Description:
Multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) is defined as a syndrome with multiple medically unexplained symptoms attributed to low levels of chemically unrelated substances in the environment. The etiology of this syndrome is still unclear. As MCS may be conceptualized as an atypical type of somatoform disorder, the purpose of the study was to examine whether MCS subjects show symptom patterns, personality traits, and perceptual and cognitive styles as typically found in somatoform patients. Nonsensitive controls (n=36) were compared to subjects with moderate (n=35) and high (n=35) MCS intensity with self-report psychological questionnaires and structured interviews for depression and somatoform disorders. The high MCS group scored significantly higher than the other two groups on self-report scales for somatoform symptoms and depression. Moreover, high MCS was strongly associated with the diagnosis of somatoform disorder, and weaker but still significantly with depression. In a stepwise multiple regression analysis, cognitions about environmental threat, trait anxiety, focus on autonomic sensations, and general environmental sensitivity predicted MCS symptoms in the total sample, explaining 53% of the variance. These results support the hypothesis that trait negativity and mechanisms of symptom perception and symptom amplification contribute to the enhanced symptom reports of MCS individuals. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Prevention rather than cure
I found this booklet very interesting since I do believe that we should concentrate more on causes of diseases and with the acquired knowledge be able to prevent them.

5-0 out of 5 stars opened my eyes
My doctor recommended this book and others by Sherry Rogers.I have been in treatment for metal toxicity (i.v. chelation therapy) and it has entirely changed my health.I had become hyper sensitive to everything!I was even beginning to wonder if it was all in head (that's that a lot of doctors will tell you when they don't know), because day by day another set up symptoms would show up.Since I have lowered my toxin levels, even my seasonal allergies have cleared up!I suffered for many, many years. This book makes the issues clear and should help anyone suffering with health problems and who is looking for answers.Detox, detox, detox. It works!

5-0 out of 5 stars superior book
I am a breast cancer survivor and find myself extremely sensitive to fragrances, laundry products, cleaning products, etc.I have ready many things trying to figure out WHYthis happens to me, and what to do. This book explains both. This MD had it herself and treats it. In addition, it gets down to a cellular analysis on why it takes place and what you can do about it.Lots of references. Superior book...a MUSTHAVE!

2-0 out of 5 stars Review of Chemical Sensitivity
I think the few pages that this pamphlet contain are grossly over priced.Tbe merchandise was delivered in a timely manner, but I was disappointed in regard to the merchandise.

Product Description

The clinical approaches to the chronic degenerative diseases that drain our resources, and compromise our well-being, have become almost exclusively symptom-focused. The common wisdom is that they are idiopathic with final outcomes to be managed rather than prevented or cured. That they are potentially reversible rarely enters into any discussion between doctor and patient.

A Homeostatic approach to Cure and Prevention for Researchers and Clinicians Working in Toxicology, Immunology, Neurology, and Internal Medicine

Reversibility of Chronic Degenerative Disease and Hypersensitivity, a four-part encyclopedia, offers a much different perspective on chronic degenerative disease, one that disputes the idiopathic label attached to most, as well as the usual fatalistic prognosis. The first volume, Regulating Mechanisms of Chemical Sensitivity, demonstrates that one aspect common to chronic diseases is the disruption of systemic and cellular homeostasis. Environmental pollutants play a large role, along with the contributions of genetic and life style factors, in disrupting the self-regulating mechanisms built into our normally adaptive cells.

"As dyshomeostasis develops in the nervous system, causes should be found and removed before the metabolicinduced tissue changes take place and cause autonomous, irreversible fixednamed diseases to occur. …Single and multiple chemicals in various doses either individually and/or in combinations can cause individual or multiorgan dysfunction of the endocrine system. The astute clinician must be aware of these factors in order to help the patient with hypersensitivity and/or chronic degenerative disease." Chapter 2

Drawing on a vast amount of data and clinical cases attended to by the authors in their own medical practices, this volume examines the complex relation that environmental pollution has with chronic degenerative diseases. It considers its impact on the body’s vast communication networks and what excessive overload does to homeostatic mechanisms.

