5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent pick for those who don't want to be defined by an event
Letting one's life be controlled by one traumatic event is no way to live. "Conquering Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: The Newest Techniques for Overcoming Symptoms, Regaining Hope, and Getting Your Life Back" is a guide for the afflicted in dealing with the anxieties related to such things so that they can get their life back on track. With much advice on improving one's mood, building supportive relationships, and getting over the event, "Conquering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder" is an excellent pick for those who don't want to be defined by an event.

5-0 out of 5 stars Conquering Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
This is an excellent book. Post Traumatic Stress can have many crippling effects on the way one socialized and lived. If you have been through one
or a series of violent events, or seen them. There are exercises to help you cope and either rid yourself of them or know how to deal with them if they have really gotten into your inner being, and can be tapped into a lifetime.
Even many troubling events we hear about (9/11) can get inside us. I feel
sorry for what our Iraq soldiers go through when they come home, and hope they get the awareness or techniques to help. This is best to work with
in conjunction with a therapist. Many are very aware of this problem and how to help you work through it...plus other techniques. Friends as support systems to are greatly helpful. Very very good activities that help!

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommended for everyone
Perceptive, insightful and well-written.I would recommend this book to
anyone who has any contact with PTSD issues. It should be obligatory to anyone who has experienced trauma on any level.Dr. Lemle Beckner is a gifted writer and original thinker.

Product Description
Exposure Treatments for Anxiety Disorders is a unique volume, as it draws together the latest research on the rapidly-expanding field of anxiety disorders and illuminates how to correctly apply the proven methodology of behavioral therapy techniques to the variety of situations that face today's mental health professional. That said, cognitive therapy has in the last 10 years gotten increased attention as an alternative to behavior therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. But while it is gaining acceptance among practitioners, cognitive therapy has yet to illustrate substantial benefits above those that behavior therapy can already provide. In light of the aforementioned, coupled with the pressure many practitioners feel from managed care paradigms and shrinking healthcare coverage, this book will be a welcome resource allowing for increased clarity of action, accountability, and ultimately, positive client outcome. Each chapter is designed to address pivotal aspects in the assessment, formulation and diagnosis, and treatment of anxiety disorders, to a sufficient depth that the generalist practitioner will be comfortable using this book as a guide when working with the anxiety disordered client. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars You can live with BiPolar Disorder
This book helped me to learn about the disorder and how to live with it and work with it.It is a practical book for sufferers of the disorder.Highly recommended.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not enough actual information
There are too many examples of individuals experiences and not actual information. I would recommend "Break the Bipolar Cycle" by Brondolo and Amador.

5-0 out of 5 stars Godsend for me and my family regarding my bipolar disorder
This book is an absolute must in any Bipolar library. Survival Guide is the what this book is about.Chapters are broken down in easy to understand sections. It's easy to follow based on your symptons. No scientific goblety gook.I have had bipolar my whole life, was diagnosed about 20 years ago and I literally wore out the pages on this book when it came out.

There are other great books concerning bipolar disorder. This should be your first!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must!
This book is a must for anyone with bipolar-I have purchased 29 bookson bipolar and this by far leads the way.It it written for the common layperson, not complicated or confusing. The information and suggestions provided are priceless to anyone with bipolar. You must add this to your list of things to do. 4-0 out of 5 stars Solutions for Mothers and others
After years of trying to find answers for behaviors that were beyond imagining, the diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder came as a relief for this mother.Wanting answers was just the beginning. Being part of the solution rather than the problem was my personal goal. This book was very helpful to me. Recommended by a career professional in mental health, it is easy to follow the research and the suggestions given, for the most part. The last STAR would have been there had it been not quite so clinical. Written for the patient, it helps to be in the skin of the patient for me, the book is low key, non confrontational and kind to the patient. Most important piece of information as a family member is to not lump the person with the condition. Easy to do when the patient is in an episode. Trying to learn the dance and the steps one can take to keep the dance from becoming deadly, has been huge. There ARE solutions. If you have this disorder or are the loving mother of one who has it, there are things you can do to arrest the severity of this disorder and their is HOPE for the patient. You are NOT your disease. You ARE loved, and you CAN get better, with clear tools described in this book.

