4-0 out of 5 stars Yoga for the Back
I have only done the first set of positions in this book, and felt a real, albeit temporary, relief from back pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderfull
Really beautifull and peaceful book, with many illustrations and explanations. Easy to follow routines, not too complicated descriptions and I can't wait to begin. Useful also the chapter about the meditations.

I suffer from sciatica and piriformis problem. Hope it will be better every day with these exercices. The Unique thing I miss are the cautions, I don't know if all positions are suitable for serveral back problems.(especially for the herniated disc, the positions forward) Maybe you shuld hear some specialist before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really Works!
I don't have severe back pain - or even chronic back pain - but I wake up with a kink every now in then that won't go away or I sit funny at work for hours and then have a headache/neckache by the end of the day that spreads. This book has saved me a trip to the chiropractor twice.I don't use it everyday - just when I'm having achy back problems - I flip through it to find the exercises that seem to work the spots that are bothering me and I gently stretch for 15 to 20 minutes - every time I have tried this - I felt better by the next morning - if I still have some aches I work through the routine again that night - and by the second day- totally gone.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ok
good book for someone who never has seen yoga positions before, otherwise, not detailed enough

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Invaluable Resource
Having read John Sarno and others in the TMS and MBS fields, I must say that this is an excellent book.More comprehensive than David Schechter's workbook. You will save yourself years of issues by simply reading one of Sarno's books, but this book is the next level and I am sure that Dr. Sarno would approve of it.

By the way I am a real dude (not the authors and don't know them), and I have never written a review before. This book is a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars I feel so much better
I have suffered from chronic hip and leg pain for years.I had been to a number of different types of doctors and they have all told me the same thing, "Your MRI is clean, why don't you try physical therapy".After several rounds of therapy I still had found no relief.I then tried a series of injections that did not work. Then I had a rhysotomy where they burned a nerve to stop the pain, again no relief.I have since read Dr. Schubiner's book Unlearn Your Pain and attended his 4 week course.Since doing these things I have implemented what he has taught me into my daily life.I feel better knowing that my pain is caused from stress and learned nerve behavior and that there is nothing "medically" wrong with me. Dr. Schubiner has taught me some techniques for managing the stress and I feel so much better as a result.I enjoy my life more now because I know how tocontrol the pain when it flares up.I would recommend this treatment for anyone who wants to rid of their chronic pain.I am very thankful for this program and the fantastic results.

1-0 out of 5 stars You are paying for a lot of nearly blank pages...
If I could send this book back I would! What a lot of hype for very little useable material. If you want to know about mindfulness practices, go to the people who first noted them and who wrote about it much more eloquently - a genuine Buddhist teacher. The book is a lot of filler pages, indeed nearly blank pages... i.e. "Write a letter to yourself.Dear _____ (rest of the page blank) This is the kind of pretend book that really irks me.This deserves to be a pamphlet or available on a website. It did not deserve my $25 and this much paper.

5-0 out of 5 stars It worked when nothing else would.
I am a cyclist and in 1997 I started having pain in my left shin. I assumed it was an overuse injury, and immediately sought help fromsports medicine doctors, chiropractors, neurologists, osteopaths, podiatrists, physical therapists, etc. In the end I went to over 40 different doctors, specialists, surgeons, therapists and healers. I had multiple MRI's, bone scans, compartment tests, x-rays and nerve tests. No one was able to diagnose, much less heal, my pain. In spite of this I had two surgeries even though the odds that they would help were slim. I eventually gave up cycling and running. The pain spread to my right leg and then began to travel up and down my lower body. I was consigned to working out in a gym, and even that was excruciating. Then I got a new GP who heard my story and immediately recommended Dr. Schubiner. I bought his book, met with him, began working his program, and within a week my pain had diminished by 80-90%. His program has given me tremendous insight into my past and is enabling me to make positive changes for my future. Healing my MBS has been a fascinating and empowering experience. It is a simple program, though it isn't always easy. I'm not 100% pain-free yet, but I know that day is coming soon. Dr. Schubiner is a kind, caring, thoughtful and very accessible physician. I feel blessed to be living in the state where he has his practice. I can't recommend his book and his program highly enough. If any of the stories in these reviews sound like yours, you owe it to yourself to buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Golden Nuggets To Discover
Dr. Howard Schubiner has produced a wonderful self-help work manual for motivated patients who want to solve their mind-body pain issues. The book is a real gem with many insights for people who are confused about their chronic pain issues. A close relative of mine recently took Dr. Schubiner's Mind-Body Course and her stress related (multiple) symptoms are improving rapidly because of her hard work using the mindfulness exercises presented in the work-book. I highly recommend Dr. Schubiner's book to people who need to learn new skills so their mind-body pain will be healed. ... Read more

Your mood, thoughts, and emotions can affect your perception of pain and even your ability to heal. In fact, your past life experiences influence your current physical challenges: "your biography influences your biology." While treatments like medication and physical therapy can be enormously beneficial to the body, to maximize pain relief, it's necessary to take advantage of the mind's healing abilities. The Mindfulness Solution to Pain offers a revolutionary new treatment approach, mindfulness-based chronic pain management, that helps you harness your mind's power to quiet your pain and put you in control. 5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for an MS/Fibro patient
I am writing this review after only completing half of this book, and will update when finished. This book has opened my eyes to a new type of pain medication - meditation.Unlike the rest of the books I have read broaching the subject of pain management (more specifically for me multiple sclerosis/fibromyalgia management), this one has not lost my attention yet, I have thoroughly enjoyed learning something new to try in my never ending cycle which for me personally entails stress from illnesses/life -> Pain from fibromyalgia due to stress -> MS exacerbated by fibromyalgia pain and stress -> pain meds -> more pain meds because the last stopped working, and so on.For the first time in a long time I have new hope of changing things, and truly believe stress is a huge factor to pain, based if nothing else, on pure experience.