The authors factor in both general and specific environmental loads and how they alter and trigger genetic and non-genetic responses. Volume 1 begins with an overview of the physiologic basis of homeostasis, exploring various ways that the body deals with toxins and the networks it uses to communicate news of assault and makes provisions for adaptation. The text delves into the connective tissue matrix and considers vascular, neural, endocrine, and immune system responses to a variety of noxious assaults.

"Both innate and acquired immunity can be and are altered in individuals with chemical sensitivity and chronic degenerative disease. …With pollutant overload changes can occur in the lymphatic channels, the lymph nodes, and lymph node egress as well as the lymphatic cells. Changes in mucosal function and the effects of the autonomic nervous system are evident with environmental pollutant overload." Chapter 3

Written by two very knowledgeable clinicians, it brings together research of the highest caliber and provides extensive discussions involving sophisticated biochemical, endocrine, and neural science. The text provides clinicians with the knowledge to understand the triggering and processes of degenerative diseases, so that they might develop more efficient treatment and prevention plans. The book also supplies the knowledge and perspective that can lead research to more effective treatments.

"The ground regulation system consisting of the connective tissue matrix, fibroblast, macrophages, mast cell, leukocyte, end capillary vessel and autonomic nerves, is a global information system for regulating the dynamics of homeostasis in the body. …One’s knowledge of this process must be the guide to move through the onset of early end-stage disease and, eventually, see the manifestations to fixed-named autonomous diseases. It is this knowledge that offers us the greatest potential … for preventing and reversing early homeostatic dysfunction." Chapter 1

1-0 out of 5 stars Of course this book is junk "science"
REading this book lets me know that anyone can now publish a book, and say anything they want to. Pathetic. These authors are not even scientists, and unemployed psychiatrists. Take it off of Amazon.
Warning - also stay away from Stephen Barrett's website. It is ridiculous. He writes in a very clever manner, but you have to keep reading to figure out that he is a fraud. There is lots of suspicion that these authors are being paid by the chemical/consumer product industries.

1-0 out of 5 stars An offense to the principles of science
I read this book with a truly open mind, wondering whether the illness I've been suffering from for many years may have a psychological explanation. I guess I would say it was helpful in that it clearly demonstrated how unscientific the psychogenic theory of MCS is. It was also, frankly, a little disturbing to read.

For example, Barrett and Gots, either by way of deliberation, ignorance, or foolishness, make no mention of a single epidemiological study that has shown a possible physical origin for chemical sensitivity. Their main weapon of defense for their limp theory that chemical sensitivity is attributable, more or less, to general wackiness, are anecdotes. At one point, Barrett refers to a STORY HE HEARD FROM ANOTHER DOCTOR about that doctor's impression of HIS MCS patient's personality. Wow, that's really, scientific. At another point, Barrett points out the always popular perception--that any idiot would make--that MCS sufferers are often depressed. This is, in fact, one of the few points in the book where he backs his statements up with data, but, and this is critical, HE NEVER ONCE MENTIONS THAT THE POSITIVE CORRELATION BETWEEN DEPRESSION AND MCS MIGHT BE DUE TO THE DISEASE CAUSING THE DEPRESSION, rather than the depression being a lazy, generic, catch-all explanation for a complex disease. The fact that he doesn't even mention that as a possibility (as the WHO, the AMA, and every other responsible body does) demonstrates his bias and reluctance to fully apply the scientific method. He then goes on to share another anecdote with us about a 53 year old man who took some anti-depressants and saw improvement. Wow, I'm convinced.

To be fair, Barrett does accurately enumerate many of the problems that EI and its ilk have run into when subjected to scientific study. There are problems, no doubt; there is no demonstrable, reproducible theory that explains it from a physiological perspective. However, there are just as many problems with the psychogenic theory as well, and Barrett's outright dismissal of these problems illustrates a professional bias that disgraces the tenets of sound science he so fervently claims to cherish.

1-0 out of 5 stars Gots is a FRAUD!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. Gots is a Fraud!!He was exposed on dateline. He works for insurance companies and the chemical industry he will say and write anything for money!!!!!He has no formal training or experience in toxicology nor has he seen or treated a patient in 30 years. This man has done a lot of damage all for his personal gain.

1-0 out of 5 stars Huge Disappointment!
Based on what I now know about MCS, I have probably had MCS for 20 years. I have known I have MCS for about a year and a half. When I first realized what my problem was, I did some research on the internet, and adjusted what I was doing. The changes helped, but not a lot. I got by . . .

