5-0 out of 5 stars C'mon Dad I'm Not Making This Stuff Up!
My father is 87 year old, old school thinker. A pick yourself up by your bootstraps person, a self made millionaire.

Until I was disabled by BiPolar I was an EXTREMELY successful person in my Dad's eyes.I believe I was hypomanic for years. And there is nothing like a hypomanic employee to make a company happy.I went from a switchboard operator to a senior manager for a major automobile finance company in about 10 years.I was one level from becoming an executive when I became disabled.I was well compensated for my daily work which of course made my father extremely proud. So what that twice I had to come up with $100,000 to pay down my debts.Merely nuisances, right?

I became permanently disabled in 1988 with a deep depressive episode. I was hospitalized several times, needed ECT treatment, the whole gammit. It's hard to remember but I think I was in this black mood for several years.

I have said that to say this, now that I'm on disability with BiPolar, my father believes I'm a "loser".I have gained a significant amount of weight, I am a rapid cycler, don't make much money now, am drug resistant and see too many doctors.

This book was is well put together and put in understandable words for someone who has never heard of 'rapid cycler', BiPolar I and II.I have been able to highlight areas that directly talk about my condition.

He may never understand, but now I have given him a tool to read. Please pray that he will get a better understanding. ... Read more

Product Description
Growing up can be stressful for any teenager, but it is considerably harder for the many adolescents who develop an anxiety disorder. This book is an essential guide for parents, teachers, or other adults involved with teenagers who may e affected by these disorders. By bringing together two strands of expertise--that of mental health professionals and of parents who have lived through the experience of their own teenager's mental illness--If Your Adolescent Has an Anxiety Disorder provides adult readers with the clinical information and practical advice they need to understand and help the teen. There are chapters detailing four the different types of anxiety disorders, including social anxiety, generalized anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, and post-traumatic stress disorders. Each includes a clearly written definition, a discussion of factors that can contribute to developing the disorder, treatment information, and case studies based on a real family's own experience with the disease. Tips and quotes from parents are sprinkled liberally throughout the text, and helpful sidebars provide more detailed information. The authors also provide a chapter fully dedicated to discussing treatment options, including what role parents play in treatment, how to juggle treatment and school, and how to handle insurance and managed care issues. Knowing the right information about anxiety disorders is the first step towards helping adolescents who are dealing with them grow to become healthy, happy adults. ... Read more

Product Description
Surviving Manic Depression is the most comprehensive, up-to-date book on the disorder that affects more than two million people in the United States alone. Based on the latest research, it provides detailed coverage of every aspect of the disorder.

All aspects of the disease are addressed: symptoms, with many direct descriptions from patients themselves, risk factors, onset and cause, medications (including drugs still in the testing stage), causes, psychotherapy, and rehabilitation and how the disease affects children and adolescents. Here too are discussions of special problems related to manic-depressive disorder, including alcohol and drug abuse, violent behavior, medication noncompliance, suicide, sex, AIDS, and confidentiality. Surviving Manic Depression also includes special features such as a listing of selected websites, videotapes, and other resources.Amazon.com Review
If knowing one's enemy is key to surviving a prolonged encounter, then Surviving Manic Depression should prove essential reading to those who suffer from this brain disease's horrific highs and lows. Having immersed themselves in the topic, E. Fuller Torrey, M.D., and Michael B. Knable, D.O., offer a comprehensive resource for those afflicted with--or responsible for treating--manic depression. Unfortunately, a surprisingly small amount of data exists regarding its prevalence, and existing studies show conflicting results.