I will update my review upon finishing this book, but please take a look if you are in a situation like I am, mindfulness is a solid technique for relief, or if you want mindfulness from another perspective, try reading about dialectical behavioral therapy, it is the same techniques but used for psychologically error-ed thinking (distortions in perception).

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain, Pain Go Away . . .
In this brief book Jackie Gardner-Nix presents us with the idea that we relate to pain as though it is alien to us, and something to be conquered, never realizing that pain is a sign of imbalance in our lives.

Short meditation and mindfulness exercises help us to hone in on the language our bodies are speaking to us through pain, and how to respond constructively in order to bring ourselves back into balance.

RECOMMENDED.

Great little book to help to learn to ease tension and stress .
You will learn to calm the mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Help
This book is calming and soothing in tone and content. It gives a clear path to follow in handling chronic pain and by extension, a lot of life's other challenges. The yoga exercises are not difficult and should be possible for a lot of people to do, depending on their situations. The breathing and meditation sections are great and focus on the concept of coping with your situation. The author gives a total program that can be customized to fit anyone's particular circumstances. I was very interested in her discussion of how the mind treats chronic pain and how changing one's thinking and approach can make pain easier to bear - and also happy to see that there were practical ways to go about it. Clearly written and easy to follow with sufficient photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars A valuable, hopeful resource for those who are suffering
NOTE:I received a free copy of this book to review for the web site Metapsychology Online Reviews; please see a more complete version of my review on that site.

Yoga for Pain Relief offers simple strategies from the mind-body approach of yoga to ease pain--both physical and emotional--and to alleviate suffering. In her Introduction, author Kelly McGonigal describes how pain itself is a mind-body experience; she notes that chronic pain in particular is a learned response.Through the regular practice of yoga strategies, including breathing techniques, befriending the body, physical exercises, and relaxation, McGonigal maintains that one can attain greater control over one's mind and body both to increase comfort and to decrease suffering.

McGonigal begins by providing an overview of the pain response. She then introduces some basic ideas from the yogic tradition that will facilitate further discussion of the yoga healing practices. These concepts are very straightforward, such as the importance of the breath and the focus on the experience of inner joy as part of the practice. At this point, McGonigal is ready to begin reviewing some actual healing practices, starting in Chapter 3 with Breath.Throughout the practice segments of the book, there are detailed descriptions of how to perform the various exercises accompanied by clear, helpful black-and-white photos of McGonigal and other models demonstrating the movements. Also, at the end of every yoga practice chapter, McGonigal includes a "Putting it All Together" section which offers suggestions for how to use the exercises/practices in different ways.

The next chapter focuses on Befriending the Body, or moving from a more adversarial relationship with oneself and one's pain to one of compassion and acceptance. For the physical exercises, McGonigal's emphasis is always on healing. She presents gentle asana (held postures) and vinyasa (movements combined with breath), many of which are performed on the floor or can be modified with use of a chair. After introducing a basic pose sequence which can be combined in many different ways, McGonigal moves on to restorative postures. These poses require props to support the body and to allow for a more complete relaxation experience. The final yoga practice chapter focuses on Meditation. As with the previous chapters, McGonigal offers several different options for establishing a meditation practice and explains each in detail.

In the final chapter of the book, McGonigal offers suggestions for developing a personal yoga program.I especially liked her encouragement to establish a "homecoming" practice--that is, choosing just one simple exercise from the book that you will commit to practicing daily. She provides various suggestions for how to incorporate the exercises from the preceding chapters into different types of practices. In addition, McGonigal notes how the short personal vignettes from her students which appear throughout the book offer examples of various yoga rituals.McGonigal concludes the book with a Resources chapter offering information on books, music, DVDs, and other resources for people with pain.

For those who are suffering from chronic pain, this book is an excellent, hopeful resource.McGonigal herself is not only a psychology, yoga, and meditation instructor but also a former chronic pain sufferer. When practiced regularly--perhaps in as little as 15 minutes per day--these easy-to-use, gentle yoga techniques can give you the tools to manage your pain and to reduce your suffering.Dr. McGonigal has written a book that is clear, well-researched, easy-to-understand, and potentially extremely valuable, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hands-down best book on this topic
yoga for pain relief is hands-down the best guidebook written on the topic of yoga and chronic pain. It is practical, compassionate, science-based and easy to understand. This is Yoga; this is science; and best of all, this is accessible to people who do not know yoga.
Three specific groups of people should read this book - people with chronic pain, practitioners who treat people in pain, and all Yoga teachers. Kelly's expertise and experiences allow her to provide hope and a realistic view that improvements are possible. Her book offers compassionate guidance, and makes it clear that chronic pain is a complex multidimensional problem requiring much more than a recipe approach or modifications of yoga postures. Many of the simple to perform techniques she describes are effectively used in multidisciplinary pain management settings. Even people with severe pain will find some assistance from this guidebook. With over 20% of the North American population reporting chronic pain, there is a huge need for greater understanding of pain self-management and the role Yoga can play in recovery.
I recommend yoga for pain relief to my patients and students for the following reasons:
* The instructions are simple and easy to follow, including powerful breathing, body awareness, relaxation and meditation techniques.
* There are no recipes provided.
* The guidance includes many aspects of Yoga, rather than a biomechanical focus on Yoga postures as physical therapy.
* Her `five guidelines for movements that heal' answer an important question about how to move in the face of ongoing pain.
* The clarity that some techniques are for immediate pain relief and others are for long last benefits.
* The integration of real-person stories to highlight key aspects of recovery from pain.
* Comments such as, "Your goal is create peace of mind even in poses that create strong sensations of stretch or require effort to hold". The same goal of course applies when one is at the edge of increased pain.

