Editorial Review

Book Description
Obsessive-compulsive disorder has been called the "hidden epidemic": only a very few of the many people who have it reveal their condition.  Ian Osborn is one of those who suffers from OCD, and his personal experience imbues this book with an exceptional clarity and understanding.

Dr. Osborn discusses the various forms OCD takes and--using the most common focuses of obsession--presents detailed and dramatic cases whose objects are filth, harm, lust, and blasphemy.  He explains how the disorder is currently diagnosed, and how it differs from addiction, worrying, and preoccupation.  He summarizes the recent findings in the areas of brain biology, neuroimaging, and genetics that show OCD to be a distinct chemical disorder of the brain.  He contrasts OCD with other "OCD spectrum disorders" such as anorexia nervosa and hairpulling, and he provides a historical overview that traces the development over the centuries of both behavior therapy and medications. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you think you or someone you know might have OCD, I highly recommend this book.
If you are looking for a book on OCD that goes way above and beoynd to provide real-life stories of those suffering with OCD, this is the book for you.

For many years I was misdiagnosed and misinformed on the subject of OCD.Although I had many OCD symptoms, doctors attributed my symptoms to depression. This book gave me the information needed to get properly diagnosed and treated for OCD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Threatening Vulnerable Catholics with Damnation
This book is a classic educational tool for priests in confessionals and all RC teachers of religion that only HARM is done by portraying God as waiting like a Vulture to pounce on every Catholic with OCD and tell him/her that a single thought is enough to guarantee Everlasting Damnation to Hell. There is no God like that.

1-0 out of 5 stars No real solutions
This book focuses on symptoms and not solutions. If you want real solutions, buy Jonathan Grayson's book called "Freedom from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder." That is the best book on OCD I have ever read.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
This book is fabulously informative and written in such a kind manner, you'd want the author for your own therapist. It is especially good for those who have just realized they have OCD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and Unusual Book
Dr. Osborn does a great work with this book. In the early chapters he provides case histories that let us see first hand what OCD is. Then he provides a diagnostic test for self-evaluation. Then he cuts loose with the definitions. OCD thoughts fall into four categories, fear of contamination (filth), fear of hurting others or oneself (harm), fantasies of impulse (lust) and fear of hurting God or one's relationship. (blasphemy). He does not cover hoarding or collecting behaviors in detail, but mentions the possible relationships.

Dr. Osborn's principle insight is that OCD is neurobiological in origin, and that it is successfully treated with serotonin reuptake inhibitors like Zoloft and Prozac. He argues that it should be renamed "basal ganglia" disorder, since this is the brain center implicated (along with the thinking trail to the frontal lobe). I hope this proposal is adopted.

The author uses four criteria to establish an OCD thought, and its matching, anxiety reducing behavior, which are the obsession and the compulsion respectively. Such thoughts have four properties which can be remembered by the mnemonic 2IRU. OCD thoughts are inappropriate, intrusive, recurrent and unwanted. This is what distinguishes them from addictive thoughts.

This book unlocked for me an understanding of a multigenerational difficulty and for Dr. Osborn's many insights I am grateful.

1-0 out of 5 stars review of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
The author of this book clearly does not understand the basis concepts of OCDs.It is troubling that someone with such little knowledge would publish a book on a very important topic. The premise that OCDs have stemmed from something other than a chemical imbalance is ridiculous and untrue. This book should not have been published nor read by anyone with OCDs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't read if you're looking for actual info on OCD
As an OCD sufferer and someone well-versed on the subject, I know that Levenkron's claim that underparenting causes OCD is absolutely ludicrous. I hope no unsuspecting readers pick this up as their first introduction to the subject and actually believes this. OCD is a biological and chemical brain disorder. While underparenting certainly may cause problems, it doesn't cause OCD. More helpful, suggested authors: Ian Osborn, Jenike, Penzel

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for both treatment and understanding ....
Wish I had found this book years ago.

It has been of immense value to our family, and, thankfully, put us on the road to full recovery.

