History that reads like a mystery
Dr. Etheridge makes a very readable story from the search for a cause and cure for a miserable, now forgotten, disease. One can see the horrible skin eruptions that characterize the disease and give the book its title. One feels the frustration and anger of the doctor who was on the right trail as he is rejected, villified, and simply ignored. It isn't common to find danger and drama in a book about medical history. The book is over 30 years old and about events more than 75 years in the past but its fresh and engaging style keeps it relevant. Such struggles as the eradication of a disease should be remembered and reflected upon.