Don't be misled by the title of this book. It teaches as much about chronic pain, pain self-management and the current science of pain as it does about Yoga. There is even a citation list for those interested in delving further into the science behind Yoga practices for people in pain.
Like all guide books, you may find the best results by working with a practitioner who understands Yoga and understand chronic pain. If you cannot locate one, don't let that stop you from slowly working through these techniques. Give them enough of your attention and enough practice and they will help you towards less pain, better movement and improved quality of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hitting a sweat spot for
This is a book that I would recommended to anyone who wants to the bottom line on what you can get from yoga/meditation. The book hits a kind of "sweat spot:" this is yoga's entry point with the minimal initial physical investment, the lowest opportunity cost and the biggest pay-off. You don't have to get in shape, build up your aerobic capacity, muscular strength and flexibility before seeing results. You don't even need to know what's wrong with you for yoga to do you some good.

The book is extraordinarily accessible: No jargon, either from the Sanskrit or from the academic/scientific lingua franca, no intellectual arrogance, no magical incantation, no gateway to esoteric wisdom, no complicated sequences of poses. Within the first 25 pages (out of 183 pp#, she's giving you easy routines to start using what's she teaching, in this case, observing your breath.

Five years ago, I took an e-mail/online course from Kelly, and I've followed her path since then so I am not impartial. One of the things that Kelly said five years ago has stayed with me and she repeats it in the book: people seek out yoga because they are suffering, either physically, psychologically or spiritually. Human suffering is a great motivator and a constant of human existence. The book's virtue is simplifying yoga down to a concise, clear message: Relieve your suffering; start with these easy steps. If Patanjali #an ancient sage who recorded the first thesis on yoga in India) had written like Kelly, yoga would have taken over the world (kidding -- a little).

Kelly also understands the value of personal narrative alongside the findings of randomized, blind control experiments, and she has included compelling stories of people impacted by yoga throughout the book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lukewarm Recommendation.
The sibling duo of Abigail and Jake aka the Great One and the Pain along with their cat Fluzzy narrate the compilation of stories by Judy Blume. In class Jake makes a mistake reading and is so embarrassed he vows never to read out loud again. Abigail argues with a classmate over a story her friend steals from her. Abigail and Jake butt heads and come together in a way all siblings can relate.
The stories are fraught with the high emotions of the very young. Blume accurately portrays the actions, thoughts and feelings of the youngsters. She uses a vocabulary suitable for beginning readers.

The negative I found was the over usage of he said/she said. It made the prose monotonous and predictable. I listened to the book and cannot comment on the art work. My review and ranking are based solely on the text.
Would have givena ranking of 3.5 stars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Emotion counts!
It's hard to believe that emotion can have such a huge role in back pain, when we usually attribute it to physical causes - but this book makes it easy to apply EFT in ways that get to the core of the pain. I find I'm using the techniques on other 'painful' areas of my life too, with great results. Being a do-it-yourself sort of person, I love EFT and I'm finding this book is extending my skills and effectiveness.

5-0 out of 5 stars EFT for Back Pain -- a wonderfully helpful book
Gary Craig's book EFT for Back Pain more than lives up to its description.I have shared several ideas from the book with others, and they were inspired to buy the book themselves. I am using quite a few suggestions, and I very seldom experience back pain any more. Before using the suggestions, I had quite a lot of lower back pain and I took pain pills. Now I can keep going on various projects without experiencing any pain. It's wonderful to be pain free.

5-0 out of 5 stars EFT For Back Pain
My sister swears by EFT.I have not used it too much yet but feel it does contain important information.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent as everything from Gary Craig
This little book is just excellent. Not a single word too much. I know all the EFT teaching DVDs from Gary and am very impressed by this material, his way of teaching and the compassionate, clear and humourous way of treating with EFT on a high standard. The healings a striking. Being a professional I highly recommend his book about backpain both for clients and for professionals. It illustrates the different backgrounds of backpains and why they might stay for a long time. The best of all: The healing results are often very quick, profound and lasting once you discovered the source.
I appreciate the fact that Gary writes about different special subjects as back pain.

EFT is easy to do, easy to understand and yet there is so much to discover about our emotions, thoughtforms, "writings on the walls", unconscious influences on our (poor) body which has to go with whatever we think and feel...

I hope to see more of these little wonderful books! I like his way of writing and putting his profound experience and open mindedness into words. Just well done! Thank you, Gary.

I have just spent the last five months of my life recovering from a back injury caused by a car accident. The pain was so excruciating; I've lost 31 pounds.Prior to the accident, I was very active, belonging to two gyms; I would exercise from one to three times a day. Now, I feel like a shell of myself, and am still having pain while undergoing rounds of painful epidural injections.

I was so excited to have the opportunity to read "EFT for Back Pain," that I did it in one sitting.I am not supposed to sit for more than 20 minutes at a time, so I broke the rules for this one.I have to say that it was well worth it.I am so excited and finally have hope that I will be able to fully escape the pain.Gary Craig offers steps for a Quick Start method early in the book. I am glad that he did this, because it allowed me to sample this type of treatment.I immediately saw some improvement with pain reduction.

EFT stands for Emotional Freedom Techniques.Craig states "the cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body's energy system."EFT techniques can free you from back pain, and other ailments, while at the same time help you heal emotionally. This will enable us all to have a better quality of life.He reports that 80% of cases find relief - 80% is a very significant number to me, especially if I can represent one of those percents!

EFT is also referred to as Emotional Acupuncture.Key acupuncture points are used, with tapping techniques rather than needles. That sounds wonderful to me!EFT is unique in that it addresses the causes, not the symptoms.Using these techniques can eliminate the need for drugs or other medical interventions, which from my personal experience can be very painful. It also can be used to help heal other ailments.

Even though I haven't gone further than the Quick Start yet, I really gained a lot of personal insight into how my emotions can be contributing to my pain, and how I might also sabotage myself with negative thoughts. While I read the case examples and the affirmation examples, the insight I gained was very healing.Even though I wasn't doing the tapping techniques, as I was reading, the phrases offered as examples were very healing to read when they applied to me.