Torrey and Knable's emphasis on dissecting all that is known about the disease clearly indicates that "survival" entails neither escape nor eradication; rather, it requires a lifelong pledge to undertake an effective course of treatment. The first step: learning every suspected cause, symptom, risk factor, and treatment strategy. Sprinkled among statistic-laden paragraphs, touches of empathy arrive via articulate quotations from sufferers including Patty Duke and Kay Jamison. But the crux of Torrey and Knable's work is its compilation of all the informative bits and pieces readers need to build an effective action plan. Most helpful are the chapters that address special problems (including alcohol and drug abuse, violent behavior, medication noncompliance, and the seduction of mania); and their no-holds-barred reviews of books, selected Web sites, and videotapes. --Liane Thomas ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best I've found to help patients and families
This is the best resource for patients and their families. It is a "must read" for anyone involved with the complicated MH field. I have loaned mine out numerous times and the person usually ends up buying their own copy. It's a no nonsense informative book that allows people to read the many aspects of the disease. Dr. Torrey is an excellant advocate for families and patients. It gives suggestions tofamilies when their loved one is having trouble. If hospitalization is involved Torrey introduces the patient and family with many options they could explore. There is a section that includes websites and other resources which give support, advocacy and not to forget; the continual updates on the disease. I've worked in the MH field for many years and it is one book I constantly go back to for guidance. This book not only provides information it gives encouragement and hope. That is the most important message of all: there is hope.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surviving manic depression
Arrived quickly and in great shape. Will be a good resource book for work I do.

3-0 out of 5 stars Survival guide for bipolar
All of that information I already obtain throu the Internet saits. The book was nothing to do about reality of surviving-only main information about desease and main information (very old, thouh, it is another level of medicine already exist , for exsample, abilify). Nothing new for me, mother of bipolar child, who declines her medical help. Again, nothing about SURVIVING. Sorry, Natalia Seregin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Manual on Bipolar Disorder
This is a really helpful book. Great for trying to learn about this disorder and being supportive. Also very good for helping yourself understand better what's going on with your loved one with this disorder. Very, very good book. The other reviews were extremely helpful in my decision to buy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not so fun to read but some good information
Although there is a lot of good information in this book, getting beyond the first chapter is a challenge. When you begin reading, there is no engaging narrative style, just a series of subtitles with factual information underneath. If you are like me, this isn't the first information you are looking for...statistics on how many people have the disease (depends upon when and how you define it)...statistics on how many people are being treated in urban vs. rural settings...To make a long story short, this book does not grab you at all.You have to push through, as if you were reading an academic paper, to get information. There are no uplifting case histories referred to throughout the book that keep you interested (cases mentioned are usually one or two paragraph examples).Nor are there any new theories presented here - just a disjointed summary of the (disappointing) research that has been done thus far.The medication section is not up to date, since there was no mention of Lamictal as a treatment.I bought this book because of the good review here on Amazon, and was somewhat disappointed, so I felt compelled to add me own feelings for the benefit of those who might do the same. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If You Haven't Read This Book, You Do So Now
Although I've read many books that have guided me to be empowered, in the present moment and quite effective, I'm glad to have added this read to my commitment to endless grow.

Whether you are: into pyschology or not; think you've worked everything out; or you recognize that you have some habits that get in the way of your being who you are meant to be, read "Feeling Good."

In my case, I chose this because I was working with a subculture on an extended basis, and I couldn't figure out why I simultaneously was committed to being there, yet I struggled with finding a way to be compassionate to these people.

I needed to know how I was thinking; where my thinking was rooted; and, how my "subjects" if you will, dealt with the world.

In reading "Feeling Good," I was more able to be myself, adapt to my surroundings, and not lose myself in the midst of being around so many people whose outlook on life was "life happens to me, so leave me alone."And, this is putting it mildly.

Reading "Feeling Good," I re-affirmed my values, identified my limiting beliefs, and allowed myself to be more fully in the moment.

Another point that was of special interest to me was Chapter 6, "Verbal Judo:Learn to Talk Back When You're Under the Fire of Criticism."I had thought that the title was created by George Thompson, PhD, because his book, whiuch I read in the 90's is "Verbal Judo:The Gentle Art of Persuasion.

But "Feeling Good," and chapter 6 was written in the 80's.

Either way, it was wonderful to take anoter look at the cycle of how a person reacts to being verbally attacked.

