James W. Trent uses public documents, private letters, investigative reports, and rare photographs to explore our changing perceptions of mental retardation over the past 150 years. He contends that the economic vulnerability of mentally retarded people (and their families), more than the claims made for their intellectual or social limitations, has determined their institutional treatment. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars COMPREHENSIVE, EXCELLENT HISTORY
James Trent has written an excellent comprehensive history of mental retardation in the U.S.Readers will also find pertinent photographs, and a full bibiography. This volume is a resource for students, human-services professionals, and historians.I highly recommend it.

2-0 out of 5 stars I found this book quite interesting but very technical
I had to read this book for a report for school.Otherwise, I would have never picked it up.It took me a long time to get through the book, because I found it to be quite technical. However,it was fascinating tofind out what these people went through. It's scary to think that thereactually was a comittee that was set up in 1914 with the sole purpose ofirradicating the mentally retarded from this world!!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's superb!
I have been teaching classes on the history of residential facilities in America for several years. This book brings a new light to me, and to all of us who work for people with disabilities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading for everyone in the field.
After working in this field for ten years, I finally found something that gives me a history of what has happened to those that came before me and I am making it required reading for my staff.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was the best book on this topic I ever read.
I spent a good deal of time in libraries looking for information that wasALL CONTAINED IN THIS BOOK. Trent does an amazing job of piecing together asocial/medical history of mental retardation. No medical book, no firstperson type accounts, no histories of institutionalization touched thisbook. This book draws from all the different disciplines to present acomplete picture (as good history books do). It is highly readable andengaging. It's academic and rigorous yet entertaining. I recommend thisbook wholeheartedly. ... Read more

I still do not have the book. The bookseller said he was overnighting the book a week ago. Still haven't seen it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, lots of information.
This book is great. It is a quick easy read, but has all the essential information. It goes through diagnosis, prevalence, and then spends a great deal on instructional methods and strategies. It defines key vocabulary, and even has a pre and post test so you can assess the knowledge you gain. As a soft cover it is less than 1/2 the price of the hard cover version, which made me wonder who would still buy the hardcover. This book is written from a practical stand point.I am both a teacher of students with disabilities and an instructor for a University teaching new special education teachers. There are too many texts on this subject to go shooting blind trying to find a good one. This text would make a great addition to any educator's library. It is hard to believe the amount of information contained in such a small package. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick reference, or a better understanding of the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Teaching students with mental retardation
It's never easy to receive a diagnosis of mental retardation, especially if that report is about your own child. With each diagnosis my daughter received, I have made a habit of doing my own research alongside the pamphlets the doctors or therapists supplied. This book gives practical solutions to some of the issues faced when educating the mentally retarded, from mild to moderate to severe. What I especially appreciated is the fact that the authors kept a positive attidude when it comes to education and success for children with MR. I highly recommend this book for parents as well as professionals; it's easy to understand without the technical jargon which is found in many of the textbooks I've purchased. If you're looking for something to read which places MR in a positive light, this is a good book for you. ... Read more

Product Description

In this completely revised and updated ACLU handbook, Levy and Rubenstein use a simple question-and-answer format to clearly and concisely explain the rights of people with mental disabilities.

People with mental disabilities, whether with mental illness or mental retardation, have endured a long history of degradation, stigma, fear, and even hatred. In the 1920s, they were considered a "blight on mankind." Government publications described people with mental retardation, for example, as a "parasitic, predatory class" and a "danger to the race." Writing for the Supreme Court about whether society had the right to sterilize a woman based on the allegation that she was mentally retarded, Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes described people with mental retardation as a "menace" who "sap the strength of the state…It is better for all the world if, instead of waiting to execute degenerate offspring for crime, or let them starve for their imbecility, society can prevent those who are manifestly unfit from continuing their kind." Holmes concluded, "Three generations of imbeciles are enough."

Massive changes in attitude and in legislation have occurred since that infamous Holmes dictum. The struggle has been arduous—and certainly is not over—but progress has been made. The movement to establish and protect the rights of people with mental disabilities has entailed an effort to gain fair and equal treatment and to foster the respect and dignity every human being deserves.

Levy and Rubenstein here address the recent development of a self-advocacy movement among mentally disabled persons and the corresponding new concepts in the design and provision of services for them.

Product Description
This book contains the most widely used definition of mental retardation in the U.S. and is based on 10 years of use and research by a panel of 11 international experts.

What is mental retardation? How is it diagnosed? Can IQ scores alone determine if a person has mental retardation? What is the cut-off IQ score when deciding whether a person has mental retardation? Since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled to ban execution of persons with mental retardation on June 22, 2002, states and courts grapple with these tough questions and more.

The 10th edition lays out a complete system of diagnosing mental retardation, easily understood by practitioners, public officials, and even families. Further, the book also provides an in-depth analysis on how supports can help better the lives of persons with mental retardation.

Mental Retardation also comes with a workbook containing key terms, examples, a case study, and ready-to-use forms that make it easier for practitioners to understand and implement the definition.

