1-0 out of 5 stars Don't let a cancer patient read this one!!!
This book is dated in its information.Since this book was published there have been approved chemotherapy agents (Alimta) and the prognosis has gotten alot better.I am very sorry that I let my dad read this book.It took days to get over the depression.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to understand answers to difficult questions
When my husband was diagnosed with Mesothelioma the world crashed in around us.Doctors unfamiliar with the latest advances condemmed him to death within months
This was not acceptable, and we needed real answers to our questions and FAST!
Harvey Pass has done an excellent job of de-mystifying the illness and his well written guide pointed us in the right direction to get the best help available.
Thanks Harvey for a lifesaving (and encouraging) manual

5-0 out of 5 stars Cancer Sucks! (but some good information is a god send)
If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with Mesothelioma, PLEASE get this book. With all the confusing, and contradictory information out there, it's nice to have a good reference. Its plain English, it's hopeful but real, it's compassionate.Written by a Dr., Nurse, and a Patients Spouse, it gives real information in a way that there is no question what is meant. It's allot of the questions that you would ask, if you could.

I hope that no one has to buy this book, because it means that there is a long hard journey ahead.God Bless

5-0 out of 5 stars The only patient/family friendly book on mesothelioma
100 Questions & Answers About Mesothelioma is the only patient/family friendly book on mesothelioma on the market.Using the Q & A format, it explores a wide range of issues faced by the patient and his/her family, and does so in a clear, direct manner.

Harvey I. Pass, MD, one of the authors, writers this in the Preface:

"It is written to try to guide; it is not written as a thesis. It is a distillation of "important things," as opposed to a collection of useless medical facts. It is meant to be personal for those who use it, and hopefully to cool that "rage-fear" reaction that you, the reader, are probably undergoing since you, or somebody you know, has been diagnosed with the disease. We want you to be better prepared to start on this unknown path..."

I wish I had had this book two years ago when my father was diagnosed with mesothelioma. The calm voice of the book would have done a good deal in helping my family overcome theshock and sadness.

Product Description
Malignant mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer in which the cancer cells are found in the sac lining the chest (pleura) or abdomen (peritoneum). This lethal disease is associated with asbestos and has vast economic and legal implications. As the disease takes approximately twenty years to manifest itself in humans, a wave of diagnoses are expected in the near future. In the United States alone, an estimated 3,500 - 4,000 patients are diagnosed with mesothelioma annually, and it is estimated that over the next 35 years, more than 250,000 people in Western Europe will be diagnosed with the disease. Malignant Mesothelioma, edited by internationally recognized experts in the field, is a comprehensive text that relates science, pathology, clinical aspects and therapy for mesothelioma under one cover. The book integrates the newest research and advances in its discussions of the disease, covering such topics as carcinogenesis, epidemiology, benchwork, endoscopy, multimodality approaches and treatment. It includes discussions on novel approaches to mesothelioma, such as gene therapy, vaccination strategies and immunotherapy, as well as discussions on the legal and economic aspects of the disease. Over 200 illustrations round out the text. An invaluable reference for the medical oncologist, thoracic surgeon, radiation oncologist, pulmonologist, and benchworker interested in the disease. ... Product Description

Mesothelioma is a global problem, its incidence is rising in Europe, and it is a major health problem in the USA and other parts of the world, largely related to the previous use of asbestos products. Diagnosis, which rests on the pathology, is very difficult because of its diverse appearances and the potential for other diseases to mimic it.

This monograph has been assembled by an international group of experts with a wealth of experience from France, UK, USA, Australia and Canada to aid in pathological diagnosis. In all these countries, the disease poses significant health problems. This book deals with clinical, radiological, epidemiological, molecular, and histopathological aspects of the disease. Tumors of the pleural, pericardial, peritoneal cavities as well as the ovary and tunica vaginalis are considered. Differential diagnoses of serosal-based lesions are fully discussed and the use of immunohistochemical stains is explained. Plentiful illustrations give further aid to diagnosis

An essential read for all diagnostic pathologists as well as general pathologists, who are sometimes required to diagnose the disease at biopsy or post mortem. The book will be also invaluable to members of the medical and legal professions who are involved with various aspects of this disease.