Further information is available on the author's website. He includes a downloadable manual and information about accessing DVDs.I highly recommend "EFT for Back Pain" by Gary Craig to people who are suffering from either chronic or acute physical and or emotional pain.It can also be used by people who are living or working with others who fit into this category.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book
I bought this upon the recommendation of my physical therapist. I thought I had known alot about fibromyalgia (even though there is little known about it). It really made me understand the 'why' and 'how' things interrelated to my condition. I would also recommend this. The book is written in a way that is easy to understand. I appreciate the way the book is organized into sections as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Educating your health care providers
This is a little more indepth look at the answers to what was in The Fibromyalgia Advocate. It to is a must read for both people with Fibromyalgia and a manditory read for all health care providers.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ABSOLUTE best information written on FM &CMP!!!
This is very surely a survival manual in every sense of the word!!

I own Version 1 of this book and also own this updated version. When I was newly diagnosed (1994) with both Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain, there were few books on the subjects out.The ones that were out were either poorly written or didn't give me any idea on what I could do to help myself.Devin Starlanyl, through her many years of medical practice and also being a patient suffering with both of these conditions, made use of EVERY page in this book to share ways to cope on a daily basis. She has shared ways to empower others when meeting with doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists and other members of the medical community. She addresses co-conditions which can exacerbate or imitate FM & CMP and answers a lot of questions one might not ask their doctor. All this is done in an easy to read and understand manner.

Through the many years I have owned these two manuals and her Physician's Advocate manual, I have turned to them COUNTLESS times and have dog-eared the pages. I have also lent them out time and time again with the end result of the borrowers purchasing their own! They are the fist books I recommend to anyone who is newly diagnosed.Don't waste time reading and searching for every Fibro book out there, all you need are these!!

You will never be sorry!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fibromyalgia and Chronic Myofascial Pain
I purchased this book for a friend that was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia. I have suffered myself and 10 years ago found this book was the most complete, had the best advice of any of the books I read trying to understand and get help with the pain and fatigue.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific amount of information on both subjects
Very detailed and easy to read.Loads of information, condensed in one place, so you don't have to do so many different web searches. If you don't understand the subject by time you have finished reading this book, you are having brain fog. Well worth the money. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars My niece loves it
This was a birthday gift for my niece, who just started reading her first chapter books. She told me she loves this series and was excited to own her own copy of the first book as well as the additional chapter book I got her later in the series.

4-0 out of 5 stars True to life sibling dynamics
My 5 year old simply loved reading (yes she reads several grades above) about Abigail and Jake, the siblings who complement and bristle against each other in a funny and heart-warming way.My daughter laughs every few pages as many humorous scenes are aptly described and well illustrated. You will hear separate alternating perspectives from the brother and the sister as they each face their own challenges. The audiobook narrators (in the audiobook version) do a good job in portraying the siblings, lending a lightness to the drama.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soupy Saturdays with the Pain and the Great One
Our grandsons are 8 and 6 and love Judy Blume. They laugh and always look forward to the next chapter. Young boys always try to think of little pranks to do and these books just peak their imagination.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stories for Children Magazine 4 Star Review
This book is packed with seven funny, truthfully revealing peeks at the way a sister and brother get along. You'll laugh with the Great One as she tricks the Pain into getting his hair cut. You'll roll your eyes as the Great One tries to pretend she can ride a bike, while the Pain points out how she always avoids getting on her bike. But the fun doesn't stop there. No--you'll enjoy a birthday party, play soccer, and much more with this sister and brother team. Only Judy Blume can capture the humor of what it's like growing up with siblings.

You'll also be entertained by the delightful and thought provoking illustrations by none other than James Stevenson.

Being any only child won't stop anyone from enjoying this book, after all don't you have friends whose brothers and sisters bug you when you go over to play? We all have been bugged, followed, tricked, and mimicked by younger bothers or sisters of our own or friends and with that in mind . . . I say this book is one book the whole family can enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Bluming" Wonderful
Does Judy Blume write anything that isn't good? If so I've not read it.I read her books as a kid and I'm thrilled to see my nine year old enjoying her work. This one is great for those with younger siblings. It suggests that we really can find good qualities in little brothers/sisters.A great summer read for 2-4th grade. ... Read more

Product Description
Trigger point therapy is one of the most intriguing and fastest-growing bodywork styles in the world. Medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists are all beginning to use this technique to relieve formerly undiagnosable muscle and joint pain—conditions that studies have shown to be the cause of nearly 25 percent of all doctor visits. The technique involves applying short, repeated massage strokes to trigger points, tiny contraction knots in muscle tissue where restricted circulation and lack of oxygen cause referred pain. Trigger points create pain throughout the body in predictable patterns characteristic to each muscle, producing discomfort ranging from mild to severe. Trigger point massage increases circulation and oxygenation in the area and often produces instant relief. This dynamic technique has made a huge impact among health professionals and the public alike, becoming an overnight classic in the field of pain relief. The book has sold over 220,000 copies since the release of the first edition in 2001. The second edition is a complete update and includes a new chapter specifically for massage professionals, as well as a chapter on systematic muscle relaxation techniques that can reinforce the therapeutic power of trigger point work.Amazon.com Review
The first edition of this workbook is regarded as a classic in its field, and was the first book to introduce trigger point therapy to the general public as a self-care tool for alleviating chronic pain caused by a variety of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, muscle ache, and repetitive strain injuries. As the author makes clear, all such conditions are related to lack of oxygen in exhausted or injured muscle tissue. Trigger point therapyhas been used for decades by doctors, pain specialists, and massage therapists to quickly stimulate the flow of oxygen and promote rapid pain reduction. This book makes the same techniques available to the general public with instructions that are easy to follow, and abetted by an extensive collection of charts and corresponding illustrations.

