5-0 out of 5 stars This book is an excellent guide for people with narcolepsy
This book is a collection of research summaries on various issues related to narcolepsy. Most of the chapters are well written and offer concise, data-based research that can be applied to living with narcolepsy.A few of the chapters were more anectdotal commentaries, but I believe that this is because they are written about areas of the field that have almost no research data available. This book is a must read for any person with narcolepsy who enjoys having access to the scientific data.It is somewhat technical, but offers a tremendous amount of information that can be applied to living with this sleep disorder.I highly recommend it for narcoleptics who have an interest in understanding the research that has been completed so far in this field.I would also recommend it for any physician (GP, internal medicine, neurology, psychiatry, family practice, peds) who may encounter a patient with narcolepsy. ... A wealth of information about narcolepsy is available on the internet, but this 166-page book is the most comprehensive, single source ofinformation to be found. In addition to facts, the author relates herpersonal experiences with all the symptoms and describes how thedisorder has impacted her life. It is an excellent reference sourceand a self-help book rolled into one.

People with narcolepsy usually have great difficulty reading a bookwithout falling asleep. If anything can keep them awake, this bookwill. It is written in layman's terms, with a positive approach andamusing stories that encourage you to read on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Book Thus Far
My sleep doctor gave me this book on my first visit, he keeps several copies in his office. That on it's own states it must be a good book to read.I read this book in one night! There were so many things about Narcolepsy that I didn't know and what makes it easy, informative and sometimes funny to read are the stories written by a narcoleptic about being diagnosed, each step of acceptance, each main symptom and how she has continued living her life with this illness.Kinda outdated but very informative for newly diagnosed patients or even the family members so they can get an idea of what you are going through w/out them quizzing you everytime you talk to them!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Honest & Practical Resource
I wish I'd found this book sooner! In her book, Narcolepsy: A Funny Disorder That's No Laughing Matter, M.J. Utley gives a very candid & helpful overview of narcolepsy: the common symptoms, types of medications, typical experiences, etc. Relying on the professional expertise of doctors & specialists, the author writes in a very easy to read, "down-to-earth" way, while providing the reader with a practical vocabulary & a general familiarity with the disease. As a person with narcolepsy myself, I continue to find her book the first resource to which I turn, when trying to help others understand this disorder. Searching for a greater insight into narcolepsy? Trying to come to terms with your own diagnosis? Looking for a way to understand or support a loved one living with narcolepsy? This book is a great place to begin.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most helpful materials I've found
I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy years ago.I have done much research on the disease, but still never knew many of the things I was experiencing were actually related to my narcolepsy until I read this book.Well-written, easy to read, and funny.....as well as informative.

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting read, but a bit unreliable
I have recently been diagnosed with Narcolepsy. I read this book and enjoyed reading the author's experiences. However, she openly admitts that she has not tried recommended treatements. So, it is difficult to understand the true extent of the disease, when there are so many ways to help control the disease. I would like to read a book written by someone who has tried the available solutions. There may be much more hope than indicated in this book.

On a completely different note, the book cover design is very poor. I'm a graphic artist and can't help remarking on layout of the cover. But, that has nothing to do with what is written on the inside, it's just a personal objection I have. As they say, "Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Indispensable!
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is newly diagnosed, both for their own reading and to educate family members, friends, and employers. This book is a detailed personal account of narcolepsy and cataplexy, explaining in plain English how the disease functions. I have loaned my copy out to many people, and may also purchase a copy for my local library. This is an excellent introduction to narcolepsy, explaining the basics and validating your experience so you know that you're not going crazy. Buy this book! ... Read more

Product Description
This groundbreaking book focuses on the impact narcolepsy has on a person’s day-to-day life. It addresses the diagnosis, treatment, and management of narcolepsy with particular emphasis on psychological and social aspects of care. A multidisciplinary team of nationally and internationally respected scientists, researchers, and clinicians discuss the detrimental effects narcolepsy has on interpersonal relationships, employment, education, recreation, and other aspects of everyday life, from driving an automobile to sexual relations. Narcolepsy’s effects on these and other daily activities are often neglected in the study of the disorder. This book brings into focus the personal and social costs of narcolepsy and discusses the often enormous impact that narcolepsy can have on a person’s self-esteem and quality of life.

Typically it takes about fifteen years for a person to be accurately diagnosed as having narcolepsy. Psychosocial Aspects of Narcolepsy is an aid to help caregivers and healthcare providers screen individuals with symptoms of daytime sleepiness and refer them promptly to appropriate professionals for diagnosis and help. The book helps these professionals find the most effective treatment methods and coping strategies for their patients who suffer from symptoms such as excessive daytime sleepiness, cataplexy, and hypnagogic hallucinations. Informative chapters address a wide variety of pertinent issues, including:

  • differential diagnosis and treatment of narcolepsy
  • the special needs of persons with narcolepsy
  • a sociomedical model for a narcolepsy counseling service
  • the psychosocial impact of narcolepsy on the individual and the family
  • sociodemographic variables in narcolepsy
  • the quality of life of persons with narcolepsy
  • the diagnosis, treatment, and psychosocial consequences of sleep apnea
  • the legal aspects of narcolepsy
  • narcolepsy’s profound impact on children

This vital resource enables physicians and other health professionals to give optimum, comprehensive care to individuals suffering from narcolepsy. Full of informative studies and helpful coping strategies, Psychosocial Aspects of Narcolepsy belongs on the desk of every person who wants to understand the impact of narcolepsy more thoroughly and who wishes to improve the quality of life of those with the disorder.

