Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease, is the second most common cause of disability (and most common after age 65) in the United States, yet few patients know much about the condition or effective management strategies for it. All About Osteoarthritis aims to educate patients about what osteoarthritis is and how to cope with it.

Nancy E. Lane and Daniel J. Wallace, both rheumatologists and leading authorities on osteoarthritis, explain the disease in detail over 13 chapters, including chapters targeting the spine, upper body and extremities, and lower body. Diagrams clarify the medical descriptions. Next, 11 chapters cover management of the disease, including assistive devices, exercises (illustrated), medications, local medical therapies, and surgery. The authors discuss dietary supplements briefly, explaining which ones have supporting research.

The information is comprehensive and credible, but the style is dry ("in order to have arthritis, there must exist a problem with bones, joints, cartilage, or their supporting structures," for example), lacking the warmth, pep, and personality of most self-help health books. Recommended for arthritis sufferers who want current, credible information about their disease and don't mind an academic style. --Joan PriceBook Description
Osteoarthritis afflicts about 25 million people in the United States--two-thirds of all people over 65--and the numbers will only grow in the coming years as baby boomers age. Yet few who suffer from this disease know much about it--how to relieve the pain, what exercises might help lessen their suffering, how to cut down on visits to the doctor. In All About Osteoarthritis, two leading authorities on the disease--Nancy E. Lane and Daniel J. Wallace--join forces to provide the most up-to-date and comprehensive discussion of osteoarthritis available, explaining what osteoarthritis is, how patients can help themselves, and how to find the best resources to manage the disorder. The authors offer information in a clear and accessible style, with detailed illustrations showing how key joints--knees, hips, fingers, backs, hands, and necks--degenerate. They take readers through the steps of diagnosis, how the body is affected, and ways to manage the disease. In user-friendly language, they describe all of the established treatment options, including new medications and their side effects, and help readers determine when surgery may be necessary. The authors also examine alternative treatments, clarifying which work, which may work, and which definitely do not. And they outline recent advances in the field and discuss where these breakthroughs may lead us.While osteoarthritis most acutely affects the elderly, it starts years before, and many people suffer the aches and pains of the condition well before old age. For aging baby boomers, much can be done before osteoarthritis becomes chronic and debilitating. This comprehensive guide will provide an excellent resource for patients and their families, caregivers, and medical professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Book gives natural remedy to STOP OSTEOARTHRITIS PAIN
Natural remedy greatly reduces pain associated with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia.Books give insight into a natural remedy for arthritis pain--and it's free! Jacksonville, Florida, September 10, 1997: Baby boomers may think they can have it all. But as they age, they might get more than they bargained for, specifically, two debilitating forms of arthritis called osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. While many have turned to nutritional supplements for the "cure," these are not approved by the FDA and are not substantiated by clinical trials. "There is a natural remedy that many are unaware of," reported Harris H. McIlwain, MD, a Florida-based board certified rheumatologist and gerontologist and coauthor of Stop Osteoarthritis Now! Halting the Baby Boomer's Disease (Simon & Schuster Publishing) and The Fibromyalgia Handbook (Henry Holt and Company). The treatment?A combination of conditioning and strength-training moves that almost anyone can do. "Exercise is the easiest and most guaranteed way to ease pain and stiffnessassociated with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia--the two most common forms of arthritis," McIlwain said. With increased years, the chances of getting osteoarthritis increases, as the body becomes less efficient at repairing itself. After age 50, 80 percent of America's population is affected to some degree with osteoarthritis, showing signs of pain and stiffness. Likewise, more than 10 million Americans have fibromyalgia, mostly women ages 40 to 55, which causes deep muscle pain, depression and fatigue. "Imagine what 50 years of use and 200 pounds of weight can do to your muscles and joints," McIlwain said. "But this exercise program will help to maintain a normal weight and keep aging muscles strong and joints lubricated. For fibromyalgia patients, exercise will reduce deep muscle pain, ease depression and promote healing sleep." McIlwain believes in this treatment so strongly that he developed a step-by-step treatment and prevention plan for his patients. The activity-based program he promotes helps to stop these forms of arthritis and gives patients a higher quality of life. "I even see elderly patients who, by staying on this exercise and strength-training program, are able to feel great improvement with reduced pain in just a few weeks," McIlwain contended. "Many have delayed or prevented worsening of arthritis with this plan." Helping the body heal itself with exercise is fully described in McIlwain's latest books, Stop Osteoarthritis Now! Halting the Baby Boomer's Disease and The Fibromyalgia Handbook, as well as in his Winning Series--Winning with Back Pain, Winning with Arthritis, and Winning with Osteoporosis (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.). Winning with Back Pain and Winning with Arthritis. All are now available at major booksellers. ... Read more

