Product Description
According to Geoffrey Redmond, M.D., a majority of the 42 million American women between the ages of thirty-five and fifty-five suffer from vulnerability to their own hormones. Appearance, emotions -- and even sex drive -- may be affected. Symptoms include thinning hair, persistent acne, mood swings, low energy, loss of pleasure in sex, weight gain, irregular periods, and pain. While the media has emphasized the problems of menopause, Dr. Redmond explains that all too many women experience hormonal miseries even in their thirties. Lab tests are often normal because the problem is not the hormones themselves but how a woman's body reacts to them. Healthy, active women suddenly find that once quiescent hormones have taken over control of their lives. Because their problems are often dismissed as trivial, women who are hormonally vulnerable are frequently thwarted in their quest for help. Too often they are brushed off with remarks such as, "Your tests are normal; there's nothing wrong with you." This is tragic because, as Dr. Redmond demonstrates, hormonal balance can nearly always be restored with the treatments he details, which include individualized use of prescription medications, herbal supplements, lifestyle changes, and even spiritual practices. Many women have heard that testosterone can help sex drive, but most have not been warned about the damage that careless testosterone therapy can cause on skin and hair.

In this book, Dr. Redmond, an internationally recognized authority on testosterone in women, explains the only safe ways to use testosterone. With informative sidebars, quizzes, and personal stories of women who have overcome hormone vulnerability, this helpful book will empower you to find treatments for your hormone problems that are tailored to fit your own body, biochemistry, symptoms, and lifestyle. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars So impressed, I am a patient of the doctor now.
This man knows what he is talking about.I suffered with cystic acne and other miserable things from the age of 15 until February 2009 (age 31) when I became a patient of the author. The acne is gone, my hair is under control and I look better than ever, which makes me feel better than ever.

If you struggle with hormonal issues, find that your doctor can't help...get this book. You don't have to see Dr. Redmond to be able to take advantage of the knowledge in the book. You just need a good doctor willing to work with you and follow the recommendations within. That may be hard to find...I went to the source for my issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read it!!
I am so happy that I purchased this book!I recommend it to all women that want to know what is going on with their bodies as they age and approach changes.Living with discomfort because you are aging does NOT have to be.This book helps you identify problems and ways to solve them with your own physician. It actually helps you improve your quality of life because the information gives you a plan.It gives medical evidence as well as real life examples of women Dr. Redmond has treated. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, some hope and answers !!!!!!!!
I am 37 and am loosing my hair, The information in this book has made me aware of all the reasons women can loose their hair. Many of the reason have the same symptoms. Which at first is frustrating until you realize more reasons means more possibilities to get it back even if onlypart of the hair. If you are considering hair transplants read this first, please.
I read other parts of the book that would be relevant to some friends this book is a great one, I have 3 more books about hair loss one is pretty good but abit out dated, the other is OK , and the other I will use to start a fire.

5-0 out of 5 stars a must-have
This book is a must-have for every woman and teenage girl.Provides a wealth of info about female hormones & physiology in an easy-to-read format.Dr. Redmond is a leader in his field, and his depth of knowledge and compassion emerge effortlessly from the text.

If you are a woman suffering with unexplained hair loss on your head, hair growth where you don't want it, irritability, constant fatigue, dry skin or other skin problems and you are starting to feel generally more like a man than the beautiful woman you used to be, this book is for you. There ARE medications that can help you although most doctors will ignore and dismiss you. I went to see Dr. Redmond and he was able to help me, it was worth the trip into NYC and every penny. I feel like myself again and that is a miracle. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing !!!!
I am trying to adhere to an elimination diet in hopes of eliminating my migraines.I am trying to strictly eliminate "all" potential trigger foods. This is very hard to do(due to the sheer number of potential triggers). I purchased this book thinking that the recipes would be helpful.I was wrong. Only a handful of recipes did not contain potential trigger foods. If I was trying to "limit" potential trigger foods, the book would have been useful; but, I'm trying to eliminate "all" possible trigger foods. The book wasn't what I had hoped for. ... Read more

