Product Description
People who suffer from multiple chemical sensitivity (orMCS) develop severe allergic reactions to theirenvironments. Solvents, pesticides, fresh paint, new carpets, perfumes, and air fresheners are just a few of the substances that cantrigger an MCS attack. The condition is often hard to diagnose, andfrustrated patients are frequently shuttled from doctor todoctor. This survival guide is based on the latest MCS research-and onthe data that the author accumulated over five years researching theimpact of MCS on its victims. She reviews what is known about MCS andits symptoms and provides step-by-step advice for coping with thecondition, including taking steps to make your home safe, gettingprofessional help, and mobilizing the support of family and friends. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This is an excellent book.I highly recommend it.It is great for people who are new to the MCS/Chemical Sensitivity world. It also takes you allot further. There are so many things in this book that others do not cover. There is also a nice resource listing of where to buy special products just for the Chemically Sensitive individual, I found that very useful as well.I would say if your new to MCS then this is the book for you. It is the most comprehensive, straight forward easy to read version.I would start here and then move on to others by Bonnye L. Matthews Or William Rea.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books on MCS
My wife suffers from MCS. As such, I have read most of the books available concerning MCS. Most books are from a medical professional covering a particular medical theory or treatment plan for MCS. What makes this bookdifferent is that it really explains the impact of MCS on people's lives. It dispells the myths surrounding the various treatments. The book is basedupon surveys and interviews with hundreds of MCS patients. As such, theadvice is based upon their experiences. When discussing treatments, statistics are provided on how many people were helped, how many harmed, how many uncertain.

This books is great for those new to MCS, those whohave been around a long time, those who are patients, those who knowsomeone with MCS.

I would recommend this book be added to anyone'slibrary. This is not the only excellent book on MCS ... it is now simplythe first book I recommend that people read.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for those just learning about MCS
As someone who has been learning about MCS since 1994, I found this book to be an excellent overview of this frustrating, frightening and confusing malady. It is very easy to just open it and start reading at any point inthe book, without losing context of the overall message. The author isvery thorough in her scope, and presents her message in very easy tounderstand terms.

Of particular interest is the time the author spends onthe emotional aspect of this illness.Unlike other psychologists, Dr.Gibson does NOT try to imply that MCS is not a physical but rather apsychological illness.Instead she includes an entire chapter for patientsto share with their therapist, where she explains how MCS does NOT fit thesomatization model that mainstream psychology claims as the cause of MCSsymptoms. This is a refreshing approach from the psychology profession, asone of the biggest roadblocks that MCS patients must fight is the claimthat "its all in your head."

I highly recommend this book toanybody who has just recently been diagnosed with MCS, or suspects they mayhave an environmentally related illness.I also feel that it is anexcellent book for MCS patients to share with their families and friendswho are struggling to understand what is going on with their loved one. ... Product Description
This book is the first of its kind to directly connect the causes of autoimmune disorders, allergies, inflammatory diseases, and multiple chemical sensitivities with colon and digestive disorders. It offers safe, alternative, natural choices to drug therapy.

A personal note from Dr. Gilbère:

Dear Reader,
My book will assist you in natural non-drug solutions to heal and repair damage from prescription drugs, years of health depleting dietary choices, and chemically induced immune system disorders. It’s surprising how many symptoms stem from leaky gut and toxic liver syndromes. No, leaky gut is not a dinner table topic, but will soon become a household word. This increasingly common disorder is not well known in traditional medicine, rarely tested for, and much less understood. Leaky gut syndrome is the disease of the 21st century. The gut houses over half the body's immune and detoxification system, therefore, an unhealthy gut is what holds back many people from ever getting well. It doesn’t matter what your diagnostic label is, if your gut isn’t healthy, your body cannot repair. This syndrome will soon be as widely discussed and written about as colon cancer, menopause, prostate disorders and arthritis.
—Dr. Gloria Gilbère, June 1, 2000