The word "cure" in the title is a bit misleading, but this book certainly makes a persuasive argument in favor of treating osteoarthritis with two common nutritional supplements--glucosamine and chondroitin sulfates--and following a program emphasizing better nutrition and exercise. The supplements are commonly used in Europe and Asia, where they've been tested in double-blind, placebo-controlled studies (the gold standard for medical research). They haven't been thoroughly tested in the United States, the authors contend, because drug companies can't patent the supplements and thus won't fund the research. The book also contains a chapter detailing a seven-step arthritis-prevention program.Book Description

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic Info that Can be Found on the Net
Much of this book is page filler, it advocates Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate as its main "cure" and then talks about eating foods high in antioxidants (which is really old basic info that we can find in plenty of books and websites). It is also very repetative, I remember reading the same subject three times near the beginning (page filler.)

Although the book is helpful, especially for really ignorant newbies who hate the internet, it needs to be thinned out and the common knowledge parts taken out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure : The Medical Miracle
I injured my knee around Labor Day and four months later I had minimal results with physical therapy and NSAIDs. My once active life had stopped, every activity I tried, even walking, aggravated my knee. I started on the Glucosomine and Chondrodin Sulphate program along with the vitamin supplements outlined in the book and had great results. After just a few weeks, I am able to hike and workout again. I feel better than I have in months! I know several friends on Glucosomine, but I felt better with the book outlining the dosage and other vitamins to compliment. I have not needed any NSAIDs since I started this therapy. I like that this program has almost no side effects and can help my injury without surgery. Try it for yourself, what do you have to lose but the pain?

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile and perhaps more
This was followed by Maximizing the Arthritis Cure (1998) which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one.My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle.Written by three differentlaureled academics and obviously put together by committee, this first bookwas a big time best seller and demanded a sequel. Most of the diet advicewas like something I had read twenty years ago.The exercise programditto. The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference.Infact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use ofthese supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis.People bought thebook in the hope that it would help them with their pain. They also boughtthe book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine andchondroitin. Many people understandably would not try the supplementswithout the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or isit just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? Iwas a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, andwe all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of ascoundrel."

So I tried glucosamine and chondroitin and stayed fairlyclose to their overall program. Two years have passed and although Icannot say for certain, it is my belief that the supplements are valuable. At any rate, my arthritic knee is much improved.

In the follow-up book, the authors give information on other treatments.

I have to say that Ithink they've done a positive service in writing these two books.Theinformation about healing in general and about prevention and about thepositive effects of exercise and attitude are worthwhile. The authors mayhave made megabucks (or maybe they didn't), but I don't feel they rippedanybody off, on the contrary.I am happy to be positive even though Istill think "cure" is probably too strong a word for what their program cando, although I only have my own experience to go on.Their reports of thedouble blind tests that have been conducted are good, but a long way fromconvincing proof that glucosamine and chrondoitin and exercises can cureosteoarthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Cure
After reading this book by Dr. Theodosakis, I recommended it tomy grandmother and 35 year-old girlfriend, both of whom haveosteoarthritis. Not only has it lessened grandma's pain, but also her depression has largely lifted. My friend, who is a fellow registered nurse, was thrilled that she was able to stop taking acetaminophen following her second month of taking glucosamine and chondroitin. She believes the dietary changes she made after reading the book were also helpful toward making her body more supple, like a slinky.I was indeed surprised to find some negative comments written by readers.Perhaps they were victims of the many fraudulent products our there with insufficient quantities of glucosamine and chondroitin in them.I found Dr. Theo's website to be very helpful in learning more about specific good and bad products.I will continue to recommend this book to anyone and everyone who tells me that they suffer from arthritis. There is hope!END