This book is the companion to a book that we hope you will share with your patient: Managing Migraine: A Patient's Guide to Successful Migraine Care. The books are designed to be used in concert and provide a template from which a therapeutic partnership can be established and a base from which the patient and clinician can effectively explore migraine. The four authors approach the subject of migraine from slightly different perspectives. Two authors are neurologists, one is a family doctor, and one a psychologist; all are practicing physicians. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If knowledge is power prepare to be SuperDoc
Tap into the power of Self Efficacy with bibliotherapy. If your patients are seeking a purely pharmacological solution for their migraines, chances are neither they or you will be satisfied.Pills are only part of solution (and in chronic migraine an even smaller part)

It is best to think of Migraine as the product of a sensitive nervous system that doesn't manage change well. The best treatments are directed at strengthening the underlying irritable nervous system so that it becomes stable, produces fewer episodes of disabling head pain, and moves towards healing.

Migraines are a CHRONIC condition.Your patients didn't just catch migraine for a week. This is why this title and its patient companion book are so important in that it puts the focus on what your patientcan do to "Manage" your migraine--so that it doesn't control their lives.

In any chronic condition it is important that patients do things on a daily basis to care for their condition. As you know studies show that the more a patient learns about their condition the better they do.So simply put Knowledge is power-What you Know, You can Master!!!

For the first time leading headache doctors have collaborated in producing a title on Migraine headaches in two volumes; one for the doctor and one for the patient.Drs Cady, Farmer, Lipton, and Bigal have proposed a system for migraine (based on frequency of attacks and their impact on daily life and outlook) that stages the patients and maps out a course for healing. This allows for targeted interventions based on the patient's current stage.

I would recommend using this book in combination with 10 Simple Solutions to Migraines by Dawn Marcus, MD. 10 Simple Solutions will help you learn about your headaches and "Managing Migraines" will teach your patients how to apply that knowledge.

And for those patients that only want a pill ask them how bad they want to get better? Or as Sean Connery ask in The Untouchables; "What are you willing to do?"Migraine is always more than 'just a headache'. It deserves to be treated as such.

Product Description

In the United States, eighteen percent of women, six percent of men, and four percent of children suffer from migraine headaches. All races are affected, although, for reasons which are unknown, whites are more likely than African Americans to be afflicted with the condition, and Asian Americans are least often migraine sufferers. Migraine is an inherited condition-many families can trace it back for generations-and it has enormous economic and social consequences, both to individual sufferers, and to the society as a whole. The cost to the U.S. society alone is in excess of $13 billion per year in lost productivity and in health care.

Understanding Migraine and Other Headaches provides up-to-date information on the causes and diagnoses, as well as current preventive measures, effective treatments, and surgical procedures. The book gives an overview of every major type of headache, including the debilitating, nausea-inducing forms of migraine, episodic tension-type headaches (the most common form), chronic daily headaches, and more obscure head-aches such as trigeminal neuralgia and cluster headaches.

This book is intended for those who are burdened by headaches as well as for their families, coworkers, employers, and friends. As such, it is written in a lucid and simple style that is accessible both to lay readers and medical professionals.

