5-0 out of 5 stars Stop Parkin'
It really is amazing that somebody who had the Parkinson disease could recover, by changing numerous things of his daily life. I'm convinced myself that the environment is one cause for the Parkinson Syndrom development in a body. Most likely the detailed described food additives have negative effects, and also the environmental conditions, where we have to live under. This book is very recommendable, not only for Parkinson - patients, but for everybody. Change Your live today, is the "Motto". Who doesn't want to live in a nondangerous environment. ... Read more

Product Description
Parkinson's disease becomes apparent only after substantial loss (>60%) of the dopamine neurons in the substantia nigra. By this time there has already been widespread neural inclusion formation in the peripheral and central nervous system of patients with the disease, although this has only been recognized more recently. Degeneration in these widespread regions of the peripheral and central nervous system is now known to impact on disease symptoms, progression and treatment over time. This book aims to provide a comprehensive review of these non-dopamine lesions in Parkinson's disease by assessing our current knowledge of their presence and pathophysiology, how they relate to different symptoms and, where relevant, discuss how they may be potentially treated. The book addresses most of the known symptoms that occur in patients with Parkinson's disease. In addition to the classic motor triad, motor speech, eye movements, olfactory dysfunction, autonomic dysfunction, pain and sensory abnormalities, sleep disturbances, depression and apathy, dopamine dysregulation syndromes, hallucinations and psychoses, cognitive impairment and dementia, and systemic manifestations are all reviewed. Early selective cell loss in non-dopaminergic regions is highlighted (the glutamate projection neurons of the presupplementary motor cortex and caudal intralaminar thalamus) in addition to the widespread inclusion formation in many regions outside the basal ganglia that characterize the disease. Overall this book provides a comprehensive analysis of the lesions associated with the most common symptoms found in patients with Parkinson's disease. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Shaking up parkinson disease
I purchased this book for my mother who is suffering from parkinson disease. She can easily read this book and understand the terminology...not over her head. She is much more content in understanding what is happening to her body and what she can do to help herself now.

5-0 out of 5 stars A VeryHeloful, InformativeBook
Anyone with Parkinslon's disease as well as their caretaker should appreciate this book.It is well-written and empathethic. Dr. Abe Liebberman hasanswered questions I have had about the baffling condition and it is unfortunate that we do not have more doctors with his knowledge and expertise in America today.

1-0 out of 5 stars don't waste your $ if you expect title to be true!
as a recently diagnosed parkinson disease person, i have read and re-read everything i could get from pd foundations on symptons, treatments and what to expect with pd. the title of this book, "shaking up parkinson disease - fighting like a tiger, thinking like a fox" led me to believe that the famous dr.lieberman would be revealing actions and stragegies not previously printed on dealing with and CURING pd. the title is misleading...contents are almost word for word from his "100 questions & answers about parkinson disease," which i found well organized and quite useful. why were relatives of pd patients interviewed when there are approximately 1 1/2 million
people WITH pd? [whose views are highly valued by me]. i was offened as the good doctor and a-l-l of his famous family interviewes promoted the bible as part of the cure and spouted
endless quotes from it. while spiritual growth may play a part in dealing with this disease, it is incorrect to promote one faith's book of books as part of the actual cure! purchasers would be better served had the dr. shared proactive ways to participate in finding the cure and left his religous beliefs for a book on faith! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Valuable book
A noted surgeon who left his native Philippines to escape the connubial dictatorship of the Marcoses and continued his practice in Canada and, later, the U.S., my Dad read Joel Havemann's account of his valiant and ongoing battle with Parkinson's Disease, and had nothing but praise for this highly interesting and informative work.

He wrote, "I found A Life Shaken a great and wonderful book that proved most valuable to me because your Uncle Nene has been fighting his own battle with PD for the last 10 years and is now in a fully assisted nursing home. Joel Havemann's description of his disease is very vivid -- much better than any of my old medical textbooks".

Retired for 20 years now, my Dad, Dr. Gumersindo Garcia, Jr.maintains his status as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and attends medical conferences regularly, while also keeping up with medical developments through the medical journals he gets at home.

He concludes, "I know that Parkinson's and Alzheimer's afflict millions of Americans, which is why I hope and pray that cures will be discovered for these horrible diseases soon".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Life Shaken, A Fork Taken
Whether or not you are a Parkinson's Disease patient, you will be gripped by the candor, courage and clarity in Joel Havemann's A Life Shaken: My Personal Encounter with Parkinson's Disease. This book is so authoritative that author Havemann -- a Harvard-educated mathematician and working journalist - could well add the initials "M..D." after his name and get away with it.

