5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide
I have Parkinson's, and this is the most comprehensive, up-to-date book on the subject I've seen. If you are buying one book on this topic, this is the book to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have
If you have PD or care for someone or know someone with it you will find this book helpful in any of those situations.I learned many things from this book.Including that some things my husband, who has early onset PD, was going through that turned out were symptoms and not just random events.I thank those that wrote this for helping me care for him and being informed. Also, they section on young onset PD really helped because i was beginning to feel he had intermediate PD when really it was signs and symptoms from his Y.O.P.D.It lifted a heavy weight knowing he wasn't that far into the disease (intermediate stage).I was able to rely many things to his nuerologist that he was experiencing based upon my reading so he can get better care.Thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parkinson's Disease: A Complete Guide for Patients and Famil
EXCELLENT resource book !!!I am back ordering a second copy for our family to share around.... gives excellent, detailed information on both the physical side of the disease and the side-effects of the medications... easy read... very comprehensive... I recommend HIGHLY !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Parkinson's Disease
The author of this book did a great job in explaining what Parkinson's Disease is and giving information for the patient and the caregiver.I am a dental hygienist and I learned just an overview of the disease in school. After having my first patient with the disease I decided to learn more about it.I learned alot from this book that I should of already known for my patient. The book tells you the symptoms and the side effects of the disease and advice on drug therapy, diet, and exercise. Some people don't even know that they have the disease for a couple of months or even years. They think it is just old age or arthritis. The book also states what kind of medical advice to seek.
I have never met a patient with Parkinson's Disease until a couple of months ago.I didn't know what to expect. When the patient walked in I was shocked. She looked normal and wasn't shaking. She was the sweetest patient I had met.She explained to me her life and how she lives with the disease. She said that she sometimes gets embarrased to be seen in public when she has her tremors because she thinks that everyone is staring at her.But she said she is the same person as all of us.She just has to take medication and she gets tired alot more than you and me.When I was cleaning her teeth she only had mild tremors so it wasn't that difficult to work on her.But one day I will probably get a patient who has severe tremors but I am ready thanks to this book in guiding me with the knowledge of what I needed to know.I think that if you know someone who has Parkinson's disease or if you would like to learn more about the disease buy this book and you will be filled with all the information you need to know about Parkinson's disease.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Information
Never having had any experience or knowledge on the basis of this disease, I got the book to help me understand my father's disease.I have gotten a fuller understanding of the causes of the disease, the symptoms, the treatments (and making decisions regarding the selections of the treatments), and the progression of the disease.I feel much better informed and feel I can support my father better because of it.It was definitely written to help support the patient and family supporting that patient. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Delay the Disease is user-friendly for the PD patient
Parkinson's patients who buy David Zid's exercise book will have no excuse for skipping a workout regardless of where they happen to be. Nearly two dozen routines can be performed while seated-even in tight spaces like an airplane. Doing the Spider on a Mirror(fingertips of opposite hands touching, then releasing a pair at a time)might draw curious glances from other passengers, but they'll likely decide you're just a nervous flier praying for a smooth ride. Unlike other exercise books, routines covered in Delay the Disease don't call for investment in specialized equipment. Stand behind a chair and hold it while you work the knees and legs. A kitchen counter provides support for balance training. The book's design makes Delay the Disease user friendly. Each exercise is illustrated with as many as four pictures in color on heavy paper. Spiral binding makes it easy to hold the book open to the appropriate page. ~Tom P., PD exercise class participant

5-0 out of 5 stars Better Quality of Life
Excellent instructional book. I was diagnosed in early 2004 with PD and frankly did not have much to look forward to. David and his instructional book changed all of that! I now sit-to-stand and walk with ease. My balance has improved and I even dance again! Friends that knew me before Delay the Disease can't believe the improvement and new acquanitances are are shocked to learn that I have PD! The book has easy to use instructions (with corresponding pictures!) and is seperated into three levels of difficulty. Anyone (at any stage) of PD should try this book! It will improve your quality of life. It did for me! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book for the average person
Despite my stack of books on parkinson's,I find myself almost always refering to this book for most of my questions. And answers are usually there in a nondepressing style. What's more the book goes into alternative methods of treatment as well as the conventional, Many things your doctor won't take the time to tell you.

