5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
Allows those who suffer anxiety or panic attacks to better understand their condition and do something about it in terms of self help. Can also be very useful for relatives of the patient.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get out of the cycle!
This writer really hits the nail on the head when she talks about the
whole cycle of panici.e., you freak out that you're going to have
a panic attack, which makes you have a panic attack, which makes you
avoid dealing with it, which makes you feel like a loser, which makes you
try to deal with it, which makes you freak out that you're going to
have a panic attack, which, duh, makes you have another panic attack!
But then there are actually some cool techniques to get OUT of the damn
cycle. So I recommend this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Self Help Book
I recently got this and it is certainly an above average anti anxiety self help book, I have read many and this offers some real ways to reduce anxiety as it titles states. Its most certainly worth picking up.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book Helps my Clients!
I am a professional in the healing arts, and over the years I've treated many clients who suffer from one form of anxiety disorder or another. Last year, one of my regulars got her hands on this book, and wow! She really showed tremendous improvement. She asked me if I would recommend it to my other clients, so I read it, and thought enough of it to suggest it to a few other clients with anxiety-related issues. So far, the word back has been totally positive. I'm embarassed to say it's taken me almost a year to get around to writing this review, but if it helps even one person with what I can vouch for being a particularly difficult problem to overcome, I've done my job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real Help --No Bull.
Ninety-nine percent of thebooks I've read that were supposedly going to help me with my panic attacks have been (to put it charitably) so NOT helpful. Mostly they tend to skip out on the hard-core practical advice, hoping that your doctor and/or therapist will fill in all the difficult blanks. But Panic Free rocked my world. Even though it's easy to read (I found the writing stylekind of entertaining!) all the info is there, and it makes sense, and -- best of all-- it is user-friendly.
In order to feel like any bookis helping me get better, I really need proof it's working. Since there are exercises to do in here -- and since they are totally working for me -- I feel way more confident that I can recover FOR GOOD.
In all, I highly recommend this book.

Book Description
Part cultural history, part sociological critique, and part literary performance, Panic Diaries explores the technological and social construction of individual and collective panic. Jackie Orr looks at instances of panic and its “cures” in the twentieth-century United States: from the mass hysteria following the 1938 radio broadcast of H. G. Wells’s War of the Worlds to an individual woman swallowing a pill to control the “panic disorder” officially recognized by the American Psychiatric Association in 1980. Against a backdrop of Cold War anxieties over atomic attack, Orr highlights the entanglements of knowledge and power in efforts to reconceive panic and its prevention as problems in communication and information feedback. Throughout, she reveals the shifting techniques of power and social engineering underlying the ways that scientific and social scientific discourses—including crowd psychology, Cold War cybernetics, and contemporary psychiatry—have rendered panic an object of technoscientific management.

Orr, who has experienced panic attacks herself, kept a diary of her participation as a research subject in clinical trials for the Upjohn Company’s anti-anxiety drug Xanax. This “panic diary” grounds her study and suggests the complexity of her desire to track the diffusion and regulation of panic in U.S. society. Orr’s historical research, theoretical reflections, and biographical narrative combine in this remarkable and compelling genealogy, which documents the manipulation of panic by the media, the social sciences and psychiatry, the U.S. military and government, and transnational drug companies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Raod to Recovery Begin Here!
This is the Second Edition of this book; one I've been waiting for for a while. I saw the first edition of this book when it was loaned to me by a staffer at a "facility" I found myself in a while back and to say it helped me save my life would be a severe understatement. The simple concept of Mindfulness struck me like a ton of bricks. This is not a book to borrow from your friendly local library, this is a book to get and hold. A book to change your life. Very readable, almost a fun read, were it not doing so much change to my anxious mind in the process. Buy this book, read it, live it and get rid of that pesky anxious mind you've been living with all these stress laden years. It really does help make life fun again!