Product Description
The grief language of persons with mental retardation discloses intellectual capacities that are no less powerful, complex, subtle, disturbing, deep, and spiritual than those revealed in the more discursive and dialectical grief language of persons without mental retardation. This book will assist readers in recognizing and understanding the behavioral language of grief among persons with mental retardation and in developing intervention plans to support them through their grief, in both the short and long term. The book contributes to an awareness of the significance of loss in the life experience of persons with mental retardation. Experiencing loss may be a very powerful vulnerability in their mental or psychological life, and dealing with this loss is a basic element in psychological health. There has been an enormous hole in the death and dying literature and in the mental retardation literature on the mourning behavior and needs of persons with mental retardation. This book fills that hole, and lays a foundation for grief support services, establishes standards of practice and care, and is an educational primer about the loss and mourning needs of persons with mental retardation. The book is directed to grief counselors and therapists, other mental health workers who work with persons with mental retardation, agencies that support persons with mental retardation, and advocates and family of persons with mental retardation. It includes carefully detailed guidelines for support, therapeutic intervention, family issues regarding a dying caregiver, and agency interventions and program development.INTENDED AUDIENCEGrief counselors and therapists; professionals, families, and advocates in the field of mental retardation; among professionals: mental retardation service provider agencies and staff, mental health professional who provide services to persons with mental retardation, grief counselors and therapists, and academics interested in the mourning issues of persons with mental retardation. ... Product Description
According to Edward Shorter, just forty years ago the institutions housing people with mental retardation (MR) had become a national scandal. The mentally retarded who lived at home were largely isolated and a source of family shame. Although some social stigma still attaches to the people with developmental disabilities (a range of conditions including what until recently was called mental retardation), they now actively participate in our society and are entitled by law to educational, social, and medical services. The immense improvement in their daily lives and life chances came about in no small part because affected families mobilized for change but also because the Kennedy family made mental retardation its single great cause. Long a generous benefactor of MR-related organizations, Joseph P. Kennedy made MR the special charitable interest of the family foundation he set up in the 1950s.Although he gave all of his children official roles, he involved his daughter Eunice in performing its actual work identifying appropriate recipients of awards and organizing the foundation's activities. With unique access to family and foundation papers, Shorter brings to light the Kennedy family's strong commitment to public service, showing that Rose and Joe taught their children by precept and example that their wealth and status obligated them to perform good works. Their parents expected each of them to apply their considerable energies to making a difference. Eunice Kennedy Shriver took up that charge and focused her organizational and rhetorical talents on putting MR on the federal policy agenda. As a sister of the President of the United States, she had access to the most powerful people in the country and drew their attention to the desperate situation of families affected by mental retardation. Her efforts made an enormous difference, resulting in unprecedented public attention to MR and new approaches to coordinating medical and social services. Along with her husband, R. Sargent Shriver, she made the Special Olympics a international, annual event in order to encourage people with mental retardation to develop their skills and discover the joy of achievement. She emerges from these pages as a remarkable and dedicated advocate for people with developmental disabilities.Shorter's account of mental retardation presents an unfamiliar view of the Kennedy family and adds a significant chapter to the history of disability in this country.Edward Shorter is a Professor at the University of Toronto where he holds the Hannah Chair in the History of Medicine. 1-0 out of 5 stars Enlightened?
What Joe Kennedy did was to take a reportedly shy and mildly retarded woman (or so they claimed) and obliterate her humanity with a lobotomy. The reason is reported to be that she was considered an embarassment and a potential roadblock to Kennedy political ambitions.

It was a "failed" lobotomy, the reports frequently say. What would constitute a successful lobotomy? The Kennedys have spent the subsequent decades promoting psychiatric tortures and coercive mistreatments of millions of other Americans who have ended up in the clutches of the "mental health community." In short, their "philanthropy" is one of support for violence and torture. For this they are feted as humanitarians by apologists such as this author.

4-0 out of 5 stars How the Kennedy's personal issue became a political movement
This book examines why and how the Kennedys became involved with Mental Retardation and eventually all disability right issues. Because myself and many other Americans have benefited from the civil rights laws of the last thirty years, it is eye opening to remember a world had once existed without those laws.

People with disabilties were so scorned by society that 'erasing' their presence or locking them up at home was previously considered the most loving option. Partially from their own history with Rosemary, the Kennedys felt obligated to use their reputation and change these public moores.

This same book also notes how the independent living movement eventually surpassed Eunice Kennedy Shriver's Special Olympic work as the most visible manifestation of people with disabilties. Although their visiblity was made possible through the family's previous community organizing, people with disabilities themselves subsequently sought a greater role in a movement dedicated to their rights.

However enlightened for the time, Special Olympics are today considered by some people to instead reinforce 'poster child' sterotypes of people with disabilities. Reccent Special Olympic materials are mindful of the shift, now stressing participant empowerment and dignity. Mental retardation references were revised with the term 'intellectual disabilities'.

This is not a particularly involved read, but it is interesting for people interested in the Kennedy family and/or disability rights. Because it is supposed to focus on the family's contributions to this policy area, the scope is much smaller than other disability history books. At the same time, this book does not pretend this family had all the answers with disability rights issues, and acknowlleged they were as influenced by other activists as the activists were influenced by them. ...