But, it wasn't until recently that I got REALLY sick from it. That is when I started buying books about MCS, and have been like a sponge, trying to learn what I can do, to again have any quality of life. When I saw this book, I read the editorial review, but didn't go on to look at reader reviews. Maybe on that particular day, I was suffering from fatigue and brain fog.

When the book arrived, I was anxious to dive right in, to learn more about MCS.WOW, was I disappointed, when I realized that the authors, spent the entire book doing their best to prove that MCS was more psychosomatic, than it was a physical ailment.

After skimming through the book, I decided that my limited energy needs to be devoted to learning about how to get well, not into learning that my illness is all in my head.

Before writing this, I did take a look at the reader reviews, especially the ones that gave the book five stars. It is obvious that these five people do not know what it is to suffer from this debilitating illness, and have bought into the propaganda, of these two authors.

If you suffer from MCS and are looking for information, to help you recover, DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK! It would be a waste of your money and time! There are other books out there, that would serve you better, in your quest for knowledge, about how to conquer MCS.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very unfair treatment of a serious illness
As many reviewers have already said, this book is extremely unhelpful to those who suffer from chemical injuries or EI. I am personally familiar with several of these, and know from personal experience the frustration and suffering this can cause. To argue that this is a psychogenic illness just makes it more frustrating to those who need real research and medical solutions. This book attempts to stand in the way of progress, and hopefully most people will not buy its bogus arguments. Please see, for example, Pamela Gibson's Multiple Chemical Sensititives: A Survivor's Guide, for summaries of some of the reserach. The Baylor College of Medicine also has a nice discussion of the illness on its website, with suggestions for support workers. I can't believe the Barrett-Gots book is even still in print. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars I didn't read this book, so take it for what it is...
I am really writing about my experience with NAET and Bioset, something similar. I have chemical sensitivities and I tried both with NO success, only a big empty hole in my bank account. I was told I had to clear all these other things before getting to the perfume, when the treatment didn't work I was told I had to go back and clear some of the stuff that had already been cleared. In a nutshell, I spent a small fortune and am still allergic to all the stuff I was supposedly cleared for. This does work for some and we are not all the same, but my advice is to try EFT and TAT, both of which offer their basic protocols for FREE and work through it yourself.

You may get info about NAET in this book but you can not do the protocol by yourself, so if you want to try it read about it on the net and save a nickel...you'll need it if you want to try it.

Stay away from anyone or anything that wants your wallet before helping you. Everyone has a right to make a living, and recoup their expenses getting info out there, but those who carefully guard their "secrets" and want to sell you an e-book or seminar or something without offering you ANY substantial help or demonstration of efficacy, I would avoid. We can all be quite desperate at times with this thing. Like many of us I have done lots of things, lots and lots of things. Keep your wallet in your purse, until you know something works. I truly believe that anyone who has suffered with this or understands its impact on someone's life would not withhold the cure for ANY reason. I personally would actually be willing to spend my own money to get it out there, but that's me.