I found this book an excellent presentation on glucosamine, chondroitin, the various surgical options, advice about exercise and diet (the importance of weight loss, etc). For me it seems to be working asadvertised. I have osteoarthritus of the hip and knee and am seeingnoticeable improvements.I have a friend that is a physical therapist andshe has been using glucosamine/chondroitin and has noticed significantimprovements in the use of her ankle and her ability to walk. Certainlyglucosamine/chondroitin are not replacements for everthing as diet/weightloss are also extremely important. I recommend this book highly. ... Read more

I almost did not buy this book due to a previous reviewer's remarks. However, since there is little quality information available about alternative treatments for osteoarthritis, I knew I had nothing to lose. What a lucky decision! Karolyn Gazella really presented a wealth ofpriceless information in a compact, and extremely easy to read book! MsGazella melds the expertise of Jason Theodosakis, M.D. concerning the useof glucosamine, in its several forms, with her own hunger to find answersto difficult health questions. I have read other books authored, orco-authored by Ms. Gazella and this one ranks right up there! Karolyn neverpresents a treatment as a cure-all. She always drives home the fact thatany product is a part of a larger whole, and she isn't afraid to tell youwhat that "whole" is. After all, she speaks from experience.

Book Description

According to conventional wisdom, arthritis pain is an inevitable part of aging. Not so, says Dr. Grant Cooper in this practical, accessible guide. For those who do develop osteoarthritic conditions, this book offers a blend of commonsense advice, dietary info, targeted exercise, and tips on useful supplements. According to the author, sufferers can often entirely avoid the use of medication, injection therapy, and surgery — approaches that, when necessary, can be used as an opportunity to return to exercise and nutrition to slow the disease’s progress. The book features easy, illustrated exercises, including aerobics and strength training, that can be done at home, at a gym, or under a trainer’s or physical therapist’s supervision. Nutritional and supplement strategies — including glucosamine and fish oil — are presented in detail, along with suggestions for ways to keep on track. Dr. Cooper not only explores each topic in depth but explains how it fits into an overall holistic treatment program.

4-0 out of 5 stars Encouragement to Take Charge of Osteoarthritis
In the Arthritis Handbook Dr. Cooper presents a take charge approach for individuals suffering with osteoarthritis. His plan focuses on managing the symptoms of osteoarthritis using nutrition, exercise, and dietary supplements, while recommending surgery and medication only when other approaches have failed.I am most impressed that Dr. Cooper recommends complimentary approaches to managing arthritis such as the practice of Tai Chi, which is also endorsed by the Arthritis Foundation.

The book is not a typical arthritis help book - it is peppered with personal and cultural references that are as informative as they are amusing. The book also includes a glossary to help readers understand medical terminology and a list of websites for readers to learn more about osteoarthritis. Overall, the best aspect of the book is that it encourages patients to communicate with healthcare professionals, and notes key times when patients should seek professional advice.

Despite the fact that the information in the book is sound, the book is somewhat disorganized and at times seems to be addressing two separate audiences. Also, I would have liked to have seen a detailed reference list of the studies described in the book.Ultimately these stylistic shortfalls do not detract from the promising message of the book - osteoarthritis can be managed by lifestyle changes that are described in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Informative, practical, excellent
The Arthritis Handbook is an easy read and very informative. If you have osteoarthritis (wear-and-tear arthritis), you need to read this book.It explains what osteoarthritis is, and how you can take simple steps to treat it.The nutrition and exercise sections are excellent. The pictures make following the exercises very easy.Other treatments, like supplements, medications, injections, and even surgery are discussed in language that I could easily follow.I enjoyed reading this book and think you will, too.I wish I had found this book years ago! But, better late than never.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide for Managing Arthritis
The Arthritis Handbook is a book that I wish had been available 40 years ago and that I would have been smart enough to follow. Other than folk medicine books, I don't recall much in the way of medical advice for the general public back then. I assumed I would have to follow that path of my elders, that arthritis was a part of aging, and there would be a cane in my future.