In the last two decades, revolutionary new migraine-specific medications have been developed. This book undertakes a comprehensive look at medications for acute "as needed" treatment of headaches and for preventing the onset of an attack. It offers guidelines for assessing headache pain, the level and type of medication needed, possible side effects, and drug effectiveness.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will definitely understand migraines after reaidng this book!
This is an excellent book for anyone that suffers from chronic headaches. It will help you identify the different types of headache as well as how the headaches occur in the brain. He explains the different medications that are out there and how they work. There are also some natural remedies, such as magnesium and B2.It is written in an easy to understand format for the general public, so you won't have to be a doctor to understand this book. If you're having lots of headaches, definitely read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great review of headaches and migraine in particular
I am an otolaryngologist (aka ENT doctor) who sees a lot of patients with "sinus headache", most of whom have migraines.Although this book is presumably written for the lay person, and does a nice job for that audience, I have highly recommended this book to many doctors in training, and for physicians who see migraine patients, but may not have a lot of personal experience or professional experience with treating migraines. Its very readable, concise, and practical.I'm going to buy a couple of copies for my students to use while they are working with me!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the very best!
Anyone who experiences headaches and Migraines or knows someone who does needs some good books about headaches and Migraine in our libraries. This book is a quite worthy addition to anyone's library. Written "for general readers," the book is, "a comprehensive overview of causes, diagnoses, and treatments" written in a logical, easy flowing style. You'll find it complete, up-to-date, and easy to understand. Bravo! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful advice
I have suffered for migraines for decades now, and tried many different therapies prescribed by various neurologists (anti-depressants, botox, anti-seizure medications, etc.)

When I came upon this book, I figured I had nothing to really lose. After all, the cost of the book is less than my co-pay to see a doctor - and doctors don't give money-back guarantees like Dr. Jones does with this book!

At first reading I was sure this book was written for me. He described my symptoms to a T. I had already read The Migraine Cure: How to Forever Banish the Curse of Migraines by Sergey A., M.D., Ph.D. Dzugan and Deborah Mitchel and was convinced that most of what we hear from doctors about migraines is wrong (diet, stress etc.). I was sure hormones were likely involved. Dr. Jones confirmed that.

He also laid out a relatively inexpensive treatment program consisting of three supplements (now five in the latest edition). I appreciated the fact that Dr. Jones was very specific about what works for most of the women he treats and insists that you didn't have to fly to Houston to see him...you can just try the program and find out if it works for you.

(By the way, that was the difference between his book and Dr. Dzugen's which was basically a sales pitch for his very expensive treatment program that you couldn't implement without his consultation.)

It worked for me. I have far fewer migraines than in the past, and feel better as well. However, I would add that it wasn't an overnight cure. In fact, it wasn't until he recently released an updated version that called for higher doses of the supplements along with Vitamin D and certain types of fish oil, that I really saw a significant and lasting decrease in the number of headaches. (In fact, one day I actually aborted a migraine using his recommendation for Vit. D and fish oil. That's never happened to me before without prescription medication.)

I am still getting a few migraines and experimenting to see if I can get down to none. I went 40 days without one recently - a record for me!

This book is very simple, straightforward, easy to read and to follow. Yes, you'll have to buy some supplements...and at least one is only available through the company he is affiliated with. I really don't mind. I had paid far more for solutions that didn't work. It's not terribly expensive, and it works.

I'd encourage women to read the book, and if what he talks about sounds right to you, try the treatment regiment. Stick with it for at least several months to give it a fair shot.

I'll also add that I emailed his office and got a fast and personalized response to my question.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
This book contains good information and is written using understandable language. However, it is badly edited (repetitive). It is a small book, even with the repeated information to plump it up. All things considered, I would say it is overpriced. Perhaps buy it as an electronic book instead... But, if you're a woman suffering from migraines, it is worth a read. The information is helful. I am glad I spent the money- I am just annoyed that such a tiny book could cost so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes a few weeks then WORKS LIKE A CHARM !
Dr. Jones is one of those rare MD's who's willing to tell you the TRUTH. He isn't "in bed" with the pharmaceutical industry, like most physicians are. It makes me sad that so many women are taking prescription drugs when they don't need to. They're treating the SYMPTOMS instead of fixing the underlying problem. I found Dr. Jones hormone regimen to be very effective and it makes perfect sense as to WHY it works. I immediately began to feel better (within 48 hours), then it took about 3 weeks for my migraines to completely disappear. They've been gone now for 7 months and more importantly, my energy and zest for life has returned, FULL FORCE. Bio-identical hormones, to me, are a miracle. I now take iodine for my thyroid, a little magnesium, and bioidentical estrogen and progesterone (as does Oprah Winfrey and Robin McGraw (Dr. Phils wife) - see the February edition of O Magazine). I've also learned to eat "Alkaline" which I also believe is beneficial (great book on this is "The Acid - Alkaline Food Guide" by Dr. Susan Brown). As well, a large Swedish study of over 28,000 women has shown that bioidentical hormones actually protect women against cancer and heart disease. Why would anyone take horse derived Premarin, when they could take a molecule that's exactly the same as the hormone your body naturally produces? Premarin contributes to cancer because your body cannot recognize this molecule. There's some GREAT information about bioidentical hormones on the YouTube videos. Have a look. I read the other review saying that the "company cannot be reached" however I've had no problem contacting them. People also have to understand that he and his company must get a great many emails and unless you have some huge staff, it's not always possible to answer every personal health question. All I can say is "THANK YOU, THANK YOU Dr. JONES ... you're literally a life saver!