Product Description
Malignant pleural mesothelioma, a malignancy due largely to asbestos exposure, represents an increasingly common challenge to clinical and medical oncologists, respiratory physicians, and cardiothoracic surgeons, as well as researchers in the field. The disease has yet to reach its peak and is expected to kill over 100,000 people worldwide. As malignant pleural mesothelioma gains in profile, Kenneth O'Byrne and Valerie Rusch present a comprehensive overview of the subject, aimed at all health care professionals who come into contact with patients with the disease. The book includes chapters on epidemiology, diagnosis, histopathology, radiology, surgery, chemotherapy, immune therapy, radiotherapy, and palliative medicine, written by an international team of contributors. A molecular biology section focuses on the carcinogenic effects of asbestos fibres and simian virus 40, angiogenesis and angiogenic growth factors, the immune response, and genetic abnormalities detected in the disease. Future therapies are also covered, as is a perspective on the distinct legal issues related to the disease. This highly-illustrated, full colour book provides the ultimate, timely resource on this devastating disease. ... Product Description
In October 2001, James O'Connor was diagnosed with mesothelioma, the asbestos caused cancer. His prognosis was less than a year to live. Surgery was not possible because of the position of the tumor and chemotherapy would decrease his quality of life and not significantly improve his length of life. His oncologist suggested that he take his wife on a cruise and start hospice care upon his return. James rejected the idea. Instead he was determined to survive this cancer. Working with other professional clinicians, he formulated a regimen of over 100 supplements a day, changed his diet, practiced mind-body medicine, and relied on his own discipline to see him through the difficult times ahead. More than six years later, James is alive and active. He enjoys his life and continues his holistic regimen every day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lung Cancer and Mesothelioma
"Lung Cancer & Mesothelioma"

A Book Review By Lorraine Kember

The very mention of the word Cancer, strikes fear into all of us. It seems that every day we learn of someone close to us being diagnosed and all too often their cancer is terminal. There is nothing that can prepare us for a terminal diagnosis and the grief we experience at these times is intensified by our fear of the unknown, and our lack of knowledge regarding the disease and the pain and symptoms associated with it.

From personal experience I know that knowledge is the key to providing a better "quality of life" for the cancer patient.Better understanding of the stages of the disease and of methods and medications available to treat the pain and symptoms caused by it, allow for the patient and those who care for them, to make informed decisions regarding their care.In this way, they are able to regain some control over their lives.

Rarely does one find all the information they need in one book, however I believe Howard's well researched and comprehensive book "Lung Cancer & Mesothelioma", is quite unique. It provides a wealth of relevant and useful information including; how various types of cancer are formed, medical trials, available treatments and medications, insight and discussion regarding the emotional burden of cancer upon the patient and their families and ways by which to manage grief.

I believe this book will provide an invaluable resource for anyone who has or who is caring for someone with cancer.

Lorraine Kember is the Author of "Lean on Me - Cancer through a Carer's Eyes",
Written from her experience of caring for her terminally ill husband, who passed away from pleural mesothelioma (asbestos related cancer in 2001)

This multiauthored book describes the maglinant tumour, mesothelioma, and the latest advances in the field. Its purpose is to offer a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of epidemiology, molecular biology, pathology, animal model, diagnosis and therapy of human mesothelioma. Product Description
Mesotheliomas of Animals is the first book to provide a comprehensive compilation of the diverse and often disparate literature regarding animal mesotheliomas. The compendium presents evidence to support the existence of "background" and "threshold," both of which are concepts central to the controversy surrounding nonasbestos-related mesotheliomas. Examples of "background" tumors (those which are nonasbestos-related) are described in detail, and indications of "threshold" for the induction of mesotheliomas following exposure to asbestiform and nonasbestiform agents are evident from the "positive dose-response" studies that are discussed. This compendium also allows for easy comparison of tumor yields elicited in "inoculation" studies performed with the same fiber types at similar doses. These comparisons often demonstrate markedly different tumor yields and highlight the limitations of injection techniques for fiber safety assessment. Mesotheliomas of Animals will be an essential reference for industrial hygienists, environmental lawyers, cancer researchers, and pulmonary scientists. It will be particularly useful to anyone involved with the design of fiber safety tests or with developing experimental models and protocols to assess the manner in which mesotheliomagenesis occurs. ... Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Mesotheliomas," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Mesotheliomas in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Mesotheliomas when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Mesotheliomas, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more