Dr. Grant Cooper has written a very accessible book about osteoarthritis, one that has relevance for all age groups. For the young, it provides a plan to minimize one of the probable effects of aging. For seniors, it is a guide to ameliorating the effects of arthritis. One of Cooper's goals is to help the reader make lifestyle changes and the book is written and organized to give the reader the information to make those changes.

In Part I, Dr. Cooper describes how joints work and how arthritis begins. Some readers might be tempted to skip this part and go directly to the chapters that give action plans for the reader to follow. That would be a mistake. That would be a mistake. Knowing how the joints work and how arthritis sets in provides a foundation for the subsequent chapters particularly those describing exercise.

Nutrition is covered in Part II. The advice is not faddish and clearly presented. It might be the most difficult aspect of ones life to modify but the author makes a compelling case and relates the effects of diet to the information on joints and arthritis provided in Part I. Dr. Cooper describes why and how he modified his own eating habits which contributes to the effectiveness of the message that proper nutrition plays a major part in preventing the onset of arthritis and easing the effects of an existing condition.

I had already begun an exercise program as described in Part III before reading this book. Dr. Cooper recommends working with a trainer and I endorse that recommendation. I was going to the gym on my own before I engaged a trainer and was astonished at the ineffectiveness of my approach. It is difficult to effectively exercise based on text and photographs in a book. A trainer will make sure that you are performing the exercises and stretches properly to avoid injury and also make sure that you are exercising and stretching the right areas of the body.

Part IV covers supplements. As with nutrition, Dr. Cooper takes a practical, conservative, and balanced, approach that doesn't stray into exotic, supplement remedies popular in infomercials. He is careful to indicate where the benefits of certain supplements have not been conclusively proven but where there is sufficient reason to believe that they will have some effect. I found his discussions on fish oil and glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate particularly interesting as I was taking those supplements before reading the book. For example, while my fish oil supplement is advertised as containing 1,200 mg of fish oil, it is well short of the recommended amount of EPA/DHA.

The subtitle of the book is The Essential Guide to a Pain-Free, Drug Free Life but he necessarily concludes with a section on medication and surgery. He emphasizes that these options need to be done in conjunction with diet, exercise, and nutritional supplements. An analgesic will mask the pain but do nothing to correct the underlying disease causing the pain.

Dr. Cooper's book is a excellent, readable resource for to establish both a preventative as well as a management program for dealing with arthritis.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, could of had a better title
This book is inaccurately titled. Stedman's Medical Dictionary states arthritis is: "inflammation of a joint or a state characterized by inflammation of joints," but this book does not cover the majority of the over 120 types of arthritis that exist. This book only covers osteoarthritis, which the author states is the most common. If you have osteoarthritis and have not kept up to date with current complementary medicine then this is a good book for you.If you have osteoarthritis of the knee or hip, then it is excellent. The best part of this book is the author's clear explanations of how you can alter the course of this debilitating disease. There is some repetition of exercises due to the way the author chose to organize his material, providing recommendations for those with disease of the knee and hip. This book would benefit those formally diagnosed with osteoarthritis and those who have known injuries to joints that are likely to predispose them to developing osteoarthritis.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Arthritis Handbook
As an arthritis sufferer I was delighted to receive a review copy of The Arthritis Handbook which I read over the last couple of days. A slim volume, it is a cornucopia of information and I intend to keep it at hand.

Dr. Grant Cooper has written a concise, clearly understandable guidebook for managing arthritis to achieve the best quality of life. I realized while reading that when I was running fifty miles a week I was doing everything he suggests. The onset of fibromyalgia set me back tremendously but there is no reason I, and anyone who has arthritis, cannot slowly introduce the changes Dr. Cooper enumerates. The brilliance of this book is that, while making arthritis more tolerable, it also will improve your overall health.

