Product Description
Terrors of the Night is a collection of more than 100 accounts of eerie events and weird experiences that have been recorded by Canadians over the last 400 years. These incredible accounts come from all parts of the country and concern witchcraft, peculiar weather conditions, wild beasts, hardly human creatures, omens, prophecies, powers beyond ours, miraculous cures, and bizarre behaviour generally. The narratives, often in the words of witnesses themselves, are taken from the columns of old newspapers, journals, and correspondence. It is an engrossing and unsettling experience to read these stories because the reader keeps asking the question, "Could such things happen?" ... Read more

At point, you have to let go and trust your kids to take care of themselves-what's the worst that can happen.right? Unimaginable nightmares are gathering on the streets . Eerie sounds- and far-off screams give the girls scant warning that they are in for the night - and the fight- of their lives.Fan of horror will turn a new page of action, adventure and terror as author Jean Rusin treats them to her grisly take on "home alone"in her newest tale "Night of Teror"! 1-0 out of 5 stars More like "NIGHTMARE OF A BOOK"
I had interest in the book... until I read the excerpt given. At first thought, this books storyline has a lot of promise. However, just reading the excerpt, it is very, VERY novice. I don't think I have ever read a book that made sure that every word is written out completely. Such as this comment made by one of the police officers: "Sir, we are done here, so we will meet back at police headquarters. We will discuss how and when the murders occurred. We have killers on our hands; we must find them or they will strike again". Seriously? The sentence could have read " Sir, we're done, we're gonna head back to the office and go over the facts and evidence we have and see where to go from there". It's like a sixth grader wrote this. I have never seen so many run on sentences, over extended uses of words, drawn out conclusions with having a shred of conclusive information, and yet, also trying to pound in the story so fast as to kill 6 people, vaguely, in 5 pages. The whole story is basically done right there. except, the oh so smart police officers talking back at "police headquarters" about the when, why, what time, and knowledge of more then one "killer" before ever making it out of the victim's house. I don't even know what story is left anyway? All the promise in the description went out the window with the killing of all the subjects mentioned, in those 5 first pages.

And, let's not forget that, teenagers do not "act" or speak the way these girls did, before they were quickly, raped, and murdered. There was no precursor leading up to the killer's arrival. Nothing that said the men crept out in the bushes watching the house for hours. Waiting to make their move. Nope, they simply came on in behind the girl and her dog. I mean what made this girl so suspicious of a car parked outside? Isn't that a normal thing? I mean I don't walk outside my house, see a car, and run back in, scared to death that the boogeyman's coming. This is just so, so poorly written. I say stick to your day job. because if this kind of "writing" can be published, then I know I can make millions writing and will just have to change my career to do so.

This could have been a great story. But, it has all the irritating marks of a person trying to hard to tell the story that it loses the punch before it can be poured in the glass. My 15 year old son can write better then this. I don't pretend to be perfect with my writing or grammar. But, I am also not an "author" and I am not expected to be "perfect" in that area of getting a story across. The publishers missed the mark on this one. I can't even fathom how there are several mis-spellings in the book description. It amazes me how lazy this whole thing appears to have been written. I say skip it. Say the $10.00 plus dollars for a solidly written and grammatically proficient book. ... Read more

Product Description
Fear can have significant and complex effects on the lives of those working in health and social care, yet it is rarely discussed or investigated. Drawing on powerful first-hand accounts, this book explores the fears experienced when working in child protection, mental health, and with marginalized groups of people, and suggests how these fears can be understood and managed. The author provides helpful suggestions for good practice and training and describes the vital roles of supervision, management and workplace culture in helping practitioners cope with their distress. He also looks at how family members, colleagues and the police can provide support and discusses the benefits of recognizing and confronting openly the repercussions of fear, as well as celebrating its potentially positive and life-enhancing impact on practice. Offering innovative new ways of thinking about and coping with fear, this book is essential reading for health and social care professionals, trainers, and managers who need to be aware of issues surrounding fear and anxiety within their organizations. ... Product Description

Dreams have been significant in many different cultures, carrying messages about this world and others, posing problems about knowledge, truth, and what it means to be human. This thought-provoking collection of essays explores dreams and visions in early modern Europe, canvassing the place of the dream and dream-theory in texts and in social movements. In topics ranging from the dreams of animals to the visions of Elizabeth I, and from prophetic dreams to ghosts in political writing, this book asks what meanings early modern people found in dreams.

4-0 out of 5 stars 20th Century tales of terror that are subtle rather than gross
Editor Robert Phillips has selected 27 macabre stories by 20th century authors who are not primarily known for their contributions to supernatural literature, e.g. Dylan Thomas and Graham Greene. Most of his choices were unknown to me, but there are a few old warhorses.Elizabeth Bowen's "The Demon Lover" is a favorite of supernatural anthologists, as is Charlotte Perkins Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper." "Seaton's Aunt" by Walter de la Mare pops up everywhere, although I don't know why, since it depresses rather than frightens.

Don't be disappointed by the lack of clichéd horror props such as clanking skeletons, gory eyeballs, and screaming skulls. These stories do very nicely indeed, without the usual accoutrements of the supernatural.

A sampling of stories from "Triumph of the Night:"

"The Demon Lover" by Elizabeth Bowen--A young woman promises a soldier she will wait for him and off he goes into the trenches of WW I.Many years later during the London Blitz, and married to another man, the woman receives a note from her first lover.

"A Little Place off the Edgware Road" by Graham Greene--Craven dreamt that every grave in the world was connected to another under the ground. Then he sits next to a strange man in a silent movie house whom he believes to be a murderer. Nice macabre twist to this story's end.

"The Others" by Joyce Carol Oates--A man sees his cousin Sandy in a crowd, although Sandy drowned many years ago when they were in college together.Soon he begins to see other supposedly deceased people, and wonders why they all seem to be heading toward the same underground station.

"The Followers" by Dylan Thomas--Two young toughs follow a woman home and spy on her. This is a story where you don't even realize you're walking down a pier until you fall into some very deep water.

"The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman--Be careful in your choice of wallpaper for a sick room, so that the pattern does not unduly excite your patient. This story has one of the most cheerful crazy ladies in all of fiction.

"The Prison Window" by Louis Auchincloss--Aileen is the curator at the Museum of Colonial America. In an effort to attract larger crowds, her director forces her to set up an exhibit featuring a Revolutionary War prison that was nothing more than a storeroom in a rich man's house.Something begins to destroy the museum's treasures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terror Within:Excellence Without

The Moonstone team and Kolchak are a match made in heaven. The "Terror Within" is an outstanding collection of stories by Stefan Petrucha and C J Henderson.

"The Devil in the Details" is a great Trevor Von Eeden art fest.Oh yeah, the Petrucha script is pretty good too!"Pain Most Human" and "Pain Without Tears" are C J Henderson mystery sagas that only Kolchak can wade his way through without being published. This Kolchak is human, right down to his most basic of human emotions.

The Kolchak series from Moonstone is as good as we can get next to a new TV seres.Enjoy literary and graphic fiction excellence.
