5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Valuable
Sufferers of pancreatitis and their families will want to have this book - it's a well-organized gateway to a broad range of seemingly-current sources of information about all aspects (one imagines) of the disease and its management.

Price is high for its "build quality", but that shouldn't stand in the way of anyone who wants to begin learning a tremendous amount about this illness. ... Read more

Product Description

Description

This is a moving story of how an ordinary family learnt to cope with the incurable, debilitating and often terminal disease of Pancreatitis. The first symptoms appeared when Andrew was just fifteen and after 20 years he lost complete pancreatic function. This robbed him of his job, wife, home and self-respect.

Often mistaken for an alcoholic or drug addict, it was a constant struggle to receive any help. He could 'live on the streets as homeless without detriment, the same as any other homeless person'.

This resulted in deep depression, self-harm and several suicide attempts. There is no justice.

About the Author

Like many people, Brenda Prentice does not like to see injustice. When her adopted son, who was chronically ill with 20 years of Pancreatitis, became homeless, he was told he could 'live on the streets as homeless like any other homeless person'. There was no help from Social Services, the Housing Authority or some Medics. She took up the issues with the Healthcare Ombudsman, Local Government Ombudsman and the Parliamentary Ombudsman to no avail and after five years all denied any wrong doing. The way he was treated brought further mental health problems of depression, self harm and attempted suicide. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gastrointestinal Health by Miskovitz
This is an excellent medicinal reference on the workings of the
gastrointestinal system. The book is written from the perspective
of conventional medicine. It discusses classic gastrointestinal
issues; such as, difficulty in swallowing, gas, non-cardiac
discomfort, chest pain, nausea, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss and constipation. Abdominal pain on the left side is associated with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Pain on the right
side of the abdomen may be Crohns related. Diarrhea and rectal
bleeding are the classic symptoms of Crohns disease. The CT scan,
MRI, endoscopy and colorectal examinations are the classic
invasive techniques for detection. Non-invasive tests involve
analysis of the breath, blood tests, stool and fecal occult exams. Duodenal ulcers are caused by H-pylori. Standard treatments are H2 blockers, pepcid AC and proton pump inhibitors.
Prilosec is a classic proton inhibitor.

The work is a must for any health enthusiast. The problems
described are classic middle-age conditions encountered by
large portions of the population for a variety of reasons
ranging from genetics to junk food consumption. The work is
a solid investment for the price charged. Acquiring this volume will help you to discuss any of the symptomatology intelligently
with your primary care physician or medical specialist. ... Read more

Product Description
Acute pancreatitis is an acute inflammatory disease of the pancreatic gland which may lead to severe systemic response. The knowledge about this disease, however, has increased considerably in the last two decades. Experimentally, on molecular and pathophysiologic bases we do understand more clearly the primary events in the initiation of acute pancreatitis and its repair. For the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis there are new diagnostic tools available and clinically it is important to establish a generally accepted classification for the different entities of this disease. New treatment concepts have been introduced in the last years, for example the approach to biliary acute pancreatitis by endoscopic procedures and promising compounds for a specific therapy are currently evaluated, including drugs to interfere with the early stage of the disease and anti-infectives for the late phase where infected pancreatic necrosis plays a predominant role. It has become evident that the approach to acute pancreatitis should be managed interdisciplinarily to get the best treatment results.Leading authorities from around the world have contributed to this volume on all aspects of acute pancreatitis. Special attention is paid to new insight in pathophysiology and repair mechanisms, diagnosis and new treatment options in this disease. This book should be of interest to basic scientists, physicians, clinicians, ICU specialists and surgeons. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book presenting current concepts from world authorities
This book is designed for resaerchers and medics that have a strong interest in the field of acute pancreatitis. It presents some of the work by leaders in this field. For those of you who are into pancreatitis research, the names as well as chapters may be familiar to you which makes it easier to read and comprehend. It also presents sometime different and occassionally opposing views of some of the authors. I find this book useful especially with reference to a more general presentation of different views of authors which is not restricted by their one paragraph conclusion in various journal publications. I rate this book a 5 star especially for those in the field of acute pancreatitis research. ... Read more

Product Description
Webster's bibliographic and event-based timelines are comprehensive in scope, covering virtually all topics, geographic locations and people. They do so from a linguistic point of view, and in the case of this book, the focus is on "Pancreatitis," including when used in literature (e.g. all authors that might have Pancreatitis in their name). As such, this book represents the largest compilation of timeline events associated with Pancreatitis when it is used in proper noun form. Webster's timelines cover bibliographic citations, patented inventions, as well as non-conventional and alternative meanings which capture ambiguities in usage. These furthermore cover all parts of speech (possessive, institutional usage, geographic usage) and contexts, including pop culture, the arts, social sciences (linguistics, history, geography, economics, sociology, political science), business, computer science, literature, law, medicine, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology and other physical sciences. This "data dump" results in a comprehensive set of entries for a bibliographic and/or event-based timeline on the proper name Pancreatitis, since editorial decisions to include or exclude events is purely a linguistic process. The resulting entries are used under license or with permission, used under "fair use" conditions, used in agreement with the original authors, or are in the public domain. ... Read more

Product Description
The second half of this century has been marked by the evolution of specialities in some branches of medicine, of which gastro-enterology has proved one of the more vigorous and successful. The development of intricate diagnostic and therapeutic techniques has fostered a tendency to overspecialization. In the past decade there has been a move to broaden the outlook. Workers who study the exocrine pancreas, both scientific and clinical, are now concerned not only with the endocrine pancreas but the liver and biliary tract as well because of the close embryological, anatomical and physiological relationships of the pancreas with these organs. In this volume, the concept of the secretory polarity of the acinar cell is reviewed and the concept of exit-block and the alternative non-regulated pathway via the basolateral membrane in pancreatitis is discussed. The possible validity of the role that oxygen-free radicals play in initiating attacks of acute pancreatitis and relapses of chronic pancreatitis is followed by reports of the Manchester preliminary trials of dietary modifications and the use of anti-oxidant supplements to reduce oxidative stress in these diseases. The part played by leucocytes is reviewed in relation to haemorrhagic pancreatitis and cystic fibrosis of the pancreas. ... Product Description

This book is the proceedings of the Falk Symposium 143 on ‘Pancreatitis: Advances in Pathobiology, Diagnosis and Treatment’, held in Freiburg, Germany, on 14--15 October 2004 (Part II of the Gastroenterology Week Freiburg): the first time in the nearly 40-year-old tradition of International Falk Symposia that pancreatitis has been the main topic of the program. The aim of this state-of-the-art postgraduate volume is two-fold. First, it is focused on the marked progress in the understanding, diagnosis and management of acute and chronic pancreatitis that has been achieved within the last two decades. Second, it emphasizes the numerous, clinically relevant problems which are still unsolved.

Progress in pancreatology is based primarily on a close cooperation between gastroenterologists, visceral surgeons, radiologists, endoscopists and basic scientists. Unfortunately, one important discipline is still largely absent – the pathology – because the pancreas is not accessible to routine biopsy comparable to liver biopsy. On the other hand, basic science has made major contributions recently towards an improved understanding of the pathobiology of pancreatitis.

The book provides an overview of the current knowledge of pancreatology by internationally recognized experts, who also discuss open questions and different standpoints. In pancreatology like in physics we have to recognize the idea which was expressed by the physicist and Nobel Laureate W. Pauli (1900--1958): "the question is never: will the present theory remain or not, the question is always: in what direction will it change."