5-0 out of 5 stars an incredibly invaluable resource
I've had Parkinson's for a few years now, and, at age 51, have the ignoble distinction of being among those deemed "early onset." This book was among the first I bought when I was diagnosed, and stayed in the pile of books doctors and medical associations were gracious and generous enough to give me. Once I got to it, however, I quickly realized it is among the best. Descriptions, definitions, explanations... All are presented in clear, straightforward, easy-to-understand language, all are thorough without getting long-winded, and all are compassionate without being sappy or unrealistically "everything will be great." I appreciate the even-handedness of both her allopathic and holistic treatment descriptions, not offering much in the way of criticism nor over-the-top praise, just presenting the many options available. In glancing through the table of contents as i write this, to refresh my memory, i find it hard to really encapsulate this book, it is so packed with useful information. Like, how to find a great doctor. Suffice it to say that, from my experience and my belief in balancing both western and alternative medicine, this book is invaluable, for patient, friends, and family. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book for helping those who have parkinsons disease and others with disability
I found this book helpful for helping a friend who has parkinsons and also my 85 year old mother, who only has aged-related physical disability. The movements are grounded in the theory behind Tai Chi and the Martial Arts, which is the gold-standard behind many other books dealing with body work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great at-home program
We set this program up with a family member who has PD; it got her moving and using muscles that she hadn't used in a while. Not only is it an effective set of exercises, it is also fun for her and her caregiver. We like the way it gives her time to work on certain exercises for an extended period of time before moving on, as well as giving her a new set to look forward to. Thanks for exactly what we needed!

After having read several books regarding Parkinson's Disease, I found that this was one of the most clearly written, comprehensive books I've read on the topic. 5-0 out of 5 stars A critical book for those with Parkinson's Disease and their relatives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Giving this to friends for three years
This book came out four or five years ago. It's gone through one revision, and I continue to give it out to friends.

Originally I read this as a person related to someone with Parkinsons - it had helped my mother deal with the challenge. But I heard from others that it was simply inspirational for anyone dealing with a long term health challenge.

I've bought this book 11 times now to give to people who need some light. And I hear time and again that that's happened - and that they get it for others.

Newsom is a real inspiration.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful and Thoughtful for all Who Care About or Care for Someone with PD
When I was put into the position of having to learn about Parkinson's disease, the first book I read was Hal Newsom's "HOPE".It is a fast read and easily understood.I learned a lot about PD and how attitude, exercise, drugs and nutrition are so important.A few months later I re-read "HOPE".What struck me the second time around was that the book improved with the second reading.Anyone who has PD should read this book. And, anyone who cares about or cares for someone with PD should also read it.It's one way to learn what goes on emotionally and spiritually with a PD patient, in addition to physically.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book yet for the Parkinson's patient
Absolutely the finest tool yet to give one the incentive to get up, get out and get busy. First rate.

