5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!Must Read for Migraine Patients!
This is a great book for any type of Migraine patient! It explains every type of Migraine, ways to manage stress, triggers, etc.I have suffered from severe Migraines since Nov. 2008.I have been on many different many medications and had many hospitalizations.I am also in the healthcare field. This book helped me realize alot about my migraines.Charts are included in the book to help track your migraines as they affect your daily life, as well as depression scales. The book points out important key factors such as excercise and stress reduction.Food triggers and key things that happen before migraines are also listed. This book includes so much material, I couldn't put it down.Any patient suffering from Migraines should read this book, even if you think you have read and heard it all.The doctors and psychologist who wrote this book all suffer from Migraines so they understand the migraine process as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn from the best
You probably know, Migraines are a CHRONIC condition. You didn't just catch migraine for a week (like a strep throat). This is why this title and its physician companion book is so important in that it puts the focus on what you can do to "Manage" your migraine--so that it doesn't control you. When you have any chronic condition it is important that you do things on a daily basis to care for your condition.Medical studies also show that the more a patient learns about their condition the better they do.So simply put Knowledge is power-What you Know, You can Master!!!

It is best to think of Migraine as a sensitive nervous system that doesn't manage change well. The best treatments are directed at strengthening the underlying irritable nervous system so that it becomes stable, produces fewer episodes of disabling pain, and moves towards healing.

For the first time leading headache doctors have collaborated in producing a title on Migraine headaches in two volumes; one for the doctor and one for the patient.Drs Cady, Farmer, Lipton, and Bigal have proposed a system for migraine (based on frequency of attacks and their impact on daily life and outlook) that stages the patients and maps out a course for healing. This allows for targeted interventions based on the patient's current stage.

I would recommend using this book in combination with 10 Simple Solutions to Migraines by Dawn Marcus, MD. 10 Simple Solutions will help you learn about your headaches and "Managing Migraines" will teach you how to apply that knowledge.

All physicians need to learn to diagnose and manage head pain. However, there are many causes of headache: some are secondary to other conditions; others are disorders in themselves. These factors often make differential diagnosis and treatment a challenge. This didactic atlas approaches the problem of migraine and other headaches from a visual perspective. The contents cover the history of migraine and headache, their epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment. While the central emphasis is on migraine, all types of headache are addressed. The book includes some classic illustrations from historical texts as well as modern images that illustrate the disorders and current thinking. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Average
The actual subject about nutrition for your mind is a fascinating one and something that people should be made aware of. The way how this was put in Larry McCleary book was fairly average. I found his real mission was to sell his own range of very overpriced vitamin products. When you have someone selling you their products and talking about medical research then you have a major conflict of interest. About a third of the book is taken up by mind exercise games which are nothing more than very basic adding and subtracting formulas which there are mistakes in.
I found Your Miracle Brain by Jean Carper a much better read. Like all this research you need to keep an open mind on it

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative!
This book, written by a brain-surgeon, gives you up to date information about how our brain processes memories and how we can use nutrition and supplements to improve our minds and to relieve such maladies as hot flashes and migraines. The explanations as to why women suffer from migraines and hot-flashes was eye-opening.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST for migraine sufferers!
I have been reading every newly published book that offers any hint of migraine advice. I have stubborn migraines that have stumped my neurologist ad gynecologist. I finally have some control and have reduced my migraines using herbal supplements. This book recommends Taurine and a bunch of other things you can easily get at a vitamin shop. Give it a try if you've tried everything else. I was on Topamax, Gabapentin, and many different birth control pills. I now use magnesium, butterbur (Migra-Eeze) and taurine with co-enzyme Q10 for 3 weeks headache free - then PMS rears its ugly head. My migraine frequency has been reduced as well as the level of pain I experience when I do have a migraine. This book is easy to read and packed full of suggestions! You will not be disappointed. It's a part of my permanent book collection and I refer to it frequently.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Brain Trust Program
It was a little difficult at first to get past the clinical wording, but his book is exremely helpful. I read it myself and have recomended it to friends with brain injuries and memory issues. If you can read it, it can give you great insight into your body.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Authoritative
I couldn't help but notice that Dr. McCleary's photo on the back flap of the book shows that he is a bit overweight. This is natural considering his apparent love for beacon and eggs for breakfast, and his love for red meats, butter, and cheese. In my opinion, this is the only questionable part of his book.I just cannot believe that a diet abundant in saturated fats and cholesterols is not harmful to the cardiovascular system. And what is harmful for the cardiovascular system is also harmful for the brain. Furthermore, any amount of overweight puts a strain on all internal organs - for both man and beast.