3-0 out of 5 stars Academic Mumbo-Jumbo. . .
This book is really a compilation of academic papers on the various psychological and social aspects of narcolepsy. Each study goes into great (technical) detail about its methodology and its results -- however, what I found to be most interesting (and valuable) are the conclusions drawn by each researcher and his/her discussion of the implications of their findings that end each chapter. The book covers many aspects of narcolepsy -- quality of life issues (i.e. self-esteem, depression, social distance, etc.), issues in managing symptoms of narcolepsy (i.e. the role of prescription drugs, napping, psychological counseling, etc.), and political and legal issues -- that I have not read about anywhere else. Although you have to sift through a bunch of academic mumbo-jumbo at the beginning of each chapter, it is these concluding sections that, in my opinion, make the book a valuable addition to the library of anyone who is living with and/or (like myself) struggling to get a better handle on his/her narcolepsy. ... Product Description
This book has been created for patients who have decided to make education and research an integral part of the treatment process. Although it also gives information useful to doctors, caregivers and other health professionals, it tells patients where and how to look for information covering virtually all topics related to narcolepsy (also Gelineau's Syndrome; narcoleptic syndrome; paroxysmal sleep; sleep epilepsy), from the essentials to the most advanced areas of research. The title of this book includes the word official. This reflects the fact that the sourcebook draws from public, academic, government, and peer-reviewed research. Selected readings from various agencies are reproduced to give you some of the latest official information available to date on narcolepsy. Given patients' increasing sophistication in using the Internet, abundant references to reliable Internet-based resources are provided throughout this sourcebook. Where possible, guidance is provided on how to obtain free-of-charge, primary research results as well as more detailed information via the Internet. E-book and electronic versions of this sourcebook are fully interactive with each of the Internet sites mentioned (clicking on a hyperlink automatically opens your browser to the site indicated). 1-0 out of 5 stars Not a Helpful Guide
Unfortunately, this book is not a very helpful good for patients of narcolepsy (or other sleeping disorders). The book was published in 2002 and several of the websites included are no longer accessible. In addition, the list of available "free" information for narcolepsy patients is rather sparse, while more attention is focused on all the possible medical journals and expensive textbook materials.

While the book editors claim that this source was written with patients in mind, it clearly has information guiding doctors to additional technical sources on the subject matter.

Also, the clinical researches listed are all since ended at this time, and only one website link is provided to obtain listings of more current clinical trials.I am disappointed with the lack of information I found in this book, as it only reiterated the basic definitions of the diagnosis of narcolepsy and elements related to that disorder. All of what is in this book is easily accessible for free via a google web search. It is definitely not worth the $25 and shipping costs. ... Product Description
Narcolepsy is a clinical syndrome defined by four symptoms: a compliant excessive sleepiness, a sudden bilateral loss of postural muscle tone, sleep paralysis and hypnagogic hallucinations. When cataplexy is predominant, narcolepsy can be misdiagnosed as syncope or drop attacks. The authors of this book discuss how to correctly diagnosis narcolepsy and how to avoid certain pitfalls which would lead to erroneous treatments due to the misdiagnosis. Moreover, this book examines the role exerted by obesity in the pathophysiological mechanisms of narcolepsy. This book underlines the importance of body weight as a factor influencing the narcolepsy, indicating also the possible therapeutic strategies by modifications of eating behavior. In addition, modafinil is a mild, wake-promoting stimulant that is pharmacologically distinct from other central nervous system stimulants. This book provides an overview of modafinil's effects on human and animal behavior and in the brain. Other chapters assess narcolepsy in children, the influences of orexin A in the pathophysiological mechanisms of narcolepsy and the prevalence of periodic leg movements (PLM) in people who suffer from narcolepsy. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
This book, like all other qontro medical books, is essentially a large print version of what's on wikipedia. The only reason I might recommend this book is as a gift to someone who doesn't understand narcolepsy and for whatever reason doesn't use the internet. The large font is nice for someone with poor eyesight (like your grandmother), but if she can use the internet, just hit Ctrl-Plus and make the font on the screen larger.

I see no evidence that any of the proceeds from this book go toward wikipedia. If selling this book did go to support the larger community, I would wholeheartedly recommend it.However, as the medical world is rapidly changing right now, this book is likely to be out of date by the time you buy it.All in all I would recommend avoiding this book and looking elsewhere.

High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder, or dyssomnia. The condition is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in which a person experiences extreme fatigue and possibly falls asleep at inappropriate times, such as while at work or at school. A narcoleptic will most likely experience disturbed nocturnal sleep and also abnormal daytime sleep pattern, which is often confused with insomnia. When a person with narcolepsy falls asleep or goes to bed they will generally experience the REM stage of sleep (rapid eye movement/dreaming state), within 10 minutes; whereas for most people, this shouldn't occur until generally 30 minutes of slumber. ...