For those determined to be problem SOLVERS, this is one of the best medical-related books you could ever buy.

Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understand the full picture of OCD
This book has not only helped me to understand my own disorder but to also try to overcome it. I can see how parents find this book offensive but really they read the book as a parent not as a caring person trying to understand. Yes a chemical imbalance can help to have caused OCD but underparenting can also play a big role. It frustrates me to hear parents say they had nothing to do with their child's disorder because right now i'm struggling with my parents because they still blame me for the things i had to go through and are still trying to change all I am even the part of me that is not controlled by my disorder rather than try to change themselves as well which has only made matters worse. Yes it may hurt a parent to hear they had a part in their child's disorder but it also hurts the child to be blamed for something they don't really understand themselves. But once you can see that you must change as well you can greatly help your child and make them feel loved rather than blamed. Steven Levenkron's books have gotten me through so much, he not only helped me understand my self-mutilation and help me through the recovery process in the book cutting but has also stopped my anorexia before i had severe medical problems, this book on OCD has helped me have a greater understanding of what i'm going through because none of my counselors or even during my hospitalization did anyone bother to look at the full picture and explain to me what's going on. I strongly advice you to read this book, it can open your eyes and help you see the full picture.

4-0 out of 5 stars Obsessive Compulsive Disorders: Treating and Understanding
As someone who has suffered from OCD and eating disorders, and who has also lived with someone who had OCD, I found this book to be very valuable. I can see where parents might take offense in cases where there is a strong biochemical predisposition. But the reality is that much of what Levenkron says about children who have had to play the role of the parent (underparenting) is completely true. The repetive behaviors and thoughts help to create a structure and order to the world that we did not experience as children. That is not to say that his theory is an exclusive explanation of this disorder. It will apply or be "true" for some cases and not for others. It is definitely worth considering, especially if you are somone afflicted with this disorder to any degree. And remember, people thought Levenkron was way off with his nuturant-authoritative approach described in his ground breaking book, Treating and Overcoming Anorexia Nervosa, and now it is practically a classic. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful in dealing with any disorder, not just OCD
In the five years that I have been involved in support groups for the partners of people with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (AD/HD), I have read maybe 150 books on mental health.

Many of these books explain clearly and sometimes even eloquently themanifestations and treatment issues related to AD/HD, OCD, bi-polar disorder, anxiety, depression and the host of comorbidities that are often traveling companions. If your loved one has any or several of these disorders, part of taking care of yourself and your family is learning the facts so you can "come out of the fog" -- the confusion and disorientation that living with a person's mental disorder can often bring. Some touch on how the brain conditions affect loved ones.

This book, however, is the only one that deeply, directly and specifically addresses the needs of the person whose loved one has a brain disorder. That it does so not with pithy platitudes and tales of woe but with profoundly wise, compassionate, and practical concepts strikes me as pretty rare. Not to mention life-changing.

The writing is clear and engaging, but I especially appreciate the way the book is organized. By the time people find a book like this, they often need all the cognitive clarity they can get, and this book provides it. No ponderous narratives to wade through here. Instead, each chapter is organized by questions the reader might have and that Gravitz inspires, starting at the simplest concepts and progressing to the more complex. For example:

--How will you know if your loved one has OCD and if it is severe enough to warrant professional attention?
--What causes OCD? Is it a biological diseases? Is it genetic? Is it just in the person's mind?
--What is home like in a familiy under the influence of OCD?
--What needs to occur in order for the family to recover?
--What strategies can you use to help yourself?
--What can you do when your partner refuses treatment?
--How will you know if you are enabling?

If you're looking for"tips and strategies" to deal with your family member's disorder, you'll find some of that here. But for people who are ready to grapple with the core issues and move towards deeper healing, this book delivers like none other I've seen. It is an inspiration.

Book Description

This unique volume gives readers a front-row seat at an exciting and crucial symposium.