Gary Craig and Tapas Flemming I think still make plenty of money on their dvd's and seminars and certifications while giving people their system for free. I have purchased DVDs from both Tapas and Gary after receiving much needed free help. I admire and thank them and they have set the standards for what I look for in a healing system and the integrity of it's creator/promoter.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not much more
I thought I would get more information on multiple chemical sensitivities.Evidently, it would take years to complete all of the treatments, assuming you have a good practitioner. This means that only the rich would be able to be treated. No secrets revealed, just a sell on NAET practitioners. ... Product Description
Chemical Exposures: Low Levels and High Stakes explains how day-to-day variations in chemical exposure may cause unusual and seemingly unpredictable symptoms, including many that have been termed psychosomatic in the past. It describes how everyday, low-level chemical exposures may cause fatigue, memory impairment, headaches, mood changes, breathing difficulties, digestive problems, and a host of chronic unexplained illnesses including chronic fatigue syndrome, Gulf War syndrome, and sick building syndrome. The authors are the first writers to clearly describe and document the process of adaptation, a concept that provides a rational and scientific basis for understanding these symptoms. In the Second Edition of this professionally acclaimed work, the authors offer evidence for an emerging new theory of disease-toxicant-induced loss of tolerance-which may have far-reaching implications for medicine, public health, and environmental policy. Based on a report commissioned by the New Jersey Department of Health that won the World Health Organization's Macedo Award, Chemical Exposures is the most comprehensive book ever written on sensitivity to low level chemical exposure and the many health effects associated with it. This work clarifies the nature of chemical sensitivity, shows how it differs from traditional allergies and toxicity, and suggests how federal and state governments can help those who are affected. The book identifies four major groups of people with hypersensitivity to low levels of chemicals: occupants of tight buildings, industrial workers who handle chemicals, residents of communities exposed to toxic chemicals, and individuals with random and unique exposures to various chemicals. The fact that similar symptoms are being reported by members of these demographically diverse groups not only points to a serious problem, it may also contribute to a better understanding of chemical sensitivity. Included are a number of features that will be invaluable to health professionals: * Clear, concise explanations of technical material * The most extensive bibliography to date on the subject * Tables contrasting different medical approaches * Descriptions of recent research and proposed mechanisms * An annotated bibliographical appendix highlighting illnesses that have been linked to environmental exposures * Policy recommendations for federal and state governments "Clinicians and policymakers would do well to read and heed the advice of this book."-Journal of the American Medical Association "Clinicians, researchers, and policymakers in this field would be well advised to read this landmark book."-American Public Health Association Newsletter "A milestone in the evolution of multiple chemical sensitivity."-Chemical and Engineering News ".groundbreaking and accessible.balanced and scholarly.essential reading for risk assessors, physicians, psychologists, attorneys concerned with toxic torts, public health officials, regulators, government decisionmakers, medical and environmental researchers, as well as laypersons."-Journal of Risk Analysis ... Product Description
Dylan's Story is the account of one family's journey to recover their son from Autism through holistic health, nutrition, and chemical avoidance. Readers will find that Dylan's Story is not limited to individuals affected by Autism. Information in this book can benefit anyone who suffers from allergies, chronic health problems or neurological dysfunction.Dylan's Story details contributing factors which were the underlying cause of one child's Autism and the many failed interventions that would financially drain a family and cause their son to become sicker. It is the story of two parents who would be forced to find their own answers and look beyond a neurological diagnosis to understand how environmental triggers, toxic exposures, vaccinations, common food allergens and nutritionally void foods were playing a leading role in their son's autism. Most importantly, this book will inform readers of how Cristin Fergus, CNC and Joe Fergus were able to naturally strengthen their son's body and recover him from autism. The book contains extensive information on sources of common food allergens and chemicals that this family was able to remove from their son's diet and environment. It explains how one child's diagnosis of autism, would be later removed and replaced with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity. A diagnosis which would become part of Dylan's educational plan, to further protect him from chemicals and toxins that could overburden his system.Dylan's Story also includes recipes that Cristin Fergus, CNC, has developed for Dylan. They are organic whole food recipes that are corn free, gluten free, casein free, and soy free. The recipes have been developed based on their nutritional contributions. They are healthy alternatives which helped Dylan eliminate toxins and common allergens from his diet, to aid in his recovery. ... Read more

This book changed my life. It changed my family's life as well. My husband and I work with Autistic children so we read as much as we can about it. We stumbled upon this book and it has changed the way we live and feel. My husband was on several medications for the last 15 years due to a stomach problem. It was never fully diagnosed as anything serious, but treated as Acid Reflux. He received annual endoscopys and went through numerous barium testing, but nothing helped. He threw up whenever he coughed, and coughed whenever his stomach hurt, which was all the time. His immune system was completely shot and he caught every cold and flu that came his way. Because of this, he had a terrible temper and spent most of time cranky. He was over weight and run down and I wondered how long he could go on with this awful daily pain.
My problem had always been my sinuses, allergies and a cronic cough. After reading Dylans Story (which, by the way, is half a story; the other half is a rescorce guide, itself a very helpful and interesting section) we made a pact to change our lives the way Dylan changed his. My husband was never formally diagnosed with Celiac Disease but after cutting all gluten out of his diet, along with dairy & soy products, he became a new man. He was off ALL medications after one month. His body naturally adjusted to a new weight (50 pounds less), he never gets sick, and he's so happy all of the time. As for me, I never get headaches, I can breath now, and ALL seasonal allergys are gone! We never get that afternoon tiredness and we have so much energy now! The food is so delicious and I finally see a long life ahead for both of us. This little boy (DYLAN) recovered from Autism and now his story is helping to recover people from all kinds of ailments. I am so thankful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Autism
This was the first of many previously read books that really helped me to see the extreme measures that are necessary to help kids with this problem.Like Dylan, my son had problems from day 1 (milk allergy), rather than from age 2 from immunizations.