Product Description

Bipolar disorder can be devastating. It can disrupt relationships and careers, it can wreak havoc on family life, and, when not properly treated, it can be fatal. Since 1999 this compassionate and comprehensive guide has helped tens of thousands of people cope with this complex disease. This, the second edition of Bipolar Disorder, is thoroughly updated and discusses promising new options for diagnosis and treatment along with new information on the disease's genetic components.

Bipolar disorder is difficult to diagnose. Dr. Mondimore explains how symptoms fluctuate in persons with seasonal affective disorder, how they can lead to a mistaken diagnosis of attention deficit--hyperactivity disorder in children, and how they may be made worse by alcohol or drug addiction.

The disease can also be difficult to treat. Dr. Mondimore gives advice about how to pick a psychiatrist and cope with the stigma of psychiatric diagnosis. He provides extensive information on treatment options, including the advantages, disadvantages, and side effects of various drug therapies.

He also describes what it is like to live with bipolar disorder and discusses how lifestyle changes can improve quality of life. Throughout, he focuses on the importance of building a support system, planning for emergencies, and giving yourself permission to seek help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on bipolar disorder out there
I found this book in a tiny library while I was on vacation.I could not put this book down.Usually professionals in the medical field have a way of writing that is accurate but laborious.I was amazed at the freshness and crispness of the language, it was much more like a conversation with a doctor than reading theory. The case studies really make this book go, they show you what a DSM never will, the nuances of illness.I enjoyed knowing that the material which birthed the book was countless hours of compassionate care given to people trying to survive this disease. It makes a great gift for family members and is even better for those who struggle with bipolar disorder. You will probably see yourself all over the pages and realize, that yes that doctor of your was right in his/her diagnosis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bipolar Disorder: A Guide for Patients and Families (2nd Edition)
excellent book, for the "educated layman".a great deal of valuable information, much that one also reads in technical psychiatry texts, but here it is extremely "read-able", in a very user-friendly format.a superb value. we ordered a second copy, to give to another person too.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst customer service I ever received!
My daughter is Autistic and since mental disorders are among the factors behing Autism my husband and I always look for material to better educate ourselves.I found another book that was not available and did not or did not remember ordering this book. When I needed to return the product I received very rude and insulting feedback from generationrecycle.I will not be ordering anything from generationrecycle in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommeded
This is the second time I've bought this book. After showing it to a friend, she wouldn't give it back! This is the perfect book for those who have bipolar disorder or who have a family member or friend with bipolar. It is very user friendly and it answered all my questions. I highly recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Professionally written for the layman
I have many years experience as a professional working with people with this disorder and it opened my eyes and gave me a better understanding and better compassion for those who are beginning their struggles to find balance in their lives with this sneaky disorder. This book was a thorough and well-written book. It has a therapeutic feel to it as if it is part of a therapy regimen. At times it gets too impersonal and a bit too clinical but the author tries to keep it understandable and effective for the everyday reader. I read this at the same time as "Loving Someone with Bipolar Disorder" and had to force myself back to this book time and time again because of it's more clinical feel whereas the other one gave insight into bipolar because one of the authors lives with this disorder. The books complimented one another because each gave a different but needed perspective to the overall disorder, personal accounts, and insight into treatments and obstacles. I would recommend it specifically because it is informative and professional. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for a Follow-Up Book
Paul Wider has done such a fine job with this book that he should soon write another. It has been an honor to participate in this project with him as an editor. Wider has provided such a gift to people who struggle and suffer with this disease. His wit and wisdom, as a fellow sufferer, carries a note that sounds thoroughly convincing thoughout this volume. The "Tools" section is especially rewarding. Anyone who cares about someone who deals with depressive illness should read this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Depression and manic Depression -P. Wider
I feel sympathetic toward this author because he is also bipolar and he wrote a book to help others with his best intentions and best resources... however, I found it to be almost childish in its lack of sophistication. I think a young teen or older child would be able to use the book to get started on the road to recovery with bipolar illness. For me, I read the whole book in about 20 minutes. It is full of lists, little drawings and charts and a very personalized and narrow perspective on tools and techniques to help oneself through the ups and downs of the illness. It's not a very good book. In fact, it really is poorly written and lacking in substance. Sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life-changing
This book completely changed my life!I've been in therapy and on medication for depression for about 20 years with no lasting success. It wasn't until I read this book that I realized that I was suffering from bipolar disorder, not simply depression. With the help of this book, therapy, and medication specifically for bipolar, I am a healthy, happy adult now and am so thankful for Dr. Wider.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not Good Enough
I bought this book hoping it would give me insight into why I was feeling depressed. But it didn't. It gave pratical advice and just wasn't good enough.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gaining a REAL Insight to some of your lifetime problems
My father saw an ad in a local newspaper that the author, Paul Wider, was speaking at a nearby Borders bookstore.I listened to his presentation and purchased his book.Having listened to him speak and as he lives nearby,I was able to see him regularly.