The author’s interest in trigger point therapy began when he used it to successfully treat his frozen shoulder. Since that time, he has dedicated himself to teaching others the same techniques. That dedication is obvious throughout his writing and the care he takes to make the therapy understandable to the lay public. Also included in this new edition is updated information that should be of great interest to pain specialists and bodyworkers, as well as useful instruction in a variety of relaxation techniques. Overall, this book is an excellent self-care resource for anyone interested in pain relief.--Larry Trivieri Jr. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
I cannot overemphasize how much this book has helped me.I suffered from chronic upper back, arm, and hand pain for years and went to countless doctors, physical therapists, occupational therapists, etc.I was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic myofascial pain syndrome, you name it... basically, I got the run-around that most people in chronic pain get, with little relief. The only thing that I found helped me was deep-tissue massage of my upper back, although this didn't do much for my arm and hand pain. After reading a bunch of books myself about chronic myofascial pain and its origins, I ran across this book and decided to give it a try.WOW.Literally, within two days, I was completely -- I mean completely -- free of pain.It was unbelievable. It turns out that my problems were all caused by trigger points in the scalene muscles of my neck, which I could resolve by simply massaging them a couple of times a day.I can't believe no one told me this before.Anyway, if you're in chronic pain, you should buy this book -- it definitely can't hurt, and it might be miraculous!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly needed book
It is a book that will help any one that read it, to be rid of many pains and orthopedic conditions that confuse doctors. Many operations will be avoided if people will have the info that this book contains. It was a great help for me and many others that I helped with info from this book. It is WORTH every penny !!!!!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Very detailed; requires highly motivated individual
Very detailed, informative book. I appreciate the author's passion and knowledge on the subject. She offers a real solution for what modern medicine sees as a disease that can only be medicated away. However, you must have some motivation to apply these techniques on yourself. Don't get discouraged if you're VERY sore the next day as I was.

5-0 out of 5 stars healing
I am happy to share with the world the amazing benefits of healing I have derived from applying the information and therapies within the covers of this amazing book. I would definitly recommend anyone suffering from constant pain in the arm or back or anywhere externally. It feels muscular or like a nerve pain.Anyway I no longer suffer, Praise God, for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I feel alive again
I love this book.I was suffering from a chronic neck pain that affected my everyday life.I could no longer exercise and was in constant pain. After visiting an orthopedic doctor, I was told that I had arthritis in my neck and advised to do exercises to improve my range of motion. After weeks of this, and there was some improvement, I was then told there was nothing more I could do, and would have to live with this. I was not willing to live my life like this - I was much too active.I told my brother and he recommended this book and described how it changed his life.He lent me the book and I immediately read and was hooked.I have been practicing what I read and had to have the book for myself. It is a great reference book.I am back to exercising again and my pain has subsided. When it flares up, I immediately go back to the therapy and in no time, I find relief. Thanks for writing such a great, easy to understand book that has given me a greater appreciation of alternative methods that work. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful, but mostly Sarno had said it all before him.
To his credit, the author (briefly) acknowledges Dr. Sarno's pioneering contribution to understanding chronic back pain and related ailments. However, this book mostly paraphrases what Sarno had already written about in his three books on the subject. Brady substitutes his own terminology: where Sarno talks about TMS (Tension Myositis Syndrome)Brady calls it AOS (Autonomic Overload Syndrome). This may suggest that he (Brady) discovered a new disorder, but it is the old TMS, just now with a different name.

The only part of the book that is actually useful (because it goes beyond what Sarno talks about) is the section that describes a specific protocol of exercises that the patient might follow to try and overcome the pain. These exercises are simple enough that anyone would be able to do them with no other assistance than the book itself and thus are probably worth buying the book just for these exercises. Still, I would recommend reading Sarno first.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go for it !
I had back surgery for a herniated disc L4-L5 two years ago which helped the leg pain however I constantly had low back pain. I often heard people say to me " face it your back will be always a weak point in your life and that I had to get used to the idea " I avoided going to restaurants andlong distance trips , certain exercises , swimming etc...I bought both books from Sarno and Brady and just by reading my pain was gone , I have not experienced any back pain ever since. I go out and enjoy life and have started playing golf again. I don't know why the government and health authorities don't promote these books , it will save millions of dollars on medication and therapies.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Truth about Chronic Pain--read it and see for yourself
I was healed of back pain blamed on a herniated disc when I applied what I learned from Dr. John Sarno, who is Dr. Brady's mentor. Came across this book at the library as I was checking out other mind/body books.
If you are in pain and tired of the usual NSAIDS, physical therapy, etc. which do not work for you, read this book and apply it. Stress and how it affects the body is finally newsworthy; many physical conditions are explored in this book and are healed when applying these principles. Yes, it takes work and isn't as easy as taking a pill. But it's so worth having your life back without pain. I also like that Dr. Brady acknowledges the spiritual factor with the mind & body. Some may not care for that.
Are you a perfectionist? People-pleaser? One who does not show emotion and just "stuffs" everything? Yes, your personality can be causing your pain. Examining your life and doing some in-depth writing about yourself and situations is very relieving. The book has very good questions to ponder for self-examination. What do you have to lose but some emotional trash you've carried around--and your pain?
If you apply it, it will work for you too. It is time for people to embrace the mind and body together and stop treating them separately. Emotional health really does equal physical health. Oh, did I mention the high success rate from using this method?
There is a 20/20 clip where John Stossel explains this method and has himself been healed of chronic back pain by using the same principles.
True, it is not widely believed that our emotions can cause us physical pain; I do hope this type of information will get "out there" so more people will be able to be healed and enjoy their life. Those who learn about this and have it work wonders for them will want to shout it from the rooftops (like me).
I do realize that not everyone will accept that their emotions cause physical pain; we are very conditioned with the medical (physical) mindset. You can change that if you want to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pain Free for Life
I read this book both as a bit of a skeptic and with an open mind.I have been pleasantly surprised. It is a well-written, very informative book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read for Chronic Pain Patients

1-0 out of 5 stars Simply awful...
It's readily apparent the authors were busy in their clinical careers... so much so that they neglected to spend any time proofreading this book. It's a typical "write some random questions and we'll call it a board review book to make ourselves famous" book by physicians. There are numerous wrong answers to simplistic and redundant questions. There are so many wrong answers that, as one reviewer mentioned, they are often easy to spot; however, in the course of 800+ questions, do you really want to have to recheck answers in textbooks and other sources to verify their accuracy?I didn't appreciate it and wished I had known this prior to using this.In spite of this book, I easily passed the pain boards.Final words of advice: 1. Use a different pain review book(but alas, they all have their faults) and 2. You're better off reading a pain textbook and simple MRI book for the pain boards if you have the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK FOR PAIN MEDICINE REVIEW !!!!
I recently took the ABA and the ABPM exams. I found the book extremely useful. In fact some of the material is socomprehensively written that I have been referring it to every so often. The questions cover a broad range of topics and key words. The explanations are concise and to the point. The book is good practice if you are preparing for any of the exams. It covers any topics or keywords you may have missed. I have been recommending the book to all my colleagues who are planning on taking the exams.

