From the supplier: A neurodevelopmental approach to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has been developed. This disorder is frequently overdiagnosed unless a complete evaluation by a good clinician is undertaken. With negative media coverage of psychostimulant medication, it is especially important that a thorough and accurate evaluation be made before children are given such drugs. Conceptualizing the developmental path of children with ADHD as not disordered, but delayed, can be helpful. Then each child's strengths can be built on. This approach gives a child psychiatric nurse a child-focused basis for assessment and development of interventions for a given child.

Product Description
In recent years our approach to neurodevelopmental disorders has undergone extraordinary change. This has resulted from tremendous progress in various different disciplines including developmental neuroscience, behavioural and molecular genetics, and developmental neurobiology, and from the very high quality now achievable in neuroimaging and neurophysiological techniques. This publication aims to provide a concise and interdisciplinary approach to the study of the different cognitive/behavioural phenotypes encountered in a wide range of neurodevelopmental disorders. Starting from methodological, nosographic, and assessment premises, the book deals with selected disorders of a defined but still complex genetic aetiology, and concludes with a description of the neuropsychiatric disorders that are most commonly encountered during development. ... Description:
Recent findings from neurocognitive sciences support reconsidering attentional and neurodevelopmental disturbances without giving up psychoanalysis achievements. From a diagnostic standpoint, assessment instruments particularly computerized ones aim at defining attention and executive functioning impairments. However the relevance and the timing of their passation is questioned. In terms of therapeutic devices, combined approaches with cognitive rehabilitation and psychotherapeutic methods are promoted. They bear two goals: through psychoanalytically-oriented therapy alleviating defensives operations which prevent the youth from investing learning material, and in turn or simultaneously, using remediation to foster the unfolding the youth's attention and learning capabilities. Both psychoanalysis and remediation appear to be complementary therapies whose efficacy has been recently confirmed by advances in brain imaging. ... Read more

Product Description
The improved survival of very preterm and very low birth weight infants in recent decades has been associated with an increase in the prevalence of physical and neurodevelopmental problems. Attention is increasingly being focused on the quality of life of survivors, who are at greater risk of brain damage and consequent neurological disorders, and neuropsychological and behavioural impairments. In this volume, leading experts present a comprehensive and up-to-date perspective on research in various aspects of the long-term consequences of very preterm birth. As well as extending existing knowledge of the neurodevelopmental sequelae following very preterm birth, a shared aim of this burgeoning body of research is to identify the mechanisms underlying variations in outcome, and thus recognise subgroups of children who are at increased risk of neurodevelopmental problems, for whom appropriate intervention strategies can be devised. Pediatricians, neurologists, psychiatrists and psychologists will all find this to be essential reading. ... Read more

Product Description
Behavioural interventions for Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are among the most widely used approaches, and have proved both extremely popular with parents, and controversial with professionals. These behavioural techniques are some of the few practical applications of psychology in this area to be scientifically evaluated and validated, and this availability of evidence allows both their strengths and weaknesses to be debated. Much of this debate has focused on the initial claims made about these behavioural approaches two decades ago, and the scientific evidence following these initial claims often does not enter into the debate. However, there have been enormous developments and diversifications in the approaches offered by behavioural psychologists to the treatment of ASD, and this text now brings together new evidence regarding these contemporary developments in one place, offering an essential handbook of contemporary behavioural practice for ASD, provided by the key researchers in the field. This book provides detailed empirically-based reviews of many of the behavioural interventions that are used to help children and adults with ASD, and these chapters are organised into three sections for easy reference. ... Product Description
The subject of strabismus is approached from a new angle in this book: it is considered a visual motor anomaly of nervous system development. This hypothesis provides the framework for the questions asked about anatomy, physiology, clinical phenomenology and symptomatology. The author portrays a clear conception of this human flaw and at the same time explores basic knowledge of the visual nervous system's normal function, development, and design. The relevance of visual psychophys- ics, central nervous system imaging technology, and developmental neuropathology is examined. ... Read more

From the author: Developmental exceptionalities span the range of learning abilities and encompass children with both learning disorders and learning gifts. The purpose of this article is to stimulate thinking about these exceptionalities, particularly the complexities and variations within and across people. Investigators tend to view learning disabilities or abilities, and gifts or high-end exceptionalities, as if they were necessarily and completely independent. This approach has led many in the field to look upon only limited aspects of the exceptional child, culminating in an inability to resolve the great variation and covariation that exists within and across children. Although there are a number of cognitive differences models that correctly advocate for an appreciation of profiles of strengths and weaknesses in the exceptional child, there remains a need for a neuroscientific approach that can help us better understand and accommodate the twice-exceptional individual--one with developmental disorders but also with high skills in the talent, creativity, or intellectual domains. We propose a model that will help us to fully appreciate that the brain that produces developmental learning abilities across the spectrum must be viewed as an integrated and multifaceted organ that is more than a simple reflection of its separate parts or domain-specific symptoms. We use developmental reading disability or dyslexia and the twice-exceptional individual as a means to illustrate how this model can aid in our thinking about these conditions.