2-0 out of 5 stars not as good as expected
it deffinatley helped me out however I found that alot of the information and phrases are used over and over again through out the boook which made it boring to read . I baught this book because its foreworded by Jon Kinn but it did not have his style. I also did not like the cheap white paper its printed on , it feels like a cheap copy that somone made at home with a photocopy mahcine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
This book was very helpful in understanding axiety and how to work in anxious environments.I would recommend this reading to someone who would like to learn more about the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life-changing book
Along with Jon Kabat-Zinn's Full Catastrophe Living, this is an indispensable book for anyone who suffers from GAD, SAD, or panic disorder. This is compassionate, pragmatic, deep therapy that has great power on its own and can be a great supplement to working with a therapist. There's strong current science behind it, and 2500 years of Buddhist practice.Very simply, if you learn to focus in the present you won't worry so much about the future, or beat yourself up about the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only half way through, but give it 5 stars already
This book is wonderful.I am only half way through, but it already deserves five stars. It is a great book if you take your time and do the work and pratice the "mindfulness".It can and will change your life.I have noticed during a very unexpected stressful day recently, that several times the word mindfulness popped into my head and I just centered myself in the moment instead of thinking of how behind I was and how mucy more I had to do that day.And at that point, I hadn't even really learned what mindfulness meant.Give this book a try.I don't think you'll be sorry. ... Product Description
The Panic of 1819 was America's first great economic crisis. And this is Rothbard's masterful account, the first full scholarly book on the topic and still the most definitive. It was his dissertation, published in 1962 but nearly impossible to get until this new edition, the first with the high production values associated with Mises Institute publications.

The American Economic Review was wild for this book when it appeared: "Rothbard's work represents the only published, book-length, academic treatise on the remedies that were proposed, debated, and enacted in attempts to copy with the crisis of 1819," the reviewer wrote. "As such, the book should certainly find a place on the shelf of the study of U.S. business cycles and of the economic historian who is interested in the early economic development of the United States."

And specialists have treasured the book for years. It is incredible to realized that some American historians think of MN Rothbard as the author of this book and nothing else!

Rothbard tells the story about a disaster that could not be attributed to some specific government blunder or disaster. It seemed to originate from within the economic system itself. Its cause was not obvious to observers at the time. Confronted with something new, the Panic engendered much discussion and debate about possible causes and remedies. As Rothbard observes, the panic provides "an instructive picture of a people coming to grips with the problems of a business depression, problems which, in modified forms, were to plague Americans until the present day."

There were many cranky and contradictory remedies proposed, and Rothbard reviews each one. But in the end, there was no widespread confusion on what caused the downturn. Instead, it was widely known that a false prosperity is a very dangerous thing. It always turns to bust. Bad legislation failed to pass, the government embarked on no New Deal planning, and there was no great reflat ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Only chapter 1 - 4 was worth reading
The book starts out great but then after the pages of ex husband slating and soppy life information I was left wondering whether this book was there to help people or a biography of the author's life? I have found books written by professionals a lot more helpful!

5-0 out of 5 stars dont forget to look up: a christians guide to overcome
Truly inspirational ! I am so glad a christian has spoke up . Too many people think its a mental persons illness and just dont understand it . I think Angela Brittian puts another face on this treatable illness . Were not crazy just suffers of a painful nervous condition . I recommend this book to anyone looking for comfort and help to overcome . The bible scriptures are such a help and comfort .

3-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Book
This book is part self-help, and part autobiography. You won't really find a lot of specific ways to help overcome anxiety attacks here. Most of the techniques are very general in nature, and this book is in no way an exhaustive review of how to treat anxiety or panic attacks.

Still, the book is very inspirational, and any Christian that suffers from anxiety and panic attacks will find it worth reading. Its main virture is really its inspiration though, rather than any specific methods for combatting anxiety.

I found one of the chapters, on Bible verses that relate to anxiety and strength, to be the most helpful. The book is a quick read. You should be able to finish it in 1-2 sittings.

