Book Description
The aim of this book has always been to give guidance on the diagnosis and treatment of ocular motility disorders based on clinical experience, as opposed to a comprehensive treatise on the subject drawn from the primary literature.

The Third Edition sees a new team of authors who have kept very much to this priniciple in their nevertheless thorough revision of the book. Whilst there are no new chapters as such, the immediate impact of the revision is in the improved page layout with increased use of diagrams and flowcharts. There are new sections on feigned visual loss in adults and children, the management of residual defects and the section on botulinum toxin treatment in chapter 8 will be re-written to take account of the great advances in this form of treatment. ... From the supplier: Eye movements must hold images steady on the retina through gaze-holding mechanisms, which include vestibular and optokinetic functions, and fixation. Another function of eye motion is to change line of sight so that the image is brought close to and held close to the fovea on the retina. Saccades, vergence and smooth pursuit make up the second group of eye movements. Certain abnormalities seen in an eye-movement examination may provide clues to underlying pathology and suggest treatments.

Editorial Review

Book Description
The aim of eye muscle surgery is to restore alignment of the visual axes and ocular stability. Albeit compensatory and largely empirical, this surgery can be perfected with a better understanding of the physiopathological mechanisms involved, more detailed semiological analysis, the taking into account of intra-operative data and the use of microsurgical techniques. The three parts of this book allow each of these factors to be discussed at length.

Part one covers the basic data relevant to strabismus surgery, with detailed analysis of the effect of different surgical procedures on oculomotor equilibrium and dynamics and their application to any given disorder. The psychological aspects of strabismus surgery are also discussed.

Part two gives a full description of the different types of anaesthesia, surgical instruments, and all current operative techniques, covering the aspects of surgical access to, and operations on, the rectus and oblique muscles. Repeat surgery, surgical incidents and complications are treated in a separate chapter.

Part three provides the surgical strategy to be followed in individual disorders, whether these be concomitant, paralytic or mechanical, and in nystagmus.

A complete and comprehensive text on eye muscle surgery, the clinical and surgical material fully illustrated with drawings and photographs, this book will be of interest to students as well as the experienced ophthalmologist and orthoptist.

Contents PART ONE: BASIC DATA IN EYE MUSCLE SURGERY Chapter 1 Modeling and dynamics of the oculomotor complex Chapter 2 Effects of surgery Chapter 3 Evaluation of the extraocular muscle disorder Chapter 4 Amount of surgery Chapter 5 Psychological context of strabismus surgery PART TWO: OPERATIVE TECHNIQUES Chapter 6 Anaesthesia Chapter 7 Surgical equipment Chapter 8 Preparation for surgery Chapter 9 Access to the extraocular muscles: incision, muscle dissection and sutures Chapter 10 Rectus muscle surgery Chapter 11 Oblique muscle surgery Chapter 12 Repeat surgery (technical aspects) Chapter 13 Use of the microscope in extraocular muscle surgery Chapter 14 Incidents and complications related to surgical techniques PART THREE: SURGICAL STRATEGY Chapter 15 Concomitant strabismus Chapter 16 Nystagmus Chapter 17 Paralytic strabismus Chapter 18 Restrictive, neuro-myogenic and myogenic disorders ... Book Description
All motor behavior is characterized by sensory inputs causing specificmotor reactions. Because humans modify motor reactions voluntarily orthrough experience, this input-output relation is more complex in humansthan in lower vertebrates. Eye movements provide a window on fundamentalbrain function, not only for topographic diagnosis of dysfunctions butalso for the comprehension of normal brain function. This book highlightsbasic mechanical properties of eye movements, explains the neuronal basisof the vestibular-ocular reflex, saccadic eye movements, smooth-pursuiteye movements, and vergence eye movements, and deals with theirpharmacological manipulation in disorders. Since precise measurement ofmotor reactions is essential for understanding the oculomotor system, onechapter critically discusses current registration methods, and another one considers the possibilities and limitations of modeling it by controltheory methods. Its comprehensive characterization of eye movements andtheir relation to brain function makes this publication essential readingto ophthalmologists, neurologists, and clinical neuropsychologists. ...