Book Description
Nearly one million Americans, including Michael J. Fox and Muhammad Ali, suffer from Parkinson's Disease. Now, a leader in the fight against Parkinson's, Dr. J. Eric Ahlskog of the Mayo Clinic, has written the definitive guide for patients and their families.Dr. Ahlskog offers a crystal-clear, nuts-and-bolts approach to the treatment of PD, distilled from over twenty years of experience as a clinician and researcher. His goal is to educate the patient so that they can better team with their doctor to do battle with the disease, streamlining the decision-making process and enhancing their treatment. To do this, Dr. Ahlskog offers a gold mine of information: How do I know if I have PD? What kinds of tests can I take? What medications slow the progress of the disease? What if medications don't help my tremor? What kinds of movement problems may develop later? How can I cope with insomnia and daytime sleepiness, dizziness and depression, memory problems, paranoia, and delusions? Indeed, the book covers virtually every topic related to Parkinson's, from sexual impotence and skin rashes, to the role of nutrition, exercise, and physical therapy. In addition, Dr. Ahlskog discusses brain surgery (though he urges that patients only consider this as a last resort) and such experimental therapies as stem cell transplantation and gene therapy. There are also lists of support and advocacy groups and Internet sites that focus on Parkinson's. The ultimate guide to symptoms and treatment, this superb book is the first place patients should turn for reliable, easy-to-grasp information on Parkinson's disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An essential resource for the Parkinson's patient and family
A relative has Parkinson's and I have tried to help out by researching issues that have come up. The Parkinson's patient and family who arm themselves with information about the many twists and turns in the course of this complicated and profound illness will fare better. You should not expect that the medical world will completely "take care of" the Parkinson's - a lot will be up to you, and you have to learn what to look for, the questions to ask, the possibilities. By the way, we live near Boston, one of the world's great medical centers, so what I am saying does not have to do with lack of access to the best care currently available. This book has been of tremendous practical value to us. I consider it essential for any Parkinson's family. It is easily the best Parkinson's resource I have found.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks Dr. Ahlskog for Caring Enough About Your Patients to Write this book!
Dr. Ahlskog shares his vast knowledge, expertise and caring bedside manner in this book.It is specifically written, in user friendly language, for families dealing with Partinson's. It answers any and all questions one might have concerning the disease and treatment of it.It is an absolute 'MUST HAVE' book for Parkison's Families..

5-0 out of 5 stars My Mom is taking this book to the doctor for discussion points
This book recommends using it to help discuss with your doctor the PD medications, which is exactly what my Mom is going to do today. When I saw this book recently it was what my Mom had been wishing for to help her figure out how to help my Dad, who is developing Parkinson's hallucinations and paranoia issues after many years of battling this disease. These are known problems from both the disease, as well as the medications to treat the illness. The book gave me renewed hope and optimism for helping my Dad be more himself again. Adjustments of the various prescribed medications can make a difference in life quality by balancing medication negative side effects with their benefits. My Mom is taking my Dad to the doctor today to discuss his medications and she taking this book with her. It's nice to know she has the Mayo clinic doctor, in essence, to take with her to discuss points with the local doctor.

Amazon.com
Morton Kondracke chronicles his wife's 13-year battle against Parkinson's disease with the same attention to nitty-gritty details and shrewd understanding of how power works that distinguish his political commentary. Kondracke doesn't airbrush how horrible it is to have Parkinson's (the squeamish should avoid the passages about Milly Kondracke's two rounds of deep-brain surgery), or how difficult it is to live with someone who does (the mere recitation of his caretaking activities will exhaust most readers). He provides unvarnished accounts of the battles among members of the Parkinson's Action Network and other disease activists competing for limited federal research funds, until they got real and decided to fight to double the National Institutes of Health's budget so everyone would get more money. And he refuses to offer a feel-good ending charged with false hope; the book's closing pages include a grim account of the Kondrackes' discussions about what to do if she becomes unable to swallow. (They settled on refusing the feeding tube and allowing her to starve to death, which "is not painful if the patient doesn't take liquids.") Offsetting this bleak material is a vibrant, loving, and equally candid portrait of the indomitable Millicent Martinez Kondracke, who began up-ending the admittedly self-absorbed, drivingly ambitious Kondracke's life from the moment they met in 1966. He'd planned to marry an Ivy-educated heiress who could further his career; instead he was swept away by a Mexican Jewish American firebrand who challenged authority on everything from a botched car repair to the school system's poor handling of their daughter's dyslexia. Seeing how powerful she once was, we share her anguish as she descends into disability--and her husband's hope that, despite all the current scientific projections, research will provide a breakthrough in time to save Milly. --Wendy Smith Book Description
Morton Kondracke never intended to wed Millicent Martinez, but the fiery daughter of a radical labor organizer eventually captured his heart. They married, raised two daughters, and loved and fought passionately for twenty years. Then, in 1987, Milly noticed a glitch in her handwriting, a small tremor that would lead to the shattering diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Saving Milly is Kondracke’s powerfully moving chronicle of his vital and volatile marriage, one that has endured and deepened in the face of tragedy; it also follows his own transformation from careerist to caregiver and activist, a man who will “fight all the way, without pause or rest, to ‘save’ his beloved Milly.” *