Here is what happens, according to Dr. Burns, to someone being verbally attacked:

1.The person being attacked jumps to conclusions;
2.He arbitrarily concludes that the criticism is correct;
3.He exaggerates the importance of what the attacker said;
4.He predicts that he will be rejected and ruined amongst those who matter to him;
5.He is focused upon the subject of the attack, and not on the value of who he is; and,
6.He identifies with the intent of the attack.

If we are to imagine cyber bullying, which is very common now among children who haven't emotionally and psychologically evolved enough to separate who they are from the intent of the bully, being aware of this cycle, can help us to protect computer users from being cyber bullied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book
I bought this book used off of Amazon.com a couple of years ago.The book helped me recognize how distorted many of my thoughts were, and how those distorted thoughts were making me feel bad.By using the writing technique that the author teaches in the book, I am able to see the distortions in my thoughts, am able to rebut them, and then start to feel better. It really, truly works. You don't even have to read the book from start to finish.Just read chapters as you need them.Realizing that it was my thoughts that were causing me to feel so negative and down was a revelation in and of itself... and now, several years after first reading this book (I refer back to it occasionally), I continue to write out my thoughts, rebut them, and feel better.I would highly, highly recommend reading this book if you find yourself sad and depressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling Good. The New Mood Therapy Revised
This is an excellent book!I can't believe how well the doctor's approach works. It's easy for any one to do, and it gives you hope.I recommend this book to any one who is depressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect compliment to any AA, 12-step, recovery program!
Great read! Very straightforward. I'm only on page 70, and already I've found myself using the techniques outlined in the book.

**Especially great for a recovering addict in a 12-step program**

To be able to heal, we need to be receptive of new ideas, and even criticism of our existing idea. This book builds your mental toughness.

Loving it more with every read and action I take to build my self-esteem!

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible book among all the trash pop psychology out there
Dr. Burns' book was recommended to me by a professional. And, After reading this good along with some other writing of his, I can see why even those with years of experience in the fields of psychology, motivation, self help and coaching look at this guy as a total rock star. He's not some fly by night guru but a professional with decades on experience.

It is a must read for anyone who is dealing with depression or self-worth issues.

Burns gives a number of easy to follow techniques that are not difficult to incorporate into one's daily life. Through these techniques, the reader will learn to recognize the cause of his or her emotional distress and from there be able to activity challenge and defeat it.

Without knowing why you feel the way you do, you cannot really do anything about it. This book gives you the why and helps you to prevail.

This is an essential book for anyone considering lithium treatment for bipolar disorder (manic-depression) and also for anyone who is already taking lithium treatment.I used this book to decide whether to take lithium, and I have continued to refer to it over 23 years as questions have arisen during my lithium treatment. It has been invaluable. The book calls itself "A Practical Guide," and that is exactly what it is for the patient. It is clear, comprehensive, and accurate. It answers almost any question that one might have about treatment, side effects, risks, etc. The author is a well-known Danish psychiatrist who has had extensive experience with lithium treatment. 5-0 out of 5 stars helpful book
This was truly a survival guide for our family. Very informative and easy to read. The book arrived very quickly and in perfect condition.

2-0 out of 5 stars very basic
I didn't find any information in this book that was more in-depth than what can be found online at various sites like [...].All the information seemed "edited" to be politically correct, especially the medication, treatment options, and coping sections. The writing style is a little formal and, to an annoying degree, will ask a question and in the next sentence(s) answer that question, such as "So, what have we learned thus far?"... I would recommend spending your money instead on "Sometimes I Act Crazy: Living with BPD". (Don't let the title scare you away!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Clear and Easy
This is an easy read, where the technical jargon is minimal and clearly explained. It gives a good explanation as to what BPD is, what is likely to happen for people with BPD and those who are in contact with them. It clearly explains the combination of factors necessary for someone to get BPD and clears up many myths about the disorder.
It explains the major treatments (therapy and medication) that have been succesful with BPD.
This book is for anyone diagnosed with BPD, or those in contact with them and I would thoroughly recommend it for either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book. More technical than some.
This book is better than some others I've seen. It offers helpful advice and explanations. It's sometimes more technical like a textbook than another great book for BPD called "Lost in the Mirror, 2nd ed.". This book is written ABOUT BPD whereas The Mirror book is written is TO the BPD patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Source of Information
Amazing! This book is full of great information on the disorder, diagnosis, treatment, and examples of people struggling with BPD. This is a tricky disorder to find accurate information on, this book is a must have for anyone who is interested in, dealing with, or knows someone who has BPD. I especially appreciate how the author does not push drug treatments and warns about starting a drug treatment as well. Thorough research is presented relating to drug testing trials and effects that prescriptions have one people with BPD. Easy read, very informative. ... Read more