5-0 out of 5 stars IT WORKS!!!!
The advice the Doctor tells you in this book WORKS!He also wrote a book about PMS and the advice given in that book WORKS as well.I won't tell you what he says to do just believe me when I say it does work.It isn't fair to him if I tell you what to buy..... he wrote the book he deserves the credit for the cure. The cost of the book is nothing since what he tells you to do really WORKS!!!!My daughter uses the vitamins he recommends for PMS and she has changed. She no longer suffers from PMS.The vitamins he recommends for migraines made mine disappear.Dr. Andrew Jones is amazing.....

1-0 out of 5 stars No Luck Here....
I get apprx. 3 severe migraines per month that each last 1 to 3 days. I bought the book and then the recommended products. I have tried the recommended treatment for two months (maybe a little longer). There has been absolutely no improvement to my migraines. I'll finish up the last of the progesterone, but I seriously doubt I'll buy more to give it more time to work. I feel like this is probably a scam, but I suppose you never know what will work for one person yet not another. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Vital Resource For Understanding Our War In Afghanistan
When you read this book, you will suddenly begin to understand what any foreign power is up against in Afghanistan. These people might as well have dropped from the planet Mars. Their customs and beliefs are so different from those of our ownWestern civilization that no compromise is possible.

You need to realize that the Afghans are infected with a vicious mental virus that forces them to hate and kill everyone else. Putting modern weapons in the hands of these space aliens, which we did when we armed them to fight Soviet expansionism, was the worst mistake we ever made. Afghanistan has always been the perfect terrain to fight a guerilla war, and this is still true today.

Our mechanized army does very well when fighting a sandbox war on flat terrain, as with Saddam Hussein. But our kind of army bogs down when confronted with a landscape which is mostly vertical. Air power is not the answer, because our helicopters are easily shot down by Stinger-type missiles of the kind that the CIA taught the Afghans to use. Afghanistan is Vietnam raised to the fourth power, a guaranteed recipe for military disaster.

Their only real weakness is their inability to grow their own food. As Litvinov pointed out nearly 100 years ago, the lack of food can be used as a weapon. So we could blow up their roads and starve them out, if we had the guts to do it. If you disagree with anything I've said here, you really need to read this book and acquaint yourself with the facts of the case. You can't make a scorpion any less dangerous by treating it with kindness!

5-0 out of 5 stars To be read by the pentagon
Read this book when it first came out and referred to it after 9/11. Answers the question on why Bin Laden is still at large. Should be required reading by every field officer in Afghanistan. Book is well written with political as well as tactical events that shaped the British trials for over 100 years in the Northwest Frontier. A great read that speaks to todays events.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific history!
This is the very best sort of popular history, colorful, well-
written, and unencumbered by massive footnotes.Even
better, it resonates with our new interests in Afghanistan
and Pakistan, indeed the entire Northwest Frontier area.
An updated edition should include the Soviet debacle, the
rise and destruction of the Taliban, and the American
presence in Afghanistan. But read it anyway if you are
fortunate enough to find a copy! ... Read more