Take charge of your health... get to the gut causes... read this book! "We have become a society that expects instant results instead of taking full responsibility for our health. Doctors and health-care professionals are physicians, not magicians. The information provided in this book will assist you in making informed decisions, because, after all, it’s you who must live with the consequences of your choices." ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A chilling documentary of the lives of people with MCS
This is a chilling documentary depicting the life of fifty people who are afflicted with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. MCS is a diseaese caused by our chemical society, where people become 'allergic' to everyday chemicals, such as fragrances, gasoline, plastics and conventional houses. The bookgives us a short glimpse of how people with this disease live their lives, how they cope, and have arrived at this situation. Each of the fiftyportraits are accompanied by an artful photograph, that carries the bookand tells more than words. If you like picture books showing othercultures, this may be of interest to you. The pictures are not just showingthe people, but also their special living arrangements, ranging from a tentin the desert, to regular houses, and other unique arrangements, like theguy who must air out his newspaper before he can read it. The aim of theauthor is clearly to display this growing problem to a larger audience, ina form that makes it comprehensible to 'normal' people. ... Read more

The author of The Invisible Invaders discusses the causes and controversies surrounding Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS), some form of which affects more than 2.5 million Americans, examining the history and spread of this new disease. 35,000 first printing. Tour."Amazon.com Review
Here's how physician Gerald Ross of the Environmental HealthCenter in Dallas describes multiple chemical sensitivity, or MCS:"Think of a patient as a rain barrel. The water in the barrel isthe total load of environmental pollutants that the body must copewith. Then along comes some other source of stress. But the barrelcan't hold it, and it pours out. The overflow represents a healthproblem ... and you get sick." The consequences of the sicknessare severe; lives are radically and sometimes permanentlydisrupted. And the solutions to 20th-century allergies are painstakingand expensive. Worse, some physicians and psychiatrists say that MCSis all in people's heads, and that these people are being abetted byoverzealous scientists who ignore basic scientific principles. Youdon't have to agree with one side or the other to find the assertionsin Allergic to the Twentieth Century compelling, though; infact, it may go down better if you start it without any preconceivednotions. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Emotional, but not factual
I have read several books about MCS and EI.This book if full of emotional ramblings rather than solid facts. If you are doing research, I would not consider this a good source. If you are looking for someone to feel your pain and share your anger at environmental illness, this book may comfort you.Understand that some of the things he says are not 100% true.If you want more factual information, try Dr. Doris Rapp or Dr. Sherry Rogers.Their books have citations linked to actual studies and court cases as well as helpful information on how to heal yourself.

5-0 out of 5 stars good read for a concerned layperson
5 stars because I couldn't think of an improvement I'd want to make. It's well-written for the understanding of non-health-professionals (I'm one) and seemed like a very comprehensive (for the time, given that recognition of MCS is in its infancy) overview of what appears to be the tip of an iceberg. Rationally, I believe that multiple chemical sensitivity is real, but I don't personally know anyone who is involved, so I have no basis for bias. This book quoted several individuals who have symptoms of multiple chemical sensitivity, and their accounts of the desperate measures they must take to not feel rotten really opened my eyes to the possible future for the rest of us.

The doctors who were interviewed and quoted don't all agree on every aspect of the syndrome, which makes their opinions seem more authentic. Some of them have outright antipathy, not just disagreement, over specific points regarding MCS; however, it seemed to me that they all agree that the specialty of allergies (and MCS) is inexact, almost as much art as science. Some of the avant-garde treatments I read about seem fairly dubious, but the results are apparently well-documented. Although relatively few scientific studies have been done, they seemed appropriate and meaningful to me.

This book is neither anti-industry nor "chicken little" in tone, but it certainly added fuel to my back-to-basics, organic-gardening, anti-industry fire. The facts (some statistics) and opinions (from informed health professionals) presented herein constitute a firm, but rational, warning that we may have opened a chemical Pandora's box when we jumped on the industrial bandwagon. The rising incidence of many chronic diseases (cancer, asthma, ulcers, you name it) may be due only to the fact that those people didn't get felled first by typhoid, malaria, or saber-toothed tigers, but I'm still concerned, and I don't think the coincidence of higher cancer rates and widespread use of industrial chemicals is due to chance. This book doesn't spend many pages addressing solutions; it is aimed at illuminating the source of the problem.I'd recommend it, without reservation, to other laypersons who want to expand their understanding, especially to school kids doing research on industrial chemicals or allergies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Reading for These Times
It's a shame this indispensable book has gone out of print because it is one of the best I have read on the subject.Environmental allergies, Sick Building Syndrome, Gulf War Syndrome, or Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is the subject at hand, and I think it one of the most important subjects of our time.MCS, despite some doctor's insistence that it does not exist, affects every living thing on Earth. An estimated 40 million Americans already show clear and obvious signs of this illness. The rest of us are undoubtedly affected in less obvious ways.We cannot afford to ignore this problem.