Product Description

For family members of people with borderline personality disorder (BPD), home life is routinely unpredictable and frequently unbearable. Extreme mood swings, impulsive behaviors, and suicidal tendencies—common conduct among those who suffer from the disorder—leave family members feeling confused, hurt, and helpless.

In her pioneering first book Stop Walking on Eggshells, co-authored with Paul T. Mason, Randi Kreger outlined the fundamental differences in the way that people with borderline personality disorder (BPD) relate to the world. Now, with The Essential Family Guide to Borderline Personality Disorder, she takes readers to the next level, giving them straightforward tools to get off the emotional roller coaster and repair relationships with loved ones with BPD. Kreger answers the questions family members most want to ask about:  the symptoms and treatment of BPD, including why BPD is so misdiagnosed; how symptoms can differ by age and gender; and how addiction and other disorders complicate BPD. She then outlines how families can set boundaries and communicate differently in order to help themselves and their loved ones cope with this bewildering form of mental illness.

4-0 out of 5 stars The essential family guide to borderline personality disorder: new tools and techniques to stop walking on eggshells
This book provided additional insight into BPD.I have tried some of the techniques suggested by the author and I must say they have worked better than I would have imagined. So I will continue to put the many suggestions into practice.Well written with theory and practical mixed in.I would recommend this to anyone who has to deal with a loved one with BPD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Service and product
I recieved the book in a timely manner. It was in brand new condition. Very Very Satisfied.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and thoughtful book
THis is a great book for folks who wonder what may be "wrong" with someone in their family---the truth is, without a professional diagnosis one can't be sure---but to me, the insights into challenging family members provided a unique and sympathetic approach to handling and supporting people who may or may not have BPD.The descriptions of the syndrome, the ways to approach and work to support people is terrific.I would recommend this book highly---it has been enormously helpful for me. The book is direct, practical and positive.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST read for families, friends, clinicians, doctors, etc.

I wish there was a better way to get the word out that this book is hands down a MUST read for anyone who has been impacted by someone they care about living with a personality disorder. I am a clinical social worker and I recommend this book whenever possible-- to the families of my clients, when I am giving presentations or teaching students. Although the book is specifically written for how to cope, understand and interact with someone living with BPD, Kreger offers some great suggestions for anyone in need of support for how to interact with a person having problems with interpersonal relationships and managing emotions.