Migraine headaches are familiar and generally treatable ailments. Less understood are migraine auras or scotoma, visual distortions — sometimes accompanied by headache and sometimes not — that make it difficult, sometimes impossible, to see clearly. Migraine auras can be frightening, disorienting, even incapacitating. Richard Grossinger, who has suffered from them himself, here presents a helpful guide to the subject that maps the terrain, describes the various forms migraine auras can take, charts his personal experiences with them, and offers informed suggestions for homeopathic and other treatments. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I wanted this book to be great...
As a migraine sufferer who experiences aura with roughly 50% of her attacks, I was eager to read this book and I suppose that I had high expectations.I feel terribly let down by the author, however, and I will share with you why.I wouldn't have given the book any stars, but I guess the first 1/3 of the book deserves something.

My migraines went chronic a little over a year ago.I've always had them with aura, and the majority were menstrual-related. When they went chronic, I began to seek treatment from a local migraine and headache specialist, because, let's face it, if you've experienced even one migraine, you can only imagine the horror of living that chronic migraines are.I also took great care when I began to research migraine, its causes, and its treatments.I've been on Topamax and failed it, and now call Toprol (a beta-blocker) my wonder-preventative.I also have the accursed PFO, a congenital heart defect now being studied for its link to migraine with auras.A study in which I am also participating.

Mr. Grossinger is NOT a doctor. He suffers from aura, and probably silent migraines at that.Aura is simply one phase of a migraine attack--pain is only one symptom that an individual may experiences that tells them they are going through the process of a migraine. One does not have to have pain in order to experience migraine. But the author seems to think that aura is not a harmful nor potentially harmful occurrence for those that suffer them.On its own, lasting from a few minutes to an hour, aura is not harmful. But beyond an hour, an aura may indicate something a bit more sinister--stroke, or a rise in your chances of having one.People are not familiar with migrainous strokes, but people do die from them, a fact that Grossing has the opportunity to alert his reader to, but one which he fails in doing.Any migraine with pain lasting 72 hours, with less than a 4-hour break is considered Status Migrainous and requires emergency medical intervention.Sadly, this is a fact overlooked by the majority of people who think of migraine as being a simple headache.

Migraine is *not* a headache, another fact that is overlooked by Grossinger. The components that make a headache are the complete opposite of what makes a migraine.Headaches do not make you sick--not like migraines. He calls migraines non-life threatening, as if having your life torn apart by dealing with this disease on a day-to-day basis is not considered "debilitating" or otherwise very difficult to live around.Just ask those who suffer invisibly with migraine if their lives aren't altered by dealing with this disease.Yes, I called migraine a disease, because that is what it is, another fact glossed over by the author. They are a genetic neurological disorder, not random physical bouts with vision loss and pain to be treated as transcendental experiences that call upon the life and death cycle as Grossinger carelessly explains in his book.

Another point missed by Grossinger:PFO cannot be closed voluntarily as a therapy option for those who suffer migraine and are found to have the defect.Somehow, in his sweeping, "grand" research, he missed the boat here.PFO closure for migraine is only available in the few study trials that are going on across the world. If you have had 2 of a certain type of stroke within a certain time period, and are found to have a PFO, then it can be closed surgically with the support of insurance. But for those of us who suffer migraine with PFO, there are currently no options for closure, which is why the PFO trials are ongoing.

The next point missed by Grossinger:that the preventatives for migraine are "worse" than the spade of symptoms that often accompany the attacks.Topamax is currently the only migraine preventative that I know of that has the highest number of side effects complaints from those who have or who are currently taking it.But for those for whom it works, it really works, and all seem to agree that they'd take it over the daily agony of a throbbing head and a seat next to the toilet.Grossinger seems to have something against medically-pushed preventatives or abortives like triptans, touting instead the supplements and homeopathic side to treating migraines. What Grossinger also misses in this instance, is that the best of migraine specialists work with their patients to find a treatment regimen that works, that often involves a mix of these pharmacological and herbal supplements, with a side dose of acupuncture, massage, biofeedback, and chiropractics if the patient finds them therapeutic and beneficial. To him, the big, bad drug companies and big, bad doctors don't want you to know about what's available outside of the doctor's notepad, and that's simply not true. What works for one migraineur will not work for another, and we all have different reactions to potential side effects of any given drug. However, he over-exaggerates that the side effects are worse than the attacks themselves, going back to the adage of, "why chronically treat a slew of symptoms that aren't life threatening or life altering for a few hours' relief?"