For those that can not see him,the book is an excellent restatement of his thoughts and helpful solutions to the entrenched problem of mild depression. Also, as I read the book, I would time and time again see myself.

It is possible that the reader may not be as devoted in his religion as is Mr. Wider. But that should be put aside by the reader as everything else in his work is compelling and worthy of deep thought as to how you might have some of the same issues.

The issue of depression is addressed in a very pragmatic, direct and practical manner.

Product Description
One of the best kept secrets in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders is the proven efficacy of a program of exercise, which has many benefits on mood, but has yet to be widely adopted as a therapeutic technique. This therapist guide provides guidance for care providers who want to apply exercise-based interventions to the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders.

The interventions described can be applied in a variety of settings ranging from primary care to specialty care in the context of psychological, psychiatric, nursing, or social work settings. Treatment is organized around a weekly prescribed activity program, with an emphasis on teaching patients strategies for staying motivated and organized in order to ensure adherence to the program. In addition to the actual exercise prescription, treatment is directed toward helping individuals get the most out of exercise by programming post-exercise cognitive processing and exercise-friendly activities.

Introductory chapters of this guide describe the intervention and how to initiate it with patients, while later chapters focus specifically on using exercise to combat depression, including bipolar disorder, as well as stress, worry, and panic. This manual provides an integrated approach to establish exercise programs targeting mood and anxiety disorders and also provides useful cognitive and behavioral interventions designed to support these programs. ... Howard Hughes had it. So did historical figures Martin Luther and Ignatius of Loyola. They all suffered from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)--as do over five million Americans who need to know that there is now hope and help. Ian Osborn, M.D., a specialist in OCD and a sufferer himself, has written the first comprehensive book on the experience, diagnosis, and treatment of OCD. 4-0 out of 5 stars OCD...
This book helped me to feel like I was not alone in the crazy exhaustion of OCD, but I'm still disappointed that no OCD book yet has touched on the true cause of OCD...'dirty electricity' in the environment (power lines, FM radio, radar, etc...) My OCD erupted early in 1986, and it worsened every year thereafter, right along with the growth of artificial electromagnetic radiation and radiowaves in the environment. It grew into a monster with a life of its own in the 1990's when cell phone and wifi towers and antennas began popping up on every corner and in every neighborhood, including my own, growing to such an extreme that I now live in clutter because my cleaning and ordering rituals are just way too involved and energy-draining anymore. I'm realizing now that my OCD involves short term memory problems, too, or more accurately, 'believing my memory' problems. Read the book if you have OCD. But make sure you look into the NON-thermal biological effects of chronic exposure to artificial electromagnetic radiation. Two-time Nobel prize nominee, Dr. Robert O. Becker's 'Cross Currents' and 'The Body Electric', and B. Blake Levitt's 'Cell Towers - Wireless Convenience? or Environmental Hazard?' are better choices, in my opinion, and will help you understand how EMF exposures may be triggering your OCD by affecting your brain.