Definitely inspirational, and worth your reading time. There aren't many books available on Christian spirituality and conquering anxiety. If you aren't Christian, and have no interest in becoming Christian, this book won't really help you much. If you are, and you suffer from anxiety, definitely check it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
I am so glad people can share their experiences with others when they go through something so traumatic. I loved the scriptures I received from the book, I have been searching for scriptures that would help me.( is it not amazing how GOD sends us what we need;-))Noone can understand what Panic and anxiety is all about until they themselves live the nightmare.Angela lived it, she overcame it, and she shared it with others. That is the whole purpose in life, to live, learn and share with others.Thank you so much, for all the information I received, and for the care that you put into the book.I plan to get my whole family to read this book because it takes understanding something to be able to help someone.GOD will surely bless you in every way, through reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You Angela!
Thank you Angela for an excellent book, that told me what was the matter with me. I didnt know that I had an actual medical condition till I read your book and saw all these symptoms and feelings I have had many times and read many scenarios of yours that were very similiar to mine. I even had a husband with the same name and attitude and personality as your ex-husband. And I haven't had near as many attacks since I left him. And just like you I had a very hard time leaving him because marriage is suppose to be for life but I knew it was very unhealthy for me to stay in that situation. Your book has helped tremendously, I now understand what is going on with me. Your book has touched me. It is very easy to read and its great to read about somebody who has personally experienced this and explains it in plain english and not from some doctor using medical jargon. Thank you again Angela..I am now looking to God to help me. I am also in a much healthier relationship with a man who also goes through these panic and anxiety attacks so we are there for each other because we understand what each other is going through. Thank you so much Angela.God Bless You! ... Read more

Originally serialized in a magazine aimed at slightly younger readers, Overload! has the same basic story with a lot more comedy and a lot more explosions! Sosuke has finally lost his mind - and his memory! Rehashing his previous exploits will keep Kaname busy, but it doesn't take long for the military mind of this soldier to bounce back with a bang - literally! He's locked, loaded, and back to his old self by first period, as bombs and bullets grace the halls of high school! ... Read more

This was pretty f-ing funny i am one who loves the fmp series and this is no ecception, the only thing i did not like was the drawing stile but other than that awsome super cool to the 10th power to infinity plus 180'

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic FMP
I'm a huge fan of the series and an avid collector of all things Full Metal Panicy. The characters and how they develope interest me the most. The almost tragic relationship between souske and kaname is what keeps me so deeply intrigued. I mean how can you not love the way they act with each other??! Many a time reading this comic in the quiet spaces of my dorm have i just burst out in laughter causing my roommate to think i'm nuts, only because i say to myself "thats souske alright!"

Fantastic and hilarious start to this new series of comics! Shouji keep up the great work! I look forward to more of them, and i hope you other FMP maniacs will do the same.

3-0 out of 5 stars WOW IT'S A PANIC AND A OVERLOAD WATCH OUT!!!!
I thick this one was alright it had no point thow. Just alot of bombs!!!!! I thick kids will like it thow i gese

4-0 out of 5 stars A good laugh à la FMP!
Don't expect an actual rerun of the original FMP manga (or novel for that matter). This one emphasize more of the comic aspects of FMP! than the one done by Tetsu Tateo. The graphics are more comic-like and the plot not as complicated (think FMP: fumoffu). But don't get me wrong, it is still a good laugh.Sousuke is as much of a war-maniac as he can be (or maybe even more) while Kaname gets even more exasperated as ever and that's what reallyshines up in this new take of this popular serie. Don't miss it if you're a fan of FMP! (or not) and you liked the funny side of FMP!. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This program honestly works!
I found this book to be very helpful. The first few chapters help you to learn the cause and effect of your anxiety/phobia/panic and coping skills to deal with these issues. The further you read the more you learn how to overcome your issues and REGAIN CONTROL OF YOUR LIFE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Magnesium can speed up relief of anxiety; please read review
I am very familiar with the pain of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia for I suffered from these maladies for several decades. During those years of suffering I believed that my problems were purely mental and underwent treatment by psychiatrists, psychologists, and hypnotherapists. I took various prescribed medications and read many books such as this, but experienced little relief. And then something wonderful happened: I began taking a daily supplement of chelated magnesium (for a different ailment) and shortly thereafter experienced a significant diminishment of anxiety in addition to cure of the ailment for which I had originally taken the supplemental magnesium. There seemed to be no explanation for why taking supplemental magnesium caused this wonderful loss of anxiety until the publication in 2003 of the important book The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean. Early in her book Dr. Dean reveals that a major cause of anxiety and panic attacks is deficiency of magnesium and that magnesium deficiency is quite common in the U.S. Therefore, I beg all sufferers of anxiety, panic attacks, and agoraphobia -- whatever else you may do -- please purchase and read The Miracle of Magnesium by Dr. Carolyn Dean and please try the magnesium supplementation which she recommends. It may change your life as has changed mine.

