sun

"Illuminates the history of mental retardation in America, a subject that has largely been ignored by scholars. This volume goes far beyond the history of institutional care, and covers such subjects as the role of families, changes in concepts of retardation and educational theory, and the role of the state. Mental Retardation in America will contribute toward a new understanding of the subject and serve as a stimulus to further research."

—Gerald N. Grob, Rutgers University

"The book will be of value to scholars concerned with the newly emerging history of disability."
—Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences"The anthology provides sound links between the shaping of knowledge and circumstances from reports to legislatures, theses, and classifications of feebl-minded."
—History of Education Quarterly

”Noll ad Trent’s book succeeds in deepening appreciation of the complex history of mental retardation and in suggesting issues for further study, making it an essential resource for scholars of disability history. Its accessible style and clear organization will also make it of interest to the lay reader...”
—Nursing History ReviewThe expressions "idiot, you idiot, you're an idiot, don't be an idiot," and the like are generally interpreted as momentary insults. But, they are also expressions that represent an old, if unstable, history. Beginning with an examination of the early nineteenth century labeling of mental retardation as "idiocy," to what we call developmental, intellectual, or learning disabilities, Mental Retardation in America chronicles the history of mental retardation, its treatment and labeling, and its representations and ramifications within the changing economic, social, and political context of America.

Mental Retardation in America includes essays with a wide range of authors who approach the problems of retardation from many differing points of view. This work is divided into five sections, each following in chronological order the major changes in the treatment of people classified as retarded. Exploring historical issues, as well as current public policy concerns, Mental Retardation in America covers topics ranging from representations of the mentally disabled as social burdens and social menaces; Freudian inspired ideas of adjustment and adaptation; the relationship between community care and institutional treatment; historical events, such as the Buck v. Bell decision, which upheld the opinion on eugenic sterilization; the evolution of the disability rights movement; and the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 1990.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
I don't understand why this book has received bad reviews.I found it to be an excellent reader with some real gems, among them Deborah Metzel's "Historical Social Geography" and Katherine Castles' "Nice, Average Americans".The editors have selected a body of historical writing that reflects the evolution of the social perception of developmental disabilities. It's very readable and not overly editorialized.Quite to the contrary, the last few selections suggest "progress" from institutional to community models is much less progressive than some would like to believe.

2-0 out of 5 stars The book that never stops..
This book is poorly written and has very little historical value.Clearly the author failed to take out his biases for the scope of his argument.I also found it to drone on endlessly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explains a Lot!
Asa pre-service special education teacher, I sometimes wonder how our way of treating people who have disabilities came about. This book offers some great answers. This book is incredibly readable, even for the lay reader. I would highly recommend this book to those interested in working with peope who have disabilities or the student of history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, lots of information.
This book is great. It is a quick easy read, but has all the essential information. It goes through diagnosis, prevalence, and then spends a great deal on instructional methods and strategies. It defines key vocabulary, and even has a pre and post test so you can assess the knowledge you gain. As a soft cover it is less than 1/2 the price of the hard cover version, which made me wonder who would still buy the hardcover. This book is written from a practical stand point.I am both a teacher of students with disabilities and an instructor for a University teaching new special education teachers. There are too many texts on this subject to go shooting blind trying to find a good one. This text would make a great addition to any educator's library. It is hard to believe the amount of information contained in such a small package. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick reference, or a better understanding of the field. ... Read more

Book Description
What measures can parents and advocates take to insure that people who have mental retardation live full, rewarding lives from infancy to old age?

Understanding Mental Retardation explores a diverse group of disorders from their biological roots to the everyday challenges faced by this special population and their families. With parents and those who care for people who have mental retardation in mind, Patricia Ainsworth and Pamela C. Baker write in a style that is at once accessible, informative, and sympathetic to the concerns of those affected.

The authors provide practical information that will assist families and other advocates in obtaining needed services. They discuss assessment and treatment, education and employment, social and sexual adjustment, as well as regulatory and legal issues.

The book covers the causes of mental retardation, the signs and symptoms of the most common forms of these disorders, and issues of prevention. For the sake of comparison, the book describes basic concepts of normal human development and references the history of Western civilization's responses to those with mental retardation.

Understanding Mental Retardation sheds new light on mental illnesses that can complicate the lives of those with mental retardation, and the way symptoms of mental illness may appear confused or masked in a patient with mental retardation.Along with information on treatments and diagnoses, the book offers contact information for governmental resources, as well as a brief summary of the legal issues pertaining to mental retardation in America. ... Book Description
This book contains the most widely used definition of mental retardation in the U.S. and is based on 10 years of use and research by a panel of 11 international experts.

What is mental retardation? How is it diagnosed? Can IQ scores alone determine if a person has mental retardation? What is the cut-off IQ score when deciding whether a person has mental retardation? Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to ban execution of persons with mental retardation on June 22, 2002, states and courts grapple with these tough questions and more.

The 10th edition lays out a complete system of diagnosing mental retardation, easily understood by practitioners, public officials, and even families. Further, the book also provides an in-depth analysis on how supports can help better the lives of persons with mental retardation.

Mental Retardation also comes with a workbook containing key terms, examples, a case study, and ready-to-use forms that make it easier for practitioners to understand and implement the definition. ... Read more

Book Description
Recent advances in neuroscience and genetics have greatly expanded our understanding of the brain and of the etiological factors involved in developmental delay and mental retardation. At the same time, the human genome project has yielded a wealth of information on DNA sequencing, regulation of gene expression, epigenetics, and functional aspects of the genome, which newly propels investigation into the pathogenesis of mental retardation. This book makes readily available current knowledge on the subject and applies it to clinical medicine, providing information essential to neurologists, geneticists, physicians and pediatricians as they search for the causes of mental handicap in their patients.Introductory chapters cover normal and abnormal brain structure, neurogenesis, neuronal proliferation, and signal transduction.Latter chapters delve into discussions of both the environmental factors that may lead to neurocognitive deficits and the cytogenetic, biochemical and molecular defects specifically associated with mental retardation. One chapter reviews gene involvement in non-syndromic mental retardation, autism, and language deficits, as well as multifactorial and genetically complex inheritance. The text concludes with a clinically practical discussion of carrier detection, presymptomatic diagnosis, and treatment of various genetic diseases through enzyme therapy, substrate deprivation, and the use of hemapoietic stem cells. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A practical and hopeful book for parents
This book is different. It's not the technical, dry or depressing book.
The writing is practical, straightforward and hopeful. It is the best book on special needs/mental retardation I've read so far.I wish I'd read this one first.
This book adresses the initial concerns, testing, the roles of the therapists and even the IEP.The book ends with practical parenting advice and tips. Many of the comments from parents throughout the book hit home and were a breath of fresh air.
This book belongs in the library of a special needs/m.r. parent-and probably their extended family too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for Parents of Children with Mental Retardation
Our Early Intervention Coordinator gave this book to me the week after our daughter was diagnosed with MR.This book is an excellent first resource for parents. It is very readable and easy to understand. You can readonly the areas you are concerned about or cover to cover. In attempting tobe a parent's guide, they include quotes from parents of children with MRthrough each section.I found this so helpful that one night I foundmyself up until 1AM just going through the book and reading what"other parents" had to say.Chapters cover diagnosis, theevaluation process, daily living, legal rights and advocacy.

Afterreading this book, I found that I was more informed and better able to askthe right questions. It also helped me to understand what I was feelingabout the diagnosis. There is even a description of types of MR andcauses, etc.I would recommend it as a first resource for any parent wholearns their child has MR. ...