The book is divided into five sections. The first is a brief explanation of the workings of your joints and how arthritis develops. The second through fifth are the remedial portions. Dr. Cooper addresses nutrition and his recommendations are in line with those for good health in general. Arthritis sufferers need antioxidants even more than others and there is a list of the most antioxidant-rich foods. Essentially you need to add a large variety of fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet. You also need to add more cold water fish as the omega 3 fatty acids are important. You should limit your red meat consumption. All these and the others mentioned are common sense not just for our health but also for the health of the planet. If, as Dr. Cooper suggests, you begin to adjust your eating habits slowly you CAN reach your goal of a healthier diet.

Part III deals with exercise. Counterintuitively it is important to move the affected joints. Dr. Cooper presents stretching and weight bearing exercises with clear explanations and excellent photographs. As with the dietary changes, slowly incorporating exercise into your daily routine can have great benefit and not just for those who suffer from arthritis.

Part IV covers supplements that may help some arthritis sufferers. Not everyone should take supplements and, as throughout the book, there are caveats and recommendations to discuss any changes you contemplate with your doctor.

Part V broaches the topic of surgery. Hopefully this will be a last resort and Dr. Cooper discusses the various degrees of surgery available to those who find it necessary.

I learned quite a lot from this small book and I have been keeping myself informed as best I can about my various forms of arthritis. I believe I can make some of these changes quite easily since I used to live this way. They are all accessible to anyone, however, and when the book comes out you will want to read it if you suffer from arthritis no matter how debilitating. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars title is misleading, but advice is great
The title is unwisely chosen, close to a cheap shot, designed to get the attention of people in pain. This is unfair, and diminishes the total effect of the book, which is well researched and documented for a book for a lay audience. It is very helpful to have all the information on glucosamine and condroitin together, with an exact plan. Very useful is the attention paid to the lack of quality control in choosing nutritional supplements. Dr. Theo provides excellent advice on how to choose wisely, and how to avoid poor or deceptive formulations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works for me (so far)
Three months ago I was as skeptical as John (below).I have OA in both knees and was contemplating knee replacement surgery.I decided to give this guy's recommendations a chance as a last resort, since my meds weren't helping much.I've been on fairly large doses of glucosamine/chondroitin, ASU, SAMe, and Omega 3-6-9 since around last Thanksgiving. My knee pain has reduced by, I would guess, about 75%.I don't want to over-hype this regimen, and I don't have any idea how long the relief will last. But it's real, and it's substantial.Note that you have to allow a couple of months for it to fully kick in.[...]

The above review was originally written on 2/14/07.As of 6/7/07, I've added the supplement MSM, and the "cocktail" continues to work.I'm still off pain meds except for the occasional ibuprofen. The supplements aren't magic, my knees continue to hurt, but I'm still much closer to pain-free than before I began the regimen. And most importantly, I'm still avoiding the surgeon's knife.~CPW

3-0 out of 5 stars I have doubts about glucosamine + chondroitin
Put it this way, I have joint pain, and I take glucosamine and chondroitin for the pain. But I have my doubts about them, too, especially with regard to the claim that they "rebuild cartilage" (note: I am not a doctor, and I am just a layperson and reader of average knowledge, who has done some reading on this).

Here is what the Mayo Clinic site states about glucosamine and chondroitin (Mayo has one of the top-5 arthritis departments in the country):

"Many manufacturers market dietary supplements that they claim can rebuild cartilage. But little scientific evidence supports this claim. The most studied of these supplements is glucosamine sulfate.

Glucosamine is a natural compound in your body that helps make your cartilage strong and rigid. Osteoarthritis causes the breakdown of joint cartilage and can affect any joint, including the elbow, ankle, wrist and knee. Although there is insufficient evidence that glucosamine rebuilds cartilage, there is some evidence that a combination of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate may relieve moderate to severe pain in some people with osteoarthritis of the knee. The mechanism by which it does this isn't clear."