5-0 out of 5 stars more helpful than I could have imagined
I began experiencing discomfort and then panic attacks after some stressful periods in my life several years ago.The panic attacks got so bad that I had trouble going to and being at work, going out for entertainment, and at various other times including when I was at home.

For a while I couldn't figure out what was happening to me. After finally figuring out that I was having panic attacks I bought this book.Following the chapters in the book, it took about four weeks to have complete control over my anxiety. The methods for eliminating the episodes were fantastic and have really saved me in many areas of my life.

I would highly recommend this book.It addresses anxiety as well as OCD and various phobias. It's been several years since I got this book and went through it and I have not had a single panic attack since. While I still do experience everyday stress, and sometimes a lot of it - this book has made me better at recognizing and handling very stressful situations far better than I ever could prior to reading it.I wish I had read this book prior to ever having the panic attacks. It will help you change your perspective and turn stressful events into exciting and enjoyable ones.

I can't say enough good about this book - If you have panic attacks or experience anxiety or even just want to improve your ability to handle pressure, you should _definitely_ buy and read this book!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well balance approach!!
A year ago I had a 'panic attack'.I could not seem to get past it.My life seemed to have changed over night.Things got really scary.I've been extremely successful in my career and never before had I felt 'stressed' or even thought about anxiety.I feared that my panic attack was a sign of weakness and my life would crumble.
After reading through several books, I was blessed to have come across this one. Most of the other books I read lost me about half way through when they became corny and unrealistic.
This book is easy to follow and takes you step-by-step through explaining to you what's going on and what you can do about it.I can't tell you how much better I feel already.READ IT!!! ... Read more

Book Description
What if everything in your life was a lie?

Things are going well for 24 year-old Evan Casher: his career as a documentary filmmaker is booming and his relationship with his new girlfriend, Carrie, couldn’t be better. After an urgent phone call from his mother, he makes an unexpected trip home to Austin. Then the unthinkable happens. He arrives to find his mother brutally murdered, and narrowly escapes an attempt on his own life.Spirited away from the scene by an enigmatic mercenary with an agenda of his own, Evan is confronted with a shocking fact: his entire life has been little more than a carefully constructed lie.

Pursued by a powerful, ruthless organization of killers who will stop at nothing to keep old secrets buried, Evan’s only hope for survival is to uncover the truth about his family…and his own past. With his mother’s attackers fast on his heels and with no one to trust--not the authorities, his father, nor the woman he loves--his perilous search takes him from the Texas Hill Country to New Orleans, to London, and to Miami. Full of unforgettable characters and jolting plot twists, Panic is an emotionally charged, heart-stopping thriller about one man’s determination to take back his stolen life.

Praise for PANIC:

—Lee Child

"Jeff Abbott's PANIC is a superb story, a sterling example of why we love stories about ordinary men thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Don't even try to anticipate the twists and turns in this intelligent thriller -- just hold on tight and remember to breathe."
—Laura Lippman

"PANIC is a sleek, smart thriller that combines a family tragedy, international intrigue, and the redemptive power of love into one of this year's best books. There is no question: Jeff Abbott is the new name in suspense."
--Harlan Coben

“PANIC is what a reader enjoys when a really talented writer like Jeff Abbott comes up with a fresh and gripping plot. It's even better than his CUT AND RUN."
--Tony Hillerman

"Jeff Abbott has all the ingredients of high suspense in PANIC: an ordinary man whose everyday life changes within minutes into an unrecognizable landscape, a place where he is in constant danger and can find no easy way out. Be prepared to stay up all night."