Recent advances in theory and treatment have significantly increased our understanding of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet research on OCD generally falls in categories of either behavioral or biological, and rarely do the two meet. Concepts and Controversies in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder bridges this gap admirably. Featuring an international panel of 42 experts, this volume focuses in depth onand presents opposing viewpoints to the seven conceptual and practical disputes that characterize the field today:

- categorical versus dimensional perspectives on symptoms

- animal versus behavioral models

- single OCD entity versus OCD spectrum

- neuropsychiatric versus cognitive-behavioral models

- cognitive therapy versus exposure therapy

- self-directed versus therapist-directed treatment

- medication versus cognitive-behavioral therapy

These issues are presented in a debate format, with each side contributing a position paper on the topic, followed by a rebuttal from the opposite perspective. To further enrich the debate, timely chapters examine special areas such as sexual addictions, body dysmorphic disorder, trichotillomania, Tourettes syndrome, and compulsive shopping in the context of OCD.

This level of discussion and argument, with its possibility for collaboration and integration, makes Concepts and Controveries of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder unique and productive reading for students, researchers, and therapists of all orientations as they design the next generation of theory and greater nuances of treatment.

Book Description
What do Lady Macbeth, Sigmund Freud, Howard Hughes, J. Edgar Hoover, Shirley Jackson, and Carly Simon have in common? They all--along with 14-20 million people in the United States--have suffered at one time from an anxiety disorder. This book gives an extraordinary account of the lives, thoughts, and struggles of people like them who suffer from phobias, panic attacks, and obsessive-compulsive disorders. Gracie hasn't left her house in thirty years out of fear she'll be contaminated. Jerry spent hours each day picking up debris on the subway platform. Norm's bridge phobia led him into alcoholism. David bright, young, ambitious feared he'd lose his job because he so dreaded giving sales presentations. These are some of the case studies exemplary of the approximately fourteen to twenty million people who suffer from anxiety disorders in this country that are found in this riveting and instructive book. Raeann Dumont lays bare the features of obsessive-compulsive disorder, phobias, and panic. Utilizing cognitive therapy and self-help techniques, she helps readers recognize anxiety-producing thoughts and shows how, through reality testing and assessing anxiety situations, these compulsions can be managed. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars No science
There is no science in this book. It is basicly a book saying that a person with OCD can just 'get over it' when they cannot because brain scans have PROVEN that the brain is over active and not functioning correctly. OCD is a serious mental illness, not a fault of faulty thinking nor is it the person with OCD's fault.

I am sure the author is a caring person but she is not a doctor and seems to have formed her own ideas and theories and not consulted what other SCIENTISTS are learning. It is important to note that she is NOT a doctor, not a scientist, nor is she studying this disease.

She is basicly saying it is the fault of your thinking processes, not the fault of the disease. Yes, her book has some good ideas in it but she doesn't seem to realize that OCD is a real illness of the brain which, in OCD people, does not work correctly. AND it is not illness specific, meaning she talks of many mental illnesses NOT JUST OCD, and makes general statements.

I would recommend Brain Lock by Jeffrey Schwartz, who is a doctor and has some real science and brain scans to back up what he is saying. And read other books on OCD also, those authored by real doctors though.

I have OCD and Brain Lock was recommended to me by my therapist.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great!
I enjoyed all of the stories of others suffering from OCD. Most are extreme cases, but overall I could relate to the fear, etc. It was nice to know there are others with the same problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Sky Is Falling: Understanding and Coping With Phobias, Panic, and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders
Absolutely a must-read for those suffering from OCD or other Obsessions, or for those who want to understand loved-ones dealing with these disorders. Your understanding will greatly expand. Also includes steps towards recovery. Highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Misinformation about OCD
I found this book troubling, because right from the start it presents inaccurate information about the treatment and cause of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

Early on in the book, the author writes the following about the "in vivo" therapy she does with clients with OCD. This therapy exposes the client to a feared object/situation/etc. with the support of the therapist.

"The idea was that I, as the therapist, could demonstrate that there really was no objective danger in any of these things or situations, and help the fearful person to confront each of the items on the list and see that nothing terrible happend. When we had worked all the way through the list, the person would see the folly of these fears and no longer be fearful." And then she goes on to say how most of the time this works to cure the fear.