Diagnosed with this horrendously frightening disease at age 46, Havemann came to a fork on the road that was his life. What to do? Take the fork that will lead you to a cocoon where you will wither away as Parkinson's ravages your mind, your body and your soul -- your own private world? Or, do you (as the author recites his core beliefs - his religion, he says -- in the final paragraph of his book) fling the gauntlet and shout, "Parkinson's, do your worst. You can't rob me of that."

Havemann has thrown the gauntlet; Parkinson's has not responded. Here's a book you can't put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know but don't want to know
This was by far the most comprehensive, detailed and informative book on Parkinson's disease I have read.
The author is an Early On Set Parkinson's patient and yet, with support, has been able to continue to raise his family and work full-time at his job as Editor of the Los Angeles Times.

He thoroughly investigates medications and other medical proceedures available and their benefits and disadvantages, which I found extremely helpful- certainly more information than I received from any physician.

Further, the author discusses, with amazing frankness, his own physical and mental challenges, which takes it beyond pure information to a story of courage and personal growth.

5-0 out of 5 stars Parkinson's by deadline
Joel Havemann brings the journalist's practiced eye for detail, detachment and clarity of expression to the task of understanding, describing and coping with Parkinson's. He also allows his heart to speak and the result is a work that should be especially valuable to those who have themselves have recently received a Parkinson's diagnosis or who have a close relative or friend thus stationed.
The book offers clear and interestingly presented facts about the various drugs, treatments and hopeful research that become an integral part of having Parkinson's, as well as the historical and public policy context in which those elements have evolved in the centuries since the disease was first identified. There is just the right mix of facts, opinion and sometimes barely concealed disgust in Havemann's treatment of these matters.
As valuable as those chapters are, I think many will find Havemann's account of his personal odyssey and that of his family to be the more valuable aspect of his book. He is unstinting in his descriptions of the physical and mental effects of the disease and frank about his occasional failures to deal with those effects as effectively as he would like. He also spares little in telling of his fears about the disease's potential progress and what it could mean for him and his family.
I can't think of a better preparation for confronting the many challenges and crises that accompany the arrival of Parkinson's in the life of an individual and family. A Life Shaken is strongly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars An intelligent look at PD
Other books about PD scared the heck out of me, but Havemann's sense of humor and indomitable spirit have changed my perspective. I'm not afraid anymore. Thank you Joel. The book is honest and straightforward. He describes what happens to a brain with PD so clearly that I finally understand it! ... Read more

Product Description
Morton Kondracke never intended to wed Millicent Martinez, but the fiery daughter of a radical labor organizer eventually captured his heart. They married, raised two daughters, and loved and fought passionately for twenty years. Then, in 1987, Milly noticed a glitch in her handwriting, a small tremor that would lead to the shattering diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. Saving Milly is Kondracke’s powerfully moving chronicle of his vital and volatile marriage, one that has endured and deepened in the face of tragedy; it also follows his own transformation from careerist to caregiver and activist, a man who will “fight all the way, without pause or rest, to ‘save’ his beloved Milly.” *

(* Linda Bowles, The Washington Times)Amazon.com Review
Morton Kondracke chronicles his wife's 13-year battle against Parkinson's disease with the same attention to nitty-gritty details and shrewd understanding of how power works that distinguish his political commentary. Kondracke doesn't airbrush how horrible it is to have Parkinson's (the squeamish should avoid the passages about Milly Kondracke's two rounds of deep-brain surgery), or how difficult it is to live with someone who does (the mere recitation of his caretaking activities will exhaust most readers). He provides unvarnished accounts of the battles among members of the Parkinson's Action Network and other disease activists competing for limited federal research funds, until they got real and decided to fight to double the National Institutes of Health's budget so everyone would get more money. And he refuses to offer a feel-good ending charged with false hope; the book's closing pages include a grim account of the Kondrackes' discussions about what to do if she becomes unable to swallow. (They settled on refusing the feeding tube and allowing her to starve to death, which "is not painful if the patient doesn't take liquids.") Offsetting this bleak material is a vibrant, loving, and equally candid portrait of the indomitable Millicent Martinez Kondracke, who began up-ending the admittedly self-absorbed, drivingly ambitious Kondracke's life from the moment they met in 1966. He'd planned to marry an Ivy-educated heiress who could further his career; instead he was swept away by a Mexican Jewish American firebrand who challenged authority on everything from a botched car repair to the school system's poor handling of their daughter's dyslexia. Seeing how powerful she once was, we share her anguish as she descends into disability--and her husband's hope that, despite all the current scientific projections, research will provide a breakthrough in time to save Milly. --Wendy Smith ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dealing with Parkinson

My name is Alton Bloomfield, I was diagnosed with parkinson in Nov. of 2003.
My early symtoms differed some from Milly's in the book. This was probably
due to the difference in our ages when we were diagnosed. I have been able to
control it with medication to the point where I can still drive and do most anything I want to do. The book Saving Milly was in excellant condition when
I received it. I highly recommend Amazon Books.