4-0 out of 5 stars great history of healing autism
Very moving story about healing autism.
But i must say that i completely do not agree with the autors opinions on synthetic supplements (about how vitamins and nutrients supposedely do not work when they are in the form of tablets).
From my experience (i am a person recovering from asperger syndrome) these synthetic supplements do help very much. And as surveys show on autism.com (not to my suprise) most parents do find them helpful.

My only problem with critizing synthetic vitamins is that it may discourage parents of children with autistic disorders to try them out for themselves.

Apart from that, i find the diet suggestions very interesting, and from my experience, they do work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dylan's Story
I find it amazing that these young parents seem to be ahead of their time. Their research and persistence led them to recognize autism as an autoimmune disorder resulting from environmental toxins, food chemicals, and medical and genetic circumstances.Autism has become a childhood epidemic and should register as everyone's concern. I do not understand why there is not more attention to researching the causes, and treatment. I commend these parents, and others like them, for advancing understanding and discussion about the causes and treatments. Their story is compelling, and the book is written in a clear and easy-to-understand manner. It is informative and I think the lessons learned by these parents, and the treatment plan they developed for their son, will be beneficial to other parents, and people who are concerned about good health.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!

Product Description
An exciting move to a new building that is the gem of the community turns into a nightmare for a Seattle-area employee when she becomes ill from toxic chemicals in the workplace. Her co-workers share their stories with her as they develop new symptoms daily. However, out of more than 60 who are affected, only she and one other employee step forward to challenge management on its stance that there is nothing wrong with the building. In a physically painful journey that spans 16 years, countless medical procedures, and a grueling legal proceeding against her employer, she learns to adjust to a whole new way of living, one that accommodates the illness she has developed: multiple chemical sensitivity. Along the way, she gains valuable insight into what's important in life, and she discovers her inner peace. In this intriguing true story that reads like a novel, Author Anne Lipscomb offers insight into: How chemicals are increasingly affecting public health. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective on the Challenges and Opportunities of Illness
Having been witness to the journey of a couple close friends who suffer from similar illnesses that are not fully understood or accepted by the medical establishment, I was delighted to find this book and enjoyed reading it.It provides important insights into the evolution of an illness and the complex ways it affects a life.It brings to light other dimensions of the journey, not to mention a deeper understanding of the complicated ramifications of chronic diseases. The author does a very good job balancing some hard facts and the politics and science of MCS, with a strong story line, interesting anecdotes, and insightful remarks about the spiritual parts. And the writing is both lyrical and precise. This book offers a good place for education, solace and inspiration in a world where toxins are creating more and more challenges for all of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring Story
This story of Ms. Lipscomb's experience with multiple chemical sensitivity was moving and profound. Her sudden and bizarre plunge into the unknown and very real risks of "sick building disease" was challenging beyond belief. Not only was it physically painful, but her treatment when she reported the problem was horribly unfair and demeaning. In many ways, the experience robbed her of her life. The wonderful surprise about this book is that it is also positive, uplifting and life-affirming.I was especially inspired by her Unexpected Spiritual Journey. She lovingly reveals how our most frustrating life trials are also our greatest opportunities for the learning of life's richest lessons. That gentle message was what I liked best about this book."Poisoned by Pollution" is an excellent, excellent page-turner -- well-written and occasionally wry!I loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Poisoned By Pollution:An Unexpected Spiritual Journey
An excellent book for all of us who have undoubtedly suffered life's many difficulties.Anne Lipscomb offers insights and pathways for preserving our dignity and independence even after suffering the greatest of insults--physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. She takes us through her painful personal journey in which she is physically destroyed, publicly humiliated, personally rejected and financially devastated.Throughout it all she struggles with a courageous spirit that rises above the cruelties of life and indifferences of bureaucracies.I highly recommend this book as an inspiration to us all.Bravo, Anne! ...