Some doctors state that glucosamine mimics aspirin and Tylenol, i.e. it is a pain reliever, not a rebuilder of joints.

The book is still good in that it shows the current scientific ideas on how to heal and feel better; but let's not let our hopes of a "holistic cure" get in the way of evidence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Theo's glucosamine/chondroitin cure works
I have been investigating health issues for almost 30 years, and Dr. Theo's book is the best one I have read concerning the solution to arthritis.I am also one of the victims of arthritis because I have literally walked or run for thousands of miles in my lifetime. So, my knees and hips need constant attention, and I can personally confirm that glucosamine and chondroitin supplements work. The doctor is right that different brands vary a lot in quality, and I am glad he listed some good brands in his book.He also tells the exact amount of each supplement that you must take in order to get effective results.Although I did not see the GNC brand mentioned in the book, I have found that the GNC chewable Tri-Flex candy supplements work for me.You'll be glad you bought this very informative book if you have arthritis or know someone who does.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you have arthritis this book can help
The idea is so simple it is amazing no one thought of it sooner.

Your joints are made up of bones and cartilage. When the cartilage wears down you start getting pain and inflamation.

So when people take the basic building blocks that make up the cartilage, either in supplements or their diet, they body is often able to heal the cartilage. Simple.

Glucosamine, Chondroitin and SAMe are the supplements that Dr. Theo recommends. That is essentially "the cure".

Knox gelatin, that you can find in almost every grocery store in the canning aisle, is also a really great cheap alternative. Knox gelatin is basically ground up cartilage. So it contains everything your body needs to re-build the cartilage.

Many people who take one small package a day and increase their water consumption notice significant decreases in the pain they experience from arthritis pain with in weeks.

Another great book to help you increase your health in other areas of your life is The Creator's Manual for Your Body. It teaches how to know for yourself what is going to make you healty. Everyone is different and this book takes that into account. Plus all the raving 5 star reviews point to the fact that it really does make a difference for people. ... Read more

Book Description
The only arthritis guide you'll ever need-from the author of the landmark health classic Sinus Survival.

Arthritis can be healed. But the healing will not arise from adopting a single miracle treatment or taking a magical herb or pill. Living successfully with arthritis can be achieved by the simple, committed lifestyle changes and combination of healthful natural and traditional treatments explored in easy-to-understand detail in Robert S. Ivker's Arthritis Survival.

The twenty-one million Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis are often also suffering from unhealthy nutritional, physical, and even emotional lifestyles. Yet too frequently they are told simply to reach into their medicine cabinet for a cure. While conventional medicine plays an invaluable role in alleviating the symptoms of this disease, the Arthritis Survival program will help readers truly relieve their pain and replace it with a feeling of wellness and hope.

In meticulous and easily understood detail, Arthritis Survival begins with a "quick fix" guide that outlines the herbs, vitamins, and other substances that can begin to relieve pain right away. Dr. Ivker then lays out a program of lifestyle changes-from exercise, to eating choices, to emotional factors-that will help readers to gain mastery over arthritis. He provides specific recipes for healthful eating, a wellness self-test, and an extensive guide to resources that will allow readers to further shape their own arthritis survival program. Book Description
Osteoarthritis is a common disorder of the joints that affects more than 2 million people in the UK, and studies suggest that this number will double in the next 20 years. The condition is strongly associated with ageing and is believed to affect up to 30% of people over 60 years of age. Osteoarthritis: The Facts helps patients and their carers better understand their condition with a view towards self-management. The text is designed to be easy to read and is organized into two main parts. Part 1 details what osteoarthritis is, what causes it, who it affects, what the main symptoms are, how it is diagnosed and what the long-term outcome is. Part 2 summarises the current management of osteoarthritis, including the role of exercise, diet, medication, "nutriceuticals", alternative therapies, and surgery. The book also includes a useful resources section, including information on support groups, websites, and further reading. ... Read more
