Hoarding behavior occurs frequently in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Results from previous studies suggest that individuals with OCD who have hoarding symptoms are clinically different than non-hoarders and may represent a distinct clinical group. In the present study, we compared 235 hoarding to 389 non-hoarding participants, all of whom had OCD, collected in the course of the OCD Collaborative Genetics Study. We found that, compared to non-hoarding individuals, hoarders were more likely to have symmetry obsessions and repeating, counting, and ordering compulsions; poorer insight; more severe illness; difficulty initiating or completing tasks; and indecision. Hoarders had a greater prevalence of social phobia and generalized anxiety disorder. Hoarders also had a greater prevalence of obsessive-compulsive and dependent personality disorders. Five personality traits were independently associated with hoarding: miserliness, preoccupation with details, difficulty making decisions, odd behavior or appearance, and magical thinking. Hoarding and indecision were more prevalent in the relatives of hoarding than of non-hoarding probands. Hoarding in relatives was associated with indecision in probands, independently of proband hoarding status. The findings suggest that hoarding behavior may help differentiate a distinct clinical subgroup of people with OCD and may aggregate in some OCD families. The present study investigated the relation of compulsive hoarding to other obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms in a sample of 162 patients with OCD. Obsessions and compulsions reported on the Anxiety Disorders Interview Schedule for DSM-IV were submitted to an exploratory factor analysis. Results suggested a four-factor model: ''Certainty,'' ''Contamination,'' ''Obsessions,'' and ''Numbers/Ordering.'' Hoarding did not load on any factor. The sample was divided into three groups: pure hoarding, nonhoarding OCD, and mixed OCD and hoarding. The hoarding group endorsed significantly less anxiety, worry, stress, and negative affect on self-report measures than the mixed and nonhoarding groups. Regan Smith has told the story of his life before and after diagnosis of OCD.He tells of his successes and failures from childhood into adulthood. I have the great pleasure to congratulate you for your effort made to accomplish the work "Computational model of obsessive-compulsive disorder: Examination of etiologic hypothesis and treatment" appeared in 1998.
Probably you'll be wondered why these congratulations are coming so late (in fact three years after the appearance.We thought that this is a must because your work was one of those who raised in our minds the idea of a combination between the medical knowledge and the computers ones in order to realize certain "models" able to simulate the synaptic processes.
With the condition of keeping the functional parameters of the intrasynaptic processes, the models we designed on the computer represents not only an excellent teaching material but also a good help into the theoretical audit of certain hypothesis and definitely not only that. On the other hand, if the present 3D movie is animated using only geometric elements, in the close future we'll be able to realize the same thing using 3D photocopies of the neuronal subcellular structures and even of the synaptic ones, in this moment being almost ready a prime version of such software.
We'll be very glad that you'll be so kind to express your opinion regarding our work and about what we tried to realize. Your suggestions will certainly have a role in the improvement of the quality of our work.

An Excellent Work!
If you struggle with religious scruples (rituals, doubts about God's love foryou and His sanctifying work in your life), this book is a masterpiece. It has a wonderful diagnosis of Scrup/OCD, bigraphies of some of the great saints who struggled with it, and options for treating this horrifying disorder. Well written, forcefully illustated. If OCD is ruining your relationship with the Living God, read this book. Let Christ's love transform the way you view God and build a ruthless trust that "He who has begun a good work in you shall complete it until the day of Christ." (Phil. 1:6)

A Thousand Frightening Fantasies: Understanding and Healing
I suppose that because the book states that it is written for laymen I should have not been so disappointed by it.However I did expect more.I think that the book is sketchy, and too many ideas are only hinted at without some depth of explanation.The idea that the author discovered links to the past regarding the topic is interesting, but the material throughout the book is poorly integrated. However if the book provides relief to scrup/ocd sufferers, I praise it for that!

