5-0 out of 5 stars Covers a decade in the life of Boxoffice Magazine
This autobiography covers a decade in the life of Boxoffice Magazine: a period during which Greene had access to the top names of Hollywood, from actors to executives. 1990s Hollywood history is revealed from an insider's viewpoint, providing articles of both personal reflections and encounters with industry leaders.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good one for contemporary film fans
I was surprised by this book, which I bought on a trip from Europe to the USA and read on the plane, and afterward. I was looking for something to read that wouldn't be too taxing. The dust cover copy made me think I was buying a book about celebrities, but there's actually a lot more going on here than that. The majority of the content is a thoughtful grouping of essays about the business and aesthetics of Hollywood in the 1990s - what the movies claimed to be about, what they were actually about, and how they shaped their arguments in such a way as to reflect, sometimes unintentionally, the tenor of the times. The writer has made me think differently about what I assumed to be a trivial era of moviemaking, and see the period with new eyes. And the book, while long, is easy to read, at times quite humorous, at times rather surprisingly serious.

I would recommend that anyone purchasing this book use the glossaries as a way of organizing their reading. Although this book is arranged in sections, each individual chapter within a given section is complete within itself, and can therefore be read in whatever sequence the reader chooses based on his or her interests. I reread some essays, skipped a few entirely. By and large, I found "Hollywood Migraine" quite instructive, even though I consider myself already knowlegeable as a film fan. ... Read more

Product Description
Migraine has evolved into a giant puzzle and its literature comprises a vast loosely-linked enterprise challenging human problem-solving capacity. There is no central idea in migraine to elaborate a general theory which in turn could ultimately lead to creation of a unifying hypothesis that collects the various strands of evidences into a coherent and logically defensible intelligible synthesis. Current pathogenetic concepts of migraine, in particular cortical spreading depression (CSD), do not focus on the precise onset of the attack. Neither the aura nor the headache represents the true beginning of a migraine attack. The primary or causal physiological alteration underlying migraine lies in the 'pre-prodromal' phase, the variable interim between exposure to the headache-provoking stimulus or situation and the onset of the migraine prodrome. The migraine prodrome itself can last several hours to a few days. Since CSD is believed to underlie both the migrainous scintillating scotoma as well as the headache, it cannot be regarded as an early or initial 'pre-prodromal' physiological event. The biology of migraine is not the study of laboratory 'markers' but the elucidation of physiological forces (trait and/or state factors) that push (precipitate) or pull (predispose) patients towards aura/headache or aura/headache-free state. The pathophysiology of migraine has been hitherto confined to analyses of diverse precipitating and remitting factors and uncertain postulations about recorded laboratory aberrations into presumptive causal algorithms. The key cranial physiological system involved in migraine remains unidentified. Migraine attacks occur during stress and, more commonly, after cessation of stress. The author has earlier proposed that a physiological neuroendocrine 'system' comprised of well-regulated parallel activation of the vasopressinergic, intrinsic brain serotonergic, and intrinsic brain noradrenergic systems constitutes an important adaptive mechanism that governs vascular integrity, antinociception, behaviour and overall function during stressful occasions, including migraine attacks.Such a conceptual template can be used to segregate the vast phenomenology of migraine into primary pathogenetic or secondary non-pathogenetic divisions; non-pathogenetic migrainous phenomena can be further subdivided into adaptive and concomitant (epiphenomenal) physiological events. Nausea and/or vomiting, facial pallor, Raynaud's phenomenon, episodic daytime sleepiness, and relative hypotension (both spontaneous as well as induced by prophylactic anti-migraine pharmacologic agents) likely reflect the non-pathogenetic (adaptive or epiphenomenal) clinical components of migraine. The pathophysiological basis of aura/headache and nausea/vomiting of migraine is very unlikely to be identical. Exogenous magnesium does not readily cross the intact blood-brain barrier and decreases the permeability of the blood-brain barrier. Magnesium depletion appears to serve an important adaptive function; its utility in migraine management is not convincing.Magnesium depletion, platelet activation, peripheral alterations in serotonin and catecholamine metabolism, hyper-responsiveness of brain noradrenergic, serotonergic, vasopressinergic, and dopaminergic systems, parasympathetic nevous system activation, pupillary miosis, and cutaneous allodynia probably represent some of the secondary adaptive physiological mechanisms operative in migraine.A critical or central role for brain neuronal involvement in migraine pathogenesis appears unikely as established migraine preventive agents like atenolol, nadolol, and verapamil do not readily cross the intact blood-brain barrier or influence brain neuronal function. Antidepressants, including amitriptyline, induce brain noradrenergic and serotonergic hyperfunction, rendering highly unlikely that such brain states underlie migraine. Elucidation of adaptive physiological mechanisms in migraine can rationalise important epidemiological, clinical, and pharmacological features and sow the seeds for evolution of an integrative synthesis which process, in turn, might herald the creation of a comprehensive thought framework and research vision for migraine. ... Product Description
This is a self-help book for people who suffer from headaches. It looks at this common scourge of humans from an allergist's viewpoint, an important viewpoint because allergy commonly causes headaches. To aid you in discovering if you suffer allergic headaches and to teach you how to fight them, it introduces and discusses subjects in an orderly manner that is easy to read.