Most readers may think I am some kind of fanatic.Well, maybe I am.But I believe that a calorie restricted, nutrient rich diet, leads to better health for the brain and all the other organs of the body.I also believe that calorie restriction is easy when the food served is simple and not made artificially enticing.

Maybe Dr McCleary believes that most people simply will not be willing to eliminate these expensive and enticing kinds of foods. I do admit that almost everyone probably feels this way, and would greatly benefit just by doing exactly as he has written. For this reason I must bow to his judgment.

I definitely agree with Dr. McCleary's recommendations for dietary supplements and mental exercises. What I'm really saying is that I plan to do as he says except that my diet is a bit more restrictive - simply steamed vegetables, whole grains, skim milk, more fish, less whole eggs, a little skinless chicken, and almost no red meat. And no candy.Candy kills more people than cigarettes.

I'm a 70 year old 5'10" male weighing in at 150lbs.My goals are to reduce my weight to what it was at age 25(140lbs.), and to improve my cognitive functions as much as possible. This book is sure to help.I highly recommend it to others. ... Read more

With the first presidential debate to be held on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota just a few weeks away, the focus of the nation is upon a young senator from California of Chinese descent who has begun to inexplicably surge in the polls in his bid to overtake the relatively popular incumbent president.
So what does a meeting of a group of six engineers and three neurologists in the conference room at the university's Department of Neurology have to do with that debate? If there is a connection between the completion of a fascinating research project funded by an Iranian and conducted at the university and Minntronic, a local biomedical manufacturing company, what could it be?
When contacts and associates of Dr. Jack Stevens, a neurologist and electrical/computer engineer, begin to turn up dead, might he be the one man in America who can uncover the truth of what is going on? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Political Thriller
A taut political thriller driven by both recent and shockingly-plausible advances in medicine. The novel introduces Dr. Jack Stevens, a compelling protagonist readers will come to admire; I look forward to following the Doctor - and his potential love interest - in future novels...should he survive!

Presidential Migraines offers a riveting tale of suspense, murder, and deception. The novel is written in a rewarding, quick-hitting style (like The DaVinci Code) that had me blazing through the book in only a couple sittings. If you're interested in stories set in modern day with twists that will have you sharing the story with your friends, I recommend this book.

Product Description

Headache is often due to build-up of stress and tension. Acupressure is an effective way to relieve painful sensation associated these conditions. This guide by Aaron Stein, PhD, is based on over 5,000 years of Chinese practice of self-acupressure.

Features

- Step-by-step guide to relieving headaches and migraines at 5 locations:
- In the frontal region of the head (frontal headache).
- In the back of the head (occipital headache).
- On the side of the head (temporal headache).
- On the top of the head (vertex headache).
- Pain in the eye (headache behind the eye).
- Every step explains point location, direction of force, and duration of massage.
- No previous experience necessary
- Total treatment duration 10 to 15 minutes.

How acupressure works

Nobody knows how acupressure works. Very often pain is caused by a self-perpetuating mechanism: pain causes the mind to be attentive to pain, that, in turn causes more pain and even more attention, and so on.
Most likely acupressure works by interrupting this vicious circle. How does acupressure interrupt the cycle? Stimulation of active points is thought to lead to increased release of endorphins. Endorphin is a natural body painkiller. Endorphin and morphine are chemically different molecules but, by coincidence, they have very similar 3-dimensional shape. This similarity in shape allows morphine to bind the endorphin receptor and reduce pain.
Thus endorphin released by acupressure stimulation may lead to temporal reduction of mind's attention to pain, interruption of pain cycle, and following complete cessation of pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This book was very helpful.Although many of the recipes contained trigger foods, it was very clear to the reader to watch for or substitute for these foods if they were a problem.I would recommend this book to anyone who suffers from migraines.

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of good info
Lots of good info if you are trying to sort out migraine triggers. With the help of this book and others I am almost migraine free.