Despite the problems that I have with this book, there is a little that is good there. The first third with a description of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome is really neat to read from.I liked discovering people like me, who suffer aura and the things they made from it.But on the whole, having to trudge through a style of writing that does not benefit anyone who is not familiar with the medical terms used for the phenomena and processes in migraine, the book becomes a total bust.

If you need to know about migraines, read Teri Roberts' book:"Living Well with Migraine Disease and Headaches".She's a straight-shooting
migraine sufferer and long-time migraine patient advocate whose book is easy to relate to, easy to understand, and easy to read.None of us should suffer in silence and it's time to break through the misunderstandings that many in the medical community and those outside of it who continue to stigmatize migraine for what it isn't.It's a pity that this book could not contribute to that effort. In fact, it seems to set the effort back about 100 years. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Timely, accurate info- Nicely done, good price
... As a Clinical Massage Therapist I am always looking foraccurate information to pass on to my patients (at the Hospital) andclients (in my private practice).I have found all of the AmercanCollege books to be accurate and timely enough to have confidence whengiving them out that I am providing a good resource. If I did not, Icertainly would not recommend them here!

Why not 5 stars? For thesimple reason that the authors STILL are not taking into considerationthe massive amount of Medically proven information availableconcerning Massage Therapy when making recommendations for treatment. It may just be the fact that "when you live your life as ahammer, every problem looks like a nail", but with over 300medical journal articles written since Sep, 1997 touting thebeneficial effects of Massage Therapy for everything from chronic painto migraines to breast pain and the prevention of cancers, it seemsthat there would be SOME kind of mention of it in a book produced byThe American College of Physicians.

Aside from this one complaint, Ihave found this to be an EXCELLENT book and would recommend it foranyone with chronic headaches! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A solid review of migraine evaluation and treatment
Loder and Marcus edit a solid review of the current thinking in migraine evaluation and treatment. The book seems to be most appropriate for physicians and other healthcare professionals interested in migraine, as well as savvy patients interested in learning more about their own headaches.Despite the title, I believe that much of the text applies generally to both female and male patients, and then has an excellent review about specific issues with women. There are also chapters dealing with sociological and psychological factors specifically in female patients.

The book starts with a general review of migraine headache pathogenesis and patient evaluation. The bulk of the book is on migraine treatment in general, and as related to specific female patient groups; adolescents, menstrual migraines, migraines in pregnancy, migraines in menopause, and migraines with oral contraception and hormone replacement therapy. There is an excellent diagram in chapter six, the kind that medical residents would copy for those little private notebooks that they always carry around, that shows which medications are appropriate during each phase of the headache. There is a chapter for non-medical approaches to migraine treatment including biofeedback, relaxation therapy, and other alternative therapies.

This is the kind of book that you would read through fully, and then keep in your office bookcase to reference when you have a tough patient waiting in the exam room. The book is a quick clincial consultant, and there is also a CD-rom version enclosed with the book's text, figures, and charts.

Overall, a good idea for anyone that has to treat migraines.

4-0 out of 5 stars More Exercises Needed! - But Great Information
Although this book was not what I had expected it to be (i.e. a detailed book
with many pages devoted to breathing exercises e.g. paced breathing techniques etc)
I did not regret the purchase, in fact I was very impressed.

The reason why I rate this work so highly is because it offers a fresh perspective on
dealing with so called psychosomatic/psychophysiological ailments e.g. panic attacks, phobias
includingheadaches, migranes, hyperventilating, gasping for breath, Raynaud's condtions,
cold hands etc. The idea that irregular breathing patterns are at the heart of most disorders, although not surprising, is explained extremely well in terms of acid-base levels in the blood.