4-0 out of 5 stars A plausible page turner
An intelligent read with a plausible story...it's always a plus if you can actually believe the plot. Sometimes with the kind of thriller (book or film) where the main character doesn't know where to turn, I find myself getting frustrated as they continually make the wrong decisions but that doesn't happen here.

Evan is thrown into confusion when his mother is murdered and he very nearly suffers the same fate. The author successfully portrays Evan's confusion at not knowing who to trust...when the people closest to you don't appear to have been who you thought they were and your life is in serious danger, how do you decide who to believe?

I liked the characters, and I also liked the fact that the author wasn't afraid to dispense with some of the good guys along the way.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun Fast Paced Read! Granted Unrealistic But So What? It's Not a Non Fiction Book
I really enjoyed this book. Panic is not the most realistic adventure ever written but if it was real Evan would be dead in the first few chapters as would his girlfriend Carrie, we would never have even got to the fetched reptile scenes (I don't believe in spoilers so I'm not giving away this scene but those who have read the book know what I'm talking about, entertaining and good for Hollywood but in real life there would be human death).Granted some really great thrillers are so scary thrill wise because you believe what is going on could happen to you but some unrealistic ones are great reads too because they are just well written fun adventures.

In Panic Evan Casher is a young award winning documentary filmmaker. He has a beautiful girlfriend, lots of money, yeah life's pretty good so when his mum rings him and tells him he must come see her immediately he drops everything to do so.When he walks in the door he finds her corpse on the floor and before he can work out what is going on is being strangled himself. A weird bald man with farfetched fighting skills saves his life but the bald guy seems just as dangerous as the two who were killing him so Evan decides to escape and call the cops.Soon Evan learns his parents weren't the nice honest working people they claimed to be, the bald man is back and Evan knows if he is to get his life back with his girlfriend he has to track down his father and work out what this file everyone seems to want which his mother e-mailed him contained.

I'll definitely check out other Abbott books. If you liked Panic also check out Harlan Coben's stand alone storyline novels.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fast paced, but it has some flaws
I decided to read the book based on the plot and though I think the book has some great scenes and is very fast paced at times, it is also a bit unbelievable. Evan Casher, a documentary film director, finds his world turned upside down after he finds his mother murdered in her home.

The problem? Evan Casher is not a spy. He's not CIA, FBI, KGB, etc...His career is filmwork. Suddenly, he's smarter than top rogue CIA agents and is able to outwit them at every turn. Abbott is a good writer and I enjoyed the book, but the main character was just too unbelievable in his ability to deal with the underworld of spies and of particularly tough/vengeful agents.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Quite There
Evan Casher finds out the hard way his parents are spies. He finds his mother murdered and there's a noose around his neck. And that's just the beginning. This book has more excitement than a trip through the Grand Canyon at a hundred miles an hour, but unfortunately, the book goes off course a few times. Evan learns his girlfriend has set him up, but he trusts her still. And that's part of the problem, the good guys and bad guys switch hats so many times, it's hard to tell them apart. Evan seems a bit gullible and whenever he gets in trouble, he seems to grab a friendly hacker or drug lord for assistance. The plot is good, but is hard to sustain. It took me several sessions to finish the book, because I put it down every time it's credibility suffered. Still, it's better than many of the genre.

2-0 out of 5 stars Two-and-a-half stars. Ho-Hum...
Lot's of decent reviews for Jeff Abbott's thriller, Panic, with glowing endorsements from authors Lee Child (loving his big, dumb, testosterone-charged Jack Reacher thrillers was the reason I took a chance and bought this thing), Michael Connelly, and mystery/thriller hack auteur, Harlen Coben. If that wasn't enough, somebody went so far as to slap a 'Great Read Guaranteed' tag on the cover of my paperback copy. How could I refuse?