One of the most fascinating parts of this book, which has stuck in my memory for a number of years, is descriptions and interviews with the sickest people alive with MCS.The descriptions of their symptoms and the great lengths they must go to just to try to live their lives is tragic and fascinating and a warning to us all.

Even though you may not know how chemical poisoning is affecting you, it almost certainly is.Sticking our collective heads in the sand will not help us, and will almost certainly allow things to get much worse before they get better.Inform yourself and read this book.

Peter Radetsky has experience writing popular science books, and this one is very readable. He interviews a variety of sick people, scientists, doctors, and psychiatrists with a wide range of opinions on the subject.Though the role of infectious pathogens is fairly well understood these days, the role of toxicity has been almost completely ignored by modern science and allopathic medicine. This topic must blow open, sooner or later. In the meantime, we can inform ourselves and take a tip from the sickest among us.We do not need to wait for mainstream science and medicine to acknowledge or solve problems before we act to protect our own health.

It is too bad this book has apparently not gone to paperback because the subject is so important, and this is such a well-done job on the topic. For little more than the price of postage, you can inform yourself on a topic of great importance that we have only begun to scratch the surface of.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting, highly readable!
I'm an allergy researcher and when I came on this excellent book, I sat down and read it cover to cover. Couldn't put it down. The writer is very good, the information new and interesting, and thought provoking. "Sick Building Syndrome" is quite real and affects many people on a daily basis. I am sad to see that this fine piece of work is out of print. If you can find a copy, I highly recommend it. Tom Ogren, author of Allergy-Free Gardening :::: from Ten Speed Press

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
As someone who has to deal with someone who insists that they have MCS, I found the information quite illuminating. It is truly an interesting book which will make you think of their lives have changed. It really gives a humanizing outlook of someone who has to live in a world where everyone thinks you are crazy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Tells it like it is.
Most of my friends (?) and relatives really don't believe there is such a thing as MULTI-CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY. I would love to send each of themone of these books but can't afford it!
Other than it's cost, it's the best book of it's type that I've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stories of Encouragement of those living with MCS
Inspiring personal stories of individuals successfully coping with life in a world that until recently was largely unaware of the growing problem of multiple chemical sensitivities or chemical injury from everyday "modern" chemicals, fragrances, cleaning agents, et cetera. This book is educational and enlightening, not only for the loved ones ofMCSers but also for the innumerable individuals developing MCS yet up till now have been at a loss as to why their health is of poorer quality and continues to decline, who have been from one physician to another with no answers, or written off with a psychiatric or "it's all in your head" condition. This well-written book offers strategies from differing viewpoints for creating a world free from the isolation of MCS. The concise forward by the author and Professor Pamela Reed Gibson are both descriptive and highly educational. This book is written for those with loved ones with MCS, those who suspect they themselves may be afflicted by unexplainable symptoms that do not fade away, and for the public at large who wish to protect their own health while still unaffiliated. Presented with hope and reconciliation rather than anger, it is an excellent "first" and "must read" book on the realities of living in our modern "chemical age". ... Read more

Product Description
Discover the answer to the mysteries of these debilitating illnesses

Explaining “Unexplained Illnesses” provides long-sought explanations for the properties of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), fibromyalgia, and posttraumatic stress disorder. This groundbreaking book examines common symptoms and signs; short-term stressors such as infection, chemical exposure, physical trauma, and severe psychological stress; why people are often diagnosed as having more than one of these illnesses, and approaches for treating the cause of each disease, rather than the symptoms. The book presents a detailed and well-supported mechanism (the NO/ONOO- cycle) that provides consistent explanations for many of the puzzling elements of these diseases.

At least a dozen scientists have proposed that chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple chemical sensitivity, and fibromyalgia must share a common mechanism; others have suggested posttraumatic stress disorder may belong to this group as well. This unique book provides explanations for their previously unexplained properties with more than 1,500 references to scientific literature, creating a whole new approach to therapy and treatment of these illnesses.