5-0 out of 5 stars Saving Milly, a Parkinson's Story
Excellent book, well written. Anyone who has, or is spouse or friend of
someone with Parkinson's should read this book. It will make you cry and then make you mad, really mad. The U.S. Government should read it and see
how poorly funds are distributed for aid and research. It's a shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding interview + reader's guide in paperback edition
Paperback includes both a reading guide and a compelling interview with Kondracke by his comrade, Fred Barnes. In particular, it is interesting to learn about what Kondracke wishes he had done a bit differently in telling the story. In a sense, Kondracke stands outside the story to evaluate how faithfully he told it, an extraordinary exercise.

Maybe this book is less about Milly and more about "saving Milly" and what that meant: pragmatically, socially, politically, spiritually. It's a useful distinction to bear in mind. There is some background information about this brave and lovely woman, but inasmuch as the topic is an encounter with a disease she has, this is not a biography of Milly. It is a picture of sickness and its impact: not of the woman, herself.

There are plenty of books about people with illness: fewer, by far, about the very flawed, though devoted, individuals who care for them. Kondracke seems no longer to flinch at the shadows of his inadequacy and pomposity, which might encourage the reader to consider a similarly brave examination of conscience. Many of us will be called to be caregivers. Thisis no map, but it is a clear narrative of costs, rewards, pain, and delight that bubble up in the dynamic between cared-for and caregiver.

I liked the book a lot and absolutely recommend the paperback edition because of its additions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saving A Friend
I had known Milly Kondracke for a quarter of a century before her death last year of Parkinson's disease. She was my mentor. Morton's memoir of their marriage is touching, well-written and a quick read.

My only regret is that Morton glossed over Milly's wonderful gift as a social worker/therapist in a paragraph, for that was her career identity. Milly did her own mourning when she had to cease her private practice due to her illness. Still the book gives you a taste of her personality, one of those persons who were larger than life.

"Saving Milly" achingly illustrates the struggle of a family who must care for a loved one through a long term illness and raises the question of politics, funding and ethics for those with incurable illnesses. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why I Will Never Complain Again
Reading this book was like sitting at a kitchen table and letting Mort just pour his story out over a cup of coffee (like Mort, I am a recovering drunk so we can't do it over a beer). His is a story of passion, love, commitment and clear proof that there is nothing in my life I can ever complain about again.

Millie is an extraordinary woman, her struggles with life, faith and Parkinson's come alive in this real narrative. You can't help but feel her pain, and Mort's immense love and commitment to her.

I have always liked Kondracke as a pundit - I am a liberal republican, he a conservative democrat. We share similar feelings about nearly every issue except who we are most likely to initially vote for in a Presidential race. His struggle to get government officials to hear his plea for funding pissed me off - and I am sure you will share his frustrations in the reading.

Most critically, you will absolutely be moved by the openness, honesty and devotion in this story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely moving story about a couple and their struggle
Morton Kondrake's book is about much more than his wife Milly's Parkinson's disease. It's also about their life together, their marriage, the differences that caused friction between them,Kondrake's struggles in his career and those to overcome his own weaknesses, including, for a time, alcoholism. What emerges is a story of quiet heroism, both his and Milly's, as she defies the odds and continues to prove that her will to live is greater than her despair. Kondrake also writes about the politics of research and fundraising for various diseases, and how some diseases have more cache than others, even if the disease garnering more print and air time afflicts far fewer people than other devastating ailments. This may not come as a shock to people but it is still important so that we can all do what we can to campaign to make disease research and funding more equitable.