You can read the first chapter "Welcome to Oz" in it's entirety on Google Books. However, there are two chapters I continually find to be the most helpful. Chapter 3: "Making sense of your relationship" is excellent. It offers insight for the reader to better understand how BPD features challenge a relationship. Kreger describes easy to understand concepts such as childlike characteristics, low emotional intelligence, rejection sensitivity and impulsive aggression. I also highly recommend Chapter 9: "Communicate to be heard," which educates the reader on BPD communication deficits and how to create a "climate of cooperation" with the person living with BPD. Kreger walks you through step by step how to verbally acknowledge what the other person is feeling. She offers specific words that can be used with the person such as "I want to hear about it, but it's hard for me when things get too emotional. I want to give you my full attention and that's too hard for me to do right now. Let me have a little while to calm down and then we can talk" Kreger's writing style is accessible and easy to follow. There are case examples in the book, but they are not too overpowering. The book is packed with useful information that will hit home for many readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight talk and upbeat. An excellent read.
Paul Jones strikes an excellent balance of medical information and true life experiences."The Up and Down Life" is straight talk about discerning choices bipolars need to make and offers examples of the pitfalls to watch out for. It's encouraging, eye-opening, inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfect title, perfect book
If you are bipolar or suspect you might be, or if you live with someone that fits the bipolar "profile"; then reading this book will be a great help. I know it helped me. I have spent most of my life having mixed feelings about the condition. Sometimes I'd be convinced that I had the disorder; other times, I laughed at the notion. It's so typical of the bipolar person to be in denial when everything is going okay. And there are plenty of times when you think all is well... but it doesn't last for too long.Eventually I would go from feeling okay to feeling totally awesome! Now I realize those were the times to be most alert because inevitably they would be followed by horrible downs. So yeah, it is an up and down life. I finally went to a qualified physician who confirmed my suspicions, and also prescribed the combination of meds that has made the difference. No, I am not "cured". But I'm in better shape than I ever was. Now I understand what some of the stuff in my past was all about. Too bad it took me so long to admit it to myself. The book was the eye-opener I needed to point me in the right direction. I know a lot of people hate taking medications for psycho-emotional problems; they prefer to go to counseling or tough it out. But for the bipolar person there's just as much need for medication as for the diabetic. And unfortunately suffering from bipolar disorder can also be a matter of life and death.

1-0 out of 5 stars Basic, glib and not too informative
First, let me say that I do not wish to criticize any individual's account of his mental illness and experience.Mr. Jones relays his experience with bipolar disorder in great detail. This is perhaps the most redeeming feature of this book. The book works best when Mr. Jones sticks to his personal experience with the ups and downs and his own personal experience with treatment.

Far too often, though, his tone comes across as preachy and pedantic. This is not recommended for someone who has already done extensive research on bipolar disorder and read several personal accounts of living with this illness. Ultimately, I suppose, this is the bottom line for this book: it may be helpful for the reader with little-to-no knowledge of BPD but even in that case I believe there must be better introductions.

Mr. Jones emphasizes that people with BPD should not define themselves by their illness. He consistently, however, refers to "we bipolars" and reduces his audience to exactly what he suggests avoiding -- complete identification with the disease. Granted, the book is about BPD and the language is geared toward those in the BPD community, so there is a degree of collective identification necessary. The tone, however, including Mr. Jones' own identity as "Bipolar Boy," casts an unfunny overemphasis on the diagnosis as identity. Moreover, his references to "bipolar boy" and "bipolar Paul" actually come across as self-promotion and there is an uncomfortable suggestion that this book is too self-aware and dips sometimes into marketing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enlightening
The price and shipping were great, the author was wonderful, really shed a lot of insight

5-0 out of 5 stars The truest book written on the subject
I read this book and it was like watching a movie of my life.I am bipolar as well as Paul is.I thought I was the only one like this.Nobody in my family or freinds understood it.I was so happy to find out I was not alone in my struggles. Most books just tell you what the symptoms are. This book tells you what it is really like from someone who lives with it.I recommend it for anyone that is bipolar or is close to someone with this illness. It will help you to understand somewhat of what they are dealing with and how you can help and support them.People without the illness are quick to dismiss it as real. ... Both Chelsea and Dr. Cohen are very knowledgeable and empathic individuals who have written a wonderful 'how to manual' for bipolar disorder. It is an excellent resource chock full of incredibly valuable information that everyone who is suffering from, or in any way dealing with, bipolar disorder must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - quick overview of the illness
I had been looking for a current book on BD and a book that was for someone on my end.My husband has be DX with DB since he was 18 and had a relaspe after we were just married. Before that he was in remission and I never saw his mood swings. This book is the perfect book to educate someone who does not have the illness and wants to learn more about it.