1-0 out of 5 stars Authors Should FollowTheir Own Rules
This book was a disapointment!I have suffered with migraine headaches for years. And I usually make two different dinners each meal--one for my family and one for me.I was hoping to find some recipes I could make that everyone would be able to eat. This book starts out identifying foods that possibly "trigger" headaches, ie., citrus, broadbeans, raw onions, caffeine, etc.You are then informed to avoid these foods. Then the authors print out recipes THAT HAVE THESE SAME FOODS AS MAIN INGREDIENTS!
What a waste of my money this book was.I am disgusted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Foods don't cause migraine
This book perpetuates and exploits the myth that foods cause or trigger migraines. No food has ever been demonstrated to cause, promote, precipitate ("trigger") or aggravate migraine. Beyond a placebo effect, dietary restriction is ineffective as a treatment for headache. (The exceptions are foods containing caffeine or alcohol, both of which are more properly regarded as drugs.) Migraine patients should eat a healthy, varied diet, and not deprive themselves of freedom, enjoyment and nutrition because of an outdated and mistaken belief.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I bought this book thinking I would be getting more of a variety of meals to help prevent migraines and better planning of meals. What I found in my opinion was a lot of receipies with questionable migraine-triggering ingredients. There were VERY few recipes using just the "foods allowed" section.I found about 10 without any yeast, vinegar or other questionable items such as canned or jar ingredients. When you are at the elimination diet stage after being first diagnosed with migraines, this is the diet you need most.At my next Dr. appointment, I plan on bringing in the book to get his opinion.I did find the food purchasing guide helpful. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars I don't think so.
Some of this book is ok. If they would just stick to nutrition it might be ok. They wrote that exercise triggers migraines. Exercise opens the blood vessels and helps aid blood flow. My wife started getting on the treadmill in the mornings, and it's greatly reduced her migraines and improved our love life. Many parts of this book are crap. Oh, and it says sex triggers migraines. It actually relieves it. (again, that exercise factor)
We read half of it and pitched it in the trash.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good advice!
I got this book because I had been to a neurologist for over a year yet still had 15 days of migraines a month. When I eliminated the food items listed as possible triggers, then added them back slowly as the author suggests, I found my triggers and was able to get down to just 2 or three days of migraines a month.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Elaine, this really helped!
This book offers a ton of practical information for people who suffer from the 6 common types of headaches. My whole family shared the book. I suffer from hormonal headaches and found that information very helpful while another family member has migraines and is currently filling out her headache diary included in the book) so she can better understand what her triggers are. I loved that there were lots of lists and tips as well as reader-friendly answers to complicated medical questions. I've tried a handful of the recipes so far and they offered tasty and easy to make alternatives to favorite foods that have been identified as potential headache triggers. The reason there are different lists of foods for the different headaches is because each type of headache has different foods to choose and foods to lose. I recommend this book highly! It really helped two people in my family.

1-0 out of 5 stars still hungry
This was a disappointing book to me.I was excited to think I had found a book that would help me build a diet of items that were 'safe' to eat. This book, however, gave the typical lists of what not to eat.It is also pretty confusing because one page will list good foods to eat, for example, that are high in magnesium but includes standard trigger foods such as chocolate and nuts that are noted on other pages as being possible problems. It is like the author just copied the list from somewhere and didn't even bother to note which items are thought to be triggers for migraines. The book also has, in my opinion, a too light-hearted feel to it.I was hoping for some solid advice on what to eat in a no-nonsense tone...but didn't find here unfortunately.Maybe I would like the book better if I tried a few of the 21 recipes.I was just hoping for more than a "Peachy Cake" (one of the 21 recipes) book. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars deceiving
This book is deceiving as it has many trigger foods in a lot of the recipes. The author is suppose to be an expert on migraines, if I am not mistaken, so I was surprised. There are a lot of recipes that include mushrooms, which have a naturally occurring form of msg, but these recipes are marked to not have msg. Glad I bought it used and did not spend much money on it, as I don't think I will be using it much, if at all. The recipes that are free of my triggers are rather complex. People with migraines, especially people with chronic migraines like me, need more simple recipes, at least in my opinion. My advice is to save your money! Figure out your triggers, then just surf the net for different recipes. The Food Network has a lot of goo ones!

5-0 out of 5 stars true gourmet food for migraneurs
Easy to follow and elegant recipes that taste good. They do use a bit of garlic, which is a huge trigger for me, but all triggers are listed to the side of the recipe.

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay if you really like to cook
There are several recipes but you really have to motivated to cook, grocery shop etc.I want things more simple.I would save my money.

