Book Description

Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder characterized by tremor, stiffness, and slow gait. It affects 500,000 people in the United States, with approximately 50,000 new cases diagnosed annually. But its impact is much wider. Family members with little understanding of the disease often find themselves struggling to help their loved one navigate the complexities of the health care system. Patients wonder, Which treatments are best for me? Will I be able to live on my own? Should I join a drug trial? In this straightforward, compassionate guide, Nutan Sharma and Elaine Richman address these concerns and more. They provide a thorough review of the etiology, diagnosis, and current treatment of Parkinson's, with special consideration given to the effect on family dynamics and routines--including the often neglected topics of long-term care and sexual function. The authors also review the pros and cons of various alternative therapies, including nutritional supplements, massage therapy, and traditional Chinese medicine.

Too often, with Parkinson's disease, a loved one serves as medical interpreter, patient advocate, and caregiver. In Parkinson's Disease and the Family, Nutan Sharma and Elaine Richman draw on the latest research and clinical practice techniques to offer valuable suggestions for managing patient care and, perhaps more important, for healing the family unit.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was a good book
A comprehensive collection of current and on-going research, treatments and case studies, this amazingly small book provides a great summary of everything you will read about Parkinson's in random web searches. The best part is that it is completely comprehensible for the lay person.I especially recommend this book for family members such as parents and siblings who may not be involved in day to day care-partnering with the Parkinson's Patient, but who may want to have an understanding of what is happening (and what is going to happen) to their family member.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addressing the daily living challenges of Parkinson's
Parkinson's is a movement disorder which affects 500,000 people in the US and adds thousands of new cases annually, but despite its prevalence, families often have little resources to guide them in considering treatment options, drug trail potentials, family dynamics, and disruptions and adjustments to daily living. Parkinson's Disease And The Family: A New Guide addresses all manner of family concerns and is a top pick for this reason, going where competitors do not in addressing the daily living challenges of Parkinson's. Especially appropriate for the non-specialist general reader, Parkinson's Disease And The Family is ideal for community libraries.

Book Description
A neurologist whose father suffers from Parkinson's provides a layreader-friendly explanation of the disease, its history, development, treatment and modern advances that may ultimately lead to a cure. Rosenbaum's professional view is as a clinical neurologist who regularly cares for patients with the progressive neurological deterioration caused by Parkinson's Disease. His personal experience with his father, a retired surgeon, further powers his quest to give patients, family members and caregivers what they need to know. Topics covered include challenges of correct diagnosis, variations in prognosis, investigations of causes including exciting progress in possible toxins and genetic factors that play a role, and different treatment options including natural remedies as well as new drugs for symptom treatment. Rosenbaum also explains research efforts to find a preventative drug, modern surgical options, and hopes for stem cell or gene therapy. In this work, Rosenbaum blends historical and medical research with illustrations from the patients in his professional life, and from his dad on the homefront, to give us a clear and comprehensive understanding of Parkinson's. He also includes writing from and attention to well-known individuals affected by this disorder--among them actor Michael J. Fox. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It fills an empty niche
The title could not be more perfect.Dr. Rosenbaum is both neurologist and concerned son. This book fills an empty niche. For the average person, without a scientific background, the science of this neurological disease, basic epidemiology, and statistics are explained clearly.I have been a nurse, but I now need this information as a person with Parkinson's.I have purchased and read four books on Parkinson's Disease; each reflected my concerns at the time.Beyond the facts and figures he expresses the emotions and the widening circle of impact that a diagnosis of Parkinson's sets off.We should all have such a caring and empathetic person in our lives. This carried to his imparting of information - not just cold facts, as in: here are the four cardinal symptoms, but showing his realization and caring about what these and other symptoms actually do to a person's once-"normal" life.