The premise? Pretty simple and straight forward mystery/thriller stuff, with enough of a twist to make it interesting. Up-and-coming documentary filmmaker Evan Casher gets a strange phone call from his mother pleading for him to come and see her immediately. Evan leaves his safe daily routine (and his gorgeous and slightly mysterious new girlfriend) and returns to his parents home to find his mother brutally murdered - and now the killers are after him!

Whooo-boy! Another blurb on the cover, via Maxim, states that "Panic aims to thrill with every page..." They got that right. But frankly, Panic is cheesy to the point of being unreadable. You can just imagine Abbott straining to come up with a concept that's Hollywood-thriller worthy. Well, I guess he managed that - you can distill the plot down into a sentence or two (just like Hollywood likes) - but his writing... Oy.

Forget an intelligent thriller about a normal guy thrown into an abnormal situation. As other reviews here have stated, there's absolutely no way can I buy the fact that soft, movie-boy Casher can suddenly become a super-spy, going up against (supposedly) brutal and hardened, caramel-chewing, CIA-trained assassins and live.

And worse, even if I could suspend my disbelief (maybe being a super-spy is in Casher's genes - ? After all, both his parents were, so why not?), Abbott's dialogue is vapid, his characters are ridiculously overplayed and stereotyped (remember the old movie villain, twirling his teensy mustache while chuckling maniacally?), and there may as well be a flurry of exclamation points at the end of each cliffhanging chapter.

God knows there are worse books out there, and I imagine that folks who like Harlen Coben's silly, over-hyped thrillers will probably get a kick out of this too. At least the cover was sort of cool. But once past that, this 'thriller' can't deliver the promise of it's title. Unfortunately, I can see the movie poster now... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A modern classic even in its reprint edition over fifty years later
Hadley Cantril was chairman of the Institute for international Social Research: his Invasion From Mars: A Study In The Psychology Of Panic originally appeared in 1940 but remains a modern classic even in its reprint edition over fifty years later. The focus on the lasting effects of Orson Welles' radio adaptation of the fantasy War of the Worlds explores how radio could have such an effect - and how people judged the accuracy of what they were hearing on the radio.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth reading
Anybody who suffers from anxiety/panic should read this book.Even if you come out feeling that this text was a little "lightweight" as another reviewer indicated, the approach that Fox offers is unique in my experience and, importantly, effective.Instead of trying to treat the symptoms as many books do (e.g., write down calming statements, practice breathing exercises, etc), Power Over Panic encourages a fundamental perspective adjustment to how we view our disorder.Lose the fear of your anxiety/panic and it will lose its power over you.Simple enough but an important lesson nonetheless.Best of luck, life is too good to waste on anxiety and panic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special
I gave this book a chance and read it with an open mind, but I didn't get much back in return. The book had many repetitive ideas and I disagree with the author believing that self-esteem issues are at the core of anxiety disorders. I did, however, find the meditation section helpful. I would have liked the book to describe more techniques to overcome panic, then just describe ideas about it. It was a lot about what we need to do, but not much on how to do it. It was still an interesting discussion of anxiety disorders....just felt like it was missing a few chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars So good I read it twice in one week!
I stumbled upon this book by mistake, and it was so "right on target" that I came to see if she other books.

I have been managing panic attacks and anxiety for over 10 years. This book explains the "so what" approach ~ and while it seems so simple .....it made so much sense to me.

If you have anxiety, panic, or depressionI reccommend this book with more than 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars The absolute guide to true understanding of panic & anxiety
I have been a sufferer of Panic Disorder and generalized anxiety for 17 years. In my constant quest for relief I have read an enormous amount of material on the subject in addition to taking medications, therapy, and of course visiting a cardiologist. I was amazed on finding this book of little over 100 pages, to explain my disorder clearly and in very simple terms and direct me (at last) to proper treatment. After you read it you'll have to ask yourself why no one else explained it this way or even bothered to explain it at all! It is not full of testimonials or life stories. Just the facts and compassionate understanding from the author who also has suffered. This is AA for Panic and Anxiety. ... Read more