1-0 out of 5 stars Almost every single recipe contains at least one trigger!
I am following the 1-2-3 Migraine Prevention diet (book "Heal your Headache, Buchholz). My entire lifestyle has changed since I have been on this diet (but have cut my migraines almost 80%!)and it has been extremely challenging to cut out all the migraine dietary triggers, so when I found this Migraine Cookbook, I thought it was going to make things a lot easier. However, I don't think I can eat a single recipe in this book! The author even points many (not all) dietary triggers and still continues to use these ingredients in most/nearly all of her recipes.I am quite disappointed and do NOT recommend this book to others trying on this diet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with content
Although the recipes in the book look delicious, so many of them have ingredients that are migraine triggers. If you are trying to restrict all suspected triggers as I am, then you don't want to make things with ANY possible triggers in them. There were some good recipes, but there were a lot that I wouldn't use because they had some items considered triggers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars There is help for children
I literally just completed an inpatient treatment program provided by the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago. They were very helpful in reducing the severity of my 21+ year daily chronic headache/migraine. This clinic was founded by Dr. Seymour Diamond. My son also suffers from bad migraines. Most neurologists have been hesitant to treat him because if his age. The Diamond Headache Clinic work with children without hesitation. The doctors here and this book have a wealth of information. I am anxious to apply some of the things I learned there, such as biofeedback and low tyramine diet, with my son.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Technical Book
Dr, Diamond has put together a book full good information relating to childhood headaches. It seems the book is targeted at other Doctors as much as it is for parents.Overall this book was helpful in learning about my daughters migrains but the diary section at the end was a little hard to use.Through my research to help my daughters I found a book that works great and is simple for parent and child to use. The title is "The Headache Detective" by John Ricker. It's a headache workbook designed for children that is easy to follow. It is prabably a little more helpful pinpointing what is causing your child's headache than Dr Diamond's book. Both books were helpfull

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what the doctor ordered
Headache and Your Child is "just what the doctor ordered."My child would double over in pain for no apparent reason. The doctors couldn't pinpoint any cause for the episodes. We had been searching for answers for over a year when we came back to the idea of possible migraines. In searching for information on abdominal migraines I kept coming across the name, Dr. Seymour Diamond. This book has helped us understand migraines and their causes as well as inform us about current treatment options that are available, everything from medication to biofeedback.Through the use of case studies, Dr. Diamond discusses up-to-date diagnostic tools and treatments. He reassures parents that while there are sometimes very serious underlying conditions, not every headache is an indicator of a brain tumor.

I highly recommend this as a "must have" book for the parent of any child that suffers from headaches, not just migraines. It can help in identifying the type of headache your child experiences and offer suggestions of appropriate treatments. If your child has already been diagnosed with migraines, it is still a wonderful reference book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
OK, first an introduction:I have been following Dr. Buchholz's advice for three years or so, and Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain changed my life.I've gone from having 15 headache days a month to about three, and my headaches aren't devastating like they used to be.Like Gunderson and other migraine-sufferers, I've had to do some fancy footwork avoiding headache triggers at restaurants and in recipes.I do very much appreciate the intentions that went with the creation of this cookbook.

So it was with high hopes that I ordered Migraine-Free Cooking!.(Especially based on the other reviews.) But the exclamation point in the title should have warned me:this is not the book I was hoping for. It's often elementary:a recipe for boiling eggs????Many recipes offered, like for Sugar Cookies or Garlic Broccoli and Cauliflower, would never have had triggers in them in the first place:I was expecting the cookbook to show recipes that often have triggers but show how to replace those triggers with an acceptable substitute.(For example, offer us a pancake batter without buttermilk.)

What I was really wanting when I ordered the book was help replacing triggers, like lemon, that commonly show up in recipes. The subtitle, which does give some helpful information, was not obvious on the webpage (or at least I missed it):"A Tyramine, Caffeine, MSG, Nitrate, Nitrite, Sulfite, and Chocolate-Free Cookbook for Migraine Sufferers."Once I saw it, I still expected recipes to show or suggest ingredient substitutions for those cooking traditional dishes (What do you do if a recipe calls for chocolate, for example? Anyone with common sense would know to make Sugar Cookies instead of Chocolate Chip Cookies if trying to avoid chocolate, so I expectedmore sophisticated solutions from a $20 book.)

I would not buy this again or recommend it unless one is just learning to cook.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK if you want to keep migraines away!
This cookbook is amazing. The recipes are delicious and its a great compliment to the book "1-2-3 Heal Your Headaches."I hope the author writes a follow-up cookbook. These recipes have helped me stick with the diet and keep my pain away. THANK YOU!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome recipes!
Some valuable information at the beginning of the book, but the recipes are definitely the best part. It's awesome to be able to eat and not have to worry about getting a migraine!

