5-0 out of 5 stars DEMOLISHES THE MILK MYTH!
Appleton's well-documented yet reader-friendly book shows that maintaining healthy bones is not based merely on ingesting dairy products, despite what the billboards proclaim. In fact, she shows us that excess dairy consumption can actually CAUSE osteoporosis.Since I can't eat dairy foods, I found much reassurance in her book. For a long time I wondered why the heavy milk and cheese eaters I have known seemed to lose their teeth, bow their backs, and break their hips in spite of all the calcium they had consumed.Appleton explains that there are other factors which cause osteoporosis which we don't hear about in the mainstream press, such as excess protein, sodium, and sugar.I've been following her suggestions for about a year, and my forty-seven-year-old bones and joints are feeling very good these days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Homeostasis key to Osteoporosis
Your bones are more than your calcium/magnesium balance. This book takesthe mystery out of understanding why the body loses calcium and how we canreverse the problem without massive doses of minerals. The key isunderstanding how our diet and lifestyle damages our bodies efforts to stayin balance, homeostasis. I read the older edition of this book and maybe ithas improved in the area of recipies and nutrition but the theory is great. If the new edition has the latest nutrition information aboutglyconutritionals and biochemical balance then I would up the grade to fivestars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An enlightening life saver
I bought this book after I learned that I have all the signs of the triad and was struggling to understand both how I developed my health problems and how I can recover. This book answered all of my questions. It also helped me realize that I am definitely not alone.

The book is written in an engaging and easy-to-read style, which makes the medical information easy to comprehend. The book also includes profiles of various female athletes and athletic women. It seems likely that every reader will identify with at least one of the profiles. In addition, Dr. Otis uses great phrases that one can recall when she needs to remind herself of the goals. My favorites are "too fit to quit" and "too thin to win."

Whether you're an athletic woman or someone who cares for an athletic woman, I highly recommend this book. It will be a steep climb to health, but this book leaves me confident that I can be fit and healthy again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Coaches! Let women be women
I am a male coach of female soccer players.I would go so far as to say that the depth of knowledge contained in this book is beyond that which many coaches of team sports would search for. However, coaches who are interested in getting the best from their athletes, rather than having athletes fit their own personal coaching agendas, will find in these pages essential truths that will illuminate their coaching. There has been a strong social tendency for women's understanding of ability and success to be measured by male standards (the sense of athletic body image in connection with performance, which is dealt with in detail, is only one of them driven by this perspective), and this book is thankfully one which reminds us that women are not only entitled to be judged as women, but need and deserve to be so.As coaches, and certainly as male coaches, we cannot help our female athletes realise their potential until we understand them better and give them credit for being who they are, and encourage them to be who they are. This book helps us do just that.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for All Female Athletes
Books which honestly deal with the pressures and concerns of female athletes are rare, and this one should be required reading for every active woman from twelve to sixty. There is lots of information out there on how to be thin but far less on how to be fit. Otis and Goldingay are among the very few to acknowledge that they are not one and the same. This is not a book about eating disorders - though they are intelligently discussed. Nor is it a book about how to get in shape. It's much more. The authors honestly address medical issues such as amenorrhea and osteoporosis, provide information on nutrition, injuries and maintaining optimal energy for performance. Most important of all, they are medical professionals finally urging athletic women to be as strong as they can be. For anyone who's ever struggled between the twin camps of thin and fit, this book MUST go to the top of the pile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Covers a gamut of issues concerning women athletes
The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide covers a gamut of issues concerning women athletes including eating disorders, amenorrhea, osteoporosis, body image. One of the most important chapters is on getting and giving help, forming a support team, getting referrals, the journey to recovery while continuing training, and communicating effectively with family, friends, teammates, and coaches. The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide concludes with an excellent chapter on "Peak Performance: Preventing the Triad" and sites specifically what the woman athlete can do, what her friends can do, what her family can do, what schools and organizations can do, what their men can do, and what coaches and athletic departments can do to assist the woman athlete to thrive, prosper, and perform in the competitive world of athletic competition. Highly recommended for personal, professional, and athletic department reference libraries, The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide is enhanced with references, resource lists, and a comprehensive index.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Athletic Woman's Survival Guide
This book is a must for all active women. This book has everything! I especially enjoyed the comprehensive case studies of accomplished women athletes and how they took control of their health issues. This book covers, in depth, eating disorders and how to overcome them. It also covers all women's health issues from menstruation to injuries to everyday aches and pains. Extremely valuable information and sound and compassionate medical expertise are key elements of this book. I highly recommend this book for ALL women, young or old. It is a valuable resource. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very strongly recommended reading for anyone having to deal with the condition of osteoporosis in their family or family history
Very strongly recommended reading for anyone having to deal with the condition of osteoporosis in their family or family history and is seeking to avoid bone loss themselves, Osteoporosis Prevention: A Provocative Approach To Strong Bones And Good Health by consumer writer Renee Newman is a competent and thoroughly "reader friendly" approach to preventing osteoporosis. Inclusive of information on how to: help prevent osteoporosis and broken bones; get enough calcium and other bone nutrients from food; make exercise safe and fun; retain a youthful posture; select a bone density center; get maximum benefit from your bone density exam; understand bone density reports; avoid being duped by advertising; help seniors maintain their muscles and their bones; how medical professionals can motivate patients; and how to be a savvy patient. Osteoporosis Prevention should be a part of every community health center and public library Health & Medicine reference collection for non-specialist general readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT SOURCE OF INFORMATION ON OSTEOPOROSIS
This book is very well written, easy to understand and organized in such a way that makes it very easy to grasp important information on a complicated subject. It gave me great information on how I can be more proactive in my treatment of osteoporosis. The information on getting all of your test results from your physician makes perfect sense for addressing specific areas in your body that need to be strengthened. This is a great book for anyone with osteoporosis or osteopenia to gain a thorough understanding of what osteoporosis is and what your role in your heath can be.The quizzes in each chapter help to reinforce the important information that is covered in the book.I have read numerous books on this subject and I also have exercise videos specific to osteoporosis. This is by far the best "hands on" book on the subject. I am getting copies for my sisters as well since they have the same issues with bone health that I do.