I was most touched by Kondrake's unsparingly honest account of his own shortcomings as a man, a husband, and father, and how Milly, and eventually, her Parkinson's disease, made him grow into a far greater man than he was before. The fact that this is a true account makes this book very significant, and more moving than any fiction could be. It's impossible not to read it without tears. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Comfort of "The Comfort of Home"
"Comfort" is a perfect word for the title of Maria M. Meyer, Paula Derr, and Susan C. Imke's book "The Comfort of Home." The authors are accomplished registered nurses as well as caregiver educators and advocates. Ms. Imke contributes a wealth of specialized knowledge of, and experience with, Parkinson disease. "The Comfort of Home for Parkinson Disease" brings comfort and peace of mind to families of people with Parkinson disease. The authors have successfully compiled a complete collection of the latest Parkinson disease-specific information, resources, caregiving options, record-keeping templates, home safety tips and illustrations, and much more. The material is presented with clarity and compassion. Two imporant and fundamental premises permeate the book: 1) that Parkinson disease affects not only the patient, but the caregiver, and the entire family system; and 2) that PD demands a holistic, team approach to care. This book not only validates, but also elevates, the role of the family caregiver as someone who is intimately involved in, and knowledgable about, the disease, and who is an integral member of the care team. The book goes the extra mile (actually, miles) to help any family caregiver navigate the systems of health care, home care, and Parkinson disease. I heartily give this book 5 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars "The best resource for caregivers I have seen."

"One of the many definitions of comfort is "the capacity to ease well-being", which certainly applies to our homes when we are seeking well-being. The word, care, may have many meanings in different scenarios, but one I like best is "to treat with dignity".The Comfort of Home is truly the best resource for caregivers I have seen. The basic descriptions, pictures, quick bullets of information and tips are just what caregivers need to learn, provided in an easy to "read and see" version. The myriad of helpful topics condensed here is just what caregivers I work with have requested and will benefit from. I highly recommend this resource to all caregivers of those with Parkinson's disease."

My initial symptoms included numbness in myhands and legs, a moderate limp, general form ofbody rigidity, and highly illegible handwriting. My original thought was I wanted to rid myself ofthese conditions to improve my golf game. As ageneral optimist, I never envisioned that Isuffered from a permanently degenerative situation. Itwas quite a shock for me, after a physical examand an MRI of my brain, to hear my neurologist, Dr.Melvin Vigman, officially label me as aParkinsonian. Anyone with Parkinslon's disease as well as their caretaker should appreciate this book.It is well-written and empathethic. Dr. Abe Liebberman hasanswered questions I have had about the baffling condition and it is unfortunate that we do not have more doctors with his knowledge and expertise in America today.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your $ if you expect title to be true!
as a recently diagnosed parkinson disease person, i have read and re-read everything i could get from pd foundations on symptons, treatments and what to expect with pd. the title of this book, "shaking up parkinson disease - fighting like a tiger, thinking like a fox" led me to believe that the famous dr.lieberman would be revealing actions and stragegies not previously printed on dealing with and CURING pd. the title is misleading...contents are almost word for word from his "100 questions & answers about parkinson disease," which i found well organized and quite useful. why were relatives of pd patients interviewed when there are approximately 1 1/2 million
people WITH pd? [whose views are highly valued by me]. i was offened as the good doctor and a-l-l of his famous family interviewes promoted the bible as part of the cure and spouted
endless quotes from it. while spiritual growth may play a part in dealing with this disease, it is incorrect to promote one faith's book of books as part of the actual cure! purchasers would be better served had the dr. shared proactive ways to participate in finding the cure and left his religous beliefs for a book on faith! ...
