5-0 out of 5 stars Better Bones, Better Body
Good bone health requires more than drinking lots of milk or taking calcium supplements.Dr. Susan E. Brown explains it all in her book, Better Bones, Better Body, a "comprehensive self-help program for preventing, halting and overcoming osteoporosis."

A medical anthropologist and certified nutritionist, Dr. Brown currently directs the Osteoporosis Project and the Nutrition Education and Consulting Service. She says that osteoporosis is a "needless disorder [that] barely exists in much of the world."It is "a disease of Western civilization created by our lifestyles."Because it's a disease we have created, it is one we can eliminate.

Dr. Brown says her extensive research enables her to say that "I now know that osteoporosis is preventable and that it can be halted once begun.I also know that it is to some degree reversible."Her book details precisely what causes osteoporosis and how to prevent its development.

Although many of us think of bone as being something that is solid and unchanging, it is actually living tissue.Old bone tissue is constantly being dissolved and replaced with new bone.Dr. Brown says that "every atom in our skeleton is replaced within a three-month period."While calcium is certainly a key player in building new bones, it doesn't work alone. At least 17 other nutrients are needed. The standard American diet either doesn't provide those nutrients, or provides them in inadequate quantities. Not only are most Americans slighted on the essential nutrients, they consume too much animal protein.Calcium is actually withdrawn from bone tissue in order to metabolize protein, which contributes to the development of osteoporosis.

Dr. Brown explains how to evaluate your personal risk of developing osteoporosis. She offers hope when she says "it is never too late to begin building healthy bone.Even the aged confined to wheelchairs have been able to build bone mass with simple exercises and modest nutritional supplementation." Dr. Brown then provides comprehensive instructions for individualizing a program to suit your needs. The basics of osteoporosis prevention and reversal are sound nutritional practices and regular strength-building exercise.Dr. Brown offers guidelines and examples for making those basics a part of your lifestyle.

Not only is Better Bones, Better Health a must-read for every Western woman, it's also essential for men and adolescents.Buy a copy for yourself, and extras for your loved ones--help banish this unnecessary disease from your life and theirs.

Product Description
Osteoporosis is the most common chronic disease in America for white females, with over 50 percent of these women suffering from it by age 45 and over 85 percent by age 70. Despite these numbers, little attention has been given to the disease and virtually none has been given to practical preventive treatment.Osteoporosis may be defined as a reduction in bone mass per unit volume such that fractures in bone may occur with minimal or no trauma. There are many causes for the disease but by far the most common form is known as post-menopausal osteoporosis. Too many doctors have accepted this disease as part of the normal aging process in women, and have been slow to accept or have rejected outright innovative treatments, particularly the use of anabolic-androgenic steroids. A leading medical expert examines the history of the osteoporosis epidemic and provides an overview of some treatment strategies, in this work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An enlightening life saver
I bought this book after I learned that I have all the signs of the triad and was struggling to understand both how I developed my health problems and how I can recover. This book answered all of my questions. It also helped me realize that I am definitely not alone.

The book is written in an engaging and easy-to-read style, which makes the medical information easy to comprehend. The book also includes profiles of various female athletes and athletic women. It seems likely that every reader will identify with at least one of the profiles. In addition, Dr. Otis uses great phrases that one can recall when she needs to remind herself of the goals. My favorites are "too fit to quit" and "too thin to win."