I would also recommend trying this website for some great questions and review: [...]

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful for Board Review
I recently took the American Board of Pain Medicine recertification exam.I found this book to be very helpful. It has a great deal of good information covering all aspects of pain medicine. When I sat done to take the test I saw question after question regarding concepts that I had just studied from the book.I feel like I did well on the test, and that using this study guide contributed significantly. One of the best benefits was that I was able to move through the questions more quickly, because I had just seen that concept or answered a similar question in the days leading up to the exam. The information in the discussion of the answers is detailed and helpful. The topics covered are representative of the information covered in the test. The discussions often cover much more than the one or two concepts that a given question is designed to test. The questions are generally well-written, although in my ebook format I did find multiple questions with the wrong answer indicated. It was not difficult to detect an error, or to find information to confirm an answer was wrong. The book is very valuable in spite of the editing or proof-reading errors that created the wrong answers.

2-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't anyone proof read anymore?
I have not been through the entire book as of yet but there seem to be some mistakes. The questions are pretty easy. ... Read more

This book arrived in great condition and the price was fantastic! As for the content, I have decided this Dr. has only one tune...vegetarianism and preferably vegan.Been there and done that for 13 years!!!I ended up with problems with my thyroid and an excess of estrogen from my diet that has continued to complicate health issues to this day.I think much of the research is right on,but thebottom line conclusion is not for everybody and I don't feel he gives or leaves the reader with alternatives to his drastic approach.Would I recommend it...yes!!!...if only for the research information to be gleaned and applied as one sees fit.

Product Description

“Oh, yes,” a retired NVA officer matter-of-factly declared to former U.S. Marine Otto J. Lehrack. “In the Que Son Valley in 1967, we killed more Americans than at any time or place during the war.” Road of 10,000 Pains, which takes its name from The Iliad, is an epic oral history of Vietnam's bloodiest campaign, fought for seven months in a series of battles, most within four miles of each other, along Route 534. In October 1967, orders came down to the 2nd North Vietnamese Army Division commanding them to join with local Viet Cong units and seize the city of Da Nang in the coming Tet Offensive. When the time came, the division was so battered from its seven-month campaign in the Que Son Valley that it failed to carry out its mission. Only one platoon was to make it inside the city limits of Da Nang. Had it not been for the violent struggles in the valley, Da Nang may have suffered the same fate as the city of Hue.

This book is very painful to read. It was assigned to me as a textbook for an art class I took at University and I don't think I would have read it otherwise.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a 'must have' for beginners learning perspective drawing
For a class assignment, I was to do a one point perspective drawing.Without having any experience with perspective drawing, I found it intimidating. However, I came across "Perspective Without Pain" by Phil Metzger. His Step-by-Step approach made more sense to me and as a result I did well on my drawing. The book pointed out otherwise difficult concepts, and made them easier to understand.I would recommend this book to anyone but particularly to a beginner because there are examples and explanations through out the book that are easy to follow.

If you have chronic or acute pain, I recommend this book and CD on using mindful meditation to address pain. It's a short book of less than 100 pages, but every word counts!I've reread each section many times, and the entire book a couple of times each year. And the CD is really helpful with meditation.

I've always believed getting over pain meant pushing the pain away as though it were a foreign object. But when the pain isn't going to go away, learning to accept it as a part of me was the first step to reducing the pain level. When nothing else has helped -- even drugs -- the skills I learned from this book have worked to help me manage my pain, and in other ways of my life as well.

So, if you're open to trying a gentle, inner-directed approach to managing pain -- or possibly stopping your pain altogether, I urge you to read this book. You'll be glad you did.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good material for those in pain....
Shinzen Young is a meditation teacher who has been around for a long time.Much of his work is in the area of transforming emotions and pain. This combination book and CD is useful for those who want to get more of a feeling of control around pain.

Specifically, this book teaches you the relationship between attention and pain, softening around pain and having a different experience of it through training the mind to hold it differently. While it won't take the place of morphine, it will certainly help people in pain to live with it more easily. It will also help them to reduce their anxiety around pain, which aggravates the subjective experience of pain.

I am no stranger to pain having gone through a back, neck and wrist surgery.I teach meditation myself and I have graduate education in biology, biochemistry and psychology.I feel I am in a good position to judge the merits of the book and the book certainly has many merits as does the CDs.If you are interested in an introduction to several types of meditation, you might also like The Beginner's Guide to Meditation. If you are quite serious about meditation, you can look at a variety of references on my listmania lists which appear on my profile.