OCD is just an exaggerated 'nesting' ritual triggered by man-made EMFs. Birds build nests. I wash my hands while scrubbing, cleaning, and ordering my house ('nest') until my skin is raw and my hands are bloodied...think about it...

5-0 out of 5 stars If you think you or someone you know might have OCD, I highly recommend this book.
If you are looking for a book on OCD that goes way above and beoynd to provide real-life stories of those suffering with OCD, this is the book for you.

For many years I was misdiagnosed and misinformed on the subject of OCD.Although I had many OCD symptoms, doctors attributed my symptoms to depression. This book gave me the information needed to get properly diagnosed and treated for OCD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Threatening Vulnerable Catholics with Damnation
This book is a classic educational tool for priests in confessionals and all RC teachers of religion that only HARM is done by portraying God as waiting like a Vulture to pounce on every Catholic with OCD and tell him/her that a single thought is enough to guarantee Everlasting Damnation to Hell. There is no God like that.

1-0 out of 5 stars No real solutions
This book focuses on symptoms and not solutions. If you want real solutions, buy Jonathan Grayson's book called "Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder." That is the best book on OCD I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book

5-0 out of 5 stars Great resource
Schiraldi took a complex issue and makes it easy to grasp in a well-organized format. It is useful for both the general reader who wants basic information and those who wish to do more in-depth reading.I was impressed with how the physiological concepts are explained, and wish I had read this book before taking introductory psychology courses.I have recommended it to people who have the diagnosis but also to anyone who has or knows someone with a mental illness of any type because much of the information is widely applicable, although what he writes about PTSD is invaluable.Overall I would highly recommend the book without reservation for anyone seeking information on mental illness and especially as a resource for PTSD, it should be a staple in the library of anyone studying the disorder.

After reading the first 90 pages or so, I finally feel validated that I am not totally losing my mind.I was concerned about that for awhile as stressor upon stressor was piled on my plate. The author did his homework and has fully documented his findings. Now I know that my reaction to the very abnormal is normal, I feel better already.I have a lot of work to do, but relief comes slowly and in small steps.I give this a definite, huge thumbs up and five-star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book
As a psychotherapist, I am always struck by the overwhelming complexity of PTSD and the layers of self-denial and avoidance reactions that often isolate a sufferer from the core emotional and sensory trauma. This book helps untangle the chaos of traumatic anxiety and gives us a better way to manage PTSD. I use mindfulness meditation therapy to work with trauma and find it to be most helpful. You might like to learn more about this approach, I also recommend 'The Path of Mindfulness Meditation' available through Amazon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second Edition: For the Clinician
Issued ten years ago, the first edition of Schiraldi's PTSD Sourcebook became (at least over time) the "industry standard" orientation text for new counselors and therapists in the VA Healthcare System. Then, as now, it was both comprehensive and easy to understand.

I wondered (in about 2000 or 2001) why it wasn't used as a complete "patient education" piece, but over time, I came to understand that the VA is =very= conservative about such matters. With good reason, at least in some respects: There was material in the first edition that was surely capable of triggering PTSD symptoms in readers who had not yet progressed far enough in therapy to defend against such triggering.

While not a substantial revision of the original, the second edition does add a number of simplified descriptions of therapeutic techniques as well as mentions here and there of newer efficacy research to support these and previously included methods. That said, the second edition continues to be the single best, mass-market text available for understanding PTSD's causes and conditions, as well as doing something meaningful about it.

With regard to the controversy over triggering, my suggestion is simply that while PTSD sufferers with denser, more primitive ego defenses (e.g.: dissociation, rage, nihilistic depressive orientation) require some work before tackling a book like this, most sufferers - and family members alike - will be hugely rewarded for diving in here. Schiraldi's book is "practical" and "hands-on," as opposed to "heavily neurobiological" or "interactionally theoretical."

