The Handbook of Neurodevelopmental and Genetic Disorders in Children, edited by Sam Goldstein Ph.D. and Cecil Reynolds Ph.D. is a well written, in depth discussion of the impact of genetics on the neurodevelopment of children.

The book is divided into three parts.The first addresses the role of neuropsychology in the assessment and treatment of children with neurodevelopmental and genetic disorders.The second part concerns five disorders with genetic etiologies that primarily affect learning and behavior: learning disabilities, ADHD, Tourette syndrome, anxiety disorders and autism.The final part deals with 14 less common disorders which have genetic etiologies and physical/medical manifestations, as well as effects on learning and behavior: Turner Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, Mucopolysaccharidoses, Noonan Syndrome, Neurofibromatosis, Sickle Cell Disease, Down Syndrome, Klinefelter Syndrome, Phenylketonuria, Rett Syndrome, Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome, Seizure Disorders, Prader-Willi Syndrome and Williams Syndrome.Each of the chapters on specific disorders discusses the current understanding of the genetic etiology of the disorders, behavioral and developmental manifestations, and guides to assessment.

Until recently, genetic, neuroanatomical, and psychological investigations on neurodevelopmental disorders were carried out independently. Now, tremendous advances across all disciplines have brought us toward a new scientific frontier: the integration of molecular genetics with a developmental cognitive neuroscience. The goal is to understand the basic mechanisms by which genes and environmental processes contribute to the development of specific structures and regions of the brain.

This handbook-style volume explores these advances from the perspective of developmental disorders in children. Research on children with known genetic disorders offers insights into the genetic mechanisms that underlie neural development and organization, as expressed in variations in cognitive profiles. The contributions provide in-depth analyses of a broad range of neurodevelopmental disorders, including those resulting from whole chromosome defects (Down and Turner syndromes), those related to defects in a single gene (fragile-X syndrome) or a small number of genes (Williams syndrome), and complex genetic disorders (dyslexia, autism). Neuropsychological Bias
The author presents a very biased view of child neuropsychology.
She omits many relevant research findings especially in the area
of neurometrics and presents a very narrow scientific base focusing
on only a few relevant researchers.There are also many errors
with regard to factual information and little cohesiveness in
bringing together research findings.Some of the real pioneers
in neuropsychological research have been omitted.

Typos and some inaccuracies
The book has more typos than any text I've ever purchased and includes some important inaccuracies (e.g., Prozac is referred to as an MAOI). Despite these things, the book provides some good general information, but the reader certainly gets the sense that the book was hurriedly thrown together without a good proofread, first.

Not very in-depth
This book was a nice overview of pediatric neuropsychology, but I found it quite shallow in terms of practical information. I found myself thinking "yeah, I know all that, now get to the meat."

A nice start for the beginner, but don't buy this thinking that you will get details of how to actually do pediatric neuropsychology.

From the supplier: A neurodevelopmental approach to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been developed. This disorder is frequently overdiagnosed unless a complete evaluation by a good clinician is undertaken. With negative media coverage of psychostimulant medication, it is especially important that a thorough and accurate evaluation be made before children are given such drugs. Conceptualizing the developmental path of children with ADHD as not disordered, but delayed, can be helpful. Then each child's strengths can be built on. This approach gives a child psychiatric nurse a child-focused basis for assessment and development of interventions for a given child.

Although children with neurodevelopmental disorders frequently present with reduced short-term memory functioning, the relationship between perisylvian morphology and verbal short-term memory functioning has received limited attention. Thus, examining this relationship in children with neurodevelopmental disorders was the focus of this exploratory study. Results suggested leftward asymmetry in the temporal bank of the planum temporale is related to better coding and storage of semantic material. In contrast, parietal bank morphology is related to coding and storage of phonological material, and presence of an extra gyrus in the parietal region is associated with reduced phonological working memory.