Exposure to feared objects/situations is an accepted and highly regarded part of treatment for OCD. However, the purpose is not to show the client that their fear is irrational or unecessary and knowing this does not cure OCD. In fact, in most cases people with OCD recognize that their fears are excessive and unecessary - but despite this knowledge they remain powerful, disturbing, and sometimes disabling. Therapy through exposure is intended to give the client opportunities to learn to live with the extreme anxieties of these situations and to learn healthy ways to cope with them. You CANNOT convince someone with OCD that their obsessive anxieties are in error and thereby cure them. That is not the nature of the disorder or the intent of the widely-used exposure therapy many Cognitive-Behavioral Therapists employ.

The second major red flag you will run into right away in this book is how the author keeps giving examples of OCD "caused" by faulty parenting. (Her first example is that her mother's excessive washing of her as a child caused her to have OCD and the second is about a mother who inadvertantly taught her daughter that thinking about someone dying could make it happen.) Though the exact causes of OCD are still uknown, it is NOT an accepted theory in the modern-day that faulty parenting can cause OCD.

Though I am sure there are interesting aspects to this book, I would recommend you look elsewhere for more accurate information on Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
I can't give full 5 stars, as i'm rating the whole book.
The best part of the book comes towards the end, page 229 onwards. The preceeding chapters are typical items one can find in all OCD books.
If I were to rate only those towards the end, dealing with how to get better,
I'll simply rate this book 6 out of 5 stars. ... Read more

Book Description
Previously considered a rare condition among children and adolescents, recent research on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has indicated an increased prevalence among this age group, insofar as it is now considered one of the most common of all psychiatric illnesses affecting youth. Handbook of Child and Adolescent Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is the definitive book on OCD in children and adolescents. It provides a comprehensive review of the existing literature on pediatric OCD, and is a welcome contribution to the extant literature, which otherwise lacks a text detailing the state of knowledge in this area. Emphasizing developments made in recent years, this new volume serves to disseminate information regarding effective treatments, etiology, and accurate assessment, and guides practitioners to formulate new questions that will further elucidate this condition.

Distinct in its thorough coverage of various issues in pediatric OCD, Handbook of Child and Adolescent Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder features:
*detailed biological and genetic chapters, including chapters on PANDAS, psychopharmacology, and neurobiology;
*discussions of assessment and pharmacological and psychological treatment;
*research relevant to the settings of the family, school, and primary care; and
*dialogue on OCD spectrum disorders and co-morbidities.

This significant work is intended for clinical psychologists and psychiatrists, school psychologists, graduate students, and all other mental health professionals. Primary care physicians will also consider this text useful, as will school counselors. ... Read more

I'm the mother of an 8-year old daughter diagnosed with OCD. This book opened up new doors for us in treating this disorder. It has been perfect for her, and she actually wants to sit down with me to read it. I believe that giving her obsessions/rituals an actual name and introducing her to a child who struggles with similar issues is a major step in our road to living triumphantly over OCD.I strongly recommend What to Do When your Child has Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder to go along with it--I ordered both and, along with my Bible, they have a home right next to my bed and already have worn pages!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunate events
We got this book the weekend my kids were going to their grandparents. I read it on the way to their house and it captivated their attention, both of them (ages 3 & 5). They listened to every single word intently and quietly. They loved the story of the boy and riding his bike up and down the worry hill. It is quite long though and my voice got a litte sore reading aloud for so long. At the end of the book, my son asked, "mommy who's book is that?" and I said "It's yours". He asked if he could write in it. The pages are black and white pictures like a coloring book. I told him he could color the pictures but not to color over the words so that I would be able to keep reading it to them. Unfortunately at Nana & Papa's house there was an accident involving water and the book so only half the book made it back. The cover was torn off and everything. I was so mad! I will probably re-order the book just because he enjoyed it so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
We were told by a Doctor, who hadn't even met my son, that he thought my son may have OCD.He was referred to the Child Mental Health offices in our local town and there was a 14 month waiting list!I decided to see what I could do as a Parent and I bought this book.I left it on the table and my son picked it up and read it - his initial reaction was "do you think I have OCD", I replied by telling him that I was interested in the subject as I didn't want to label his condition.Since reading the book he has come along leaps and bounds and his teachers said there has been a remarkable improvement in his confidence and his anxiety has gone!