This is not Bessel van der Kolk's (wonderful) =Traumatic Stress= or even Matthew Friedman's terrific little =Post-Traumatic and Acute Stress Disorders=. But, as a clinician, I found it (once again) to be a very effective re-orientation toward discussing PTSD and its component issues =with= those who are neither neuropsychologists or theory-soaked experts on interactional traumatization, let alone psychopharmacologists.

Schiraldi neatly distills the whole gamut of topics on nature and nurture, as well as stress and de-stress, into one- and two-syllable verbiage we can use to make sense of it all the same way the =patient= will have to make sense of it.

Do I have issues with the book? Of course. Shiraldi does tend towards the VAHS culture's view that one size fits all here and there. And some clinicians who have not themselves worked through their all-or-nothing orientations may get the idea that the author has covered all of the possible bases. He has not. But if he tried to do so, the book would be impossibly large, as well as needlessly difficult for lay readers.

That's a critique, however, that can be made of nearly any mass market book on such a complex subject. On the whole, this is a valuable and worthwhile read for clinicians and patients alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!What a great resource for PTSD sufferers.
I have been suffering with anxiety, depression and phobias for most of my life. After discovering through therapy that I suffer from PTSD due to growing up with an alcoholic father, I decided to purchase this book.I've been reading through it and it has been helping me learn a lot about PTSD and how to heal from it.
Chapters include:
the basics of PTSD, symptoms that include anxiety and dissociation
Healing, recovery and growth.
Preparing for the recovery process
Managing symptoms
Treatments (including memory work, therapy, hypnosis, healing rituals, resolving guilt, dream mgmt, etc)
The last few chapters are devoted to "moving on", becoming happy and spiritual as well as having a sense of purpose.
If you are a sufferer of PTSD and grew up in an alcoholic or dysfunctional home, I highly recommend this book. This book is great in conjunction with cognitive "talk" therapy with a professional, credible counselor.

Product Description
This is the first trade book to present the authors' research-proven method for helping people living with bipolar disorder gain control of their disorder. The Life Goals Program (LGP) was developed by two of the authors, Mark Bauer and Linda McBride, and has undergone two clinical trials, with more ongoing.

The LGP was designed to help the bipolar patient take charge of their disorder, rather than waiting passively for a health practitioner to stumble on the right treatment and tell the patient how to deal with the disorder. It includes a strong educational component, encouraging the person living with bipolar disorder to both learn about the disorder as well as explore their experiences with bipolar, including beliefs, first onset, triggers, cycles, feelings of stigma, effects of the disorder on social and spiritual aspects of life, and effective coping methods. Rather than creating a dichotomy where the person living with bipolar disorder is the passive patient and the health care provider (the author) is the expert, the LGP encourages the person living with bipolar disorder to become an expert on his or her disorder, and to take action in discovering what works and doesn't work in controlling the symptoms and coping with the effects of bipolar.

This workbook is arranged in modules, each one beginning with an educational component that explains the topic at hand and its relation to bipolar (for example, what happens physiologically when the person living with bipolar disorder becomes depressed, or how and why bipolar people often turn to street drugs and alcohol to cope). It then provides a step-by-step, accessible, thorough group of tools and/or exercises to help the reader explore the topic using their own experience.

Product Description
Based on the author's personal recovery experience, this book provides hope for patients who want to end months or years of suffering by following the right path. It is a perfect guide for the 20 million depression and bipolar disorder sufferers and the 100 million plus people who support them.

Why It Is Recommended That You Buy Two Or More Copies Of This Book

\227 To Share It With Your Doctor & Supporters \227

Owning two copies of this book is recommended because it is immensely effective in teaching your friends and family members how to help you beat your depression or bipolar disorder. I know how difficult it is to get people to understand your disorder. That is why I have written a special chapter specifically for your family and friends to read.

This special chapter will not only teach your family and friends how to help you, it will also inspire them to want to help you. Plus, since most people end up reading the whole book after reading this one chapter, they will gain a new understanding about what you are going through. One supporter recently wrote me to say that she bought eight copies after reading the book, because she knew how much it would help other family members to understand the disorder.