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointed
The 1997 Sounds True cassette tape version is so much better than this watered-down, tired-sounding CD and book. After using the taped version, which has four longish guided meditations and is so inspiring and helpful, the very brief guidance for the meditations on the CD version gives the impression that the author became bored or burnt out with teaching. I will continue to use the the cassette tapes and will throw out the more recent CD and book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book
Shinzen's meditations on pain have changed my life.I deal with pain on a regular basis and I use Shinzen's meditations all the time.I love this book so much I have bought many copies to give away as gifts.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ANYONE DEALING WITH PAIN. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone with habitual soreness.
I bought this book after being virtually crippled by a stress in my heel. I researched for weeks trying to figure out how to help this issue I had (I was unable to push off with my right foot when walking). I found this book on google books and began reading about it. I found it interesting because of it's knowledge of fascial tissue (yes fascial not facial). If you have never heard of fascial tissue this book is a must read to understand how pain can be relative. I am 21 years old and have had chronic sore knees for the past 3 years. I use to manage the pain with otc pain medicine like Ibuprofen. I was never happy to live on something like ibuprofen but I couldn't figure out any other options. This book begins by explaining that if my knees hurt chances are its not the knees, but somewhere in my facial line there is tightness causing a pull on my knees which causes pain there. I did some of the quadriceps stretches and BAM no more knee pain! I also have a very sore achy back from working at a desk and lifting weights. The author has a detailed walk thru of back stretches to do to correct that (he even explains which ones to do if you are a desk worker). The found the author to be credible as he is a former body building (IFBB certified) and also a Physical Therapist.

A few reviewers have made comments about the supplements he recommends. If you read about those supplements they are very tolerated by the body. If you are timid about knowing what to buy you can get everything he recommends inside of the Animal Flex Pack
http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Nutrition-Animal-Flex-pckts/dp/B000HNHDRI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287512912&sr=8-1
Don't be put off from it because it's marketed to body builders, it is just joint supplements, literally everything this book recommends short of fish oil.

I have implemented his water drinking recommendations, and the daily fish oil and that alone has cured most of my constant pains (sore tired back, achy knees, tired feet). Its funny how dehydration can cause so many pains. For me this book was worth hundreds of dollars in the knowledge I gained from it, and the pain it has saved me from. I hope this book becomes more well known because I think it would save so many people from so many daily aches and pains.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love it - but should include trigger point release before the stretches
I bought this book because my business is to try to help people feel better from fibromyalgia[...].I reversed fibromyalgia in my body over the course of 6 years with techniques similar to the ones in this book, and when I saw what this man had to say had to say about fascia, I had to buy this book.

I like the stretches, although many of them seem overly complicated and too aggressive for the beginning stretcher.

I also think that self trigger point therapy before the stretches would greatly enhance them and make injury less likely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good
I started having pretty bad hip and back pain about 18 months ago (I am 45 years old now), no idea why, but it was really debilitating and made me feel like I was 85 years old. Couldn't play basketball anymore or even sit in my desk chair for very long. This book definitely requires you to pay attention to the detail of what he is asking you to do, but I was in so much pain I did it, and I really think it is effective. He wants you to take a whole lot of supplements, and I've been taking everything he suggested for months now. THEN you do his stretching exercises, and when I do, I feel a TON better. I just need to make myself do them more often :)I also started doing Pilates, and went to a "structural integration" (a.k.a. "Rolfing") specialist, and I think it is all helping. Thank goodness, because I needed it. Thank you Ming, great book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Be Careful
I have been suffering with shoulder and neck pain for about three years now. When I saw this book I thought, 'oh finally a cure for me.'Not so.I gave the book two stars because the advice on supplements and drinking water is good.Unfortunately, the cruxt of the book, the 'stretches' were very bad for me.I followed the instructions very carefully and reinjured myself and hurt my other shoulder in the mean time.I am sure the author studied his theories, and may have had some success with his 'stretches', but for me they were more like tortures. They were painful, difficult to get into postion for, and did me far more harm than good. The reason for this review is to serve as a warning that this book may not be for everyone.I get tired of physical therapists with books claiming that they can help 'most' conditions.I thought surely I must fall into someone's 'most' population. Not so with this book.I have been a yoga teacher for many years and believe I may have injured myself with over stretching. These 'stretches' are very reminescent of over stretching muscles to me.The neck position in the book seems counter productive to protecting the neck in a stretch. It leaves your neck very vulnerable in the supine positions.Ok nuff said, just don't buy these concepts hook line and sinker. This book is definitely not for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a pain cure, a way to prevent it too!
This book is very well written and the information contained within is priceless.

This is a comprehensive guide to physical well-being, focusing on nutrition and essentially a way to self-administer ART(Active Release Techniques). ART techniques are used worldwide for treating everyone from professional athletes to sedentary people with joint and muscle pain.

All of the info is based in solid science and is well researched. The reviewer Eugenia below would ease her fears by doing a little more research, as the supplements and their effects are all well documented. Just a quick search on PubMed will show that. Additionally, an anti-inflammatory diet has been shown to help relieve other inflammatory diseases such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, allergies, and more. "The Inflammation Syndrome" by Jack Challem expands on this, providing tons of evidence and more in-depth information on nutrition than provided in this book.

The book is both highly educational and practical. Towards the end there are programs outlined for treating specific areas of pain. Everything from knee, shoulder and lower back to hands and feet are included. Most exercises and stretches include your entire body, so not just those target areas, but your entire body will feel and work better if you follow Ming's advice.

I have used the information in this book to recover from a necessary shoulder surgery well ahead of schedule and also relieve knee pain from an two year old injury. I am a 22 year old athlete involved in contact sports and will continue to use Ming's techniques to stay injury and pain free from now on. I am recommended this book to every athlete I know, and have already started treating my 84 year old grandma's arthritis.

I have read other books on the subject and done tons of research online. This book contains excellent information not available anywhere else, and I highly recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars interesting / interessant
English: The information in this book ist proofed by research. But there are only few exercises (3 exercises + variations) which in my opinion every physiotherapist uses in every day practice.

3-0 out of 5 stars So-so...
This book can be summarized in one paragraph, "The multifidus muscle runs up the spine and the part that's at waist level *may* be causing your back pain. To strengthen, start on all fours and extend your right leg and left arm horizontally. Hold for ones second then extend the left leg and right arm for one second. Repeat twenty times every other day. For further strengthening, add 1-5 lb. ankle weights." There, I just saved you 12 bucks! Everything else in the book is feel-good fluff or general information which may or may not have merit but you're interested in curing your back pain and not in generalities, right? The author could have at least thrown in a few nice diagrams, the ones in the book are so simple and amateurish that I'd be embarrassed to put them in a book I'd written.