Dr. Rosenbaum provides us an educational reminder about questioning what we are told, read and see; to not accept everything without investigating the difference between what is known and what is believed and how this was arrived at.He explains the difficulties that factor in the making of a correct diagnosis.I believe he lived up to fulfilling the title of his book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Basic Science from the Heart
When was the last time you read a book about basic science that you couldn't put down?I have a close friend who was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in his early 60's.I learned alot about the disease through him. I even attended seminars at Stanford University and read articles in renowned medical journals about Parkinson's disease.I had no background in basic science so I didn't know what I didn't know . . . until I read Dr. Rosenbaum's book, Understanding Parkinson's Disease. He is the consummate teacher in his ability to help me, a non-scientist, understand the basic science and history of discovery relating to Parkinson's disease. The title is apt.But what really drew me in were his poignant vignettes told as a son describing his father's struggle with this disease. No question that Dr. Rosenbaum is a dedicated neurologist but that he is also a caring and concerned son bridges his readers in a unique way. The last chapter of the book entitled "The Story of Parkinson's Disease Is Not Finished" suggests hopeful development of treatment of the disease in the future. In the meanwhile, the story of this disease could not be better told. ... Book Description
Peas, “Pills,” and Parkinson’s is the story of Alice Crooker’s battle with Parkinson’s disease and her unusual life with highly irregular people and situations. From her birth when her mother suffered from postpartum psychosis, to the shocking diagnosis of PD at age forty-nine, she uses humor and insight to describe her life and, ultimately, her battle with this misunderstood and relatively neglected disease. Her struggles include a series of mis-diagnoses and a long trail of abandoned doctors prior to finding the competent team of physicians at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle. There, she was given hope and a medical procedure which gave her life back. This is a story of struggle and triumph, despair and hope, and an abiding faith in God. All proceeds from the sale of this book will be donated to the Virginia Mason Hospital Foundation for improving the lives of Parkinson’s patients. Your interest and support are greatly appreciated. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "Peas, Pills and Parkinson's"
Alice Crooker writes of coping with a life-changing disease from a personal and positive perspective that is both enjoyable and enlightening. The result is a book that offers insights to life as well as to her battle with adversity.

5-0 out of 5 stars An inspirational read!
Alice Crooker doesn't like eating peas, taking pills and having Parkinson's disease, but she does like being a parent, climbing peaks and talking to people. When you read this book, you will feel as though Alice is talking to you. As you read, you will be inspired, entertained and amused but, most of all, thankful. Not everyone suffers from Parkinson's and, for that, we should all be thankful.

Peas, Pills and Parkinson's is a snapshot of Alice's life from childhood to adulthood -- a life that, in many ways, prepared Alice for the catastrophic effect that a debilitating, neurological disease can have.

Throughout the book, Alice never loses her sense of fun and ability to see the positive side of life. As she writes, her wacky sense of humor fills the pages and, when she says, "We laughed ourselves silly over absolutely nothing," you can believe it.

I was thoroughly entertained from start to finish: through the laughter and the tears but, mostly, by Alice's abiding love. Thank you Alice.

4-0 out of 5 stars Peas, "Pills," and Parkinson's
Peas, Pills And Parkinson's, by Alice Crooker.
Review by Ron Kruger, newspaper columnist for over 30 years and author of A Higher Good.
It could have been titled "Wit And True Grit," because that's what Alice Crooker brings to her life and to this book. It is a story about trials and triumphs, and courage and humor, in the face of a debilitating malady.
The charm of this book is Crooker's way of putting things:
About her childhood: "Whereas my dad was a "rare genius," because he always remembered and never for an instant forgot I was a special gift from heaven, my mother never forgot the catastrophic depression my birth had triggered."
About being forced to eat peas: "I'm quite certain one day peas will be linked to every known disease and be behind most natural disasters."
This book is full of such wit and humor. Even under the most adverse conditions of Parkinson's, with her body twisted and her movements uncontrollable, the true grit of Crooker's wit shines.
While undergoing "deep brain stimulation," a radical surgery where the head is shaved, a metal halo is screwed into the skull, and pieces of the skull are removed to allow electrical probes deep into brain, the patient remains awake. This is "brain surgery" in every frightening sense of the word. Still, Crooker was quick with self-effacing wit:
"Dr. Nora then started drilling a second dime-size hole, this time on the left side of the top of my skull. His only comment was, "My, you have a thick skull."
My response was, "Thank you for that observation. Now, at last, I'll be able to explain to my family and friends why I am so stubborn and they can't get anything into my head."
Reading Alice Crooker's book makes one wish they knew her personally. It makes one wish they could talk and laugh with her. It makes one wish they could hug her.
After reading it, the first thought that came to my mind was to give my copy to a friend suffering from the early stages of Parkinson's, and then buy another, because the first words of the Introduction to Peas, Pills and Parkinson's says:
"You or someone you know has (this) problem. I am sorry! Since I cannot fix your unfortunate situation, I wrote this book to cheer you up.
"All proceeds will be donated to The Virginia Manson Foundation to help improve the lives of Parkinson's disease patients."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book of Humor, Healing and Fairth
I began Peas, "Pills" and Parkinson's, by Alice Crooker in an airport, and finished it on the airplane before I arrived at my destination. The problem was that I had to control my laughter and my tears on the plane, and that is difficult while reading this book. Alice is an excellent writer. Her writing is well-organized and flowing. The stories are not only about Alice having Parkinson's, but also the other challenges and wonders of her life. She climbed mountains, loved her family of childhood and the challenges they brought her, and fell in love with her "faithful, level headed husband, Dave." She says at his retirement party she was thrilled to see how so many others admired him!