There is also a special chapter written specifically for your doctor (or therapist). I believe it is important for your doctor to know that you are serious about taking responsibility for your own treatment efforts. Giving them a copy of this book will not only send them this message, it will also show them how you prepare to beat your depression or bipolar disorder using the 3-step formula taught in this book. One of my readers told me she gave a copy to her doctor, and four days later her doctor had recommended the book to five other patients. I hope more doctors share such compassion for their patients. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars pretty basic
This is an educational book that provides the basic information of bipolar. It is very easy read. If you are knowledgeable of bipolar disorder, it isn't a book that you will gain much knowledge from.I wouldn't recommend it as their are numerous other books that cover this topic extensively.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is encouraging and gives you hope!
It's an easy read and the author helps you identify with another who is depressed. That helps you know you're not alone. I have purchased 2 other books for friends and gave my copy to someone to help them. I highly recommend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Will help some people
The author and I agree philosophically that moderate to severe depression or bipolar disorder is probably best treated with medication. However, the lack of solid information about psychotherapy in this book is something I don't agree with. And the quality of writing isn't that great, either.Nonetheless, the author has a somewhat unique approach to treating mental illness that is worth hearing.Avery Z. 5-0 out of 5 stars Win the Battle : The 3-Step Lifesaving Formula to Conquer De
This is a great book to read. It is very easy to understand. Once I started, I had to finish it that night. I lived with a person for 15 years that suffered from bi-polar-I wish I could have read this 15 years ago. I think the most important lesson that I got from this book is never give up trying. If you give up hope, then you have indeed lost. Bob Olson never gave up and now I hope others will benefit from his story. I highly recommend it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Power should try to edit something worthwhile
I had to use this book for a 400-level undergraduate psychology class. It is a collection of various authors with different writing styles, most of whom are too pretentious to consider that their readers are not glorified PhDs who have memorized every possible acronym.

My biggest complaint: every fourth word is followed by a citation, impossible to read! for every 3 pages of text there's a whole page of citations. While I appreciate the lack of plagiarism, 1/4 of the book is references. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Well-Written Book about Bipolar Disorder
The authors, both associated with the counseling center at the University of Virginia, have written a very complete, yet easy-to-read volume about biploar disorder. The book takes the reader from diagnosis to discussing the future that life holds for those with bipolar disorder.Additionally, there are chapters written about any topic a patient with BP would want to have answered.

Although this book's intended audience is for young adults and college students, I found the information in it was very helpful for me, too - and I'm 52!I enjoyed the way the authors used the language college students use, and I especially appreciated the case studies the authors use to illustrate the points they want to make. It's helpful to see how other people in the same situation have dealt with bipolar disorder.

If you are wondering if this book would help you understand bipolar disorder and assist you or a loved one face this diagnosis, I highly recommend that you order this book. You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing!
Hands down, the best resource I've found for young adults dealing with bipolar disorder.I am 24 and was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder a few years ago. While I have been through many of the initial shocks and have learned the hard way that I need to be on a schedule (many of the things Facing Bipolar addresses), this book provided me with a sense of relief I didn't have before. Before reading this book, I felt alone. I don't know anyone my age or even close to it that struggles with mental health to the same extent.I've read half a dozen books about being bipolar and this is the one that really hit home. Facing Bipolar is a much needed resource for young adults dealing with bipolar disorder for the first time.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book Around for Basic Information on Bipolar!
Facing Bipolar gives straightforward information on how Bipolar works, what to do to manage it and what to expect. It isn't full of technical medical study information, but rather information that anyone, whether a "Young Adult" or "Adult" can use.I think I have read them all, this was the best.In fact, I recommended it to a therapist friend who works with the local schools and they went out and got two copies for the special ed area to read themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource
I found this book to be incredibly helpful.I am a student with bipolar disorder and have read more works on the disorder than I can count. This one stands out in particular for its ability to connect on a young adult's level and provide a detailed guide to how best to stay healthy.I highly recommend this work for anyone facing bipolar disorder. ...
