Description:
Seventy-eight female and 78 male pathological gamblers admitted to an outpatient treatment program were compared regarding a profile of risk-taking behaviors (suicide attempts, illegal activities meant to finance gambling, sexual risky behavior, and alcohol abuse). The Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry (SCAN), the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale version 11 (BIS-11), and an adaptation of the HIV Risk Behavior Scale were used. Females attempted more suicide than males. Men had more sexual risky behavior and alcohol abuse than women. Younger age and depression were risk factors for suicide attempts, younger age and impulsivity were risk factors for illegal activities. Younger age was a risk factor for sexual risky behavior, and no risk factor other than male gender was found for alcohol abuse. Future investigation of risk behaviors among gamblers must take into account the differences in gender and age. Both impulsivity and emotional distress are related to risk-taking in gamblers, and young gamblers who early in life display other potentially harmful behaviors require special attention. ... From the supplier: The effects of pathological gambling on family and society are varied since the behavior disrupts personal, family or vocational pursuits. Adverse life events such as higher divorce rates, excessive debt, employment termination, alcoholism, drug dependence and bankruptcy have been known to result from pathological gambling. To address this problem, the University of Memphis' Center for Problem Gambling is involved in the research and the treatment of pathological gambling.

Description:
The study of pathological gambling and its treatment is in a nascent stage. To date, no consistent definition of relapse to gambling exists, and only a few empirical studies have evaluated the phenomenon of relapse directly in this patient population. Perspectives on relapse to drug and alcohol use appear relevant to the study of pathological gambling, and relapse to gambling is reviewed within the larger context of addictive disorders. The application of psychological, biological, environmental, and treatment factors are described as they may relate to relapse among pathological gamblers. ... Read more

Description:
The obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder (OCSD) theory postulates that a wide range of disorders is closely related to OCD. Current cognitive models ascertain that certain beliefs leading to misinterpretation of the significance of intrusions are important in the etiology and maintenance of OCD. This study examined whether pathological gambling, a disorder belonging to the OC spectrum, is characterized by similar dysfunctional cognitions as OCD. Dysfunctional beliefs of OCD patients were compared to those of patients with pathological gambling, panic disorder and normal controls. These beliefs were measured by the Obsessive-compulsive Beliefs Questionnaire-87 (OBQ-87), which was developed by a group of leading OCD researchers [Behav. Res. Ther. 35 (1997) 667]. It was hypothesized that according to the OCSD theory, pathological gamblers would exhibit similar cognitions to OCD patients, as well as increased levels of OCD symptoms. Analysis showed that OCD patients exhibited higher OBQ-87 scores than both panic patients and normal controls, but equal to pathological gambling patients. Pathological gamblers exhibited, however, no increase in OCD symptoms. These mixed results do not seem to support the OC spectrum theory for pathological gambling, moreover being contradictory to contemporary cognitive OCD models. ... Read more

Description:
The National Opinion Research Center DSM Screen for Gambling Problems (NODS), a population-based telephone-screening tool to identify gambling problems according to DSM-IV criteria, was examined as a potential outcome measure for gambling treatment studies. The NODS was administered to problem gamblers as part of a 1-year follow-up after a brief treatment. Internal reliability was fair to good and the factor structure and item-total correlations supported the existence of a single construct with three subfactors, measuring negative behavioral consequences, preoccupation and impaired control over gambling and tolerance, and withdrawal and relief gambling. The NODS total score correlated moderately with gambling behavior and outcome as predicted. The total score also correlated highly with the total score of the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS) although the NODS and SOGS categorization of nonproblem, problem, and pathological gamblers showed poor agreement. The NODS, as designed, provided a more strict definition of disordered gambling than the SOGS. In summary, the NODS shows promise as an outcome measure of gambling problems. ... Read more

Book Description
We are a nation of gamblers: pari-mutuel wagering at horse tracks; blackjack in Las Vegas; the NCAA basketball office pool; even day trading on the internet. Gambling is both our national pastime and our predominant cultural metaphor—play the field; beat the odds; take a chance on love. Yet gambling poses serious risks to individuals and to society as a whole.

Neil Isaacs—sports historian, licensed clinical social worker, English professor, and a gambler himself for more than fifty years—seeks to shatter the myths interfering with our understanding of gambling addiction, its causes, and its treatment. He begins by systematically debunking several commonly held beliefs, demonstrating that there is no such thing as the law of averages, that gambling is not inherently sinful, immoral, or criminal, and that money is not always the prime motivator for gamblers.

Isaacs shows how habitual gambling can lead to compulsive gambling, but avoids oversimplifying this condition. Arguing against a undifferentiated interpretation of pathological gambling as a simple impulse control disorder, he draws examples from fiction, film, and his own practice to demonstrate additional ways gambling can be abused.

A radical departure from established views, You Bet Your Life identifies the costs—in dollars, people, families, and credit ratings—of society's failure to address adequately the burdens of gambling. ... Read more