3-0 out of 5 stars OK for younger kids - 3.5 stars really
The book was OK but not great.

It was overly simplistic and not too meaninful for a teenager or parent. It really only skimmed one aspect of OCD, compulsion, and did not address at all the cause of the compulsion, obsessions.

May be more meaningful to younger children...

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for young children with OCD
As a clinician specializing in the treatment of OCD, I highly recommend this book as a resource to clinicians and families with a child with OCD. I've used in in my practice and found it to be a wonderful resource. Clinicians can buy several copies and loan them out to their clients or recommend that their clients get this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mastery of OCD: An Indispensable Treatment Manual
Over two decades of basic and applied research, Kozak and Foa have established themselves as two of the world's leading authorities on OCD and other anxiety disorders. This book represents the accumulation of years of scientific data and clinical experience and is a "must-have" for clinicians working with OCD patients.

The primary strength of the manual is its concise, no-nonsense description of exposure and ritual prevention (EX/RP), a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy with proven efficacy.Kozak and Foa take the reader through a session-by-session account of EX/RP.Treatment planning, descriptions of exposure exercises, and relapse prevention are all described in terms that even non-behavioral therapists can understand. In addition, common obstacles to succesful therapy are discussed, along with potential solutions.

The concise nature of the manual is also its primary limitation. Therapists seeking a detailed understanding of the biological, cognitive, and behavioral aspects of OCD will probably be disappointed.Similarly, alternative treatment strategies such as pharmacotherapy and cognitive therapy are not described in much detail. However, if you are seeking a "bible" of EX/RP, presented clearly and concisely, this book will certainly be a vital resource. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The least that it will do is enlighten you to the disorder.
After reading this book, there are two points that I would like to raise before I give you my overall opinion, so bare with me.

Structure: The structure of the book is not the best and at times may confuse an individual using it to overcome their Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. You have to keep referring to the appendix which is a section that probably amounts to one third of the book. You may need to read a few of the chapters twice before you get the understanding that you will need.

Spelling and grammar: There were problems with spelling and grammar throughout the book, which were annoying but didn't really create a massive problem.

My overall thoughts on this book is that it is an excellent resource for OCD sufferers and therapists alike. It is very rich with 'real' help and advice that is reasonably easy to implement. If you suffer from OCD or are a therapist that helps others with OCD then you really should make a commitment to yourself to read this book. The least that it will do is enlighten you to the disorder.

Warmly,

Richard MacKenzie

Book Description
Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by obsessional thinking, compulsive behaviour and varying degrees of anxiety and depression. Studies have shown OCD to be one of the more common psychiatric disorders, with a lifetime prevalence estimated at 2%-3%, approximately twice that of schizophrenia. OCD is also considered to be one of the most disabling of psychiatric disorders (and medical disorders for that matter) and presents a tremendous economic and social burden, both for the individual/family and for society at large. There has been a recent increase in research in the field of aetiology, neural substrates and cognitive effects of OCD that are likely to lead to advances in treatment.Part of the Oxford Psychiatry Library series, this pocketbook provides clinicians with a succinct and practical introduction to the diagnosis, evaluation, and management of OCD and OCD-related conditions. Individual chapters cover the phenomenology, psychobiology, pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy of OCD. The book also includes a helpful resources chapter, including reproductions of the major rating scales used to assess patients with OCD (Y-BOCS, CY-BOCS, DY-BOCS, and CGI) as well as information sources for both clinicians and patients. The book serves as an invaluable quick reference for clinical psychiatrists, trainee psychiatrists, psychiatric specialist nurses and other mental health care professionals, as well as interested general practitioners. ...