Finally a real book FOR sufferers of Scupulosity
I have suffered with scupulosity for well over 5 years now and by far this book has been the greatest work I have read that sheds a shinning light onscupulosity. Even though I have a rather severe case of Scup/OCD, a 12 on ascale to 15, this book has given me tips and some hope on making it to thenext stage in my life. It combines faith and medicine to bring light to anillness the two fields cannot tackle alone. If you suffer from Scrupulosityor have a loved one that does, pick up this book! ... Read more

The least that it will do is enlighten you to the disorder.
After reading this book, there are two points that I would like to raise before I give you my overall opinion, so bare with me.

Structure: The structure of the book is not the best and at times may confuse an individual using it to overcome their Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. You have to keep referring to the appendix which is a section that probably amounts to one third of the book. You may need to read a few of the chapters twice before you get the understanding that you will need.

Spelling and grammar: There were problems with spelling and grammar throughout the book, which were annoying but didn't really create a massive problem.

My overall thoughts on this book is that it is an excellent resource for OCD sufferers and therapists alike. It is very rich with 'real' help and advice that is reasonably easy to implement. If you suffer from OCD or are a therapist that helps others with OCD then you really should make a commitment to yourself to read this book. The least that it will do is enlighten you to the disorder.

Proof is in the pudding: I BA and my Recovery from OCD
The recent collaboration by Kieron O'Connor, Frederick Aardema and Marie-Claude Peìlissier,Beyond Reasonable Doubt: Reasoning Processes in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Related Disorders, has inspired me to believe in the reality of Recovery from Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).What the authors have developed in the text provides both inspiration and strategy for resolving the deep distress caused by OCD.I realize that Dr. Kieron O'Connor and his colleagues have developed this text primarily for the clinician, but I must say that the work sheets, exercises and training cards in Appendix 2, make the text user friendly enough for most any person with OCD to follow.I am motivated to write a review of this text for one very important reason: The authors treatment strategies have helped me to recover my composure from what truly can be a psychologically painful disorder.Their Inference Based Approach (IBA) has fulfilled my need for finding a strategy which can address my deeply entrenched obsessional doubt, which, along with the subsequent checking and repeating, has plagued my life for the past 30 years.While it was doubt which had led me to relapse again-and-again, after each of my Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) Intensives, the authors IBA model has helped me to see the doubt as the lead element within my `OCD Story' which seemed to justify the doubt.IBA did what ERP alone had failed to do; illuminate as `irrelevant' my doubt-generating `vulnerable self-theme'- my fear of punishment for making mistakes -in my imagination-based OCD story.IBA seems to work by presenting a process which FADES OUT the logical, yet out of context OCD story, while FADING IN an alternative, non-OCD story. In doing so, IBA helped me to find a way out of a very real living Hell.My new story includes ideas such as: I need not be prisoner to a 100% subjective and imaginary OCD story!I am eliminating the maybes which have driven my obsessive doubt in the past!Being grounded in the sense-based reality of the Here and Now, I have turned the page from the OCD chapter to the new Recovery chapter of my life.

The message of the text is clear: we can create a new story- an alternative, non-OCD story- to be lived, grounded in the `Here and Now' sensory aware reality of our lives!We need not get locked into a dysfunctional way of constructing our personal Universe! Replacing the imaginary story of OCD with an alternative, non-OCD story, drives a new way of being, where one experiences life sensually; through their senses, believing their senses, trusting their senses, honoring their senses and as one will see- responding in accord with their sense-based reality.Healthy living bases its judgment on real world evidence made clear by the senses.In IBA, when the person manages to integrate the different steps, s/he understands OCD as essentially confusing `imaginary possibilities' with `real probabilities'. When we align our lives with what is `probable', over the `imaginary possibilities', and trust our senses, we position ourselves to recover from this disorder. When the person with OCD accepts this message, they no longer need fear the imaginary maybes which have driven their OCD in the past, or need to neutralize for that matter, since they now know the problem was an imaginary story taken as real.

Scrupulosity is often encountered among individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), yet relatively few studies have examined this particular symptom presentation. Using a large sample of OCD patients, the present investigation examined (a) the relationship between religiosity and scrupulosity, (b) the association between scrupulosity and the severity of OCD, anxiety, and depressive symptoms, and (c) the connection between scrupulosity and cognitive domains related to OCD.