TREATING SINUS, MIGRAINE AND CLUSTER HEADACHES, MY WAY begins by defining allergy and headaches simply, letting you know how they are different and also, why they really are similar. It then looks at the moisture, dust mites and mold at home, school and work that make your head hurt. Examining the home, it tells you how to find and correct conditions that nurture these headache-makers, conditions you can change to better the air quality of your home.

Moving out of the home, it next examines the pet, pollens of summer, cigarette smoking, air quality at work, and foods and beverages in the diet. Each contributes to the pain people suffer. The possibilities and limitations of avoiding these exposures are looked at frankly.

No book by an allergist would be complete if it failed to mention the special tools of the allergist: history, medications, skin testing and allergy injection treatment. This book describes them in everyday language that allows you to consider if testing or treatment may help you. It also tells you why your allergist may not help relieve your headache pain.

Finally, it reaches the reason that this book was written. It describes the perfect home for the allergic headache sufferer. Although you may never live in this ideal home, its ideas will help you improve your own home. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it's written on
If someone has reached the point of researching topics such as headaches, allergies, and migraines I'm assuming they have also had many vistits with various Doctors and Specialists. Many of the recommended "do's and don'ts' had caused me more problems. Both my E.N.T. and Allergist Specialists had agreeded that this guy had some extreme thoughts that basicly made me worse.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for migraine sufferers
This book is a must read for migraine sufferers.Since reading the book 8 months ago I have decreased the frequency and severity of my migraines dramatically. But, in order to accomplish this I've had to alter my environment (trying to eliminate all allergens) and start receiving allergy shots.

The book does a great job of explaining why your headaches could be caused by allergies. It explains how allergies affect your system, and what you can do to fight them.It is well written and very easy to understand. It also explains how it is possible for allergens to cause headaches without the appearance of classic allergic symptoms (runny noise, congestion, etc.).

I'm thankful for the relief it has brought me, and I would encourage anyone who has migraines to give this a read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MIGRAINE:Winning the Fight of Your Life book
I have had this book for years & ordered one for a friend. It is VERY informative not only about the disease, but about the social issues a migraine sufferer has as a result of the disease. It also is very informative in knowing what triggers can cause a migraine & just knowing them & staying away from them has helped me immensely over the years. I use this book almost as much as my dictionary, as I have suffered migraines most of my life.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not tonight honey..I have a HEADACHE!
I am a Migraine sufferer! I not only get the painful headaches but I'm one of the lucky ones (20%) that gets the other wordly auras that go with it. The first time this happened I thought I was either having a stroke, going blind, or having a close encounter of Some kind. When I saw the cover of this book "Winning the fight of your life".."Fight off today's headache pain and PREVENT tommorrow's attack" I thought OKAY this is for me!.
Well although there is some useful information in this book, it really didn't help me too much. There was alot of charts and graphs concerning the history of migraine and the symptoms. I did learn the name of my particular one (Classic), It goes on to list many many remedies, drugs, herbs, methods of relaxation, acupuncture,(I draw the line at the one about standing on your head). What to do, what not to do, what to eat, what not to eat (in some cases these were the same things, very confusing),don't sleep too much, don't sleep too little, etc etc.
It would take me years of migraines to try all these different remedies and I would go broke doing it.
There was some useful information though, for instance, crushing medicine and taking it with a sweet warm drink will speed up the effect of the medicine. There was also a study in which 98% of the people with migraines got relief from spinal massages. This was all good advice(if I could just make sure there's someone around to give me the massage when I get the headache). There were other useful tips too, I would not completley write this book off.
This book is geared more toward a medical student learning to properly diagnose the type of headache. It would also helpful to have a medical dictionary at hand.
If you are interested in learning the FACTS about migraines in general this will be an interesting guide, but don't think of it as a cure.
Thanks......Laurie

5-0 out of 5 stars This book helped me to live a more normal life

I'vemissed a lot of meetings (at work) and private programs. Now I can handleit quite well, I've learned a lot from dr. Theisler! It's a bit like"I've got my life back" ! Thanks! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Passionate Author

Product Description
The potential involvement of neurogenic inflammation in the pathogenesis of the migraine headache and the inhibition of this mechanism as a possible mode of action of antimigraine medications are discussed in great depth in this volume. The topics are approached from a pathophysiological as well as a clinical experimental perspective by a renowned group of clinicians and scientists who carefully considers the current, future and potential therapeutic approaches to migraine treatment. The first chapters of the book address the impact of migraine on a personal and societal level, the presentation, pathogenesis and treatment of migraine as well as the role of neurogenic inflammation. Subsequent chapters present models of neurogenic inflammation related to the pathogenesis of the migraine headache, focussing on the mediators and their receptors, as well as on the involvement of mast cells. The possibility of inhibition of neurogenic inflammation in abortive and preventive migraine treatment is also extensively discussed and a chapter on the question of whether migraine is a neuroinflammatory disease concludes this comprehensive analysis. Clinicians and scientists interested in inflammation from a physiological or pharmacological perspective and those interested in the pathogenesis of headache - migraine in particular - are the intended audience for this unique body of work. ...
