Product Description
Nancy Leupold, herself a survivor, and president and founder of Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer (SPOHNC), and James J. Sciubba present an overview of the different disciplines involved in the treatment of oral and head and neck cancer, with emphasis on providing information and survivor tips to help survivors cope with the disease, its treatment, and their consequential side effects. This book takes a deliberately different stance and approach from other survivor guides, in that it concentrates on helping the individual who has completed treatment and is now on the road to recovery. Furthermore, it is unique in that it is attempting to meet the challenges of oral and head and neck cancer with specific information, in the form of lists and tables of products and suggestions. The editors enlist the help of expert physicians and other healthcare providers from major medical institutions in the United States who, collectively, aim to provide the answers to questions from coping with side-effects, through clinical trials, to insurance issues. The book is written to appeal both to individuals who are affected by oral and head and neck cancers as well as to the allied health professionals who need to have the answers to the many questions that arise. ... Product Description
Oral problems are common in cancer patients. They can be a part of the disease itself; they can develop as a result of treatment; they can accompany other symptoms and present as a comorbidity; and they can even first present after the original disease itself has been cured. Oral symptoms can be complex to treat, both preventing administration of potentially life-saving treatment, and also directly causing additional life-threatening complications. However, many symptoms can be treated, and lead to tremendous relief of suffering for the patient. Oral complications of cancer and its management is the first book to focus on this unique set of symptoms, and provides an international, multi-professional reference with up to date, evidence-based, clinically relevant advice. It covers topics such as oral anatomy and physiology, oral assessment and oral hygiene, as well as more common oral complications of cancer and its treatment. Surgical, radiotherapy and chemotherapy side effects are detailed in all of the chapters whilst specific problems are discussed in detail in separate chapters.Other chapters focus on oral infections, and major oral symptoms experienced by patients with cancer. In addition there are chapters addressing the needs of specific groups of patient (e.g. paediatric patients, patients with advanced cancer), and the health economic impact of oral complications.
This book should become the complete reference source for the wide multi-disciplinary team involved in treating the cancer patient with oral problems; this includes oncologists (both medical and clinical), oncology nurses, oral medicine specialists, palliative care physicians and nurses, special care dentists, special care dental nurses/hygienists, and therapy radiographers. ... Editorial Review

Product Description
Oral Cancer: Diagnosis, Management, and Rehabilitation provides readers with a systematic review of the diagnostic and treatment principles that maximize the outcomes of patients who have been diagnosed with oral cancer. Written by authorities in the fields of head and neck surgical oncology, radiation oncology, reconstructive surgery, dentistry, and oral and maxillofacial surgery, this textbook provides clinicians with a unified management philosophy that is firmly based upon the best available evidence in the peer-reviewed literature.

In-depth clinical reviews of preferred treatment approaches and reconstructive techniques for each oral mucosal site facilitate the development of effective treatment strategies that are tailored to the location and extent of the lesion. The book describes the interrelationship between the site of oral cancer involvement and its impact on outcomes, such as local-regional cancer control and quality of life following treatment.

Features:

Insightful reviews of controversial clinical issues, such as the management of early mandibular invasion and the clinically negative neck

Step-by-step descriptions of surgical techniques which improve access to particular regions of the oral cavity, permit the resection of tumors with minimal morbidity, and result in optimal reconstructive outcomes

Exhaustive coverage of topics that have heretofore received limited attention in textbooks devoted to oral cancer, including the evaluation and management of oral premalignant lesions, osseointegrated implantation and dental implant imaging, and orofacial pain

Educational photographs and illustrations highlighting important teaching points and critical nuances in surgical technique

Ideal for reading cover-to-cover, this book is both an indispensable reference for experienced clinicians and an essential educational tool for residents and other members of the multidisciplinary oral cancer team. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing and misleading
Actually, I would rate this book 2 1/2 stars because although this book purports to be a color atlas of oral cancers, in reality, only half the photos in this book are actually of cancers or precancers. The other half (every other page, in fact) are of histology slides of cancerous cells - something that is not clinically helpful, and would be of interest and useful only to a pathologist. ... Product Description
In spite of great advance made by ENT and maxillofacial surgeons as well as radiotherapists to improve therapy of cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx, it has not been possible in the past 4 decades to raise the chances of patient survival above 40%-45%. However, recent studies with different combination therapies indicate that better results can be expected in the future. In this volume, the current status and results of therapeutic studies are presented by distinguished clinicians in the three disciplines. The book provides up-to-date information and encourages interdisciplinary cooperation. ... Read more

Product Description
Oral cancer is any cancerous tissue growth located in the mouth. It may arise as a primary lesion originating in any of the oral tissues, by metastasis from a distant site of origin, or by extension from a neighbouring anatomic structure, such as the nasal cavity or the maxillary sinus. Oral cancers may originate in any of the tissues of the mouth, and may be of varied histologic types: teratoma, adenocarcinoma derived from a major or minor salivary gland, lymphoma from tonsillar or other lymphoid tissue, or melanoma from the pigment producing cells of the oral mucosa.Far and away, the most common oral cancer is squamous cell carcinoma, originating in the tissues that line the mouth and lips. Oral or mouth cancer most commonly involves the tissue of the lips or the tongue. It may also occur on the floor of the mouth, cheek lining, gingiva (gums), or palate (roof of the mouth). Most oral cancers look very similar under the microscope and are called squamous cell carcinoma. These are malignant and tend to spread rapidly. This new book presents important research from around the world. ... Read more

Product Description
The regular use of morphine by mouth has done much to improve the management of pain in far-advanced cancer. This booklet serves as an introduction to the much wider subject of cancer pain management, and should be of interest to doctors and nurses working in this field. A parallel booklet is also available called "Oral Morphine: Information for Patients, Families and Friends". This new edition has been prepared in the light of several developments since 1984. Firstly, the campaign by the World Health Organization to improve cancer pain management globally. This emphasizes that analgesic drugs, and particularly oral morphine, are the mainstay of management. Secondly, a greater awareness of the need to distinguish between morphine-responsive and morphine-resistant pain. Third, the availability of slow-release tablets of morphine. The material in this booklet also appears in "Therapeutics in Terminal Cancer" (second edition, Churchill Livingstone, 1989). ... Read more