The book covers everything you would want to know about BD,I really liked the descriptions of the symptoms and the little story's from actually people. Most of the websites and organizations sited in the book I know about, but there were a few new ones for me to discover.

It was comforting to read that what my husband goes through daily is his illness and not him just being lazy or forgetful on purpose.I told my husband he should read the book after I am done, maybe he will learn a little more about his illness.

The book is an easy read, this is the first book on BD that I have finished. I could not stop reading this book, the only reason I did not finish it the first day, was I needed to go to work the next day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life!!!
This book changed my life!!! It opened my eyes to BPD and what I had been living with for almost 5 years with my wife. I always knew something was wrong, but never knew what. It didn't save my marriage, but nothing could have done that. It allowed me to get free with a clear conscience and know that I wasn't at fault, that it wasn't me that was broken and that had destroyed the marriage.

4-0 out of 5 stars i liked the book because it was insightful.
I have a much better understanding of BPD as well as the loved-one who has it.It helps you empathize because of the additional knowledge gained and be able to better understand where the BPD person is coming from.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
This book was amazing. It was exactly what I needed to hear about how to communicate with someone with BPD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop Walking on Eggshells

This is an incredibly well written book in easy to understand language. Everything in it is useful from understanding yourself to understanding the person that is inflicted with a behavioral disorder and causing the emotional abuse. If nothing else, this book will provide anyone that is a victim of emotional abuse some sence of direction and self worth, but it does provide so much more.Stop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps me understand
I married a BPD person and had two children, divorced after 24 yrs of marriage. After reading this book, it has opened my eyes to the person I was married to, his mother, and now my daughter. How people can operate without a conscience has been beyond my comprehension. Then to justify their behavior, they twist the truth and blame others. To readStop Walking on Eggshells: Taking Your Life Back When Someone You Care About Has Borderline Personality Disorder that this behavior is really a mental illness, even in high functioning persons, helps me understand what I must do to have a (hopefully) decent relationship with my daughter and keep my sanity.I recommend this book highly to anyone who is living with or has lived with someone who shows signs of borderline personality disorder. It is well written and advises non-BPD's how to take care of themselves. ... Product Description
Bipolar disorder, a brain disorder characterized by intense high and low moods, is a complex illness that is often difficult to identify. Each year, at least 2.3 million Americans suffer from its most severe form, while an estimated 10–13 million others suffer from milder forms. Yet, many go misdiagnosed or untreated. In Bipolar Disorder Demystified, author Lana Castle, who has lived most of her life with this illness, turns her personal experience into an enlightening and useful guide for all those traveling down the same path. In clear and compassionate language, Castle helps those who suffer from the illness as well as their friends and family understand the true nature of bipolar disorder, the factors that complicate its diagnosis, and the best ways to cope with it. Bipolar Disorder Demystified makes great strides in dispelling the mystery surrounding this illness, helping readers decide if it’s time to seek treatment and providing those with any form of mood disorder the information they need to better manage their lives. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great for bipolars and supporting friends & family
I really liked this book!It is very educational and really "hits the spot" knowing that someone else can express how I feel, think and act.Hurray for the author!

3-0 out of 5 stars I'm a little less mystified
Having sought help for her own mood disorders off and on since the 70s , Ms Castle is experienced firsthand with talk therapies, alternative cures, and medical approaches to her "brain illness."She believes mood disorders should have no more stigma than a more visible physical illness has, and to that end, she writes. She believes that interventions are critical, making the point repeatedly that lives are at stake. Her sister Barbara took her life in a depressive phase of her own mood disorder. The author also attempted suicide and writes very openly about the problem behaviors she practiced before her brain chemistry became more balanced through medications.
My criticism is that the author attempts to do too much, and in the process, becomes redundant with her suggestions and descriptions. If bipolar disorder is a brain illness, she fails to explain why talking therapy alone is sometimes help enough for such sufferers.Or, in another example she cites, belonging to an affirmational group like Toastmasters. And she does not acknowledge that the medical community is divided in this discussion of chemical imbalances in the brain.Since she acknowledges that parenting and personality both make their contributions to bipolar disorder, she has a bit more work to do in demystifying it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you'll ever need to know
I love this book. It really helped me with my bipolar disorder while I was in a bad place. I would recommend it to anyone. In fact I recommended it to my mother to read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Becoming demystified!
I bought the book for a friend who is a shut in.She has a grandson who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The book gave her the information she needed to understand the disorder and also directed her to solutions about specific issues affecting the family.