5-0 out of 5 stars An indispensable guide to bone health!
This well-referenced book gives a thorough yet concise overview of what you should do to maintain your bones. It doesn't just tell you to exercise, it outlines the types of exercises that experts have found best for building bone in the various areas of your skeleton, and it emphasizes the importance of having professionals guide you and check your form.

The chapters on calcium and other bone nutrients don't just list the recommended amounts, they also tell you their sources, toxic levels and the effects of too little or too much these nutrients. The information is backed up with government website addresses and journal articles.

Besides discussing the pros and cons of various medical therapies, Newman gives a lot of practical tips for having good posture, preventing falls and choosing a test center, osteoporosis specialist and personal trainer.

What is really unique about this book is Newman's personal experiences with bone density testing and the way she combined various prevention strategies to bring her bone densities back to normal levels. This book is also unique in the way it encourages people to get complete copies of their bone density reports and to discuss them with their test centers and doctors. Newman claims that seeing and comparing her bone density results on paper motivated her to make constructive changes that helped reverse her bone loss.

1-0 out of 5 stars Osteoporosis Prevention
This book has a SOME good information. HOWEVER, this important information is assimilated by a layperson, not a medical expert who works with patients and emerging research on a daily basis. The book is poorly presented and edited. MUCH better books are "Osteoporosis for Dummies," "Reversing Osteopenia," and "Action Plan for Osteoporosis." Most importantly, be sure and discuss your questions with a medical specialist--don't rely on any of these books to self-diagnose or self-treat. The author's gem and personal analogies fall flat and are distracting in this book.

P.S. Like the author, I am a patient with osteoporosis, a writer, and have done extensive research on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
Renee Newman's book is a wonderful and easy way to learn and read about the importance of good heatlh, strong bones, and exercise in relation to osteoporosis. In each chapter are clear and specific examples to help one become more aware of how to prevent osteoporosis and to maintain good health. A great find to share with friends and family. I thoroughly enjoyed "Osteoporosis Prevention" and after reading the book obtained a better understanding of bone loss and how to prevent it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Personal, true story is a nice alternative to all the books on diet, exercise and supplements
This is a first person, true story and while most books on the topic are more technical and prescriptive, I think it connects on a more personal level, especially for people who are unfamiliar with what osteoporosis can do to one's life.

Imaginea condition where you lose some of your stability and where every fall results in broken bones. Plural. The author was diagnosed in her mid-30's as having the bone density of a 90 year old and today, she has hairline fractures throughout her spine. One wrong fall could result in a broken spine or neck, paralysis or death.Even taking a bath or making a bed becomes something requiring vigilance. That's the world Alice has lived in for the last 15 years.

Of course, she is on permanent disability and can no longer do her job with the local Marshal's office. But she perseveres and leads a pretty normal life.

Her goal now is to get the word out, to let people, male and female, know about the risks and what they can do to identify and treat this disease.

It's a first work and has minor flaws in grammar and repetition. But it's also fascinating and as a personal account, is a nice complement to all the books on diet, exercise and supplements.

4-0 out of 5 stars A treasure
This is truly a wonderful book, beautifully and thoughtfully written, with valuable information, excellent exercises, stretches and meditations. It condenses some of the valuable treasures yoga offers in spare, intelligent prose that seem lit from within. I would recommend it for any younger, healthy woman wishing to prevent osteoporosis in later life or looking for a way to balance hormones naturally now.

Someone older and anyone with health problems should definitely show this book to her doctor before plunging in. Many of the poses require a great deal of strength in the upper body and great flexibility.

I gave it only four stars because having just one illustration per exercise or stretch, most of which are multi-stepped, is often not sufficient for a person new to yoga, as I am, to figure out how to do the sequences correctly. Although I read the instructions a number of times before trying each pose, I fear I might do something wrong and inadvertently hurt myself. Still, this isn't insurmountable: I have other books which show many of the poses in more detail, and a video. I think a teacher or a class would be most helpful, too, for anyone planning to buy this book.

All in all, though, it is a great book which will get a lot of use: a real treasure!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yoga, helps your hormones make connections with bone and
muscles, to prevent bone loss.