Explaining "Unexplained Illnesses" provides answers to these questions:

  • how do short-term stressors initiate chronic illness?
  • how does the biochemistry of the NO/ONOO- cycle produce chronic illness?
  • how can the diverse symptoms and signs of these illnesses be generated as a consequence of their common biochemistry?
  • why is there so much variation in symptoms from one sufferer to another?
  • what are the principles underlying the NO/ONOO- cycle mechanism?
  • how does the NO/ONOO- cycle provide explanations for a dozen previously unexplained properties of these illnesses?
  • how might 14 additional illnesses/diseases also be caused by the NO/ONOO- cycle etiology?
  • and many more
Explaining “Unexplained Illnesses” is a must-read for physicians and scientists, and for anyone who suffers from-or knows someone who suffers from—these previously puzzling illnesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars A new paradigm for chronic illness
Explaining Unexplained Illnesses
Disease Paradigm for:Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Multiple Chemical Sensitivity, Fibromyalgia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Gulf War Syndrome, and Others
By Martin Pall, PhD (Informa Health Care 2009)

By Jackie Steincamp, New Zealand

Dr Pall opens our eyes to the altered biochemistry in chronic disease.A marvellous argument - but awarning, this book is not for the fainthearted, woolly-headed or medically and scientifically ignorant!
Hel presents the NO/ONOO (pronounced, aptly, "No, oh no!) cycle as the causal mechanism for CFS, FM, MCS, PTSD and related illnesses.Nitric oxide (NO) itself has many useful functions in the body, but if its levels are too high, its oxidant by-product, peroxynitrite (ONOO) propagates itself and creates a chronic vicious cycle. He argues that therapies should focus on down-regulating the NO/ONOO cycle and presents many modalities collected from various researchers and clinicians. He quotes extensively from such CFS medical heroes as Drs Paul Cheney, David Bell, Jacob Teitelbaum, Grace Ziem, and Garth Nicolson.
Dr Pall has written and researched M.E./CFS illnesses for many years. He is Professor of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University. His long term interests in the body's regulatory systems and free radicals. Among his many distinguished activities, he is on the editorial board of the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (Haworth).
He shows that NO/ONOO damage can be quite local within the body, impacting on one tissue, but not necessarily another.Different people suffering from these illnesses thus can have an infinite variety of symptoms and signs produced by this variation in tissue distribution.Increased inflammatory processes are also engendered by high levels of peroxynitrite and may be quite localized.
He draws from world wide research to argue that whatever type of "unexplained illness" is concerned, that genetic susceptibility leading to hormonal abnormalities arekey factors."No! Oh no!" is not the basic problem. The individual's genetics and hormonal balance are the determining factors.
Lengthy explanations of why agents such as glutathione, selenium, flavonoids, magnesium, carnosine and carnitine (and many others) show why they help down-regulate the ONOO cycle.Summaries oftreatment protocols (all heavily anti-oxidant) from four leading M.E./CFS specialists illustrate how they may be used in treatment. .
Dr Pall provides a remarkable argument on what is surely a central thesis of chronic unexplained and fatiguing illnesses:namely that oxidative stress mechanisms point the way to any therapeutic approach. There is a wealth of information in this book, much of it quite technical, but understandable for any informed and determined reader.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good in parts but misleading about ME and 'CFS'
It is important to note that Pall should not be considered a M.E. expert and that when he refers to `CFS' this information should not be assumed to apply in whole or in part to M.E.

Some of what he is saying generally may possibly be relevant to M.E. patients to some extent (as regards treatment, rather than symptomatology or aetiology, as it does with multiple sclerosis for example), but this is as yet unclear due to the fact he unfortunately makes no distinction between fatigue and `CFS' and the distinct neurological disease M.E.

M.E. is NOT at all a medically unexplained illness, and has little in common with the conditions Pall claims `share many symptoms and often occur together' such as PTSD and MCS and Fibromyalgia - unlike `CFS.' As Pall claims, `CFS' (or rather, those illnesses which are misdiagnosed as `CFS') can be caused by many different things including bacterial infections, psychological stress and physical trauma but this makes it very clear that when Pall refers to `CFS' he is not referring to genuine M.E.