The primary topic dicussed in this book is hyperventilation. And as an Asthma sufferer I did
not think this work would be useful to me (since I usually struggle to get any air let alone overbreathe!), but I was very wrong!! This book was a great buy, because I now understand
the driving factors for my breathing difficulties from a scientific point of view.
    i.e. inhale/exhale ratios, CO2 levels, warms/cold hands etc.

I only have 2 criticisms, the last chapter about Music and Breathing seemed a little out
of place and mostly irrelevent. And secondly there isnt much on breathing techniques,
the only thing that is covered is deep diaphragmatic breathing (whist in the sitting position)
    - which is great if thats all you want!

    5 stars for information/nutrition/theory content
2 stars for practical exercises with deep breathing

1-0 out of 5 stars Save your money this book is a fraud
I buy many books, never before gave up reading a book just within 30 minutes of browsing through various chapters looking for substance. I'm a person who has recovered from major depression which also entailed daily anxiety attacks and hyperventilation. I overcame my affliction by sheer will power through enormous love that I felt for my family and myself. I did that through redirecting my energy to change the things that I didn't like in my life. I also accomplished that through drastic change in my diet and through daily exercise for the last ten years. I was looking for a book to teach me better breathing, because by nature I'm a person who gets to excited in reaction to anything. This is a guy who one day decided to write a book by exploiting the most obvious things. The book is made of many anecdotes and repetition of many facts most people already know. Never before did I wish to return a book and ask for a refund. This time I do. This book will not go into my library, but it will go where my daily junk mail goes, the trash. .

4-0 out of 5 stars A good interdisciplinary book
This book is good because it emphasizes breathing techniques to attenuate stress-induced conditions (ex. Asthma, Anxiety). But again, as with most stress books, it falls short on recommending proper nutritional supplementation. Most Asthma books don't recommend any holistic/herbal remedies; they only recommend pharmaceutical drugs. A few Asthma books like these do recommend natural remedies, but these remedies are often unproven, and can be dangerous if mixed with other drugs/alcohol. I am really disappointed in all Asthma books in general, because they most often do not recommend the three most important ORTHOMOLECULAR Asthma remedies: Calcium, Magnesium, and Vitamin C. Calcium is simply there to balance magnesium and to chelate with ascorbate (vitamin C) to make calcium ascorbate. Magnesium relaxes lungs and improves air flow. Last and certainly not least, vitamin C has potent antihistamine effects via inhibiton of mast cell degranulation, and also has bronchodilator effects via inhibition of phosphodiesterase. Taking several grams
a day of vitamin C (preferably buffered calcium ascorbate), along with some magnesium may completely inhibit mild asthma, and should significantly help moderate to severe asthma, with no known drug interactions (except perhaps with Theophylline, which inhibits the same phosphodiesterase enzyme that vitamin C does). These three natural supplements also play very important roles in maintaining mental health. This information is referenced in the Allergies/Asthma chapter and Chronic Mental Illnesses Part of my book "The Failures of American Medicine", available here at Amazon...

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic, Easy to Read Golden info, From A World Expert
There are a lot of books on breathing. This is probably the only one aimed at laymen that has been written by a world class respiratory psychophysiologist who has written numerous professional texts on various aspects of respiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with practical info that DOES work!
After learning the author's breathing techniques, I have been able to relax more and get to the heart of my symptoms.Easy to follow and comprehend. No outer-worldly stuff here, just factual informationregarding how breathing correctly will eliminate many of the stresses inyour life.I highly recommend this book! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars You are not alone!
This book is mainly a compilation of quotes from migraine sufferers. The woman that put the book together wrote a little about each section before listing the quotes. That's why I gave it only four stars.