Although as a child her family had difficulty even getting water, she looked on her childhood as a good one. Her mother and father were very interesting people, to say the least, and her descriptions of them were so good I felt I had met them. The struggles have been there in Alice's life, but she has met them assertively with humor and never given up on others or her own health problems. In her final chapter, "Odds and Ends," facing some additional medical problems she writes that she and her husband took a trip and "proceeded to laugh themselves silly over absolutely nothing."

Although Alice's life had difficulties, she never lost her sense of humor or her gratitude to God and her family. She says, "Parkinson's is not good, but God truly is." She says, "all he needs to hear from you and from me are the words, "Dear Lord, please take me in your arms and help me." This is an outstanding book of real life experiences met with determination and hope. I loved this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, Uplifting, Marvelous
Frustrated with the doctors, you need to read Alice's book. Her determination along with her faith in God will help you deal with everyday life. This book will warm your heart and put several smiles on your face. Thank you, Alice. ... Read more

    Book Description
At the age of 37, Bill Harshaw was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. The news changed his life forever, bringing forth a saga that will give hope to not only Parkinsonians, but to people with chronic disease everywhere. My Second Life is not a detailed road map or a set of instructions. Instead, it is an account of his changing state of mind over the two decades that he has had Parkinson's Disease.Beginning with his diagnosis at the age of 37, this twenty-year journey covers diagnosis, denial, coping with work, early retirement, experimental neurosurgery, and taking a major leadership role in The Parkinson Foundation of Canada. Bill's account of the two neurosurgical procedures is the first by a patient of the operations that gave him a second chance at life."They say adversity draws out our deepest human qualities. To read Bill Harshaw's story is to confirm that truth. From the scrap heap of neurogeneration at the same age as Michael J. Fox, to guinea pig for risky brain surgery and then to resurgence and rejoicing, Bill's exemplary journey is a metaphor for the vast and positive capabilities of the human spirit."David C. 5-0 out of 5 stars Effective powerful punch against PD. (Gerard J. Washburn author of 'Beastly Son')

She now has an understanding beyond the adults I come in contact with, and being an innocent child, she doesn't doubt the rude effects of PD. Thank you Rasheda for having the Love necessary for this advocacy and fight.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a gift of insight and knowledge
When I was disgnosed with Parkison's disease 11 years ago, the diagnosing neurologist made a comparison that people might mistake Parkinson's for dementia. It has taken me a long time to rid myself of that image.I found that the Parkinson's library at LSUSHCS (Louisiana State University at Shreveport's Health Scienced Center) had purchased I'll Hold Your Hand So You Won't Fall:A Child's Guide to Parkinson's disease by Rasheeda Ali, I couldn't reserve it fast enough. This amazing work by this amazing and courageous daughter was just what I had been searching for to send to my two grandsons, who live outside of Boston (I live in Texas) and whom I see once or twice a year, because of the distance.I wanted them to understand Grampy's struggle and to not be afraid of him if he acts strangely or can't keep up with their boundless seven and nine year-old energy.I've not seen them since I purchased the book and mailed it to them, but I have every confidence that my next visit will be a 'comfortable' and enjoyable one with, hopefully some questions for Grampy about Parkinson's disease upon which they and I can establish common ground.

Thank you, Rasheeda, for this grand gift designed to provide knowledge and put a 'face" to Parkinson's disease.

I believe this book was great idea to help our kids understand their elders, and I hope that the same idea can be used to write similar books about other terminal diseases such as Alzheimer's.

I also think this book should be made available in primary school libraries, to make it more accessible to all children wither any of their relatives have PD or not, because I believe that such information should be known by everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Title should be a "guide for families."
Kudos to Rasheda Ali for writing a beautifully illustrated guide that educates its readers both with fact and compassion.I truly believe that the book's explanation of Parkinson's disease can be a guide, not just for children but for all family members. This text is a "must have" for families coping with seeing a loved one deal with Parkinson's disease. ... Read more

    Book Description
Highly experienced clinician-researchers distill the immense amount of new information now available about movement disorders to create a practice-oriented tutorial for all physicians treating movement disorders. Their book helps physicians to distinguish each disorder, providing a basic understanding of both the test and treatment options needed in active practices, as well as the effective use of the therapeutic recommendations of consulting specialists. The first half of the book is devoted to Parkinson's disease and conditions masquerading as parkinsonism, while the remainder details the recognition and treatment of tremor, dystonia, chorea, myoclonus, tics, gait disorders, the ataxias, conditions resulting in spasms, and restless legs syndrome. In all cases, Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders: Diagnosis and Treatment Guidelines for the Practicing Physician provides sufficient background so that even relatively inexperienced clinicians can readily master the diagnosis and treatment of these neurologic conditions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What a Stunning Book!
I sat down and read it through completely, and was amazed at the knowledge, and well researched detail that you have presented.Notable, are the medical and technical knowledge together with the care and real concern for Parkinson's sufferers, which is shown by compassionate practitioners in many fields.