Anyone who describes an illness that is based on fatigue, is medically unexplained, has symptoms similar to Fibromyalgia or PTSD etc., and that can be caused by many different things such as trauma, physical and emotional stress and bacterial infection and common virus infections such as EBV or herpes etc., IS NOT REFERRING TO M.E. and is not knowledgeable about even the most basic facts of M.E.

The research is very clear that M.E. is not (and cannot) be caused by stress, trauma or bacterial infections and so on. M.E. is caused by a virus, an enterovirus and is primarily a testable and measurable neurological disease with many distinct features and unique symptoms.

Please, if you have a 'CFS' (mis)diagnosis, do everything you can to find your correct diagnosis, do not accept 'CFS' ever as an end point to the process of diagnosis. This theory may have some merit as regards M.E., some of it fits, but this information is inaccurate with many basic facts about M.E. so please go elsewhere for that info!

As well as some thought about collaterals, such as the difficulty to diagnose, the ignorance and skepticism of most people including, sadly, medical profession. And some number on how wide spread (and ignored) they are.
There is a wealth of reference at the end of the book (about 120 pages of them!)

Also you'll find also conjectures on numerous other disease, such as Asthma, Allergy, Lupus.

It was a great read. Although, not being a MD or biologist myself, some passage were a bit difficult and I just browsed over them.

5-0 out of 5 stars beacon of hope
Dr. Pall's book explains what I want ever doctor and family member or friend to finally understand. MCS is a real, and tragic, illness that results from the casual attitude we have with chemicals in our environment and this is what is happening. The book is an excellent text for the average person, and those with a non-scientific mind, as Dr. Pall teaches a basic science class on the NO/ONOO process responsible for the illnesses which many of us have had to live with for years. As I read the book I felt hope for all who suffer from one of these. More important still is the treatment formula that Dr. Pall, Dr. Grace Ziem and Jim Seymour have introduced. This treatment has changed my life. I highly recommend this book; buy several and gift them to every doctor you know...It's that important.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book all doctors should read and all with chemical injury
I read this book which I now plan to give to my Dr. so he can read it also.I suffer from this illness and really appreciate this book altho some of it was above my head.I learned lots from what I was able to read and understand.I recommend it for all who are suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and chemical injury and also for ALL doctors. ... Excerpt: Radon (pronounced , ) is a radioactive, colorless, odorless, tasteless noble gas, occurring naturally as the decay product of radium. It is one of the densest substances that remains a gas under normal conditions and is considered to be a health hazard due to its radioactivity. Its most stable isotope, Rn, has a half-life of 3.8 days. Due to its high radioactivity, it has been less well-studied by chemists, but a few compounds are known. Radon is formed as part of the normal radioactive decay chain of uranium. Uranium has been around since the earth was formed and its most common isotope has a very long half-life (4.5 billion years), which is the amount of time required for one-half of uranium to break down. Uranium, radium, and thus radon, will continue to occur for millions of years at about the same concentrations as they do now. Radon is responsible for the majority of the mean public exposure to ionizing radiation. It is often the single largest contributor to an individual's background radiation dose, and is the most variable from location to location. Radon gas from natural sources can accumulate in buildings, especially in confined areas such...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=25533720 ... Read more

From the supplier: Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), a physical reaction to common chemicals such as those in detergents, perfumes, foods or new money, has increased in reportage during the last 50 years. The symptoms can be crippling and more often than not MCS is not taken seriously and patients are told they are imagining their disease or are crazy. Many cannot tolerate the chemicals used in home construction and must live outdoors. The cost of organic food, vitamin supplements, medications, cotton bedding, air purifiers and special vacuum cleaners is expensive, as is being homeless as many of them are.

From the author: Multiple-chemical sensitivity (MCS) is a condition in which individuals have an acute hypersensitivity to low levels of chemicals found in everyday substances, such as household cleaning agents, pesticides, fresh paint, new carpeting, synthetic building materials, newsprint, perfume, and numerous other petrochemical products. This condition continues to remain somewhat of a mystery to the medical community, and its true prevalence rate is unknown because many cases are not identified and reported as MCS. This article will inform the reader about the condition of MCS.