2-0 out of 5 stars The Solution???
I don't think some of the exercises illustrated in this book are appropriate for all patients, especially some of those with lumbar radiculopathy (or spinal stenosis).Exercises #4 and 5# involve a patient lying in prone (on stomach) and have them perform alternating lower extremity or upper/lower extremity lifts. Many individuals attempting #4-5 exercises at home will likely go into lumbar extension (especially if they forgo the pillow under their pelvis), which will close down the foraminal openings where the nerve roots exit.If this individual has an inflammed nerve root, he or she will likely experience an increase in radicular symptoms (numbness and tingling).

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Scientific Perspective
I'm a yoga teacher that deals with a lot of clients with back issues. The author of this book doesn't say anything about yoga but his approach is easily adapted.

I really appreciated his mixture of scientific research with personal anecdote. His exercises are easily integrated into a yoga routine.

I was surprised though that he doesn't mention laying on your back and pushing the lower back into the ground as a possible multifidus-strengthening exercise.I've found this to be very effective and easily adjusted by using a small towel under the back to provide resistence.

Also, I purchased a "Stabilizer" which is a biofeedback device that measures the amount of pressure one is excerting. This works great with the laying on your back exercise I describe above.

The author's additional section about how to sit, etc. was a nice touch.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
This was a disappointing purchase.Written for a 3 year old reading level, the 'book' was mostly filler - useless stories and personal anecdotes.

The only useful information could have been presented in a 3 page brochure. There were 4 versions of the same exercise, with an embarrassing display of graphics.

The author should stick to his first profession.

Product Description
Chronic pain has a multitude of causes, many of which are not well understood or effectively treated by medical therapies.Individuals with chronic pain often report that pain interferes with their ability to engage in occupational, social, or recreational activities. Sufferers' inability to engage in these everyday activities may contribute to increased isolation, negative mood and physical deconditioning, which in turn can contribute to their experience of pain.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has been proven effective at managing various chronic pain conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, chronic back pain, and tension/migraine headache. The CBT treatment engages patients in an active coping process aimed at changing maladaptive thoughts and behaviors that can serve to maintain and exacerbate the experience of chronic pain. Overcoming Chronic Pain, Therapist Guide instills all of these empirically validated treatments into one comprehensive, convenient volume that no clinician can do without. By presenting the basic, proven-effective CBT methods used in each treatment, such as stress management, sleep hygiene, relaxation therapy and cognitive restructuring, this guide can be used to treat all chronic pain conditions with success.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good self-help book for chronic pain
I am a clinical psychologist working in a multidisciplinary pain treatment clinic. I also have chronic pain.I have found four self-help books (see my other reviews) that I currently recommend to patients. This is one of them. This is a great pain coping resources self-help book.

Like other good pain coping self-help books (e.g., "Managing Your Pain Before It Mangers You," by Margaret Caudill, MD, PhD, "The Pain Survival Guide," By Dennis Turk, PhD and "Hypnotize Yourself Out of Pain Now!", by Bruch Eimer, PhD), it does an effective job of covering the range of what has been learned on helping chronic pain patients help themselves. Its chapters are structured effectively with many good self-help tools/exercises.It is cognitive behavioral in focus and I would say that its only limitations are that it somewhat neglects interpersonal factors in pain. Also, it does not cover self-hypnosis, though it does cover imagery. If you are looking for self-help help with chronic pain, I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars an interesting introduction to the psychology of managing chronic pain
The "Treatments that Work" series is designed for clinicians; it is not meant to be a self-help resource for lay readers. This volume offers an 11-session cognitive-behavioral treatment model to support those who must learn to cope with the challenge of chronic pain.

Sessions are as follows:
1.Education on Chronic Pain
2.Theories of Pain and Diaphragmatic Breathing
3.Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Visual Imagery
4.Automatic Thoughts and Pain
5.Cognitive Restructuring
6.Stress Management
7.Time-based Pacing
8.Pleasant Activity Scheduling
9.Anger Management
10. Sleep Hygiene
11. Relapse Prevention and Flare-Up Planning

Not a substitute for medical assessment and management, but an evidence-based supportive treatment model which can be readily implemented by CBT-trained clinicians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helpful and Highly Recommended
A much needed resource for mentoring, counseling, and leading women in pain. Bev Hislop places, as first priority, the needs of women in pain and the questions they often ask. Second, she informs the pastor, leader, and friend on what he/she needs to know to become a loving, understanding, and empathetic presence in their lives. She also demonstrates, through her own shepherding experiences, how to walk along-side and keep Christ in the midst. I found the helpful "dos and don'ts" in the professional chapters to be very insightful, not only for leading women in pain, but also for questions that arise in small group and retreat settings. Information on "The three Levels of Forgiveness" and "What Forgiveness is Not" (in section II), has been extremely beneficial in my recent shepherding experiences. I am thankful for Bev Hislop's first hand knowledge as a professional shepherd, as well as other professionals who shared their knowledge of specific kinds of pain that can overshadow the mind, body and spirit of women. This book is a definite resource and reminder to effective shepherding that can be useful many times over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical resource for shepherding women in pain
Bev's book, Shepheding Women in Pain, is a very practical and helpful resource. This book provides helpful insights into women who are experiencing depression, divorce, addiction, abuse, pornography, terminal illness, and many other topics that have brought pain into women's lives.Bev chose to incorporate the expertise from several professionals in their respective fields to shed light in how to come alongside and shepherd a woman in pain. Thanks for writing this much needed book, Bev.

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly amazing book!
A very impressive read that is as valuable to the therapist as it is for the layperson. Packed with counseling helps, research, and current resources, the author, Bev Hislop is very generous to get all this into one volume. A book worthy to be a textbook resource without drowning the reader with textbook lingo. A definite must have for everyone in a helping profession!