3-0 out of 5 stars Trite, But Not Without Merit.
Bipolar Disorder Demystified is the third book I've read on the subject of Bipolar Disorder. It's an easily read book covering everything from depression to hypomania, medication to the importance of vitamin consumption. The information in this book is expansive almost to the point of unnecessary. The chapter on Biochemistry and Genetics was informative. The chapter on Personality and the "Quadrants" of Perfectionism was senseless.

Lana Castle's attempt at intertwining her personal experience with scientific knowledge was charming in the beginning of the book, but trite towards the end when she tells of joining a Quaker church only to leave due to a persistent suitor, or the excerpts of her journal which read like the rantings of a lunatic.

From what I've read, I'm guessing that Castle is a little flaky.I'm glad that she's been able to find the stability she needs in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, but it's mentioned more often that the importance of psychotherapy and medication compliance. The chapter on Exploring Nonmedical Options began with substance, but ended disappointingly with the mention of using massage and aromatherapy as viable options for this disorder. She suggest communing with nature to relieve stress, but then recommends tasting "the sweat that pours from your face after an aerobic workout", for reasons unknown.

The chapter on Creativity is extremely self-absorbed.Once again, it begins with good intentions, but disappointingly segues into a timeline of Castle's attempts at creativity and pretty much reads like a resume of her creative endeavors or like a child screaming "Daddy, look at me! Look at me!"

Overall, Bipolar Disorder Demystified isn't a terrible book. It's full of a variety of important information on dealing with this disorder and the destruction it can cause. The unevenness in joining her personal encounters and scientific or substantial information (for lack of a better word) is not entirely the fault of Lana Castle. The blame should be placed on the editor for not reining in her clearly self-absorb writing style. (She figuratively thumbs her nose at a former psychiatrist for shooting down her ambitions for being a writer! See pages 301-302).

If you roll your eyes when you see a hippie, or laugh at the though of using penny-royale to cure a flu, then this book is not for you.If you are a hippie and have yerba mate in your refrigerator you'll find this book right up your alley.I consider myself ¼ hippie and found this book useful at times, disappointing but not entirely without merit. If you can stomach the ego of Castle, then read this book. When she's not too busy staring at her reflection in the mirror Castle can be a solid writer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Please Don't Let This Book Go Out of Print!
This groundbreaking book is the best and most helpful book I've ever read. For women with DID who are high functioning and thought they were the only ones, this book is a godsend. It puts all of the current research together with heartwarming stories, to show that people with multiple personalities can function whether or not the parts choose to integrate. I just logged on to buy two more copies, but discovered that today that, instead of paying $18.95 for another new book, I would have to pay at least $27.49 for a used copy, or $128.18 for a new copy. PLEASE, to you nice people at McGraw Hill Publishing, PLEASE reprint I am More Than One, by Jane Wegscheider Hyman, ASAP!Our therapists need to read this so that they can understand us!Our semi-suicidal friends with DID need to read this to know that there is hope, and that they are not alone! This book can and will save lives!

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Dr. Hyman
I am Reba, one of the women Dr. Hyman interviewed for this book.I just want to thank her for giving voice to me and to the other women in the book.Dr. Hyman shows that living with DID is not like the sensationalized movies seen on television. For the most part, those with DID work very hard to keep life "normal" and to keep other people from knowing about their "other parts" and their history.

I/we are working toward completely Joining Together, what therapists call "integration".We prefer the term "Joining Together", as that is what we are doing: becoming one, unified, a team working together as one, whole. As we join together, life is much more peaceful, joyful, and fulfilling.