Whether you're an athletic woman or someone who cares for an athletic woman, I highly recommend this book. It will be a steep climb to health, but this book leaves me confident that I can be fit and healthy again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaches! Let women be women
I am a male coach of female soccer players.I would go so far as to say that the depth of knowledge contained in this book is beyond that which many coaches of team sports would search for. However, coaches who are interested in getting the best from their athletes, rather than having athletes fit their own personal coaching agendas, will find in these pages essential truths that will illuminate their coaching. There has been a strong social tendency for women's understanding of ability and success to be measured by male standards (the sense of athletic body image in connection with performance, which is dealt with in detail, is only one of them driven by this perspective), and this book is thankfully one which reminds us that women are not only entitled to be judged as women, but need and deserve to be so.As coaches, and certainly as male coaches, we cannot help our female athletes realise their potential until we understand them better and give them credit for being who they are, and encourage them to be who they are. This book helps us do just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for All Female Athletes
Books which honestly deal with the pressures and concerns of female athletes are rare, and this one should be required reading for every active woman from twelve to sixty. There is lots of information out there on how to be thin but far less on how to be fit. Otis and Goldingay are among the very few to acknowledge that they are not one and the same. This is not a book about eating disorders - though they are intelligently discussed. Nor is it a book about how to get in shape. It's much more. The authors honestly address medical issues such as amenorrhea and osteoporosis, provide information on nutrition, injuries and maintaining optimal energy for performance. Most important of all, they are medical professionals finally urging athletic women to be as strong as they can be. For anyone who's ever struggled between the twin camps of thin and fit, this book MUST go to the top of the pile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers a gamut of issues concerning women athletes
The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide covers a gamut of issues concerning women athletes including eating disorders, amenorrhea, osteoporosis, body image. One of the most important chapters is on getting and giving help, forming a support team, getting referrals, the journey to recovery while continuing training, and communicating effectively with family, friends, teammates, and coaches. The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide concludes with an excellent chapter on "Peak Performance: Preventing the Triad" and sites specifically what the woman athlete can do, what her friends can do, what her family can do, what schools and organizations can do, what their men can do, and what coaches and athletic departments can do to assist the woman athlete to thrive, prosper, and perform in the competitive world of athletic competition. Highly recommended for personal, professional, and athletic department reference libraries, The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide is enhanced with references, resource lists, and a comprehensive index.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide
This book is a must for all active women. This book has everything! I especially enjoyed the comprehensive case studies of accomplished women athletes and how they took control of their health issues. This book covers, in depth, eating disorders and how to overcome them. It also covers all women's health issues from menstruation to injuries to everyday aches and pains. Extremely valuable information and sound and compassionate medical expertise are key elements of this book. I highly recommend this book for ALL women, young or old. It is a valuable resource. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars If I could give it zero stars, I would
How ironic that ten years after the approval of Fosamax, we are now seeing the ACTUAL effects of this poison.Do yourself a favor...do your own research and don't believe the hype in this book.Sponataneous fractures of the femur, osteonecrosis of the jaw, atrial fibrillation.THESE are the REAL effects of Fosamax and other drugs in its class. Osteoporosis is caused by an imbalance in your diet. (acidosis) A chemist once told me a couple of years back when I asked her if she'd ever consider taking this class of drug, "I would never put that stuff in my body...it's poison."Read the chapter in "Overdosed America" about osteoporosis and this drug.It is NOT the cure...but it will, in time, prove to be worse than the disease for many who unsuspectingly and blindly trusted their doctors and the pharmaceutical companies. It's all about money. This is one of the most widely prescribed drugs in THE WORLD, and we are just now beginning to see the havoc it wreaks on the human body. It stays in your system for TEN YEARS after you've taken your last pill. It's all smoke and mirrors. It only LOOKS like your bone density is increasing because it causes inflammation. Please, do yourself a BIG FAVOR and take calcium citrate supplements in a two to one ratio with chelated magesium.Do weight bearing exercise, and DON'T PUT THIS POISON INTO YOUR BODY.

1-0 out of 5 stars Some good information but....
You have to be suspicious of a book when it advertises a drug (Fosamax) on the front cover and promises a cure when there is no cure. I think the book also confuses bone density with bone strength and all too quickly recommends hormone treatment and Fosamax. Let the reader beware! I have ostopenia and osteoporosis by today's measurements.

1-0 out of 5 stars Cure?
This book hypes new drugs and cures for and prevention of osteoporosis. Well, they may work, but I am proof that despite taking Fosamax for 7 years since before menopause, and other drugs as well (miacalcin), it isn't the cure for everyone and, in fact, my condition has worsened to the point of fracturing my spine when I coughed. I have ALWAYS exercised, weight trained, and have a farm with lots of inherent "weight training",etc., My diet is extremely healthy- no processed foods, etc. We are the guinea pigs of the epidemic of osteoporosis, and frankly, "they" don't know much yet. Unless you are truly ignorant ofthe subject, this book is not much help.

5-0 out of 5 stars Osteoporosis doesn't have to happen to you!
This book is a real eye opener. I thought it was a disease that old folks got. Now I know I need to start a plan right away for myself and my children to make sure we prevent this disease. Great book, easy to read and the suggestions on prevention are now a part of our daily lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for Building Bones!
I'm technical writer with a broadband company in Atlanta, and had neverheard of osteoporosis--until a bone density test showed I had osteoporosisat age 48. My bone density at that time was like a woman, age 65!! Imaginethe fear I faced. My doctor put me on Fosamax and HRT. I started walking 5days a week--started weight lifting every other day. I added calciumtablets and 2 more glasses of skim milk daily. Last year (2 years since Iwas diagnosed), my bone density had actually increased!! I'm strongernow--and more well-informed. This book confirmed what I was told--and whatI did to save my bones. I hope it will help you, too. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
this book is an excellent resource for building/rebuilding strong bones in the back.It has great exercises -- quite a variety with pictures to help you do them right. It was recommended to me by a physical therapist who said it was a textbook for her, and the best she had seen on osteoporosis treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch
I have a few books on exercises for osteoporosis and this one is the best.Well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT in every way!
I have been using Sara Meeks's original edition of Walk Tall for many many years, and found it so helpful. I have to say though that the new edition is much better. There are way more exercises and types of exercise, and there is lots of helpful, sensible, down to earthinformation about osteoporosis.