That said, it is still a good book to read.If you are a migraine sufferer, it will make you laugh, cry, relate, and best of all realize that there are many others out there with extremely similar experiences to your own.It is a book of affirmation and strength for the migraine sufferer.I even learned something about my own migraines; I've had symptoms that were never covered in the migraine books and that I had never known another sufferer to have (my sister, mother, and grandmother all suffer(ed) from migraine) but I found them here.

The many sufferers that contributed have put the perils we all feel into words for other sufferers and non-sufferers alike to understand. If you can get someone close to you to read this to help them understand, they will be more sympathetic. If you have never had a migraine and wonder what it is like, these souls will give you a very good idea.

Just a note to any migraine sufferers out there: one person mentioned how she put a plastic coat hanger on her head for relief.Try it, I'm wearing one right now! It's better than beating your head against the wall, just make sure you get a comfortable one. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for migraineurs and their support systems.
Anyone that has migraine or knows someone close to them with migraine should have this book!

It really lets you into the perspective of what it takes to be with such a horrible disease.

4-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening & Informative
Previously I gave this book a harsh and unfair reveiw but after reading it again due to another reviewer telling me that it hepled them I can honestly say that it has some very helpful techniques and advise that have improved my condition when many doctors wrongly told me that their traditional approach was the only one that would work and it did not. This book is definately worth reading for anyone with sleep apnea or any of the other conditions that are mentioned.

5-0 out of 5 stars lower your eye pressures
I have had high eye pressures for my whole life. Having high eye pressure can contibute to glacoma. My eye doctor has suggested laser eye surgery more than once.(not the fun kind either!)I had searched the internet for anything that could help me out and this was the only reference that came up.
I bought the book 6 months ago and worked the simple "solution" to my eye issues. My pressures were close to 30(29.5) after 4 months the left is down to 20 and the right 26.I am extremly happy to avoid and surgery or medication. Its also helped me with another problem listed in the book.

BUY THIS BOOK if you have any of these medical problems issues. Its a cheap easy solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing difference
i had a migraine for a month. i bought the book. by using a 14 inch wedge under my pillow and sleeping with my head raised--the headaches have almost completely stopped, immediately. the book explains the whys behind it, cranial pressure etc. it certainly worked quickly for me and i was at the point of desperation and prescription painkillers were not working. (i am not a kid but i like my privacy)

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it works
My initial skepticism about this theory did not survive after reading the first few chapters.Disguised as a ridiculously simple lifestyle change, this is a major medical breakthrough.

Like an overwatered houseplant, the brain can suffocate if it's constantly bathed in too much blood and lymph. The connection to Alzheimer's disease and strokes is powerfully suggestive (but will take many years to prove conclusively.)

I'm not going to wait and see.I've been sleeping with my head elevated for a few weeks now and I'm delighted with the results. No more headaches in the morning!I used to get them often and they would last all day.

And when I take a nap now, the transition back to wakefulness is smooth and serene - unlike the sudden shock it used to be.Friends I've suggested this to have had similar results.

Finally, I'd like to commend the authors for their honesty in confronting the medical establishment. Many doctors have known for a long time about the benefits of head elevation to reduce brain edema, but there's no profit in teaching patients how to heal themselves. Simple remedies like this one could put many unscrupulous physicians out of business.

This discovery, combined with the one the authors have made linking bras to breast cancer, make them (at least in my mind) worthy of the Nobel Prize.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny Title - Serious Book
I read this book in connection with my sleep apnea, but also had in mind as I read a friend with migranes. The basic premise is that migranes may be caused by increased pressure in the head that is due to sleeping position (level or single pillow) and that it may be remediable by sleeping with an 8" - 12" wedge under the head-side of the bed.Sounds simple and perhaps too simple but the authors do a good job of explaining their position and showing their rationale, and they also cite a small study they have done that showed very positive results. For persons suffering from migranes that are not well-treated by conventional means, I would certainly recommend this book. The treatment approach is simple and inexpensive, and will not cause any harm if ineffective; if I had migranes I would certainly try it, and I will mention the book to my friend. ...