I send to Dr. Hyman my greatest respect and appreciation.

To all who may read this book, I send my wishes for a peaceful, joyful life.

5-0 out of 5 stars i am more than one
i feel that this book is very informative for people and councillors, who are struggling with D.I.D. its an inspiration, clearly written and easy to understand, especially as the subject is complicated and for all of us who have D.I.D. its helpful to know we are not alone and that people are begining to understand D.I.D. and reconize it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Story of DID
This book tells of several real women who have DID.It doesn't have the extreme fiction stories. It shows that DID is very rarely like the movies Sybll or The 3 Faces of EVE.If you want to hear the truth this is what you get.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Breath Of Fresh Air
I found this to be an excellent book.It isn't extreme and doesn't attempt to sensationalize the topic. The story tells itself through the true life experiences of the women. This book offers a breath of fresh air to the subject of DID.The diagnosis is often misunderstood however this is written in such a way as to help most readers have a better understanding of what people with DID go through and how the mind is so wonderful in protecting itself and its host. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for personal library
Stahl has produced another terrific book that explains Bipolar and Depression in terms that non-clinicians can understand.

I bought this book based on my desire for relevant information on BP. I have found the images of neuronal/brain activity that accompany most topics in the book to be extremely helpful and germaine to a full comprehension. The major pharmaceuticals used to treat the disorders are explained in detail, as well as their mechanism of action.

I would recommend this book to people affected with BP and Depression that have a faily high reading level ability.

5-0 out of 5 stars A way to support family and friends
Having a close family member recently diagnosed with Panic Anxiety Disorder, I found the book extremely useful in both understanding the illness and knowing how to support this person. The author provides easy-to-understand details about the illness and solid ways of supporting loved-ones.Now, I feel like I can talk to my family member and no longer have to side-step the discussion.A must-read for anyone who has loved ones with this condition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Panic and Anxiety Disorder: 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Reso
Having personal experience with an anxiety disorder, I found Linda's book to have practical, reassuring information that I have been searching for for a long time. No one can really understand an anxiety disorder unless they have first-hand knowledge of it. The author speaks from her heart. Many of the mental-health professionals I have spoken to do not have this level of insight.

4-0 out of 5 stars A valuable resource
This book is a valuable addition to the others on the subject. Written in a direct and compassionate voice, it provides great insight and assistance to anyone connected to this disorder. I myself do not suffer from it; however, I'm close to a number of people who do. This book is a tremendous help to those of us who must learn to cope with a loved one who has a panic/anxiety disorder. And it provides an excellent tool to begin safely discussing the topic with that loved one. Lastly, I've had the privilege to meet the author on a couple occasions and talk about the issue -- she is truly knowledgeable, sensitive, and passionate about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, basic stuff that works.
I'd heard about Linda's upcoming tips book on Panic and Anxiety Disorder, but wasn't really interested in reading it, mainly because it was a "tips" book; I've seen those booklets in the check-out line, and always considered them vague and rather gimmicky. So, when I first picked up "Panic and Anxiety Disorder, 121 Tips, Real-life Advice, Resources & More", not only was I surprised by its book-like appearance, I was also drawn to its calm, down-to-earth approach to self-help.Yes, there are numbered tips, but as I read, I realized this wasn't implicitly for someone coping with anxiety disorders; Linda has written to everybody. Her tips, while pinpointing individual aspects of anxiety, actually address the very simple, basic, moment-by-moment steps to follow in order to successfully survive just about any stressful inner conflict. From digging in the earth to truly relearning the art of breathing, Linda's guidance is straightforward and simultaneously profound. Not leaving any stone unturned, Linda has dedicated an entire chapter to folks who've found themselves in the challenging role of support, and included numerous sources of additional literature and information.

Linda Manassee Buell has written this book with the compassion and personal landscape of someone who's lived in the cave of fear, and who's triumphantly emerged into the sunshine. ... Read more
