5-0 out of 5 stars The best pathology book for students!
This is THE textbook of pathology for students of medicine and dentistry!
Pros? Well, it has all the 4 C's...
1) Clear language... minimal verbosity, straight to the point
2) Comprehensive ... it has all the facts the student needs to know for exams as well as future clinical practice
3) Colour pictures ... not the black and white stuff but full colours to add more morphological meaning to the texts
4) Cast ... I'm sure everyone wants to read a book written by authoritative pathologists?

Cons?
1) Cumbersome ... students just initiated into the world of pathology may find it tough to plough through the thousand over pages of text (like I did while in med school), but believe me, if you stick by it, you'll enjoy the fruits of your labour in due time.
2) Some of the facts and tumour classifications may be a little out of date (latest edition published in 1999) but if you're a student, don't brood over it. Tutors would probably highlight major updates during your pathology course.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great book for those going into pathology!
If you are an ordinary medical student like myself this book is too detailed and has everything there is to know about the subject. It is a great book for those who have a basic understanding of pathology, but for those who don't good luck reading it for the first time. Some of the comments(jokes) in the book are also not needed. I believe that "Basic Pathology" 6th. edition from the same authors is a lot easier to understand with better and more colorful diagrams.

1-0 out of 5 stars thick but not good
The book is written in a very dense matter and extremely unfriendly to reading but worst of all it has very few histological images so while the description is there you often times do not see it and so you don't learn it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Life saver
The small Robbins pulled me through my pathology. There is no time to read the big Robbins. I used it to prepare Step1 and i am glad that i use it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baby Robbins
There is no way around it. You must read this book, and review it thoroughly. If you haven't time to read the Papa or Mama Robbins and review with the baby, then just read the baby. You may utilise the Papa or Mama for its pictures otherwise. This is the only way you'll ever come to understanding pathology; I've finally come to realise it. Much easier to grasp the pathophysiology than in the BRS.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Step 1
This is one my pearl for all second year students preparing for the boards: This book is the gold standard for being properly prepared for the Boards. I memorized this book, Ganong's Physiology, Katzung's pharm review, Jawetz's Micro review. I also memorized Lippincot's Biochem, NMS Neuroscience, NMS Genetics. I broke 255 and am now a first year resident at my first choice for neurosurgery (and I only wanted the most prestigous programs).

If you have high aspirations, then you must memorize Robbins' pocket companion also. It is so much more thorough than the BRS and retains some element of succinctness. There are no path questions on the boards that you won't be able to get if you memorize this book from cover to cover.

That is the key. Memorize this book and the others mentioned above and you too can pick where you want to do your residency. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent text
less comprehensive than Shafer's but it is more direct to the target and more actually clinically oriented. thanks to the authors

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for the undergraduate dental student.
I would like to see a more complete version of this book written for the professionals. It provides a good review of the topic although at times lacking in depth. Highly recommended for the dental student.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent oral pathology text, a must for any dental prof.
The text is an exellent analysis and summation of many common and uncommon disorders. The text builds and updates the previous publicaions which in my opinion are some of the most useful works in oral pathology. Clear, concise, understandible and well organized. This text should be in every Dental and Medical professionals library. Dr. Steven Sudbrink, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for self-assessment
I used this MCQs book when I studied Pathology. It's enjoying to test yourself after you study a specific organ system.

Features of this book:

1. This book is thoroughly page-referenced to Cotran, Kumar & Robbins: Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease, 5th Ed.

2. Variety of MCQs (over 1400) covering wide range of topics.

3. Each chapter has many picture MCQs which are black and white, showing gross and microscopic specimens.

4. Very good explanations at the end of each chapter with their references.

5. Some of the MCQs options include (All of the above) and (None of the above) which are obsolete type of options.

6. The types of questions used are: Single-best-answer, True/ False type (which almost never come in the USMLE !), matching, and one, two, neither, or both (which are often difficult).

7. Unfortunately many MCQs come in the form of (All the following are true about ... EXCEPT) which is not what you face if you want to solve real USMLE-type questions.

8. Contents include:
General Pathology, Pediatric & Genetic Diseases, Nutritional & Environmental Diseases, Infectious Diseases, Cardiovascular , Respiratory, Hematopoeitic & lymphoid, GI tract, liver Biliary tree & Pancreas, Kidney & urinary tract, Reproductive, Breast, Skin, Endocrine, Musculoskeletal, and Nervous system.

9. This book comes in 239 pages, published by W. B. Saunders; 4th edition (1995).

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for test prep.
This book was invaluable for the AAPA Pathologist's Assistance Fellowship Exam. Not only does it give numerous Robbin's based questions for practice, it also helps focus on imoportant areas, giving extended answers with explanations and page #s for review. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Pathology - Learn from the Best.
Created by the original pathology gurus (Kumar et al.), thisCD-ROM highlights critically important basic pathologic conceptsspanning the breadth of human disease. This impressive collection of 99 cases, and over 1500 images are based upon the authors' own pathology course taught at the University of Texas - Southwestern.

The user friendly interface provides an intuitive organization of material into general and system-based pathology. Each system-based series of cases is prefaced with an easy-to-follow list of objectives which reads very much like a course "syllabus". Cases are referenced to both the fifth and sixth editions of the Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease which is ideal for review. In addition, each case tutorial begins with a USMLE-like clinical vignette.

Images are superbly labeled and the text is high-yield. Seamless and well thought out, it's almost as if the authors were holding a one-on-one clinic with their star pupil - you.

Pound for pound, this CD-ROM provides enormous value. Compared with the thousands of hours and dollars demanded by medical school, Kumar et al. deliver something that most faculty can't: a more robust, intuitive understanding of pathology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers every doc's question but no recent editions
I've used Sodeman's 7th edition repeatedly and find the explanations to be unsurpassed by any other book. The authors truly illustrate the mechanisms by which symptoms and disease are produced. I regret having to move on to other texts because the publishing date is from the dark ages. Sodeman's should be re-released. ... Read more