4-0 out of 5 stars Saving Milly
Book was used one, but well preserved. Price was just right.
Saving Milly was a heart breaking real life story. Had to draw paralels
with my story spouse has Parkinson's for last 10 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saving Milly, a Parkinson's Story
Excellent book, well written. Anyone who has, or is spouse or friend of
someone with Parkinson's should read this book. It will make you cry and then make you mad, really mad. The U.S. Government should read it and see
how poorly funds are distributed for aid and research. It's a shame.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding interview + reader's guide in paperback edition
Paperback includes both a reading guide and a compelling interview with Kondracke by his comrade, Fred Barnes. In particular, it is interesting to learn about what Kondracke wishes he had done a bit differently in telling the story. In a sense, Kondracke stands outside the story to evaluate how faithfully he told it, an extraordinary exercise.

Maybe this book is less about Milly and more about "saving Milly" and what that meant: pragmatically, socially, politically, spiritually. It's a useful distinction to bear in mind. There is some background information about this brave and lovely woman, but inasmuch as the topic is an encounter with a disease she has, this is not a biography of Milly. It is a picture of sickness and its impact: not of the woman, herself.

There are plenty of books about people with illness: fewer, by far, about the very flawed, though devoted, individuals who care for them. Kondracke seems no longer to flinch at the shadows of his inadequacy and pomposity, which might encourage the reader to consider a similarly brave examination of conscience. Many of us will be called to be caregivers. Thisis no map, but it is a clear narrative of costs, rewards, pain, and delight that bubble up in the dynamic between cared-for and caregiver.

I liked the book a lot and absolutely recommend the paperback edition because of its additions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saving A Friend
I had known Milly Kondracke for a quarter of a century before her death last year of Parkinson's disease. She was my mentor. Morton's memoir of their marriage is touching, well-written and a quick read.

My only regret is that Morton glossed over Milly's wonderful gift as a social worker/therapist in a paragraph, for that was her career identity. Milly did her own mourning when she had to cease her private practice due to her illness. Still the book gives you a taste of her personality, one of those persons who were larger than life.

"Saving Milly" achingly illustrates the struggle of a family who must care for a loved one through a long term illness and raises the question of politics, funding and ethics for those with incurable illnesses. I highly recommend this book. ... Read more

Movement disorders are a group of neurological conditions that are characterised by problems with movement - either unwanted movements, such as tremors, jerks or twitches, or slowness and poverty of movement.Parkinson's disease is the most common of these conditions, and it affects approximately 1% of the population. Its treatment is complex, but effective, and there have been many recent exciting developments in the field.Other movement disorders are less common and extremely diverse, so it is difficult for practitioners to become proficient in diagnosing and treating them all. This book will help neurologists and other clinicians in the recognition and treatment of this important group of disorders.Written in a concise, easy-to-use handbook format, it should appeal to a multidisciplinary audience. The text is accompanied by a DVD with video clips illustrating the different movement disorders. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars All you need to know in your pocket
I'm a Neurologist currently training in the field of movement disorders. I think this is an excellent book for anybody dealing with this group of patients. The book is very well organized and explanations are concise, clear and didactic. Its main strength is how it helps you with the differential diagnosis by using a symptom guided approach. It provides many very useful tables which allow you to keep in mind common and uncommon conditions when facing an unusual patient. It also includes practical information regarding diagnostic tests and treatment (different options, dosages, common side effects). I was amazed at the vast amount of information contained in such a small book. The DVD with patient videos, although a little bit short, is a great extra. The test is also very coherent, probably reflecting that it is the work of very few authors. In summary I would say it covers everything you need to know to work in a Movement Disorders clinic and a little bit more... And you can carry it in your pocket! ... Read more

I've bought this book 11 times now to give to people who need some light. And I hear time and again that that's happened - and that they get it for others.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very helpful and hopeful book
The First Year---Parkinson's Disease: An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed is a very helpful book.It has done a good job in telling me what to expect. It was hopeful in that it suggested that I still have many years left before Parkinsons closes in on me.The style is light and easy to read.At the same time it is helpful in that it leads you through all of the stages. At the same time it suggest things you should do -- like letting your family know what is going on.

1-0 out of 5 stars outdated
This book was probably an excellent resource when it was published, but with the advances in Parkinson's treatment, the book is outdated. On my doctor's advice, I have torn it apart, so that others will not be scared by the contents.

It is a MUST read for anyone who has been recently diagnosed. ... Read more