BTW: Absitively loved the Rosemary Pork recipe and have used it often. Was my first taste of shallots, and oh my god are they yummy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Buchholz's 1-2-3 Migraine program
This is the only cookbook I've found for people following David Buchholz's Heal Your Headache The 1-2-3 program.Every other migraine cookbook I've seen includes "trigger foods."I've liked the recipes in this cookbook that I've tried so far, and there are also good suggestions about between-meal snacks. I think this is a very good resource for people who are trying to control headaches and/or migraines through avoiding dietary triggers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect!
Great buy for those trying to following a migraine prevention diet!
I just bought this cookbook after reading Buchholz' book "Heal Your Headache: The 1-2-3 Program for Taking Charge of Your Pain".This book is based on the 1-2-3 Program and has significantly helped me with the new diet I've undertaken to eliminate food triggers and (hopefully) my migraines.I've suffered for 15 years and need relief! After realizing I needed to be on a strict diet for at least four months to 'prove' that many foods could actually be triggering my heachaches, I panicked because all of the recipes I'm used to cooking contained something I could not eat!Even the simplest entrees and sides had onions or a store bought package (containing MSG).This book has many simple recipes that eliminate all the food triggers mentioned in the 1-2-3 Program by Buchholz.Nothing fancy or overly hard to cook and I like that. The author has a great website and blog as well, both have been very helpful.I am only 3 weeks into my program, so I can't really make any profound statements on if it's helping with headaches or not, but I'm hopeful and this book is full of tasty recipes and even some new ideas for me.I didn't think I could live without chocolate, but there are some great desserts I've tried without it! ... In a new chapter, illustrated with startling colour paintings by migraine patients, Dr Sacks discusses similiarities among the visual hallucinations, or auras, that often precede a migraine and those that are induced by hallucinogenic drugs or deliria. 5-0 out of 5 stars I love the book. I will recommend.
Right after I got the book I immediately opened it and started reading. I couldn't put in down. It helped me to understand my migraines a lot better. I would recommend this to any man or woman that lives with this disease ever day as so many of us do.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not The Best Approach
Getting off drugs should be a migraine sufferers goal, not taking more drugs. "Heal Your Headache" by David Buchholz worked for me after 18 years of being pumped full of every drug known to man. Sure, the first few weeks of no drugs and following the diet plan were difficult, but living a pain free life is a small price to pay! His book is worth its weight in gold. Be VERY WARY of any doctor who wants to continually "try this drug" over and over and over. I have followed Dr. Buchholz' plan for 7 years with amazing success.

5-0 out of 5 stars An oldie but good one!
Thoughtful, well researched writing useful to those first diagnosed, as well as those referring to it at a later date- during treatment. This volume provides some hope for those failing to respond to one therapy or another that something WILL work in the long run, be it pharmacotherapy, or via alternative medicine. A true bible of information, coping methods, and best of all, a true sense that you are not alone in your pain. Two thumbs up.

1-0 out of 5 stars Better Books out there
If you have been dealing with migraines/headaches for some time, this book offers nothing new. Also, if you don't want to get trapped on the strong drug regimen you'll learn no alternative methods here.Obviously, Dr. Peterson is in the camp of pushing drugs by large pharmacutical corporations.
Keep reading, there are better books for learning how to deal with migraines.Try "The Miracle of Magnesium" by Carolyn Dean,
or check out Dr. John Lee's website. There are many other type treatments you can try that aren't promoted in this book.Be wary of the HRT types in this book too....look for natural alternatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Fabulous!!!
I visited the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN to try and find relief for my migraines. My doctor, Dr. Swanson, told me I should read this book.I was a little ticked off because i had throughly researched the subject and frankly thought I knew it all when it comes to my headaches.Imagine my suprise when I started actually reading the book, a month later, and discovered that not only does certain foods trigger but so does the weather. Yes that's right a low pressure front can trigger migraines.I also found out helpful tips to dealing with jackass emergency room doctors who think you are just there to get a "fix". It also should me preventative medications that might work if my current medication does not. This book is a easy read and very informative even to those of us who know it all!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good overview of causes, types and treatment options
Written in everyday, non-judgemental language, the guide distinguishes between different types of headaches and migraines, and proceeds to offer treatments currently available. It's very respectful of the debilitating nature of this condition and really encourages the migraineur to take charge of his/her treatment and research as much as possible.I appreciated that they gave neutral comparisons of acute and preventive drugs, and covered a variety of non-drug approaches.Chiropractic was not recommended by them, although it has turned out to be a valid treatment for me, as well as attention to thyroid. There is also a supplemental reading list, as well as lots of positive support and encouragement to continue searching for what's right for you, which I found empowering. Also, a section for the family members to read who are affected by the migraineur's condition, and other specialized sections.A great reference to bring to your physician, and a good book for your family and friends to read if they want to understand more about your affliction. ...