The exercises start out so simple that practically anyone can do them, and yet after doing these exercises I feel so much stronger, straighter (!!!!) and am filled with energy. I usually spend 15-30 minutes each morning, and find there is enough variety that I can do different things on different days, which makes it much more fun. After exercising I feel as though my body just floats upward by itself - standing straighter feels so good!I love the balance and walking exercises - am finding that I can walk farther than I have in years. Also there are exercises with resistance bands, foam roller, etc. etc. All good!

According to my physical therapist, Sara Meeks is a real authority in this area (osteoporosis) and I intend to stick with and grow with this exercise program to help maintain my posture, strength and (hopefully) bone density as the years go by - and hopefully without drugs.

Well worth every penny! (By the way, I been told I have osteoporosis for years.)

    Product Description
"Miriam Nelson's work shatters all the crippling myths we have inherited about the inevitability of weakness, deterioration, and osteoporosis as we age." ---Christiane Northrup, M.D. author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom

Osteoporosis develops invisibly. Starting around age thirty-five (or even earlier) women lose up to one percent of their bone mass each year. Often symptoms don't appear for decades. And then a bone breaks. Many women experience problems not obviously associated with fragile bones: chronic back pain, dowager's hump, a protruding tummy. But the cause is osteoporosis and twenty-eight million Americans are affected.

Now we know that osteoporosis afflicts women as young as twenty--and it is preventable. In this comprehensive, user-friendly book, Nelson details steps to fortify bones and avoid this debilitating disease.

Strong Women, Strong Bones features a self-test to assess risk; the most accurate bone-density tests; nutrition recommendations that go beyond calcium and vitamin D; bone-boosting workouts, with illustrated instructions; medications that offer new hope; and a special chapter for men (who develop osteoporosis, too).

Based on the latest scientific information, and including up-to-the-minute practical advice on the best nutrition, exercise, and medication, Strong Women, Strong Bones is the guide for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

I ha recommended this book to many people and bought it as gifts. i faithfully do the exercises and follow the menus. I even showed it to my dr. It is wonderful for those of us who are older and even the younger since I bought it for my daughter-in-law

5-0 out of 5 stars must have reference book for home library
I took out a number of books from the library including recent releases. Admittedly, I reviewed them from a different perspective than older folks as I'm just over 40.This was the most informative book with relevant information to my age group. Even though I work out regularly and thought I had a pretty good routine, there were plenty of enlightening strength exercises that have never been in my repertoire. That reason alone rates this book superior than others.

This book was recomended to me by a naturopath. It was easy enough to read in just one evening. The sections about how bones grow and what your risk factors are for getting osteoporosis were quite good. There is also good advice about what vitamins and minerals in addition to calcium to include in your diet, as well as the importance of vitamin D and sunshine, for calcium absorbtion. However, the food section is confusing. Nelson does not mention sea vegetables as the best food source of calcium and minerals to include in a healthy diet. And since she has the opinion that a person can get all the calcium they need from food sources, she should have included a more accurate calcium food chart in her book. For example, spinach, which tops the vegetable calcium secton, contains a lot of oxalic acid which interfers with calcium absorbtion. Nelson mentions the oxalic acid problem with some foods, but never mentions exactly which foods contain the highest amounts. Instead she says we should eat these foods for other reasons. So, why is spinach at the top of the calcium chart? Let's have a more accurate chart before telling people they can just add up what they are taking in with the chart she provides. Also, in her section on exercises she encourages women over 50 to jump vertically to retain calcium. A woman should gradually build up to 2 full minutes of jumping. What if a persons knees are not in alignment? Jumping is one of the most jarring and hardest things a person can do to their knee joints, especially if they are heavy on their feet. A woman who is over 50 and not used to exercising could easily get injured with this jumping program. I am over 50, and I already exercise 5 or 6 days a week, doing aerobics, running and weight training. I tried jumping vertically at a fitness center in front of a mirror to make sure I did it correctly. Then I went on to do a leg press, which I do on a regular basis, and my left knee hurt. My personal trainer said running would be much better for me than jumping. I do not have joint problems, yet, but I could after Neilson's exercise program. Also, the medication section encourages every woman to consider hormone replacement therapy. Does we all really need this therapy? I am discouraged that this book was rated so highly and recomended. It was mostly a waste of money. Only the first couple sections in the book were really worth reading. Check it out at the library or buy it used if you must. ... Read more

The role of the clinical laboratory in the diagnosis and management of osteoporosis is in its infancy. In order for clinical laboratory scientists to more fully explore and develop roles in the area, it is necessary to keep up with the many advances that have occurred during the past few years in terms of the basics of bone biology and the pathogenesis of osteoporosis. This book is written for clinical laboratory scientists, pathologists, medical technologists, residents, and fellows who need an updated foundation in the basic mechanisms involved in bone biology and in the pathological processes involved in osteoporosis. Additional chapters review clinical tools used to evaluate bone health, including biopsy, imaging methods, and biochemical markers, as well as the pharmacological agents used to treat the disease. ...