This book is aimed at women; the authoris a yoga teacher that specializes with post-menopausal women. Her Motherwas diagnosed with osteoporosis. This book is a gem, very well researchedand thorough.

Then 5 routines are shown to build boneand maintain strong bones and develop muscle tone.Five routines cover:Upper body,Lower body, Ovaries, Adrenals, and Parathyroids, Pineal, andPituitary glands.Parathyroid glands control calcium levels in the blood.

Black and white sketches show the pose, the name, the benefits andinstruction, also the focus and sometimes a visualization is given.Noequipment is necessaryand benefits include more energy, deeper sleep andless stress.

The author encouarges Women to see how YOGA can benefit themin other areas of life. The book ends with a bonus section for menopausesymptoms.

In this illuminating book, renowned photographer Amelia Davis turns her lens on those afflicted with osteoporotic disease, smashing the stereotype of osteoporosis as a disease of older women. Through beautiful images and candid personal histories, the book communicates the message that the condition affects both women and men across the life span, is preventable and treatable, and should not be considered part of the normal aging process. In the United States alone there are almost 35 million people living with the disease, and that number continues to grow.

Here are the inspirational stories of men, women, and even children living with osteoporosis, stories that highlight each individual’s struggle to preserve function and prevent further bone loss. Treatments, therapies, and diets are discussed and shared, from the latest advances in prescription medication to the healing power of exercise. Positive and upbeat, Faces of Osteoporosis offers a much-needed touchstone for anyone coping with the disease.

Book Description
"There was never any doubt in my mind that if I went after osteoporosis, I could control it and lead a healthy life. That's my message to other women: No one can do this for you-you've got to do it for yourself. And you can."(Ann Richards)

Forty-four million Americans, thirty million of whom are women, will face osteoporosis in some form. Often triggered by hormonal changes that occur after menopause, osteoporosis results in the fracturing of bones, which can prove fatal to the elderly. One out of every six affected women will break her hip; only one out of three will regain her independence.

In 1994, after falling and fracturing her hand, Ann Richards went for a bone density test. She was diagnosed with osteopenia, an early stage of osteoporosis. After witnessing both of her grandmothers and her mother fall victim to the disease, Richards was determined to overcome its incapacitating effects. She began a physician-approved regimen of medication and dramatically changed her lifestyle.

In I'm Not Slowing Down, the former Texas governor, known for her saucy straight talk, and leading osteoporosis authority Sydney Lou Bonnick tell women what they need to know to combat this devastating disease.Nearly a decade after her original diagnosis, Richards's bone density remains essentially stable. Readers will benefit from advice on everything from diet to exercise to the individual histories that must precede the implementation of any bone-building program if women are to begin the second act of their lives with strength, agility, and confidence. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Unacceptable book
Not only is the information in the book completely out of date since the hormones (Provera) have been shown to be dangerous and not to help bones or heart, but to my deep disappointment, Ann Richards, it is disclosed, wasa spokesperson for the pharmaceutical company who manufactured the hormones!

5-0 out of 5 stars Women over 50--a must read
This is an excellent, very current overview of this all too common disease and its treatment. Let's face it--we're all responsible for our own health, few of us use the same physician for our whole adult lives, and education is a must. Most of us are generally aware of this disease, but did you know: that hip fractures are really breaks in the femur neck, the top of the thigh bone? that there are several drugs out there to treat this, not just fosamax? that osteoporosis can result from lack of calcium or exercise during childhood? This book explains what those T-scores from your bone density test really mean. Lots of info here too on exercise and diet. A bit less interesting is the personal discussion from Ann Richards on her own life, but that doesn't mar this extremely useful work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Full disclosure
While I found this book to be useful and Ms. Richards' style to be non-technical and engaging, I wish that, before I bought the book, I had seen the statement which is on the reverse of the title page: "Ann Richards is a spokesperson for Eli Lilly, which owns the patent for Evista.Dr. Richard U. Levine, M.D. has been a member of the speakers' bureau for Eli Lilly."

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational!!!
I could not put this book down. One would expect a book on Osteoporosis to be a bit dry but Ann keeps it real! You go girl.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Osteoporosis Bible
I just finished this terrific book. I watched my grandmother, and now my mother suffer from osteoporosis. I never totally understood this issue and the fact that it is preventable. I always believed there was nothing that could be done. Now I know the truth. This book explains EVERYTHING! I am calling my
doctor today to schedule an appointment to discuss the various options. I am 47 and just entering menopause. Please, please, everyone reading this review, buy a copy for every woman you know, regardless of their age. Thanks Ann. ... Read more

Book Description

Osteoporosis is indeed a global threat because every human being is vulnerable and subject to it as time goes by. The authors point out the enormous scale of the problem in terms of human suffering, morbidity and mortality on the one hand and the astronomical national costs on the other. The book is up-beat and optimistic with a touch of humour; it is scientifically based but provides easy-to-follow guidelines for lifelong maintenance of skeletal structure and function. Osteoporosis is preventable, if doctors want to, and every doctor can contribute. Bone is every doctor's and every body's business.