This has to be the definitive book on this subject, giving hope, support and the tools with which to live as creatively and with as much dignity as possible.I do not just wish you well with it's publication, but am lost in admiration!"

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential User-Friendly Resource Book
This resource book is an essential user-friendly compendium and tool-kit. By following the various practical strategies described patients with PD can be helped and encouraged to improve their quality of life, function as best as they are able, reduce symptoms and minimise the distressing side-effects of drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book with a Marked Advantage
This may not be as headline-grabbing or sensationalist as foetal grafts or human cloning, but has the advantage of markedly improving the lives of those with this unfrotunate illness.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MOST HELPFUL BROADLY-BASED BOOK OF ITS KIND
I have read the whole book, which I found a super help for both Doctors and Healthcare Professionals as well as for Patients and Carers. Honestly I haven't read such a detailed andmultidisciplinary book so far. Eminent medical and allied healthcare professionals have contributed to the information in the book and all statements are backed up by scientific references.

This is just a brief overview of how I see the whole book which is modern, comprehensive, practical and I think it really is "The way forward!"

There are all the possible medical chapters involved including diagnosis, the difference between young and older onset, treatment (very comprehensive and good).

I find it wonderful that all the chapters are also translated into non-medical language in addition to medical text, with practical aspects given for and by Patients, Carers, Nurse Specialists, etc.

All possible Tests are explained including PET and SPECT and other (Biochemical) laboratory tests.

Surgery is written in the best multidisciplinary and complex way I have ever read. Super!

Even Anaesthesiology and Podiatric Surgery are involved.

I very much enjoyed how much stress and volume is given to Nutrition, which even included recipes and dietary recommendations for healthy food, gaining or losing weight, overcoming problems with chewing, swallowing, etc. I didn't know about Glutathione, which is mentioned, with the references too.

A lot of space is given to sexual life in PD. This is great and provides a lot of information, which is very useful and new for me too.

Also Traditional Chinese Medicine aspects are mentioned including Acupuncture. I found this interesting since it is not my field and I appreciate it.

Depression and other psychiatric problems are explained and ways for management provided, not only medically but also from the psychologist's point of view.

All the health care professionals including PD Nurse Specialist, Physiotherapist, Speech and Occupational Therapist, etc. have their brief articles. Their role is explained and the need for them pointed out. Aspects such as communication are nicely written.

Other problems such as Osteopathy and problems that occur especially in Older People are mentioned, which is very useful.

A lot of Exercise is described with pictures, which is very practical.

Even Patients' and Carers' Points of View are not omitted!

To repeat what I said before - this is just a brief overview of how I see the whole book which is modern, comprehensive, practical and I think it really is "The way forward!" ... Read more

My Fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Miesel, made each of us in her class read a book every week and then to write a review describing the book.I have always loved to read, but how I hated writing that weekly book report. The subject of this book however is, Parkinson's Disease: a subject near and dear to my heart, as I have been suffering from this illness for 12 years. After reading this book, I felt compelled to submit a review to convince other Parkinson's sufferers and professionals treating patients with this illnessthat this book should be a part of all collections of reference books regarding the treatment of Parkinson's Disease.

The 50 page introduction describes how Parkinson's effects individual's suffering from the illness and why exercise is so important for the overall treatment plan for people suffering from Parkinson's Disease. The author, Ann Rosenstein, explains how to begin a water exercise program, covering all aspects. She begins by listing what safety features to look for when choosing a pool to use for an exercise program. She recommends an exercise companion to aid the Parkinson's individual with carrying out his (her) water treatment program and devotes a chapter to describinghow the companion can be most effective.Water exercise equipment is recommended to add resistance to the exercise program. The equipment is described as well as photographed.

The heart of the book are the photographs and detailed descriptions of the water exercises.Ann Rosenstein carefully describes the exercises step by step with pictures of her going through the exercises with individuals with Parkinson's Disease. She begins with warm-ups and stretching and then proceeds to demonstrate water exercises for the purpose aerobic and strength training. There are four different routines laid out to accommodate the different needs of Parkinson's patients. The book concludes with a chapter devoted to frequently asked questions about water exercise programs.

I certainly hope you consider adding this book to your library of books regarding treatment of Parkinson' Disease. It is well worth the investment. ... Read more
