People with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), an anxiety disorder, suffer intensely from recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviours (compulsions) that they feel they cannot control. Repetitive behaviours such as hand-washing, counting, checking, or cleaning are often performed with the hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away. Performing these so-called "rituals," however, provides only temporary relief, and not performing them markedly increases anxiety. Left untreated, obsessions and the need to carry out rituals can take over a person's life. OCD is often a chronic, relapsing illness. The first symptoms of OCD often begin during childhood or adolescence. OCD is equally common in males and females. OCD is sometimes accompanied by depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, or other anxiety disorders. Symptoms of OCD can also coexist and may even be part of a spectrum of other brain disorders, such as Tourette's syndrome. A fascinating journey for some-a revelation for others!
Griest has done a great service in compiling case studies for his readers.He has successfully shown that OCD cannot be "limited" to a certain set of manifestations in every patient but is a biological disorder that can affect each person differently.Having lived with OCD and the medicines that control it since I was very young, I found this book hard to put down!Knowing what OCD is-is one thing; however, being able to experience it through the variety of patients in this book was not only a revelation but a journey into my own sickness.I rated it a nine because the only thing that could have made this book a 10--was information on a permanent cure. ... Obsessive compulsive disorders can take many forms, as this book acknowledges. Indeed, the object of obsession/ compulsion often seems arbitrary - compulsion is a drive which can "cathect" (to employ psychoanalytic jargon) almost anything. I found the book useful in addressing the problem of obsessional letter writing and the attendant gratification of seeing one's name in print. I came to realise that this was in fact a symptom of something that it is not the place of this review to divulge. However, this book is not in itself enough and readers would be advised to read it in conjunction with therapy. ... Read more
